Most people who ran the marathon last month spent days before resting up and days after recovering. But not Jacky Hunt-Broersma. In total, she ran 104 marathons in 104 days. If it’s confirmed by Guinness World Records, that would be a new world record. And she did it all with one leg and a prosthesis (假肢).
“Someone able-bodied had done it previously. I wanted to see if I could do it on a prosthetic leg and see what would happen,” she said. “I thought it would be a great way to inspire others to push their limits because I truly believe that we’re stronger than what we think. And I’ve been so pleasantly surprised that my body is held up, everything is held up and I’ve made it to 104.”
She actually did not pick up the sport until after she lost the lower part of her left leg in 2001 to a type of cancer called Ewing sarcoma. Runners using a prosthetic leg can’t use a regular one. They need a running blade (刀锋式跑步义肢). Hunt-Broersma has two but she was only able to run with one because of the swelling she experienced in her left leg that made it impossible to connect to the other blade. But even with the pain that occurred, she has been able to put up with it and continued.
All together, Hunt-Broersma ran over 4, 385 kilometers. During that time she has had a lot of time to think and has learned a few things about herself. “It has taught me how strong one can be and how important absolute determination is. If you’re mentally strong, you can do anything,” she said. “And our bodies are just amazing...This whole journey was impressive and super hard, but it’s told me how strong I can be as a person and how far I can push myself.”
24. Why did Hunt-Broersma decide to run marathons?
A. She wanted to set a new record.
B. She intended to challenge herself.
C. She was driven by her interest.
D. She was inspired by people like her.
25. What difficulty did Hunt-Broersma meet with?
A. She didn’t get professional training.
B. She found it hard to keep her balance.
C. She suffered discomfort in her left leg.
D. She couldn’t use regular running blades.
26. What message does the author express through the story?
A. Rome wasn’t built in a day.
B. Time works wonders.
C. A good beginning is half the battle.
D. Nothing is impossible to a willing heart.
27. What may be the author’s attitude towards Hunt-Broersma?

But even with the pain that occurred, she has been able to put up with it and continued.(使用假肢的跑步者不能使用普通的假肢。

It is generally assumed that one can’t have too many friends. But it seems that there is a natural limit to the number of people we stay in touch with. A study found that when we make new friends, by starting a new job or going to university, we downgrade or even drop old ones. And while the friends may change, the number stays almost the same.
Oxford University researcher Felix Reed-Tsochas asked 24 students in the final months of school to list all their friends and relatives and say how close to them they were. The pupils filled in the questionnaire (问卷) twice more after starting work or going to university. They were also given free mobile phones and agreed that researchers could use their bills to work out who they called, when and for how long.
Putting the two pieces of information together showed, unsurprisingly, that most people have a small circle of close friends, who they spend most of their time talking to. This inner circle is surrounded by group after group of ever more distant friends. As the volunteers’ lives changed, this overall pattern, including the number of best friends, remained almost the same, meaning that some close friends from childhood were dropped or downgraded as new friendships were built.
Dr Reed-Tsochas said, “Maybe my best friend is no longer the same person but the amount of time I allocate (分配) to my best friend is still the same.” He added that this finding suggests that even with the coming of modern technology we are only capable of forming a limited number of true friendships.
Chester University researcher Dr Sam Roberts said, “Our results are likely to reflect limitations in the ability of humans to keep emotionally close relationships both because of limited time and because the emotional capital (情绪资本) that individuals can allocate between family members and friends is limited.”
28. According to Paragraph 1, what is a popular belief about making friends?
A. A friend in need is a friend indeed. B. We should treat friends as our family.
C. The more friends we make, the better. D. A friend to everybody is a friend to nobody.
29. Which is a method Dr Reed-Tsochas used in his study?
A. Checking the volunteers’ call records. B. Learning about the volunteers’ hobbies.
C. Tracking the volunteers’ job performance. D. Interviewing the volunteers’ schoolmates.
30. What did the researchers find from the study?
A. One’s attitude to friendship remains the same.
B. People attach great importance to friendships.
C. People rarely drop their old friends to make new ones.
D. The number of one’s best friends doesn’t change much.
31. What is the function of the last paragraph?
A. To add background information. B. To give a possible explanation.
C To offer some suggestions. D. To introduce a new topic.
【答案】28. C 29. A 30. D 31. B

Freshman year of high school is a big transition (过渡) for any student.
Luckily, you’re not the only person going through this, and plenty of others have made the transition before you too.
One of the ways in which high school is different from middle school or junior high the most is the higher expectations. You’ll find that you’re expected to keep closer track of your own schedule and responsibilities with fewer people checking up on you. At the same time, your classes are likely to become more challenging, and you might be participating in new school activities as well.
Some students find it hard to keep up with everything at first, which is totally normal. One way to prepare in advance for these higher expectations is to make sure that you have organized schedules in place before you start high school.
Another important skill for meeting these higher expectations is building a strong support network. No matter how strong a student you are, at some point you will need some help. Keeping healthy relationships with your friends and teachers is a great way to make sure that you have people who are willing to help when you need them.
Try to get to know at least some of your teachers beyond your classroom communication. Be an active learner during class and stay after class to ask questions. Take advantage of email or class messaging systems. The better your teachers know you, the better prepared they’ll be to help when you need them.
It’s important for you to keep in mind as you start high school that no one is perfect. Transitions are hard for everyone, and starting high school is a big transition. These challenges provide a great chance to reinvent (重塑) yourself.
32. In the author’s view, the biggest difference between high school and middle school is ________.
A. different relationships B. the higher pressure
C. high academic achievement D. the higher expectations
33. Which of the following suggestion is not mentioned in the text?
A. Careful schedules. B. Healthy relationships.
C. Reinventing yourself. D. Using network information.
34. Who is the article written for?
A. Students in junior school. B. Teachers in high school.
C. Parents of high school students. D. Students in senior high school.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. How to Get Through the Transition of Freshman Year of High School
B. How to Become an Active Learner in High School
C. What to Prepare to Keep up with Everything in High School
D. How to Meet Your Teacher’s High Expectations
【答案】32. D 33. C 34. D 35. A

Hunt-Broersma has two, but she was only able to run with one because of the swelling she experienced in her left leg that made it impossible to connect to the other blade.
D She couldn’t use regular running blades.
26. What message does the author express through the story?
A. Rome wasn’t built in a day.
B. Time works wonders.
C. A good beginning is half the battle.
D. Nothing is impossible to a willing heart.
27. What may be the author’s attitude towards Hunt-Broersma?
A. Annoyed. B. Concerned

C. To offer some suggestions. D. To introduce a new topic.

Some students find it hard to keep up with everything at first which is totally normal.
