New Jersey school bus driver Herman Cruse noticed that a kindergartner seemed a little sad one morning.
When Cruse asked him what was wrong, the boy named Kingsly explained that he wasn’t able to complete his reading assignment because his parents were busy with his four siblings (兄弟姐妹) at home. It was hard to find one-on-one time to practice reading with his mom or dad.
An idea popped into Cruse’s mind. He received permission from the 6-year-old boy’s teacher, Alex Bakley, to show up at her kindergarten classroom the following week. When he walked in, Kingsly shouted, “Hey, that’s my bus driver!”
“We went into a quiet corner and began reading together,” Cruse said. “He read to me, and I read to him. We read together, and from there, it took on a life of its own. A second student wanted to read to me, then a third.”
Now Cruse volunteers to help Bakley’s 18 kindergarten students with reading two days a week, and on a third day, he tutors the school’s first- and second-graders.
“I have never wanted to be anything other than a bus driver. Because I live 40 miles away, it doesn’t make sense for me to drive home after delivering students. Instead, I’d hang out at the gym, go to the library or sit in my car and go to sleep to fill up the time,” Cruse said. It wasn’t until he offered to help the kindergartner on his bus last year that he realized there was something more rewarding he could be doing.
Kingsly has been more excited about books since he started reading with Cruse. “Kingsly had a rough time with reading at the beginning of the school year, but he’s doing much better because of this fun one-on-one time,” Bakley said.
What started out as a way to kill time has now blossomed into a way to make a difference in the hearts of children.
24. Why was Kingsly sad?
A. He didn’t get along with his siblings.
B. He couldn’t spend enough time reading.
C. He had trouble with his reading task.
D. He forgot to do the reading assignment.
25. What did Cruse do to help Kingsly?
A. He read together with him. B. He worked as a class assistant.
C. He organized a reading group. D. He found a quiet reading place.
26. What can we know about Kingsly?
A. He has become more active.
B. He has gained a sense of achievement.
C. He has formed the best reading habit.
D. He has improved his reading ability.
27. Which best describes Cruse’s volunteering experience?
A. Demanding. B. Meaningful. C. Eventful. D. Boring.

There is an old Chinese proverb that states “One generation plants the trees; another gets the shade,” and this is how it should be with mothers and daughters. The relationship between a mother and a daughter is sometimes confusing. The relationship can be similar to friendship. However, the mother and daughter relationship has unique characteristics that distinguish it from a friendship. These characteristics include responsibilities and unconditional love, which preclude mothers and daughters from being best friends.
Marina, 27 years old, said, “I love spending time with my mom, but I wouldn’t consider her my best friend. Best friends don’t pay for your wedding. Best friends don’t remind you how they carried you in their body and gave you life! Best friends don’t tell you how wise they are because they have been alive at least 20 years longer than you.” This doesn’t mean that the mother and daughter relationship can’t be very close and satisfying. This generation of mothers and adult daughters has a lot in common, which increases the likelihood of shared companionship. Mothers and daughters have always shared the common experience of being homemakers, responsible for maintaining(保持) and passing on family values and traditions. Today contemporary mothers and daughters also share the experience of work and technology, which may bring them even closer together.
Best friends may or may not continue to be best friends, but for better or worse; the mother and daughter relationship is permanent, even if for some unfortunate reason they aren’t speaking. Sometimes this is not an equal relationship. Daughters don’t always feel responsible for their mother’s emotional well-being. But mothers never stop being mothers, which includes frequently wanting to protect their daughters and often feeling responsible for their happiness. The mother and daughter relationship is a relationship that is not replaceable by any other. Mothers always “trump(胜过)” friends.
28. What does the underlined word “preclude” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. differ. B. benefit. C. prevent. D. change.
29. What can we learn from what Marina said?
A. Best friends will not spend money on her wedding.
B. Best friends will not remind her of important issues in life.
C. Her mother is wiser on account of her age.
D. Her mother is definitely not her best friend.
30. Why can a mother and a daughter build a even closer relationship today?
A. Because they share advanced technology with each other.
B. Because they work together to support the whole family.
C. Because they experience the same values and traditions.
D. Because they have common experience in life and work.
31. What is the text mainly about?
A. How to build a good mother and daughter relationship.
B. A mother-daughter relationship is irreplaceable.
C Mothers want to be daughters’ friends.
D. A daughter is a mother’s best friend.
D
The idea that night owls who don’t go to bed until the early hours struggle to get anything done during the day may have to be revised. It turns out that staying up late could be good for our brain power as research suggests that people who identify as night owls could be sharper than those who go to bed early.
Researchers led by academics at Imperial College London studied data from the UK Biobank study on more than 26,000 people who had completed intelligence, reasoning, reaction time and memory tests. They then examined how participants’ sleep duration, quality, and chronotype (睡眠类型) affected brain performance. They found that those who stayed up late and those classed as “intermediate” had “superior cognitive function”, while morning risers had the lowest scores.
Going to bed late is strongly associated with creative types. Artists, authors and musicians known to be night owls include Henride Toulouse- Lautrec, James Joyce and Kanye West; But while politicians such as, Winston Churchill and Barack Obama famously seemed to thrive on little sleep, the study found that sleep duration is important for brain function, with those getting between seven and nine hours of shut-eye each night performing best in cognitive tests.
Dr Raha West, lead author and clinical research fellow at the department of surgery and cancer at Imperial College London, said: “While understanding and working with your natural sleep tendencies is essential, it’s equally important to remember to get just enough sleep, not too long or too short. This is crucial for keeping your brain healthy and functioning at its best.”
Prof Daqing Ma, the co-leader of the study who is also from Imperial’s department of surgery and cancer, added: “We found that sleep duration has a direct effect on brain function, and we believe that actively managing sleep patterns is really important for boosting, and safeguarding, the way our brains work.”
32. What do we know about night owls?
A. Night owls struggle to do things in daytime. B. Night owls don’t like sleeping.
C. Night owls may be more intelligent. D. Night owls have to stay up late.
33. What is the author’s purpose in mentioning some people in paragraph 3?
A. To show they sleep less but perform better. B. To illustrate creation is linked with late sleep.
C. To explain the importance of less sleeping. D. To identify which type of person can sleep less.
34. What will Prof Daqing Ma agree with?
A Active management of sleep patterns is significant.
B. The more we sleep, the better our brain are.
C. Our brain function directly relies on sleeping.
D. Sleep seven to nine hours a day, keep doctors away.
35. Which is the best title of the passage?
A. Sleeping pattern is essential.
B. Staying up will make us creative.
C. Night owls’ sleeping behavior “better” than early risers.
D. Night owls’ cognitive function “superior” to early risers.

My daughter Gina was in Mrs. Melton’s fourth grade class. After only a month in school, she began to come home on a regular basis asking for pencils, crayons (蜡笔), paper, etc. At first I just dutifully provided whatever she needed, never questioning her.
This went on for weeks. I became concerned and asked her, “Gina, what are you doing with your school things?” She would always respond with answers that satisfied me. One day, after supplying a brand new eraser to her only three days earlier, I became annoyed and angrily asked her once more. Knowing her excuses would no longer work, she bent her head and began to cry. I lifted her tiny chin and looked into those big brown eyes, filled now with tears. I waited impatiently for her to answer.
“Mum, there is a boy named John in my class. He doesn’t have any of the school things he needs to do his work. Other kids tease him because his papers are messy and he only has two crayons to color with. Secretly, I’ve been putting the new school things you bought me on his desk,” Gina explained with watery eyes.
My heart sank as I stood there in disbelief. She had taken on the role of an adult and tried to hide it like a child. I knelt down and hugged her to me, not wanting her to see my own tears. When I pulled myself together, I stood up and said, “Gina, I would never get mad at you for wanting to help someone, but why didn’t you just come and tell me?” I didn’t wait for her to answer.
The next day I visited Mrs. Melton and told her what Gina had said. I then learnt that John’s family had just moved here. John was the eldest of four boys and their parents were struggling to make ends meet. Getting school things for the boys was not their priority.

【原文】My name is John croft. For three years and six months, I worked as a taxi driver for downtown taxi in vancouver. I drove my cab five days a week, from three in the afternoon until around twelve at night. There were traffic jams every afternoon. But it didn’t bother me. Most passengers were nice enough, although I can’t remember most of them. I liked to show tourists our beautiful city. A lot of tourists from Asia visited vancouver in the evening. I took people out to restaurants, clubs and theatres. It was interesting to see people dressed in their best clothes for parties. The most interesting customer I had was a man dressed as a bird. I can still remember the scene clearly and I think I’ll never forget it. My cab was always clean and I always tried to be friendly. The trip to the airport was usually my biggest tip. I liked my job and made a comfortable living. However, as we know, it is really a tiring job so I don’t drive a taxi any more now. I have lots of free time but sometimes I Miss meeting new people.

C. Mothers want to be daughters’ friends.
D. A daughter is a mother’s best friend.

A. Active management of sleep patterns is significant.

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语段续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】One possible version:
With Christmas drawing near, I became increasingly concerned about John and his family. I knew that the holiday season could be particularly tough for those facing financial hardships, and I wanted to do something to help. I discussed with Gina about how we could make a difference for John and his siblings, and she was eager to contribute in any way she could. We organized a small fundraiser at a local community center, inviting neighbors and friends to donate food, drinks, school supplies and toys.
The next morning, we set out for John’s home. Armed with bags full of donated items, we knocked on the door with a mixture of nervousness and excitement. When John’s mother opened the door, her eyes widened in surprise. We explained our visit and handed over the donations, assuring her that it was a community effort. She was tearful as she thanked us, expressing how much this meant to her family. Gina beamed with pride, knowing that she had played a part in bringing joy to someone else’s Christmas. From that day on, Gina learned that sometimes, the best way to help is by working together with others, and that sharing the burden can lighten the load for everyone.
