Part III Reading and Writing A. Choose the best answer.10% The French word renaissance means rebirth. It was first used in 1855 by the historian Jules Michelet in his History of France, then adopted by historians of culture, by art historians, and eventually by music historians, all of whom applied it to European culture during the 150 years spanning 1450-1600. The concept of rebirth was appropriate to this period of European history because of the renewed interest in ancient Greek and Roman culture that began in Italy and then spread throughout Europe. Scholars and artists of this period wanted to restore the learning and ideals of the classical civilizations of Greece and Rome. To these scholars this meant a return to human. Fulfillment in life became a desirable goal, and expressing the entire range of human emotions and enjoying the pleasures of the senses were no longer frowned on. Artists and writers now turned to religious subject matter and sought to make their works understandable and appealing. These changes in outlook deeply affected the musical culture of the Renaissance period(文艺复兴时期)-- how people thought about music as well as the way music was composed and experienced. They could see the architectural monuments, sculptures, plays, and poems that were being rediscovered, but they could not actually hear ancient music --- although they could read the writings of classical philosophers, poets, essayists, and music theorists that were becoming available in translation. They learned about the power of ancient music to move the listener and wondered why modern music did not have the same effect. For example, the influential religious leader Bernardino Cirillo expressed disappointment with the learned music of his time. He urged musicians to follow the example of the sculptors, painters, architects, and scholars who had rediscovered ancient art and literature. The musical Renaissance in Europe was more a general cultural movement and state of mind than a specific set of musical techniques. Furthermore, music changed so rapidly during this century and a half-though at different rates in different countries---that we cannot define a single Renaissance style. 85. What does the author mean by using the word “eventually” in line 3? A) That music historians used the term “Renaissance” after the other historians did B) That most music historians used the term “Renaissance” C) The term “Renaissance” became widely used by art historians but not by music historians D) That music historians used the term “Renaissance” very differently than it had been used by Jules Michelet 86. The phrase "frowned on" in line 9 is closest in meaning to A) given up B) forgotten about C) argued about D) disapproved of 87. It can be inferred from the passage that thinkers of the Renaissance were seeking a rebirth of A) communication among artists across Europe B) spirituality in everyday life C) a cultural emphasis on human values D) religious themes in art that would accompany the traditional secular themes 88. According to the passage, why was Bemardino Cirillo disappointed with the music of his time? A) It was not complex(复杂的) enough to appeal to musicians. B) It had little emotional impact on audiences. C) It was too dependent on the art and literature of his time. D) It did not contain enough religious themes. 89. Which of the following is mentioned in the passage as a reason for the absence of a single Renaissance musical style? A) The musical Renaissance was defined by technique rather than style. B) The musical Renaissance was too short to give rise to a new musical style. C) Renaissance musicians adopted the styles of both Greek and Roman musicians. D) During the Renaissance, music never remained the same for very long B. Choose the words or expressions and complete the passage. 16% In American history, today’s grandparents used to grow up in a period of angry rebelling(反叛) against their parents’ authority(权威). As time goes by and they ease into the role of senior family members, they may wonder: What happened to the generation gap? Is it gone or just in the ___90___? Or is it still present but mostly underground? A generation gap is commonly recognized to refer to differences between generations that cause conflict(冲突) and complicated communication, creating a ‘gap’. Sociologist William Safire provides a more positive definition. Generation gap, according to him, can be an upsetting lack of communication between young and old, which results in misunderstanding, or, on the good side, it can be regarded as a useful stretch of time that separates cultures within a society, allowing them to develop their own ___91___. From their position in the family, and with more experience than younger family members, grandparents are more likely to look at the generation gap ___92___, expecting that differences between generations can sometimes do some good to all those concerned. Although there have always been differences between the generations, the drastic(强烈的) differences that the term implies were not much ___93___ until the twentieth century. Before that time, society was not very mobile. Young people typically lived near their extended families, prayed in their childhood churches and often worked on the family farm or in a family business. ___94___ the appearance of television and movies, young people were exposed to cultural influences foreign to their own families and cultures. Performers like Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley and James Dean won admiration from the younger generation but were often disliked by the older generation. Then, to make the matter worse, came the 1960s, and the Vietnam(越南)War ___95___ a more serious conflict between young and old. Today, although more Americans have admitted the existence of generational differences, most do not see them as too ___96___. That is partly because of the areas of difference. The top areas of disagreement between young and old, according to a research, are use of technology and taste in music rather than serious issues like religious beliefs or political viewpoints. In fact, most American people today have found ways to, on the one hand, live in harmony with family members and, on the other hand, ___97___ their own tastes and preferences. 90. Answer the questions. 12% One day when I was 12, my mother gave me an order: I was to walk to the public library, and borrow at least one book for the summer. This was one more weapon for her to defeat my strange problem — inability to read.  In the library, I found my way into the “Children’s Room.” I sat down on the floor and pulled a few books off the shelf at random. The cover of a book caught my eye. It presented a picture of a beagle(猎兔犬). I had recently had a beagle, the first and only animal companion I ever had as a child. He was my secret sharer, but one morning, he was gone, given away to someone who had the space and the money to care for him. I never forgot my beagle. There on the book’s cover was a beagle which looked similar to my dog. I ran my fingers over the picture of the dog on the cover. My eyes ran across the title, Amos, the Beagle with a Plan. Unknowingly, I had read the title. Without opening the book, I borrowed it from the library for the summer. Under the shade of a bush, I started to read about Amos. I read very, very slowly with difficulty. Though pages were turned slowly, I got the main idea of the story about a dog who, like mine, had been separated from his family and who finally found his way back home. That dog was my dog, and I was the little boy in the book. At the end of the story, my mind continued the final scene of reunion, on and on, until my own lost dog and I were, in my mind, running together. My mother’s call returned me to the real world. I suddenly realized something: I had read a book, and I had loved reading that book. Everyone knew I could not read. But I had read it. Books could be incredibly wonderful and I was going to read them. I never told my mother about my “miraculous” (奇迹般地) experience that summer, but she saw a slow but remarkable improvement in my classroom performance during the next year. And years later, she was proud that her son had read thousands of books, was awarded a PhD in literature, and authored his own books, articles, poetry and fiction. The power of the words has held. 106.When did the author receive the order from his mother? 107.Who was his secret sharer? 108.The author didn’t open the book before he borrowed it home, did he? 109.
