I work with Volunteers for Wildlife, a rescue and education organization at Bailey Arboretum in Locust Valley. Trying to help injured, displaced or sick creatures can be heartbreaking; survival is never certain. However, when it works, it is simply beautiful.
I got a rescue call from a woman in Muttontown. She had found a young owl(猫头鹰) on the ground. When I arrived, I saw a 2-to 3-week-old owl. It had already been placed in a carrier for safety.
I examined the chick(雏鸟) and it seemed fine. If I could locate the nest, I might have been able to put it back, but no luck. My next work was to construct a nest and anchor it in a tree.
The homeowner was very helpful. A wire basket was found. I put some pine branches into the basket to make this nest safe and comfortable. I placed the chick in the nest, and it quickly calmed down.
Now all that was needed were the parents, but they were absent. I gave the homeowner a recording of the hunger screams of owl chicks. These advertise the presence of chicks to adults; they might also encourage our chick to start calling as well. I gave the owner as much information as possible and headed home to see what news the night might bring.
A nervous night to be sure, but sometimes the spirits of nature smile on us all! The homeowner called to say that the parents had responded to the recordings. I drove over and saw the chick in the nest looking healthy and active. And it was accompanied in the nest by the greatest sight of all — LUNCH! The parents had done their duty and would probably continue to do so.
24. What is unavoidable in the author’s rescue work according to paragraph 1?
A. Efforts made in vain.
B. Getting injured in his work.
C. Feeling uncertain about his future.
D. Creatures forced out of their homes.
25. Why was the author called to Muttontown?
A. To rescue a woman.
B To take care of a woman.
C To look at a baby owl.
D. To cure a young owl.
26. What made the chick calm down?
A. A new nest.
B. Some food.
C. A recording.
D Its parents.
27. How would the author feel about the outcome of the event?
A. It’s unexpected.
B. It’s beautiful.
C. It’s humorous.
D. It’s discouraging.

After bikes and umbrellas are made sharable across China, some companies started eyeing the fitness market, so shared gym rooms have hit the streets in Beijing.
Unlike common gyms that provide large, open spaces for many members to share at the same time, the newly built shared gym rooms are small, stand-alone (独立的) rooms for a person to use, often set up near living communities.
Every four-square-meter room provides a treadmill (跑步机), an air cleaner, a mirror, a television and an air conditioner, and users can let down the curtains (窗 帘) for privacy. When exercising, users can listen to music, watch movies and check emails by connecting to the Internet by the screen fixed on the treadmill. But there’s no shower.
Similar to using a shared bike, users can locate (定位) a shared gym room by a smartphone app, book a room in advance and then need to scan a QR code (二维码) for use. A refundable deposit (保证金) of 99 yuan is required, and users are charged 1 yuan every 5 minutes.
The shared gym rooms are created by Misspao, a Beijing-based technology company founded in July. Within several months since it was founded, the company has already raised over 100 million yuan. However, the idea of the shared fitness experience is not totally nascent. Last December, the company VRUN set up shared treadmills in office and apartment buildings.
The sharing economy is still becoming popular in China. According to Yicai Global, confident people are pouring millions into sharing start-ups. In March, the State Information Center published a report which predicts that the total value of China’s sharing economy will see a yearly growth of 40% in the coming years, and it is expected to make a great contribution to the country’s GDP.
28. What makes the shared gym room different from the common one?
A. Holding one person at a time. B. Standing in the living zone.
C. Offering open spaces. D. Having some advanced equipment.
29. What do people need to do to use the shared gym room?
A. Let down curtains for privacy.
B. Pay 100 yuan first.
C. Use a smartphone to book a room ahead of time.
D. Have a shower before exercise.
30. What does the underlined word “nascent” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Simple. B. Popular. C. Satisfying. D. New.
31. What is the author’s purpose of writing the text?
A. To advertise a technology company. B. To introduce shared gym rooms.
C. To support the shared gym rooms. D. To predict the future of shared gym rooms.
D
You may have already seen them in some restaurants around the world; robots. They are about the size of a child. They can welcome people and lead them to their tables. They can deliver food and drinks and bring dirty dishes back to the kitchen.
Many people think robot waiters are the answer to worker shortages. Sales of robots have been growing in recent years. There are tens of thousands of them now moving through eating places worldwide.
But others say robot waiters still have a long way to go before they can replace humans. They cannot take orders. And they cannot walk up steps to different areas of a restaurant.
Still the use of robots is growing. In Madison Heights, Michigan, Li Zhai was having trouble finding workers for his restaurant Noodle Topia in the summer of 2021. So, he bought a robot from Pudu Robotics. The robot was so successful that he added two more; now, one robot leads diners to their seats while another delivers food to tables. And his employees load dirty dishes onto the third robot to bring them back to the kitchen.
Zhai said he now needs three people to do the same work that five or six people used to do. And they save him money. A robot costs around $15,000, he said, but a person costs him $5,000 to $6,000 per month. Zhai noted that the robots give his human servers more time to spend with diners, which increases tips. And diners often post videos of the robots on social media, which leads to more visits. “Besides saving labor, the robots benefit business,” he said.
But not all restaurants have had success with robots. Chili’s introduced a robot server in 2020. The restaurant company expanded the test to 61 U.S. restaurants before suddenly stopping last August. Chili’s found that the robot moved too slowly and got in the way of human servers. And 58 percent of guests surveyed said robots did not improve their overall experience.
32. What is Li Zhai’s third robot used to do?
A. Lead diners to their seats. B. Deliver food to tables.
C. Take orders from customers. D. Carry away dirty dishes.
33. What do Li Zhai’s words mainly tell us in Paragraph 5?
A. The popularity of robots. B. The low prices of robots.
C. The advantages of using robots. D. The impression of robots on people.
34. Why did Chili’s give up robot servers?
A. They broke down easily.
B. They didn’t work well enough.
C. They often made big mistakes.
D. They couldn’t understand customers’ demand.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Are Robot Waiters the Future? B. Will Human Servers Lose Jobs?
C. Robots Will Never Replace Humans D. Robot Services Are Better Than Humans
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Apologizing is how we live in peace with others, yet few of us know how to do it well — and not defensively. Just as often, apologies don’t happen at all out of fear that they’ll be uncomfortable or ineffective. ____36____ They help solidify(使变稳固) relationships and mend trust, both of which can lower stress and improve mental health. If you’re ready for your fault, here are four key s to apologizing well.
1. ____37____
Apologies are better late than early, says Cindy Hantz, a social psychologist who has researched how timing influences apology effectiveness. “What we found is that people usually tend to offer an apology as soon as possible,” she says. “It’s an effort to shut the whole incident down. You can’t deliver an effective apology until the injured person believes that you fully understand what you did wrong. If the apology comes before that, it’s not going to be seen as sincere.”
2. Accept responsibility.
Why should you apologize if you’re both at fault? ____38____ “But I like to encourage people to really focus on taking responsibility for the parts of the conflict that they’re responsible for.” Schumann says. Calling attention to the fact that we’re also hurt is normal, but save it for later on in the conversation.
3. Be clear about how you plan to repair things.
One of the core elements of an apology is making reparations. That will be possible in a direct way: You broke their favorite wineglass? Buy them a new one. Spilled coffee on their new dress? Pay for the dry cleaning. ____39____ It’s important for the other person to hear that this is not going to continue... and they can trust you to improve your behavior in the future.
4. Don’t expect forgiveness.
An apology is a starting point. Particularly with severe faults, the person wronged will often need time and space to heal. Schumann suggests saying like this: “I understand this isn’t going to fix everything, and I want to continue to do whatever I can to make up for my mistake. I hope that even if you’re not ready to forgive me, ____40____ ”
A. Don’t rush into it.
B. Start with specific words.
C. it’s important not to pressure them.
D. That’s exactly the problem many people struggle with.
E. you’re open to working with me to get us to a point where we can move forward.
F. Sometimes you can’t repair what’s happened, but you can think about the relationship moving forward.
G. But sincere apologies bring a host of benefits to the person delivering the message and the one receiving it.

【答案】Dear Shirly,
I understand your concerns about your study exchange in the UK, but remember that you’re more prepared than you think. Embrace this opportunity with confidence!
Firstly, immerse yourself in the language and culture by speaking with locals, watching British shows, and exploring the surroundings. It will broaden your horizons and boost your language skills. Besides, you’d better not be afraid to make mistakes, as it’s an essential part of learning. By doing this, you can not only challenge yourself to try something new, but build up your self-confidence and esteem as well.
Stay positive and I’m sure you’ll return with amazing memories and improved language fluency.
Yours,
Li Hua
