As a child I was one of the 125 people at our family gathering for New Year. These days we were a much smaller group in Belle Valley, Ohio. I insisted on acting as hostess and wanted to bring back the joy I’d felt at my childhood New Year that filled with love.
As family members arrived at the hall, I handed each one of them a numbered card and said, “Time for the alphabet (字母) game.” “What kind of game is that?” one of my great-grandchildren asked. “Well,” I said, “who’s got number one?” A cousin raised her hand. “Tell us something you never forget,” I said. “Something that begins with the letter A.” My cousin smiled. “Apple pie!” she said. Great-granddaughter Mindy was next. “B,” she said. “I am impressed by Buckeye Country.” “Cookies!” Number 3 shouted.
Until Number 17, “The next one’s a challenge,” I said. “Who’s got 17?” Ryan, my son, slowly raised his hand. “Q,” he said. “Quaker City Carnival (嘉年华).” The room went silent. “It’s one of the oldest traditions in Ohio,” Ryan said. “Grandma and Grandpa met there. That’s where they fell in love. That’s where this whole thing started. This whole family.” Ryan looked around the room, making eye contact with everyone. “We wouldn’t be here celebrating New Year together if it wasn’t for Quaker City Carnival.”
The room burst into laughter and was full of love. “This is the best New Year we’ve ever had,” a great-grandson said to me secretly. Whatever their New Year would look like when they grew up, they’d remember this one. And for me, I had an unforgettable New Year to treasure — a memory where love started with the letter Q.
4. Why did the author want to organize the alphabet game?
A. To enjoy the family gathering. B. To act as the hostess of the New Year party.
C. To share moving stories with family. D. To experience long-lost New Year happiness.
5. Based on the game rule, which word will you give if you get number 23?
A. Teddy Bear. B. Yogurt. C. Steak. D. Watermelon.
6. Why did Ryan’s story get family members’ laughter?
A. They understood the meaning of love. B. They knew their grandparents better.
C. It was connected with their family roots. D. It brought a tradition back to them.
7. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A Letter Full of Love B. A Traditional New Year Game
C A Family Custom at New Year D. A Love Story About the Carnival

The introduction of the iPad, with its touch screen technology, has allowed even very young children to take advantage of a computer. So what if all children in the school were given an iPad to use in class and take home with them?
Anne Laure Bazin works in a school where every child, teacher and teaching assistant is given a free iPad to use in and out of lessons. The main advantage of everyone having an iPad has been the improvement in communication. Documents can be emailed straight over to workmates during a meeting. Children hand in their homework by e-mail or through the school’s learning environment. Teachers now take the register using the iPad, which means that there is a centralized record of which children are in school, and which classroom they are in.
The use of iPads has encouraged greater sharing of resources among teachers. All communication with parents is now done by e-mail. Working as a group in class is much easier as children can share documents. The whole class can look at one child’s book by attaching the iPad to the whiteboard. Has forgotten the textbook. The teacher can take a photograph of the relevant and send it to the student in class.
While the use of the iPad in schools has revolutionized the way children are taught, it hasn’t completely replaced more traditional methods of teaching. Worksheets are still used in class as some children prefer the contact. The children all have a textbook and exercise books. In Anne Laure’s school, Parents feared that the iPads would replace and the children would lose handwriting skills. Anne Laure says, “The teachers are not ready to let go of the traditional style of teaching. We have welcomed the iPads in so much as they help communication and widen the resources that can be used. But we are not ready to let go of paper yet. The children themselves still value their exercise books and depend on them for revision.”
8. What can teachers do when everyone uses an iPad in school?
A. They can have deep conversations with students.
B. They can have more time to prepare the lessons.
C They can learn more about students’ activities at home.
D. They can communicate with their workmates more conveniently.
9. What is an advantage of using iPads in the classroom?
A. It saves students bringing the textbooks.
B. It reduces parents’ worry about teaching.
C. It improves the relationship between teachers.
D. It makes sharing information easier.
10. What is parents’ attitude towards the use of iPads in the classroom?
A. Worried. B. Uncaring. C. Annoyed. D. Positive.
11. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. Teachers prefer traditional methods of teaching.
B. The iPads won’t take the place of printed materials.
C. More and more schools are using iPads.
D. Exercise books are more valuable now.
D 9. D 10. A 11. B

由第四段中的“While the use of the iPad in schools has revolutionized the way children are taught, it hasn’t completely replaced more traditional methods of teaching. (虽然iPad在学校的使用彻底改变了孩子们的教学方式,但它并没有完全取代更传统的教学方式)”,“The children all have a textbook and exercise books. (孩子们都有课本和练习本)”以及“The teachers are not ready to let go of the traditional style of teaching. We have welcomed the iPads in so much as they help communication and widen the resources that can be used. But we are not ready to let go of paper yet. The children themselves still value their exercise books and depend on them for revision. (老师们还没有准备好放弃传统的教学方式。我们非常欢迎iPad,因为它有助于沟通,拓宽了可使用的资源。但我们还没有准备好放弃纸。孩子们自己仍然珍视他们的练习本,并依赖它们来复习)”可知,最后一段主要是说 iPads在学校中的使用变革了儿童的教育方式,但它并没有完全取代更传统的教学方法,B项“iPads并没有完全取代传统的纸质教材”符合段落中心大意。故选B项。

It is often said the laughter is the best medicine. But researchers at the University of Oxford think the ability to belly laughs (捧腹大笑) was unique to early humans. This, they believe, made our ancestors (祖先) able to form much larger groups.
The researchers first tested the pain thresholds (临界值) of some volunteers. They divided them into two groups. One group was shown15 minutes of comedy videos, while the other was shown boring programs.
Through this experiment, the researchers found that those who had recently experienced belly laughs were able to withstand (忍受) up to 10% more pain than they had done before watching the videos. To their surprise, the scientists also found that the other group was less able to withstand pain after watching 15 minutes of the “boring” programs.
Professor Robin Dunbar of Oxford University, who led the research, believed that belly laughs release chemicals called endorphins (安多芬) into the body which make us feel less painful.
However, not all comedy programs had such effects, according to Prof Dunbar. For example, though clever stand-up comedy was found to be enjoyable, it had no effect on raising pain thresholds. “Things that worked very well were interesting comedies such as Mr. Bean. Situation comedies such as Friends also seemed to be particularly successful,” he added.
In order to measure (测量) endorphin levels, the researchers put a bag of ice on the volunteers’ arms to see how long they could withstand them. They found that the greater the increase in pain thresholds, the greater the amount of endorphins produced.
The purpose of Prof Dunbar’s study was not to develop a new treatment. Instead, it was to study the role of laughter in the forming of human societies two million years ago.
“The next stage will be to see whether laughing really allows people to keep together and work as a group better and be more friendly towards each other. If that is the case, then it may explain why some two million years ago, the first humans were able to form large communities of up to 100,” Dunbar added.
12 Prof Dunbar’s study was to __________.
A. test the pain thresholds of humans
B. measure the endorphin levels while laughing
C. develop a new kind of medicine that reduces pain
D. explore the influence of laughter in forming human societies
13. In order to withstand more pain, we’d better _________ .
A. watch some scary films B. watch some beautiful pictures
C. watch some boring programs D. watch some comedy videos
14. The meaning of the underlined word “release” in the passage may be ________.
A. look out B. stand out C. find out D. give out
15. What can we know from the last paragraph?
A. More experiments about laughter will be carried out.
B. Laughter makes people keep together and work as a group.
C. People who laugh a lot are more friendly towards each other.
D. The first humans could only form small communities less than 100.
D 13. D 14. D 15. A
根据倒数第二段中的“The purpose of Prof Dunbar’s study was not to develop a new treatment. Instead, it was to study the role of laughter in the forming of human societies two million years ago.(邓巴教授研究的目的不是开发一种新的治疗方法。相反,它是为了研究200万年前笑声在人类社会形成中的作用。)”可知,Dunbar教授研究的目的是研究笑声在人类历史社会形成中的作用。故选D项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“Through this experiment, the researchers found that those who had recently experienced belly laughs were able to withstand (忍受) up to 10% more pain than they had done before watching the videos.(通过这个实验,研究人员发现,那些最近经历过捧腹大笑的人比看视频之前多承受了10%的痛苦。)”可知,那些捧腹大笑的人比看视频前多承受10%的疼痛,结合“To their surprise, the scientists also found that the other group was less able to withstand pain after watching 15 minutes of the “boring” programs.(令他们惊讶的是,科学家们还发现,另一组人在看了15分钟的“无聊”节目后,忍受疼痛的能力下降了。) ”可知,研究同时发现,那些看了“节目”的人承受疼痛的能力下降了,由此可知,我们要想多承受疼痛,应该看一些喜剧视频。故选D项。
【14题详解】
词义猜测题。根据划线单词后的“chemicals called endorphins (安多芬) into the body which make us feel less painful.(一种叫做安多芬的化学物质进入体内,使我们感觉不那么痛苦。)”
根据尾段中的“The next stage will be to see whether laughing really allows people to keep together and work as a group better and be more friendly towards each other.(下一个阶段将是看看笑是否真的能让人们团结在一起,更好地作为一个团队工作,彼此之间更友好。)” 故选A项。

7 Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A Letter Full of Love B. A Traditional New Year Game
C. A Family Custom at New Year D.

A. look out B. stand out C. find out D. give out
