Should cars be allowed in the city? City centers are busy places. This means we need to do all we can to feel safe there.
As the number of cars increases, so does the number of health problems. The number of people with asthma (哮喘) has gone up by 40% in the past ten years. Overweight has also increased because people are not getting enough exercise. They drive instead of walking wherever they go.
Cars bring air pollution and stupid accidents. If cars are so detrimental, then why not keep them away from these crowded areas? We can try walking, which doesn’t kill anyone, or even a cheap bus ride. It’s better than risking death every time we get into the city.
Many busy cities around the world have introduced park-and-ride programs. Cars park outside of the city and regular buses take people into the city center. This helps the city to become as car-free as possible. The city of Cambridge in England has been using such a program for many years.
Fred Holden is a traffic policeman in London. According to him, there are 200 needless, terrible road accidents in city centers every day. Something must change.
Holden is right. Asthma, overweight, injuries (伤) and deaths tell us that people and cars just do not mix. Our government needs to keep cars from entering city centers!

Camp George, a summer camp in Canada, was started in 1999. Since then it has provided campers with a place to build lifelong friendships.
Seven years ago, when I first got on the camp bus of Camp George, I didn’t know anyone. People soon started introducing themselves to me and I felt welcomed right away. It wasn’t long before I introduced my best friend to Camp George. My best friend and I were close before camp but camp brought us even closer.
My camp friends are so special. Everyone is included and always welcome into our friend circle. We share funny jokes and create good memories that we will hold onto forever. Not only do I have a strong friendship with the girls in my camp, but I also get along well with the trip organizers. The close relationship that we build in the summer lasts forever.
I see my camp friends a lot during the year even though we don’t go to the same school. We understand each other and never get sick of each other. On our camp group chats we count down the days till we step back on the camp bus for a new camp year.
Camp is my home away from home and one of the main reasons I am coming back to camp for my seventh summer is my friendship with my best friends. There is no fighting at Camp George and if you ever feel sad about something, all of the girls will comfort you in the nicest ways. These girls are my sisters and I don’t know what I would do without them.

46. Why does the writer talk about many illnesses in Paragraph 2?
A. To show the harm of cars. B. To show the importance of health.
C. To ask for advice on these illnesses. D. To discuss how to avoid health problems.
47 The underlined word “detrimental” has the closest meaning to “________”.
A. important B. useless C. noisy D. harmful

A. People don’t use cars at all. B. People take buses to city centers.
C. People try not to visit city centers. D. People park their cars in city centers.
49 What does Fred Holden mean?
A. Cars are changing greatly. B. Cars cause many accidents.
C. City centers are much too busy. D. He hates to deal with accidents.
