Chen Yuanchun is a teacher at a rural (乡村的) primary school in Cangyuan, Yunnan Province. The 44-year-old woman teaches Chinese, but she is very interested in computer technology. She has introduced coding (编程) to her students as an important information technology skill.
Chen’s connection to coding began in November 2018. She became one of the first teachers in Cangyuan to take training courses on coding. The training was challenging for a beginner like Chen. She needed to learn how to tell a machine to perform actions and finish tasks (任务) through different orders. She worked very hard because she believed this skill would be useful for her students.
After the training, Chen started a new group in her school to teach the students coding, but some parents opposed her plan. They didn’t understand what coding was and thought Chen was teaching their children to play video games on the computer.
So, Chen could only teach students of her own class at first. For teens, coding does not include writing difficult coding languages. Instead, Chen taught them how to create interesting animations (动画片) and games.
After only one term, every student was able to create something through coding. Learning coding also helped them become more creative and improved their problem-solving skills.

It was a dark and stormy night. It was New Year’s Eve. We were having our party and had a house full of people just starting to celebrate.
Suddenly, we heard loud explosions (爆炸声). Looking outside and up into the hills, we saw sparks (火花) flying from electrical transformers (变压器). Then our house went dark. I tried to find every candle we had and lit them. The candles made everything look lovely. But we had problems. We had fifteen people standing around and we still had to cook dinner. How would we do that without electricity?
The barbecue! Why not cook on the barbecue? We boys and men went outside, some holding flashlights and others cooking. We did a wonderful job. The girls and women stayed inside and got the salads ready. Everything was delicious. There were still a few hours to go before the begınning of the new year, so we all sat around the dining room table and sang up until a few minutes before midnight. Traditional festivals play an important role in Chinese culture. I’d like to introduce my favorite traditional festival—the Chinese Spring Festival to you. It is believed that the Chinese Spring Festival is the most important festival in our country. It is celebrated on the first day of the lunar year.
During the Spring Festival in 2023 I put on new clothes and visited many relatives. I was excited to receive lucky money from elders. In the evening, our big family got together to enjoy jiaozi and other delicious food. After dinner, we watched the Spring Festival gala, with such fantastic programs that I still remember them vividly.
Now, it’s October. I’m looking forward to this year’s Spring Festival. I’m sure I will have a good time then.
