My name is Henry Adams. When I was 27, I worked in San Francisco. One Saturday afternoon, I sailed my little boat but a strong wind pushed my boat into the Pacific Ocean. Luckily, I was saved by a British ship heading to London.
I had only one dollar when I arrived in London. I was tired and hungry. At that moment, the window of a nearby house opened and a man said to me, “Come in here, please.”I was taken to a beautiful room. There were two old gentlemen discussing something. ①
The two gentlemen were brothers. ② One brother said, “If an honest and clever stranger arrives in London without friends and money, except for a £1,00,000 bank note, he will starve to death. If he goes to the bank to change this big note, the police will think he stole it and arrest (逮捕) him.” The other brother answered, “No, I disagree.”
The two gentlemen decided to end their argument with a bet. ③ They chose me because I had an honest, clever face. Also, I was a stranger to England. One of them gave me an envelope and told me not to open it until I was in my hotel room.
④ After leaving the house, I opened the envelope and saw money inside of it! I rushed to the nearest restaurant. After eating, I tried to pay with the money but discovered that it was a bank note worth five million dollars! It made my head swim. No one could possibly cash (兑现金) it. The owner said, “You can pay for the meal whenever you want, sir. I understand that you are a rich gentleman. You like playing jokes on people by dressing like a poor man.”
I quickly returned to the house but was told that they had left on a trip. Then I remembered the letter inside the envelope. It said, “In this envelope you will find some money. It is yours for only 30 days. At the end of that time, return to this house. We have a bet on you.” How strange!
Then, I entered a clothes store to buy a cheap suit. When I showed the owner the bank note, he was angry since the salesman sold me such terrible suit.
(To be continued...)

There is great excitement and argument over Artificial Intelligence (AI). The argument about whether robots will replace teachers in the classroom is very heated. Some people think it is sure to happen in the next ten years. Others think that the value a good teacher brings, not only to the classroom setting, but in developing a child’s confidence and creativity outside lessons, cannot be easily replaced.
AI is not new for us and is already being used successfully in many fields, such as medicine, science and so on. So what does this mean for our future? In my view, AI will help kids to think more freely and creatively. Can AI possibly cut down the teaching work in the future? Of course. Our teachers are always busy preparing for their lessons. Just imagine how happy they will be if they don’t have to correct hundreds of papers, but instead, have this task or others done by machines.
However most importantly, I do not believe AI will be able to imitate the human mental condition totally, especially emotional intelligence (情商). What makes learning unforgettable is shared experience, the communication between people, and long-lasting positive relationships. For example, experienced teachers can comfort a student if he had a terrible experience. But no research shows that robots can imitate this well.
I also believe we need to develop our kids’ personality and their ability not only to make decisions but also make the right decision. To achieve this, depending only on AI is impossible.
In short, AI has both its advantages and disadvantages. To what degree can teachers use AI in their classes? You can have all the information you want with the help of AI, but great teachers will also need to depend on their own feelings.
8. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The successful usage of AI in many fields.
B. AI helps teachers to correct hundreds of papers.
C. How helpful AI will be to both students and teachers.
D. Teachers can help kids think more freely and creatively than AI.
9. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “imitate” in Paragraph 3?
A. Imagine. B. Produce. C. Control. D. Copy.
10. What’s the structure of the passage? (P—Paragraph)
A. B. C. D.
11 Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Will AI Replace Teachers in the Classroom?
B. What can AI Bring Students in the Classroom?
C. Is AI a Good Way to Help with Children’s Learning?
D. How do Teachers Use AI in Their Classroom Teaching?
D
If I had a cold, I wouldn’t think twice about telling my friends or my doctor. For some reason, however, if I had a mental (心理的) problem, I might not treat it in the same way.
At my elementary school, mental health was not discussed even once as far as I can remember. This makes me wonder how many other schools are failing to educate their students on this topic. It makes me sad that children growing up with mental illness may feel like it is something to be ashamed of (对……感到羞耻的) because it is never discussed. When I reached high school, mental health was still seldom discussed. But when it was in the topic of health or biology class, I was given a broad idea that mental illness was a “thing” that really lies.
In my opinion, overstressed high school students could benefit (获益) greatly from more deep discussions about how to deal with mental health problems, such as how to know when you should care about yourself or a friend, or who to reach out for help. I know my friends and I could have benefited. Even if you personally have never faced mental health problems, someone you know is sure to have, and you can offer timely help.
I also believe we need to normalize discussions about mental health at an early age, instead of hiding them from sight. At school, I saw a student’s report on mental health education and how it can be carried out in the American school system. The student used the film Inside Out to explain feelings to younger kids. This report made me believe that it is possible to start these discussions at a young age if we try.
Although we can’t change the way people think about mental health over one night, there are still things we can do. Asking our friends how they’re feeling is a good start.
12. How does the writer introduce his topic in Paragraph 1?
A. By showing facts. B. By giving numbers.
C. By making comparison. D. By sharing a story.
13. What does the writer learn from the student’s report?
A. Kids who are healthy outside might be ill inside.
B. Mental health discussions can be held with young kids.
C. The American school system is open to mental health education.
D. Watching educational films can help children with mental illness.
14. The underlined word “normalize” in Paragraph 4 means ________ in Chinese.
A. 使……清晰 B. 使……正常 C. 使……重要 D. 使……提前
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Mental health matters! B. Is it okay if it’s not good?
C. The earlier, the better! D. How to pay attention to mental health?
第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
根据下面材料内容,从方框中所给的A—E五个选项中选择正确的选项(其中一项是多余选项),将其序号填入1—4题,并回答5题。
Joking around with someone can be a pleasing thing. However, people may see it differently. 1 The jokes will become worse when you show you can’t accept them. You need to catch the fine line between laughing with someone and laughing at them.
2 To make a tease (取笑) feel proper, we need to consider the relationship between each other. A healthy tease should make both sides feel relaxed. When both sides know it’s simply a joke, a feeling of understanding can be created. The environment is important for close relationships. 3 But it doesn’t matter if your sister calls you by your nickname (绰号) when you’re at home.
Meanwhile, different people have different views on jokes. When making a joke, we naturally see the funny side of it. 4 We don’t know what experiences they have had, so we don’t know how they might understand the joke. Imagine a swimming party where one person doesn’t get in the pool. Others might tease him or her for not joining in or being unable to swim. But what if that person is afraid of water? Those doing the teasing might say they didn’t know. People might have their own personal reasons for not seeing the funny side.
Good relationships can be formed without putting others down. In our lives, we should pay attention to our words and actions and care about others’ feelings.
A. The level of relationship is key.
B. But other people might not see it in the same way.
C. Sometimes it may make people feel angry and painful.
D. Teasing is a good way to help people build friendship.
E. You may not feel good when you’re called by your nickname across the playground.
16. _________
17. _________
18. _________
19. _________
20. What should we consider (考虑) when we are joking? (no more than 20 words)
