When was the last time you used a tele鄄
phone box? I mean to make an actual phone
call
—
not to shelter from the rain. Ages ago,
right? The last time I used a phone box for its
intended purpose was...2006. I was conducting
auditions
(试演)
for my play in my tiny old
shared house in London. Hoping to impress
some talented actors to come and work for me
for nothing, I spread some throws over the so鄄
fas and lit candles to make it seem a bit more
“
young professional
”
.
As I rushed outdoors to empty the waste鄄
paper baskets, the door swung shut behind me.
Suddenly I was locked outside. My mobile
phone was inside, but luckily there was a tele鄄
phone box across the street. So, I called Di鄄
rectory Assistance, got put through to our
landlady蒺s managing agent, and had a spare
key sent to me with just enough time to get
back in before the actors arrived.
As it has been many years since I last
used one, I should hardly be surprised that

there are no longer any public telephones near
my house. The last one standing has just been
turned into a
“
mini community library
”
: any
passer鄄by can
“
borrow
”
a book from its shelv鄄
es, and return it later, or replace it with anoth鄄
er title from their own collection.
For a few months after the
“
library
”
ope鄄
ned, I didn蒺t bother taking a look, as I had as鄄
sumed that it would be stuffed full of cheesy
love stories. Then I noticed folk conducting
spring cleans dropping boxes of voluminous
books on various subjects there. And these
books were free. This unbeatable price鄄point
encouraged me to experiment with dozens of
titles that I would never normally consider
buying. And I蒺ve discovered some great books!
If I ever get trapped outside my house
again, my local telephone box will, sadly, no
longer be able to connect me with my keys.
But it can certainly keep me entertained while
I wait for my wife to rescue me.

There will be more plastic than fish in
the world蒺s oceans by 2050. That is what a
new report from the World Economic Forum
and Ellen MacArthur Foundation warns. If the
current trend continues, the report said, oceans
will contain one ton of plastic for every three
tons of fish in 2025. By 2050, plastics will
weigh more than fish. The problem is that
each year at least 8 million tons of plastics
end up in oceans around the world. This is the
same as dumping the contents of one garbage
truck into the ocean every minute.

Not all plastic ends up in the ocean be鄄
cause someone throws a plastic bottle into the
water. Plastic containers and other trash
thrown onto streets and sidewalks often are
swept into oceans. Unlike other types of trash
in the ocean, the plastic never bio鄄degrades.
There is a way to slow the amount of plastics
going into the oceans
—
people can recycle
more. Currently only about 14 percent of plas鄄
tics are recycled. Research in Europe shows as
much as 53 percent of plastic could be recy鄄
cled using available technology. The report
says that another solution is using less plastic
for packaging products. But that is not likely
to happen.
“
Given plastic packaging蒺s many benefits,
both the possibility and desirability of an
across鄄the鄄board dramatic reduction in the
volume of plastic packaging used is clearly
low,
”
the report said. But the authors note re鄄
ducing the use of plastics should be tried
“
where possible.
”
For decades, scientists
warned that plastics are killing fish. Research
shows that fish are dying from choking after
eating plastics. Another cause of death is that
plastics cause
“
intestinal blockage and starva鄄
tion,
”
the environmental group said.
( )
1. Why is the garbage truck mentioned
in Paragraph 1?
A. To explain how plastics end up
in the ocean.

cean pollution.
C. To clarify the seriousness of the
problem.
D. To point out some details of the
report.
( )
2. Why is plastic more dangerous than
other types of trash?
A. There is too much of it.
B. It poisons the ocean water.
C. It is from different sources.
D. It is hard to break down.
( )
3. What is the author蒺s attitude to the
suggested solutions?
A. Pessimistic. B. Curious.
C. Unconcerned. D. Terrified.
( )
4. What can we infer from the text?
A. People are not aware of the pro鄄
blem.
B. Recycling is limited by lack of
technology.
C. Plastic packaging has become
part of our life.

placed by plastics.
