The family had moved to their neighbor鄄 hood just three months earlier. When they moved in, a neighbor stopped by to deliver Glenda a telephone directory of everyone who lives in the neighborhood, complete with pho鄄 tos and contact information. It蒺s a place people don蒺t want to leave. It蒺s also a place where people are serious about being good neighbors. So when Samantha was out with her parents, neighbors like Jill McNeil were really sad that they couldn蒺t greet the girl with words. Then he thought, “ Since she 34 couldn蒺t learn our language, why don蒺t we learn hers? ” McNeil and three other neighbors quietly signed up for local adult education classes in ASL. As with any new language, learning ASL takes time. But McNeil says the classes are working. “ We know how to say, ‘ Are you riding your bike? ’ or ‘ You have pretty new pink sports shoes. ’ There蒺s a dog across the street that she loves to play with. So we all know the sign for ‘ dog ’ . ” The classes have been such a hit that there are now two offerings, on two different weeknights, bringing the number of neighbors learning the language to about 40. “ We蒺re just thankful that we live here and we蒺re surrounded by these wonderful people, ” Raphi Savitz says. Rays of sunshine pierced through the trees, the hard soil crunched beneath his feet and birds con鄄 ducted their own orchestra. But Beethoven wasn蒺t amazed at these details. Some years earlier, he had started to lose his hearing. He still persevered with his work, and went on creating timeless music. But he found little joy in the process. Today, 466 million people worldwide have disabling hearing loss, and over 900 million are expected to have it by 2050, according to the World Health Organization. Its impact is often underestimated compared with other dis鄄 abilities, and people with hearing loss con鄄 stantly experience communication difficulties in their everyday lives. They often mishear the speech and find it very difficult to follow conversations. The miscommunication can lead individuals to feel isolated as they struggle to Unit 4单元测试卷 35 高中英语选择性必修 第二册 (外研版) 精编版 take part in social interactions, and ultimately lead them to withdraw from society. As Helen Keller once wrote: Blindness cuts us off from things, but deafness cuts us off from people. To this day, there is still no cure for sen鄄 sorineural (感觉神经性的) hearing loss ( the most common type, and the one Beethoven had ) . We have advanced technological devices that strengthen the sound, such as hearing aids and cochlear implants (人工耳蜗) , but these still don蒺t restore hearing. Scientists have been studying the regeneration process of hair cells in non鄄mammals, and they have identified va鄄 rious genes and proteins that have central roles. These can be targeted to stimulate sup鄄 port cells in the cochlea to create more hair cells and replace those that died. Some of these cell therapies have been successful in restoring the hearing of mice and guinea pigs: a breakthrough! If it works, such a scientific advance could transform hearing health care. When Beethoven lost his hearing, he se鄄 parated himself from society, but one thing that gave him strength was the hope that his hearing could be regained one day. But each medical remedy he attempted failed. In 1802, he wrote: But thinking that for six years now, I have been hopelessly afflicted, made worse by senseless physicians, from year to year cheated by hopes of improvement, and finally forced to face a lasting disease ( whose cure will take years or perhaps be impossible ) . 28. Science and technology are vital for the world. C. The deaf are always inspired by the fa鄄 mous. D. The deaf are optimistic about their lives. 31. What is the best title for the passage? A. Thanks to Your Dream! B. Everything Is Possible C. Beethoven蒺s Dream D. I Have a Dream D Rochelle DeLacey, an intensive care nurse from Auckland, New Zealand, has gone on two field services with MSF in Gaza to pro鄄 vide training to local nurses. “ The nurses were really enthusiastic, ” said DeLacey. “ They were very grateful to have the opportunity to deve鄄 36 lop their intensive care skills. Their only other option was to search ‘ intensive care ’ online. ” In 2013, DeLacey spent six months in Gaza providing bedside teaching in intensive care to local nurses. “ Because they couldn蒺t leave and a lot of educationalists couldn蒺t come in, ” she said, “ they had never received spe鄄 cialized intensive care nursing training in Gaza. ” MSF asked DeLacey to return to Gaza this year to teach an additional short course for nurses. She and another intensive care nurse traveled to Singapore to learn how to teach the course which aims to spread high鄄 quality teaching materials that can be taught by other people. The two nurses worked to adapt the course to the low鄄resource Gazan context, such as removing portions that rely on high鄄tech monitoring equipment that蒺s unavail鄄 able in Gaza. During her five鄄week placement in Gaza, DeLacey taught the two鄄day course nine times, reaching a total of 116 nurses, which is the majority of nurses in Gaza. A pre鄄course and post鄄course exam showed that the nurses in Gaza made significant gains in skills and knowledge. One of the key challenges is to en鄄 sure that the nurses continue to apply their new skills after the training team leaves. A local MSF doctor and a nurse have been tasked with providing follow鄄up and offering addi鄄 tional training opportunities. “ The ultimate aim is to increase the qua鄄 lity of care that patients receive, reduce morta鄄 lity rates (死亡率 ) and reduce the length of hospital stay, ” De Lacey said. 32. Specialized intensive care nursing train鄄 ing was undervalued. 34. Why did DeLacey travel to Singapore be鄄 fore returning to Gaza? A. To relax her body and mind. B. To give high鄄quality intensive care les鄄 sons. C. To give teaching materials of the course to local nurses. D. To find out how to run the course for Gazan nurses. 35. How did MSF ensure Gazan nurses蒺 con鄄 tinuous application of their new skills? A. By setting regular written tests online. B. By assigning two local persons to give Unit 4单元测试卷 37 高中英语选择性必修 第二册 (外研版) 精编版 follow鄄up guidance. C. By introducing a patient鄄monitoring sys鄄 tem. D. It looked like he was carrying all of his books. I thought to myself: Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday? He must re鄄 ally be a nerd (书呆子) . As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him. They ran at him, knock鄄 ing all his books out of his arms and tripping him up so he landed in the dirt. His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him. He looked up and I saw the terrible sadness in his eyes. So, I jogged to him and as he crawled around look鄄 ing for his glasses, I saw a tear in his eye. As I handed him his glasses, he said, “ Thanks! ” There was a big smile on his face. It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude. We talked all the way home, and I carried his books. He turned out to be a pretty cool kid. The more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him. Over next four years, Kyle and I became best friends. When we were seniors, he had the highest marks in the class and was chosen to give a speech at the graduation ceremony. I teased him all the time about being a nerd. He had to prepare a lot, and I was so glad it wasn蒺t me having to get up there and speak. Graduation day, I saw Kyle. I said, “ Hey, big guy, you蒺ll be great! ” He looked at me with one of those looks, the really grateful one, and said “ Thanks ” with a smile. As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began. Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years. Text 10 Mohandas Gandhi was one of the most influential hu鄄 man rights activists. He dedicated himself to making India an independent country. He was born in 1869 at Porbandar, India. He studied law in London and worked in Mumbai for a few years. He then spent 21 years in South Africa, where he supported and fought for Indian people蒺s rights. When he set foot in Indian soil upon his return from South Africa, he became the leader of the Indian National Congress, the political party which was fighting for India蒺s independence. Eventually, Gandhi蒺s dream came true and India became independent in 1947. It was because of his personality and life choices that Gandhi managed to change the future of India. He was a generous man who was never after money or power and whose only dream in life was to help those in need. He thought of all people as equal and he fought for liberty and independence for everyone. Al鄄 though he was a politician, he never followed ordinary politicians蒺 methods in his fight for equal rights. He be鄄 lieved that all problems could have peaceful solutions. To millions of Indian people he is a national hero. Because of his strong beliefs, he蒺s still an inspiration to us all. 第二部分 阅读 (共两节, 满分 50 分) 第一节 (共 15 小题; 每小题 2.5 分, 满分 37.5 分) 21~25 CADCC 26~30 ADABA 31~35 CCADB 21. Cars and other vehicles let off carbon gases, so do many other hu鄄 man activities, which causes global warming, disasters, and so on. It蒺s high time that we should go green. From my point of view, we should raise the public蒺s awareness of the significance of going green. And taking public transportation or riding bicycles instead of driving should be greatly encouraged. Meanwhile, I found he looked hard at me and gave me a little smile. “ Thankfully, I was saved. My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable. ” I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment. When his eyes caught mine, I was able to see tears shimmering in his smiling eyes. Paragraph 2: I smiled back in tears. Not until that moment did I realize what a big difference one small gesture had made to him. I even saw his mom and dad looking at me and smiling with that same grateful smile. It dawned on me that never should we underestimate the power of our actions. With one small gesture we can change a persons life. For better or for worse.
