一、阅读理解
Passage1. There is a large brown chair looking out over the sea. It’s too big for your kitchen but small enough to climb onto, and the views are great. On one side of the chair is the word “Relax”, and on the other side it says “Smile”. In the middle it says “Southern Point of Europe.”
Welcome to the Greek island of Gavdos. Although it’s thought to be the southernmost piece of Europe, it’s not one of Greek better-known islands—it’s closer to Africa than to Athens, the Greek capital. The Canary Islands, which are part of Spain, are further south, but they’re usually considered to be part of Africa.
Gavdos, which is home to just one school, one policeman and fewer than 70 citizens, has played an important part in stories for centuries. For different reasons, it’s still featured in (是……的特征)stories today. Not far south of the large island of Crete, it was once named as Cauda. Some people still think it might be the place where Odysseus was imprisoned(关押)in Homer’s The Odyssey, although most experts don’t agree.
That doesn’t stop Greeks and others who love the island sharing the idea! In fact, it was used a little like a prison(监狱)in the 20th century because it was so far away. Now, that’s exactly why travelers choose to take a trip there in summer, looking for a different beach holiday, far from hotels and people.
But now Gavdos often appears in the news stories. In 2024, hundreds of people arrived on the island from Africa and Asia. These are people who hope that Gavdos is the next chapter(章) in stories of their own.

A.Where Gavdos is. B.What Gavdos looks like.
C.Why people love Gavdos. D.What people think of Gavdos.
3.What attracts tourists lo come to Gavdos?
A.It mixes African and European cultures.
B.There is a famous prison on it.
C.It provides a chance to enjoy a peaceful holiday.
D.There are many unknown things for them to discover.
4.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To tell a story. B.To share his experience.
C.To introduce an island. D.To give suggestions on traveling.
Passage2. Many people prefer to have a bottle of water with them wherever they go, and most typically they use disposable (一次性的) plastic bottles for this purpose. Despite the convenience of this approach, it’s worth considering a move away from bottled water.
Plastic water bottles greatly contribute to the environmental crises that we’re currently facing. Of course plastic can be recycled, but only a small portion of waste is processed properly and reused again. Most of the plastic packaging ends up either in the landfills or in the oceans. While our world’s oceans are faced with 8.8 million tons of new plastic material every year, we must admit that plastic water bottles share part of the blame for this problem.
By using disposable water bottles on a regular basis, consumers create continued financial motivation for the water companies to keep producing huge amounts of waste, while it’s nearly impossible to monitor how the bottles are manufactured and which percentage is made of recycled plastic. Many brands advertise a variety of beneficial effects, but in reality bottled water passes through an industrial facility and may be polluted in quite a few ways.
On the other hand, the impact of water impurities (杂质) can directly lead to serious health problems if such water is consumed over a long period. Some of the water impurities may be of chemical nature, like chlorine or calcium, and they can damage the skin. In rare cases it’s possible to trace amounts of highly poisonous materials in the bottled water products, which apparently results in dangerous results. That’s why it’s highly recommended to use both your own portable water bottle on the road as well as a water purification device at home to ensure that the water you are drinking daily is completely free of anything that could harm your health.
Now that you’re aware of how bottled water s pretty harmful not only to humans but also to wildlife and environment, are you ready to say good bye to it?

Passage3. It’s a warm June afternoon, and in a group of bushes and trees, a bird sings. A small insect climbs over a leaf. The Muziekplein forest, next to an 18-story building and a railway line, is about the size of a basketball court; before it was planted in 2018, the area was a parking place. The forest is one of seven such extremely small forests in the Dutch city of Utrecht, and 144 across the Netherlands. By the end of this year, according to IVN Nature Education, the organization proposing the country’s initiative (计划), there will be 200.
Since the first forest was planted in the Netherlands in 2015, the concept has become popular. Daan Bleichrodt, who launched IVN’s Tiny Forest initiative with the goal of making it easier for children to get into and connect with nature, said that he thinks it is popular because people are becoming more aware of major environmental challenges. It’s a very practical way to do something positive in the light of climate change and loss of biodiversity.
Jeroen Schenkels, a senior adviser for the city of Utrecht on green planning, said he sees the mini-forests as nature-based approaches that are able to help the city weather heat waves and improve water retention (保持). But one of the biggest interests is social. “One of the most important things is that they give people the opportunity to be involved in nature in the neighbourhood,” Schenkels said.
Between 2018 and 2020, 40 different plant and animal groups and 121 total animal species were found in the Muziekplein forest alone. According to Wageningen University researchers, across the 11 tiny forests in their study, volunteers observed 636 animal species. They also identified 298 plant species in addition to the original species planted in the plots. Maintenance(维护) of the forests occasionally involves removing aggressive weeds, but in general new plant species, such as wild flowers that appear, are allowed to grow.
1.What do we know about the Muziekplein forest?
A.It is newly planted. B.It sits in an urban area.
C.It grows along a railway. D.It is shaped like a basketball court.
2.What’s the purpose of the Tiny Forest initiative?
A.To make people realize environmental challenges.
B.To make nature more accessible to children.
C.To increase the Netherlands’ biodiversity.
D.To call for action on climate change.
3.What does Paragraph 3 focus on?
A.Benefits of mini-forests in cities. B.Ways to keep neighborhoods green.
C.Inspiration for planting forests in cities. D.Importance of being exposed to nature.
4.How does the author state the forests’ effect on biodiversity?
A.By listing figures. B.By giving examples.
C.By doing experiments. D.By making comparisons.
Passage4. Despite being one of the most famous and most-visited attractions in the United States, Grand Canyon National Park still holds some surprises. Here are a few facts about the Grand Canyon you probably don’t know.
We don’t really know how old it is
It has long been believed that the Colorado River began carving the Grand Canyon about 6 million years ago, but a study contained a real shocker, suggesting that the process may have begun as far back as 70 million years. In all likelihood, the Grand Canyon as we know it today started out as a series of smaller canyons 70 million years ago, but the majority of the canyon did not begin to take shape until much more recently.
The Grand Canyon creates its own weather
Of all Grand Canyon facts, this one is pretty cool — no pun (双关语) intended. Sudden changes in elevation (海拔) have great effects on temperature and rainfall, so the weather you’re experiencing could change largely depending on where you are in the Grand Canyon. The coldest, wettest weather station in the area is the Bright Angel Ranger Station on the North Rim, while the hottest (and one of the driest) is just 8 miles away at Phantom Ranch.
There are lots of fossils in the area
While the dinosaurs might have missed out on seeing the Grand Canyon, lots of other fossils have been found that suggest other creatures often visited the area. They range from ancient marine fossils dating back 1.2 billion years to fairly recent land mammals that left their remains in canyon caves about 10,000 years ago.
Fish are relatively uncommon in the area
Prior to modern flood control measures, the Colorado River provided a uniquely difficult habitat for fish, with heavy silt, frequent floods, and temperatures ranging from extreme heat in summer to sub-freezing in winter. As a result, only eight fish species are native to the Grand Canyon, six of which are found nowhere outside of the Colorado River.
1.What is the weather like in the Great Canyon?
A.It is pretty cool. B.It is extremely hot.
C.It is unusually cold. D.It changes from place to place.
2.Why are fish relatively unusual in the area?
A.It has a special geological phenomenon.
B.The temperature here is relatively stable.
C.It offers tough habitats for fish with extreme temperature.
D.There are eight fish species unique to the world.
3.Which section of a magazine is the text most likely from?
A.Geography. B.Life. C.Stories. D.Science.
Passage5. Every year, travelers head to South America to be amazed at the vast glaciers, huge open skies and high mountains. But at Omora Ethnobotanical Park on Tierra del Fuego, visitors are encouraged to think small.
Tierra del Fuego, a remote island at the tip of South America, might offer little in terms of animals and trees, but when it comes to bryophytes (苔藓植物), it is among the richest corners of the planet. In the area that covers less than 0.01% of the Earth’s land surface, more than 5% of the world’s bryophyte species is found.
On entering the park, you’re given a magnifying lens (放大镜). Guided by plant experts, you are invited to get down on your hands and knees to explore the little-known world of Tierra del Fuego’s “miniature forests” — the bryophytes that cover the rocks and trees. Focus is key: as you tiptoe through the park, it is easy to miss or even step on them.
I wondered how interesting mosses could be. But when I got up close, they started to come to life. Shapes and colors appeared that were not visible to the naked eye. One plant was bright yellow, while another was green with a bright red tip like a little hat.
One of the strangest plants is Old Man’s Beard, which looks like thin noodles and hangs off the trees in webs. According to my guide Lily Lewis, it plays an important role in the growth of the forest, capturing nutrients (营养) and salts blown in on the ocean wind.
Old Man’s Beard is extremely vulnerable to pollution, and has all but disappeared across much of the planet. But in Tierra del Fuego, where the air and rain are among the cleanest on the planet, it grows wildly.
“The hand lens is your entry point into the world of the miniature forests,” Lewis said. “Looking through a lens reminds you that there are other viewpoints from which we can see the world.”
1.Which title best describes Tierra del Fuego?
A.A wonderland for tiny plants. B.A unique place for rare species.
C.A top destination for hiking lovers. D.A remote land with different landscapes.

C.A Tiny Forest on the Tip of the World D.Start Your Journey of Discovery, Now!
Passage5. China’s tea culture is an ancient and profound (意义深远的) cultural heritage that has been passed down and developed for thousands of years. It weaves an complicated and fascinating pattern within Chinese society.
Tea growing in China is an art form in itself. The tea-growing areas, with their special climates and lands, produce teas of exceptional quality. From the misty mountains of Fujian to the green landscapes of Yunnan, different areas offer a rich variety of tea types.
The process of making tea is careful and detailed. It involves exact measurements of water temperature, the right amount of tea leaves, and a certain steeping time to get the fullest flavor and smell. This care for details shows the Chinese people’s search for excellence in all parts of life.
Tea is not merely a beverage; it is a thing that helps social relations. It brings people together, whether in family get-togethers, friendly meetings, or business talks. The act of sharing a cup of tea is a sign of kindness and connection. And the many tea-houses all over the country offer places for people to relax, talk, and enjoy the peace that tea gives. Moreover, tea ceremonies are an important part of Chinese culture. These ceremonies are complex and formal, showing the grace and elegance of Chinese traditions. They involve exact movements and a deep respect for the tea and the process.
In addition to its social and cultural importance, tea in China is also known for its possible health benefits. It is thought to have anti-oxidant (抗氧化的) features and is linked to various good effects on physical health.
As China keeps moving forward and modernizing, its tea culture is still strongly fixed, a proof of its historical and cultural importance. It keeps attracting both the Chinese people and those from around the world, inviting them to explore and enjoy the beauty and depth of this great cultural phenomenon.

Passage6. “It’s not unusual for guests to feel emotional when they discover the story behind our food,” says Patrick Navis. “Not to mention when they taste it. One even cried with happiness.” The setting for these tearful scenes? Navis’s restaurant in a Dutch city. Here, the owner and his team create experimental food using herbs, roots, flowers and nuts— some common, others less so.
Most of these ingredients come from the Ketelbroek Food Forest nearby. To the untrained eye, it’s like an ordinary wood. But there’s one key difference: everything in it is edible (可食用的). It was set up in 2009 by Dutch botanist and environmentalist Noah Eck as an experiment in slow farming, to see what would happen if the right combination of food plants were left to grow together like a natural forest, without chemicals.
“It’s the first ‘food forest’ of its kind in Europe and we’re one of the few restaurants around the world cooperating in this way,” says Navis. “We have over 400 different species of edible plants we plan our menus around, including some we previously knew little about.” He harvests the ingredients and, with his fellow chefs, works them into beautifully presented tasting menus, served in a dining room hidden in the backstreets of the city,
“To us, fine dining is not about the fame of a restaurant, its location, expensive decoration, fancy cooking and wine list,” says Navis. “It’s about adding value through creativity and using ingredients nobody knows of, which are grown with great attention.” However, he adds, luxury cooking can be about enhancing everyday ingredients, too.
“When looking at cooking in this way, who can argue that caviar (鱼子酱), for example, is more valuable than a carrot grown with specialist knowledge?”
Experimentation is extremely important to Navis. In the next five years, he hopes to open an outdoor restaurant. But for now, the most important thing is to continue focusing on how plants are being grown and the perennial system used in the Food Forest, reducing the need for replanting each season.
1.What can we learn about Navis’s restaurant?
A.It is known for its rare food sources. B.It serves food with moving stories.
C.It offers experimental food for free. D.It is well received by its guests.
2.How is Ketelbrock Food Forest different from ordinary woods?
A.It is a natural forest. B.Diverse plants coexist in it.
C.It provides safe food ingredients. D.Plants there take longer to grow.
3.What is the key element of fine dining according to Navis?
A.Convenient locations. B.Expensive ingredients.
C.Innovative menus. D.Fancy cooking techniques.
4.What does “the perennial system” in the last paragraph probably refer to?
A.Farming with proper use of chemicals. B.The sustainable farming practice.
C.Natural farming without human intervention. D.An experimental farm for an outdoor restaurant.

4.推理判断题。纵观全文,结合第二段首句“Welcome to the Greek island of Gavdos. Although it’s thought to be the southernmost piece of Europe, it’s not one of Greek better-known islands—it’s closer to Africa than to Athens, the Greek capital.(欢迎来到希腊加夫多斯岛。虽然它被认为是欧洲最南端的一块,但它不是希腊最著名的岛屿之一——它比希腊首都雅典更靠近非洲。)”以及第三段首句“Gavdos, which is home to just one school, one policeman and fewer than 70 citizens, has played an important part in stories for centuries.(加夫多斯只有一所学校、一名警察和不到70名公民,几个世纪以来,它在故事中发挥了重要作用。)”和第四段的“That doesn’t stop Greeks and others who love the island sharing the idea! In fact, it was used a little like a prison(监狱)in the 20th century because it was so far away. Now, that’s exactly why travelers choose to take a trip there in summer, looking for a different beach holiday, far from hotels and people.(这并不能阻止希腊人和其他热爱这座岛屿的人分享这一想法!事实上,它在20世纪有点像监狱,因为它太远了。现在,这正是为什么旅行者选择在夏天去那里旅行,寻找一个不同的海滩度假,远离酒店和人群。)”可知,作者介绍了位于希腊的Gavdos岛的位置、历史背景以及现在的状况。因此作者写作的目的应该是介绍一个岛屿。故选C项。
1.How does the author feel when it comes to plastic water bottles?
A.These bottles have caught most people’s attention.
B.They have created great convenience to our life.
C.They should have been recycled to great extent.
D.They have caused terrible impact on the earth.
2.What can we infer according to the third paragraph?
A.The water companies are seeking for high profits.
B.You should be cautious when deciding on bottled water.
C.The bottles are made from non- recycled plastic.
D.You should choose the famous brands of bottled water.
3.What is likely to make the consumers worried?
A.Water in the bottles kept for a long time. B.The bottles made of different materials.
C.The bottled water with a lot of impurities. D.The complex procedure of producing bottles.
4.Which of the following can sum up the passage?
A.Why You Need to Break Your Bottled Water Habit?
B.How the Plastic Bottled Water Is Actually Produced?
C.Why Most People Have a Preference for Bottled Water?
D.How Plastic Bottles Create Influence to Environment?

B.Life. C.Stories. D.Science.
【答案】1.D 2.C 3.A

2.What quality is highly valued while exploring Omora Ethnobotanical Park?
A.Curiosity and creativity. B.Quickness and confidence.
C.Calmness and attentiveness. D.Determination and courage.
3.Which can best replace the underlined word “vulnerable”?
A.Sensitive. B.Adaptable. C.Beneficial. D.Resistant.
4.What is the best title for the text?
A.Eco-tourism in Tierra del Fuego B.An Encounter with Old Man’s Beard
C.A Tiny Forest on the Tip of the World D.Start Your Journey of Discovery, Now!
【答案】1.A 2.C 3.A 4.C
