I grew up in a poor family. This was something I did not realize until I was older. I thought everyone in the city took the bus, because everyone in my neighborhood took the bus. I thought everyone in the city used the food bank, because all my friends’ cupboards were filled with the same government-labeled food that filled my cupboards. We all wore hand-me-down clothes.
Grocery shopping was my first experience understanding that my family was a little different. My mom used paper money that looked different from the paper money others in line were using. I asked my mom why our money looked different. She said that we used food stamps that were helped by the government so we could eat.
In high school, I was still embarrassed and wished we were not so poor, but I loved my mom and the other members of my family and knew we had things to be proud of. My mother taught me how to love and told me to believe in myself. Growing up in poverty taught me perseverance (毅力). I have always believed in myself and my abilities. I knew I could focus on school and build a life that looked different from my childhood.
As I became a man, I started understanding how my experiences enabled me to be resilient (有韧性的), and how to respect people for who they are as an individual—and not by what they have. I think there are a lot of fixed images placed on those experiencing poverty that do not actually come from the people experiencing it. These judgments come from people on the outside trying not to look into the experience. Hardworking , trustworthy, reliable, clean, efficient, successful and disciplined are all words not typically associated with poverty. But those words are very much shown by those experiencing poverty. I am proud to be who I am and proud of where I’m from.
4. Why did the mom use different paper money in the shop?
A. To show our difference. B. To spend the extra stamps.
C. To support the government. D. To buy food without real money.
5. What can we learn about the mom from Paragraph 3?
A. She was wise. B. She was patient. C. She was single. D. She was educated.
6. What’s the author’s attitude towards to his experience?
A. Frightened. B. Annoyed. C. Grateful. D. Confused.
7. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Struggling With Being Poor B. Lessons From Growing Up Poor
C. Staying Poor Means Staying Foolish D. My Childhood Memories

Do you use the weekends to catch up on sleep? If so, you may want to rethink that. Since the 1990s, scientists have understood that lacking sleep can harm people’s health. The changes it causes can lead to obesity and diabetes. Yet in a recent survey, a little more than one in every three U. S. adults reported sleeping fewer than the recommended seven hours a night.
Weekends may seem like a great time to catch up on sleep. Scientists, however, weren’t sure that would work. So Christopher Diner, a sleep physiologist at the University of Colorado and his colleagues decided to test it out.
The team looked at three groups of people in their mid-20s. For roughly two weeks, each group followed a set sleep schedule. One group slept about eight hours every night. Another group only got about five hours of shuteye a night. The third group slept some five hours each weeknight, but could sleep whenever and however much they wanted over the weekend.
The groups with less sleep snacked more at night, gained more weight, and saw their insulin (胰岛素) sensitivity drop compared to the group getting nine hours a night, said the study. The group that received two days to catch up on sleep saw some small improvements that were lost once they returned to a shorter sleep schedule. People in the study who got too little sleep every night gained weight. So did the weekend sleep-in crowd.
“In the end, we didn’t see any benefit in any metabolic (新陈代谢的) outcome in the people who got to sleep in on the weekend,” Chris Depner, an assistant research professor of the study said in a statement. In some cases, insulin sensitivity among members of the group with the weekend to catch up declined more than those who consistently slept five hours a night, said the study.
8. Why did Diner and his team conduct the study?
A. To assist doctors’ work. B. To finish an assignment.
C. To prove their assumption. D. To remove their doubt.
9. How did the researchers carry out the test?
A. By using a questionnaire. B. By comparing three sleep patterns.
C. By tracking one group for two weeks. D. By making cause-and-effect analyses.
10. What do we know about catching up on sleep according to the study?
A. It requires further study. B. It makes no difference to health.
C. It may lead to a regular sleep pattern. D. It may bring more harm than benefits.
11. What may the following paragraph probably focus on?
A. Ways of catching up on sleep. B. Benefits of exercise for sleep.
C. Suggestions on healthy sleep. D. Disorders from lacking sleep.

Chinese food is well received by the world. Who doesn’t long for a favorite Chinese dish? But there is one interesting concept concerning Chinese food which is almost unheard of in the West, and which is becoming increasingly ignored by the youth of the East — the ancient custom of “tonic (滋补) food”.
Tonic food is food which is consumed to improve one’s well-being or avoid sickness. For instance, it was once the custom for new mothers to eat a sesame oil (麻油) hot pot every day for the first month after giving birth. It was believed that this dish would benefit the muscles, reduce pain, improve circulation, stimulate sweating, and warm the body. Some foods, such as goat meat and spinach, are seen as “hot”, while others, such as Chinese cabbage and radishes, are seen as “cold”. One should be careful not to eat too much of either “hot” or “cold” food. However, how much “hot” or “cold” food one should eat depends on the time of the year, how the food is prepared and what it is prepared with, and the individual’s health.
The custom of employing tonic food for a healthier life also influences the catering industry. Chinese herbal medicines, such as wolfberry (枸杞), can be found on many a restaurant menu, either added to fruit tea or as a beneficial addition to a dish. These herbs attract customers, such as overworked office staff, in need of a modest pick-me-up.
So, whether you need to boost your strength with a large helping of chicken soup, or increase your mental powers with a serving of fish soup, you may find that this ancient Chinese custom could be just the tonic you were looking for.
12. What is the present situation of tonic food?
A. It is catching less attention. B. It is enjoyed by many young people.
C. It is well-known worldwide. D. It is becoming increasingly popular.
13. What is believed to benefit new mothers?
A. Chinese cabbage. B. Fruit tea.
C. Fish soup. D. Sesame oil hot pot.
14. Which of the following best explains “catering” underlined in Paragraph 3?
A. Medicine. B. Restaurant.
C. Manufacture. D. Agriculture.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Charm of Chinese Cuisine
B. The Popularity of Tonic Food
C. An Introduction of Chinese Tonic Food
D. Differences Between Hot Food and Cold Food

Emma ate her lunch and then ran into her room to get her shoes. The problem was that she could only find one of them. She looked under her bed, but all she could see were dirty towels and pants. She moved some of her toys out of the way, but still couldn’t find her shoe. After she’d checked everywhere in her room, she ran into the kitchen. “Mom, I can’t find my shoe. Will you wait while I look for it?” she asked.
Her mom thought about how many times she’d told Emma to clean her room up. She whispered something to Emma’s grandma and then said to Emma, “You will have to stay at home. Your dad and I will take Ryan to the zoo. Grandma will stay here with you.”
“No! Please wait for me. I want to go to the zoo,” Emma cried. “I’m sorry, Emma. I’ve told you a dozen times to clean your room and you ignored me. You can’t find your shoe now. It’s your own fault for not doing as I asked. You will stay at home.”
Emma ran into her bedroom, crying. Her mom came to the door and said, “Emma, clean that room of yours before I get home. I’ve told grandma not to give you any sweets until you finish the work.” She went out to the car with Ryan and Emma’s dad and then they drove away.
Paragraph 1:

【答案】4. D 5. A 6. C 7. B

【答案】8. D 9. B 10. D 11. C

【答案】12. A 13. D 14. B 15. C
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了中国传统滋补品的现状,功效以及滋补品对现代餐饮业的影响。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中“But there is one interesting concept concerning Chinese food which is almost unheard of in the West, and which is becoming increasingly ignored by the youth of the East — the ancient custom of “tonic (滋补) food”.(但关于中餐,有一个有趣的概念在西方几乎闻所未闻,而东方的年轻人也越来越忽视它——那就是“滋补”的古老习俗)”可知,滋补食品它引起的关注越来越少。故选A项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“For instance, it was once the custom for new mothers to eat a sesame oil (麻油) hot pot every day for the first month after giving birth. It was believed that this dish would benefit the muscles, reduce pain, improve circulation, stimulate sweating, and warm the body.(例如,新妈妈在产后的第一个月里每天吃麻油火锅曾经是一种习俗。人们相信这道菜对肌肉有益,减轻疼痛,促进血液循环,刺激出汗,温暖身体)”可知,人们认为麻油火锅对新妈妈有好处。故选D项。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中“Chinese herbal medicines, such as wolfberry(枸杞), can be found on many a restaurant menu, either added to fruit tea or as a beneficial addition to a dish. These herbs attract customers, such as overworked office staff, in need of a modest pick-me-up.(在许多餐馆的菜单上都可以找到枸杞等中草药,它们要么被添加到果茶中,要么被作为有益的添加剂添加到菜肴中。这些草药吸引了顾客,比如工作过度的办公室职员,他们需要适度的提神)”可知,此处为使用滋补食品以健康生活的习俗也影响了餐饮业。故可猜测划线单词catering为“餐饮”的意思,结合选项B项Restaurant“餐饮,餐厅”意思一致。故选B项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章大意以及第一段中“But there is one interesting concept concerning Chinese food which is almost unheard of in the West, and which is becoming increasingly ignored by the youth of the East — the ancient custom of “tonic (滋补) food”.(但关于中餐,有一个有趣的概念在西方几乎闻所未闻,而东方的年轻人也越来越忽视它——那就是“滋补”的古老习俗)”可知,文章主要介绍了正日益被东方年轻人说忽视的中国的补品。由此可知,文章最适合的标题是“中国滋补食品简介”。故选C项。

During lunchtime, Emma suggested going to the 200 to feed the animals and her mom agreed.
“We’ll stop by the bakery and pick some bread up. Now hurry and eat and then we'll go. It’s going to be a lovely day. Grandma is coming with us. She'll be here any minute,” Mom said.
Emma sat on her bed and cried for a long time.
Paragraph 2:
Emma and her grandma were sitting at the table, eating when her mom, dad, and Ryan came home.
【答案】Paragraph 1:
Emma sat on her bed and cried for a long time. And then she wiped her eyes and started to clean her room. It took her two hours to clean up the room. “I did it!” she said proudly. She even found her missing shoe. She ran into the living room. “Grandma! Come and see. I cleaned my room and found my shoe.” Grandma looked at Emma’s room. “If you had kept it this way, you wouldn’t have lost your shoe. Come and have some sweets now,” she said.
Paragraph 2:
Emma and her grandma were sitting at the table, eating when her mom, dad, and Ryan came home. “Well, look at Emma’s room! It’s clean,” her dad said. “How was the zoo? Did you have fun? I wish I could have gone there with you,” Emma said. “If you keep your room clean, we may go and see animals again,” her mom said. From then on, Emma tried her best to keep her room clean.
