I used to hate old books. When I say “old books”, I don’t mean classics, though. I mean books with yellow pages, broken spines (书脊) and odd wood-like smells that you need to be careful not to break because they are already so worn down and bring you severe discomfort. One can assume that I didn’t own many old books. I had merely a few here and there that my parents had gifted me, but nothing too special.
In the fourth grade, I was ready to explore a new world of reading, one that went beyond the likes of children’s chapter books and teenagers’ topics. Just then, I found my parents’ old copies of the entire Harry Potter book series. Visually, my parents’ books were my worst nightmare. I remember thinking to myself that there was no way I would be able to read these books. However, I eventually had to come to terms with the fact that if I wanted to read the series, I would have to read my parents’ copies. And so began the terrible journey of reading seven old books.
When it was time for me to read the final copy, I was kind of a changed woman. I still strongly disliked old books, but the plot of the entire Harry Potter series had attracted me so much I had almost entirely forgotten what the books looked like. By the end, I had devoted the entire Harry Potter bookshelf in my room.
Now, I love old books. While the covers are sometimes so worn down that you can barely read the title of the book, you can understand what it’s about anyway. After all, an old book is a representation of generations of readers who have chosen to live in a specific fictional world because the story it contains is just that good. Old books have meaning and I love how much they mean to me now.
4. What can we learn about the author from the first two paragraphs?
A. She felt uneasy about owning old books. B. She was on bad terms with her parents.
C. She grew fondness for reading classics. D. She was often gifted old books by her parents.
5. How did the author feel when seeing her parents’ Harry Potter series in the fourth grade?
A. Confused B. Scared C. Discouraged. D. Astonished.
6. What does the author mean by saying “I was kind of a changed woman” in paragraph 3?
A She started to enjoy reading fictional books. B. She began to ignore the appearance of the books.
C. She accepted putting old books on her shelf. D. She figured out what she truly wanted to read.
7. What is the best title of the text?
A. My Passion for Reading B. My Connection With Parents via Old Books
C My Encounter With the Harry Potter Series D. My Journey With Old Books
C
Advanced technology brings with it a lot of benefits to us. You can now prevent the speech of a single target person from being recorded by using a device called voice jammer.
Voice jammers work much like noise-canceling headphones, which effectively remove unwanted background sound waves out of existence by playing back a copy of the unwanted sound with its wave pattern inverted (反向的).
Such voice jammers generally stop electronic eavesdropping (窃听) on conversations by broadcasting inverse sound waves that affect all microphones within earshot.
This can prevent nearby people’s phones from picking up their voices if they try to make a call, and can stop them interacting with smart assistants, warning that something strange is going on.
Now Qiben Yan at Michigan State University and his colleagues have created a voice jammer that can target a specific voice without causing interruption to anyone else. They did this by training an artificial intelligence called a neural network to isolate (隔断) a speaker’s voice, allowing the jammer to create an inverse sound matched to their speech.
Rather than sending an audible sound their tool, called Neural Enhanced Cancellation (NEC), makes use of a bug found in all but the most expensive microphones. This bug introduces sounds at set distances above and below the microphone’s recording frequencies. NEC is able to play its inverse speech in the ultrasonic (超声波) range, so that humans can’t hear it. Doing this at the point of recording provides the necessary frequencies to secretly block an audible voice.
The team found that NEC blocked voices on a range of smartphones from Apple, Xiaomi and Samsung at a distance of up to 3.6 metres. And this technology could be useful.
8. How do voice jammers prevent a speech from being recorded?
A. By playing inverse sound waves. B. By interacting with smart assistants.
C. By keeping wave pattern unchanged. D. By broadcasting different sound waves.
9. What does Paragraph 6 focus on?
A. Stressing the importance of NEC. B. Showing the steps of using NEC.
C. Describing the disadvantages of NEC. D. Explaining the working theory of NEC.
10. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. The NEC blocking voices. B. A device against eavesdropping.
C. A bug playing inverse sound waves. D. The technology changing the speech.
11 What might be discussed in the following paragraph?
A. Disadvantages of voice jammers. B. Public opinions on voice jammers.
C. Further development of voice jammers. D. Potential applications of voice jammers.
D
Here’s a quick quiz. Person A does a favor for you. Person B asks you to do a favor for him. Who do you tend to like more? Surprisingly, the answer is Person B. This quirk (怪癖) of human nature is known as the Ben Franklin Effect.
Benjamin Franklin came across the phenomenon in 1736 when serving as a clerk to the Pennsylvania Assembly. A powerful member didn’t care for Franklin and threatened to make life miserable for him. What to do? Instead of winning him over with sweet talk, Franklin asked if he could borrow a rare and valuable book the man owned. This request altered the man’s attitude and paved the way for their friendship. Franklin’s takeaway: “He that has once done you a kindness will be ready to do you another, than he whom you yourself have obliged.”
Several studies have confirmed this. But how can we explain the Ben Franklin Effect? Some psychologists refer to cognitive dissonance (失调). It’s difficult to hold two contradictory thoughts at the same time. It makes us uncomfortable. We resolve this tension by changing our mind. “I don’t like Joe, but I am doing him a favor,” we might think. “So maybe I do like him.”
While cognitive dissonance explains a lot, it alone doesn’t explain the Ben Franklin Effect. One 2015 study found that it was, rather, the affiliative (亲和的) motive that the requests convey. That is, we humans want to maintain good relations with other humans, and one way to achieve this is by doing favors for others. This explains a lot about altruistic behavior. We like being useful and, by extension, we like those who give us the opportunity to do so. It’s in our genes.
Yet there is much we still don’t know about the Ben Franklin Effect. Does it apply equally across cultures? Is there a point beyond which asking a favor makes you less, not more likable? Asking to borrow a book is one thing; asking to borrow a car is another.
12. Why does the author mention Benjamin Franklin’s experience?
A. To illustrate a dilemma in making choices. B. To suggest a way of striking up friendships.
C. To stress the importance of strategic requests. D. To introduce the origin of the Ben Franklin Effect.
13. What is a reason for people’s tendency to like those asking for favors?
A. Reducing the tension caused by social contact.
B. Increasing the chance of getting help in return.
C. Avoiding the discomfort from conflicting thoughts.
D. Establishing a cooperative community of shared trust.
14. What does the underlined word “altruistic” probably mean in paragraph 4?
A. Selfless. B. Impolite. C. Aggressive. D. Responsible.
15. What does the author think of the Ben Franklin Effect?
A. It makes little sense. B. It applies to most cultures.
C. It has situational limitations. D. It has great practical significance.

My middle child, Jake, was smart and good-looking, but he always sees the cup of life as half empty. Every day when he came home from school, Jake would list everything bad that happened that day!
On his ninth birthday, we saved enough money to take the family to Disneyland for two days. His dad and I didn’t make much then, so it cost a considerable amount, but we felt Jake’s birthday was worth it. After doing Disneyland to death (玩够了), we returned to our hotel room, all exhausted. And I asked the birthday boy, “Did you have fun today, Jake?”
All my fault-finding son could say to me was “Pirates (海盗) of the Caribbean was closed!” “Jake Marshall,” I was clearly unable to contain my anger, “we stood in line for an hour and a half to see The Haunted Mansion. We rode Space Mountain three times. We spent two days playing in the park, and all you can say is, Pirates of the Caribbean was closed?” Clearly, something had to be done about his negative attitude and I was going to be the one to do it!
I was determined to help him. I read every article and bought every book. With the help of great resources, I found my son had the tendency to see the worst in every situation. My research told me that people with negativity have an emotional need for order and sensitivity. That meant I needed to listen to my son’s daily pessimistic reports. My usual reaction was to try to talk Jake out of his negativity, but that wouldn’t satisfy his need for sensitivity, so I had to let him finish his complaints and ask what good things happened. Then I needed to wait until he could tell me. This would help Jake realize that good things really were happening to him.
注意:
1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;
One day Jake came home from school and complained as usual.

A. She started to enjoy reading fictional books. B. She began to ignore the appearance of the books.
C. She accepted putting old books on her shelf. D. She figured out what she truly wanted to read.
7. What is the best title of the text?
A. My Passion for Reading B. My Connection With Parents via Old Books
C. My Encounter With the Harry Potter Series D. My Journey With Old Books
A 5. C 6. B 7. D

I mean books with yellow pages, broken spines and odd wood-like smells that you need to be careful not to break because they are already so worn down and bring you severe discomfort.(我过去讨厌旧书。 故选A项。
根据第二段“In the fourth grade, I was ready to explore a new world of reading, one that went beyond the likes of children’s chapter books and teenagers’ topics.(在四年级的时候,我已经准备好去探索一个新的阅读世界,一个超越儿童章节书和青少年主题的世界)”以及“Visually, my parents’ books were my worst nightmare.
Rather than sending an audible sound, their tool, called Neural Enhanced Cancellation (NEC), makes use of a bug found in all but the most expensive microphones.
11. What might be discussed in the following paragraph?
A. Disadvantages of voice jammers. B. Public opinions on voice jammers.

D 13. C 14. A 15. C

A powerful member didn’t care for Franklin and threatened to make life miserable for him. What to do? Instead of winning him over with sweet talk, Franklin asked if he could borrow a rare and valuable book the man owned. This request altered the man’s attitude and paved the way for their friendship. Franklin’s takeaway: “He that has once done you a kindness will be ready to do you another, than he whom you yourself have obliged.”(本杰明·富兰克林(Benjamin Franklin)在1736年担任宾夕法尼亚州议会书记员时遇到了这种现象。

根据划线词前文“One 2015 study found that it was, rather, the affiliative (亲和的) motive that the requests convey. That is, we humans want to maintain good relations with other humans, and one way to achieve this is by doing favors for others.(2015年的一项研究发现,更确切地说,这是请求所传达的亲和动机。也就是说,我们人类希望与他人保持良好的关系,而实现这一目标的一种方式就是帮助他人。)”以及下文“We like being useful and, by extension, we like those who give us the opportunity to do so. It’s in our genes.(我们喜欢成为有用的人,推而广之,我们喜欢那些给我们这样做机会的人。这是我们的基因。)”可推断,划线词所在句说明人类希望通过帮助他人来保持良好的关系,这解释了无私的行为,因此推断画线词与selfless“无私的”意思相近。故选A。
根据文章最后一段“Yet there is much we still don’t know about the Ben Franklin Effect. Does it apply equally across cultures? Is there a point beyond which asking a favor makes you less, not more likable? Asking to borrow a book is one thing; asking to borrow a car is another.(然而,我们对本·富兰克林效应还有很多不了解的地方。

结合句意,“the village was established in the late Yuan Dynasty”是时间状语从句,主句谓语has produced使用了现在完成时态,从句是主句动作的起点,用连词since引导该从句,意为“自从……以来”。故填since。
故填an。
故填being。
故填where。
故填was included。
故填to restore。

The Original English Poetry Presentation Activity
In the middle of October, the Original Poetry Presentation was held in each class of Grade Two in our school as planned.
Different classes carried out this presentation in different forms. Some classes sat on the grass and in a circle. Students, together with their English teacher, appreciated the poems, sang songs and laughed happily. Other classes preferred sitting in the classroom. Students took turns to go to the stage and presented the poems written by themselves.
Buried in the poetic world of laughter and applause, students have not only learnt to express themselves better, but also become more and more confident.

注意:
1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;
One day Jake came home from school and complained as usual.

From then on, Jake came to understand the power of seeing good points.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One day Jake came home from school and complained as usual. He listed the terrible things at school. I listened carefully, looking at him and nodding now and then. After his complaint, I asked what good things happened to him. “Nothing.” His response was what I could expect. “Something good must have happened. Think it over, my boy.” I encouraged with a gentle smile. After about fifteen minutes’ effort, he admitted being praised by his head teacher for helping cleaning the front desk. Through this practice, he realized something good really happened to him.
From then on, Jake came to understand the power of seeing good points. He would not just consider everything awful, but was willing to discover something awesome. And to my great joy, he kept patient and peaceful during his sharing. He even danced in excitement at wonderful things. I witnessed his attitude changing from negativity to positivity. The path to getting there seemed to be a struggle, but he was making headway. My hard work was paying off and I believed Jake would get used to seeing the cup of life as half full.
