Chen Yuanchun is a teacher at a rural (乡村的) primary school in Cangyuan, Yunnan Province. The 44-year-old woman teaches Chinese, but she is very interested in computer technology. She has introduced coding (编程) to her students as an important information technology skill.
Chen’s connection to coding began in November 2018. She became one of the first teachers in Cangyuan to take training courses on coding. The training was challenging for a beginner like Chen. She needed to learn how to tell a machine to perform actions and finish tasks (任务) through different orders. She worked very hard because she believed this skill would be useful for her students.
After the training, Chen started a new group in her school to teach the students coding, but some parents opposed her plan. They didn’t understand what coding was and thought Chen was teaching their children to play video games on the computer.
So, Chen could only teach students of her own class at first. For teens, coding does not include writing difficult coding languages. Instead, Chen taught them how to create interesting animations (动画片) and games.
After only one term, every student was able to create something through coding. Learning coding also helped them become more creative and improved their problem-solving skills.
Soon, coding classes became popular in schools all over Cangyuan. Some students even won prizes in a national competition last year.

It was a dark and stormy night. It was New Year’s Eve. We were having our party and had a house full of people just starting to celebrate.
Suddenly, we heard loud explosions (爆炸声). Looking outside and up into the hills, we saw sparks (火花) flying from electrical transformers (变压器). Then our house went dark. I tried to find every candle we had and lit them. The candles made everything look lovely. But we had problems. We had fifteen people standing around and we still had to cook dinner. How would we do that without electricity?
The barbecue! Why not cook on the barbecue? We boys and men went outside, some holding flashlights and others cooking. We did a wonderful job. The girls and women stayed inside and got the salads ready. Everything was delicious. There were still a few hours to go before the begınning of the new year, so we all sat around the dining room table and sang up until a few minutes before midnight. We couldn’t watch the ball drop in Times Square on television but that wouldn’t stop us from celebrating. I stood on a chair and, with the help of someone’s watch to tell us the time, we all counted down and I dropped a tennis ball! We all screamed Happy New Year. We didn’t need electricity for that!
