Passage1. What is a family? Why does it matter? What does it teach us that we can’t learn on our own? These questions seem especially relevant in the holiday season when it is often our tradition to gather as families and celebrate together.
My mother was one of twelve children. As they grew up, married and had children of their own, most of them lived near enough to gather for holidays at my grandparents’ home in a small town in the mountain s of North Carolina.
I don’t recall getting many gifts from them. I remember the sense of belonging, of being part of something that assured me I was loved and not alone. I delighted in the laughing, playing and fighting with my crazy cousins. I watched my granddad and uncles sit on the porch (门廊), rain or shine, smoking and joking, arguing about politics and trying to solve the problems of the world. I listened to grandmother, mother and aunts stir pots on the stove and talk about their lives, hopes, dreams and disappointments, and gossip about any sister who failed to show up. The food was always plentiful and delicious - country ham, sweet potatoes, green beans, biscuits and my grandmother’s banana pudding. But for me, the food was never the highlight. The highlight was simply being together. A family.
However, they’re all gone now. My parents and grandparents, my aunts and uncles have left this world for the next. My cousins are scattered (分散) here and there. And yet the memories linger, along with the love that we shared. I treasure those memories and the things they taught me. They told me that families aren’t perfect, but they prepare us to find our way in an imperfect world. They made me realize that all families are crazy in their own peculiar (独特的) ways.
My husband and I are growing a new family while keeping close to the surviving members of the families. It’s a beautiful blend (混合) of kindness, traditions, nurturing (养育) and friendships, which grows year after year.
I hope this holiday season will fill you with lovely memories of the family that raised you, and surround you with all the people who mean “family” to you now.

Passage2. From Hawaii to Bali and the ski- slopes of Perisher, 26-year-old Jimmy Antram has “seen” plenty of the world. But it has all been from the vantage point (制高点) of his mother’s back. Fulfilling a promise she made to herself to give her disabled son the best life she possibly could, Niki Antram has spent years travelling the globe with Jimmy clinging (紧贴) to her shoulders.
Jimmy was born with physical and mental disabilities, including blindness, and requires round-the-clock care from Ms Antram. He has a wheelchair, but Ms Antram has never enjoyed using it. She’s content to carry him while she’s physically able and helps him walk short distances on his own. Incredible photographs taken around the globe show him clinging on as they hike through mountains and rain forests.
Ms Antram makes a detailed plan and calls ahead for every place she wants to visit — whether it be a restaurant or hotel. “Even if I know we will be okay, I like to inform the companies to make sure they understand and are okay with having us there,” she says.
She counts herself lucky that they have similar interests. They both enjoy the outdoors, the water and adventures. “From Hawaii to Bali I’d be staying out all night with Jimmy because he was a party animal like me at the time,” she says. “I will find ways with Jimmy to get him the best and most adventurous life.”
When they’re not travelling, they wake up in the morning and go for a bike ride — Jimmy in the trailer while his mother peddles for them both — as the sun rises. The pair smile and wave as they pass their neighbors. People who were once strangers have come to know and love Jimmy, and admire Ms Antram. Before their early outing, she’s already made breakfast, fed Jimmy and dressed him for the day. Her schedule is exhausting, but she’s determined to give Jimmy the best life she can provide.
Ms Antram says her heart “broke” the day she learned her son was permanently blind and it took a long time to overcome those feelings of hurt.“ Being a mom, I didn’t get that carefree life that most moms get,” she says. “I had responsibility.”

Passage3. Raised in a fatherless home, my father was extremely tightfisted towards us children. His attitude didn’t soften as I grew into adulthood and drifted away to college. I had to ride the bus whenever I came home. Though the bus stopped about two miles from home, Dad never met me, even in cold weather. If I grumbled (嘟囔), he’d say in his loudest father voice, “That’s what your legs are for!”
The walk didn’t bother me as much as the fear of walking alone along the highway and country roads. I also felt less than valued that my father didn’t seem concerned about my safety. That feeling was canceled one spring evening.
It had been a particularly difficult week at college after long hours in labs. I longed for home. When the bus reached a stop, I stepped off and dragged my suitcase to begin the long journey home.
A row of hedge (篱笆) edged the driveway that climbed the hill to our house. Once I had turned off the highway to start the last lap of my journey, I was always relieved to see the hedge because it meant that I was almost home. On that particular evening, the hedge had just come into view when I saw something gray moving along the top of the hedge, moving toward the house. Upon closer observation, I realized it was the top of my father’s head. Then I knew, each time I’d come home, he had stood behind the hedge, watching, until he knew I had arrived safely. I swallowed hard against the threatening tears. He did care, after all.
On later visits, that spot of gray became my watchtower. I could hardly wait until I was close enough to watch for its secret movement above the greenery. Upon reaching home, I would find my father sitting innocently in his chair. “So! My son, it’s you!” he’d say, his face lengthening into pretended surprise.
I replied, “Yes, Dad, it’s me. I’m home.”

Could you help me talk with her?” I looked at her for a moment. I wondered how I should help her. Suddenly an idea came to me.
I took two baskets from the living room and said, “My dear, when everyone is born, he or she has a little basket. This little basket is yours and the big one is mine. You can see your little basket is inside mine. When you were born, there were many things in it. I put the things in my basket because you were too young. As you grew older and began to do something by yourself, I placed a few things back in your basket. When you learned to dress yourself, the things began to go into your basket.”
“I can dress myself,” Ann said in a low voice.
“Right. As you grow up, you must do more and more things by yourself,” I said to her with a smile. Then I took her basket out of mine and handed it to her. “You will finally carry your own basket and go on with your life.”

Passage5. Mothers whose parents help out with child care are more likely to show their children parental warmth than mothers who do not receive any support, according to a study led by Nanyang Technological University, Singapore(NTU Singapore)and published in a journal.
According to the NTU Singapore-led study, which analyzed data from 615 mother-child pairs in the Growing Up in Singapore Towards healthy Out comes(GUSTO)study, mothers of children aged 4 and a half said they used less frequent authoritarian (专制的) parenting styled when the child’s maternal grandparents stepped in to help. When their children were 6, mothers who had been supported by their own parents also reported using more positive parenting styled, which is characterized by warmth, responsiveness, and a friendly home environment. Interestingly, the study did not find evidence to support a connection between support from other types of care giving arrangements — paternal grandparents, both maternal and paternal grandparents, or domestic helpers — and the above-mentioned positive parenting approaches in mothers.
Associate Professor Set oh, who is also the Director of NTU’s Early Cognition Lab, said, “While maternal grandparents, paternal grandparents, and domestic helpers may all provide instrumental assistance and emotional encouragement when it comes to child care duties, our study found that child care support from maternal grandparents was the most beneficial.” This finding supports the idea introduced in earlier research that maternal grandparents are in a unique position to provide support in a manner most aligned with the needs of mothers, possibly due to shared valued and easiness of communication.
While the study was done in Singapore, the research team said the findings that tell maternal grand parental support from paternal grand parental support could be relevant across Asian countries, where grand parental involvement in child care is considered a cultural expectation. The research team added that it would also be interesting and meaningful to examine whether the benefits of maternal grand parenting reach adolescence and early adult hood to influence the family’s life tracks.

As we walked around, we entered a store with beautiful clothes. The fabrics (面料) felt soft, and the designs were fashionable. My mun’s eyes lit up when she saw a lovely sweater. “This would look great on you,” she said with a smile.
I checked the price and was shocked, It was much too expensive for us. I knew my mum worked hard to make ends meet. Every penny was made use of in our life. Yet, here she was, willing to spend on a sweater for me.
Looking at her, I realised something. My mum might not have the beautiful clothes or the latest accessories (配饰), but she had a heart of gold. She always put me first, even if it meant giving up her own wants.
Suddenly, I felt a wave of warmth. I hugged her and said to her softly, “Mum, I don’t need the sweater. I just need you.” She smiled, “I know, dear. But it’s nice to have dreams sometimes, right?” We left the store, hand in hand, feeling wealthier than ever.

1.细节理解题。根据第二段中“As they grew up, married and had children of their own, most of them lived near enough to gather for holidays at my grandparents’ home in a small town in the mountains of North Carolina. (他们长大后,结婚生子,大多数人住得足够近,可以在北卡罗来纳州山区一个小镇的祖父母家聚会过节。)”可知,作者的大家庭通常在祖父母家聚会过节。故选C项。
2.推理判断题。文章第一段提出关于家庭的问题,接着通过作者对自己家庭经历的描述,强调了家庭的重要性和团聚的温馨。最后一段“I hope this holiday season will fill you with lovely memories of the family that raised you, and surround you with all the people who mean ‘family’ to you now.

I’m home.”

1.What do we know about the mothers of children aged four and a half?
A.They used less controlling parenting styled with the aid of their mothers.
B.They received financial support from their mothers.
C.They expected to work in senior positions.
D.They did some housework alone regularly.
2.How many kinds of assistance in caring for children were mentioned according to the text?
A.Two. B.Three. C.Four. D.Five.
3.What does the underlined phrase “maligned with” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Dealt with. B.Agreed with. C.Started with. D.Varied with.
4.What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A.The future arrangements of the study. B.The social meaning of high-quality child care.
C.The significance of the study in other situations. D.The details of grand parental involvement in child care.
【答案】1.A 2.C 3.B 4.C

故选A项

4.主旨大意题。由文章最后一段“While the study was done in Singapore, the research team said the findings that tell maternal grand parental support from paternal grand parental support could be relevant across Asian countries, where grand parental involvement in child care is considered a cultural expectation. The research team added that it would also be interesting and meaningful to examine whether the benefits of maternal grand parenting reach adolescence and early adult hood to influence the family’s life tracks.(虽然这项研究是在新加坡进行的,但研究小组表示,研究结果表明,祖父母对母亲的支持和祖父母对父亲的支持可能在亚洲国家都是相关的,在这些国家,祖父母参与儿童保育被认为是一种文化期望。研究小组补充说,研究母亲祖父母的好处是否会影响青春期和成年早期,从而影响家庭的生活轨迹,这也是有趣和有意义的。)”可知,该段主要概括了这项研究在其他国家和地区的意义。故选C项。

My mum, on the other hand, wore a simple dress and old shoes. Her clothes looked worn out compared to the others. As we walked past store windows. I couldn’t help but notice the difference, I saw young girls in bright dresses and boys in tidy shirts. They looked so modern and confident.
Feeling a bit out of place, I tried to pull my mum towards less busy areas. I didn’t want anyone to notice us or, more specifically, notice her. It wasn’t because I wasn’t proud of my mum. I just felt she deserved (值得) better.
