Finding a passion (热衷的爱好) is hard for anyone. And it might be even more so for a teenager. However, the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids tries to make it a little easier with their Teen Learning Academy.
About Jason Hannah
Jason Hannah is the Senior Youth Enrichment Director. He says, “We’ll go in about six different colleges and we have a ton of guest speakers coming in. We don’t push the four- year college; instead, we try to push whatever they love doing.”
About this program
Students are able to make new friends and build new connections. “They can create new relationships with students they’ve never seen before,” says Hannah. The students get to have some fun as well. They can play golf once a week through a partnership with First Tee West Michigan.
Best of all, this free experience could come with a pay. Hannah says, “We treat it like a job so you go to a job every day; you get paid. We’ re giving them some kind of incentive (激励), some money to be a part of the program as well. ”
We try to make these kids feel like they have a safe space that will feed them every day and give them some training. They will know what they really want to do for the rest of their life. Students will get ready for the upcoming year after they’ve completed the program.
If you don’t have a passion and want to know what you truly love doing this program is perhaps a good choice for you.

When I was ten, my brother and I received a wonderful gift — tennis rackets (球拍) and balls. One Saturday morning, my brother and I took our tennis rackets and balls to the school and took turns hitting our balls against the side of the two- story school building. We were hitting the ball higher and faster. Suddenly, the ball went right through one of the upstairs windows.
We looked around and nobody was in sight except an old man sitting on a porch (门廊) halfway. “What should we do?” I asked. My brother answered, “No one will know whose ball it is. No one saw us, except that old man. He probably can’t see this far. Let’s go home.” We picked up the rest of our balls and headed home.
“What happened?” Mom asked. “Well,” my brother slowly began, “we had a great time until we hit the ball too hard and too high and it went right through the school window.” My mother said loudly, “You’ll have to tell your father.”
As soon as my father walked in the house, we hurried to him and told our story. He was composed and said, “Well, today is Saturday. On Monday, I’ll call the school janitor (看门人) and see what we need to do. ”
We had two days to wait until our dad got home from work on Monday. He smiled, saying, “Well, I talked to the school janitor. He told me that he’d been sitting on his porch watching when you two were playing tennis. He said many windows had been broken, but we were the first ones to call. He said the school allows for window repair, so we won’t have to pay for the window.”
We discovered there’s always someone who sees what we do and we might as well admit (承认) our mistakes.

Ehrman Crest Elementary and Middle School, near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, celebrated its opening in August,2022. TIME magazine put the school on its yearly list of best inventions.
The honor focused on Ehrman Crest’s inventive design. There are mathematical designs on the floors and big magnetic (磁化的) maps on the walls. Some classrooms connect to the outdoors. There’s also a garden.
“We didn’t set out to be a best invention,” Seneca Valley School District superintendent Tracy Vitale said. “We set out simply to take the place of an 84- year- old building. That building needed too much work to be saved,” Vitale says, “so a decision was made to start fresh. We said, ‘This is our chance to build the school of the future.’ And that’s what we did.”
After adults made decisions about basics, such as the budget and the number of classrooms needed, the architects (建筑师)met with students. Michael Corb is with the architecture company CannonDesign. “We really pushed hard on, ‘What do you imagine a new school to be?’ and ‘What kind of environment would you love to learn in?’” he explains. “We wanted students’ opinions on how the school should look and feel.”
CannonDesign partnered with the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh on the project. Anne Fullenkamp, a director at the museum, said the design started with“ visioning sessions (设想会议)”, where kids could express their ideas. The kids were given a lot of strange materials for their designs. “The kids made it clear that the environment should be fun. The result is a school with all the excitement of a children’s museum. There are traditional classrooms, but there are also places for exploration and cooperation. Every space in this building is for learning,” Corb says.
Ehrman Crest hopes that the physical space will have a positive influence on student achievement. “We built our dream school,” Vitale says. “I think the lessons learned here are ‘Be creative as adults’ and ‘Listen to children’. ”
7. Why was the school honored by TIME magazine?
A. It has a very special design. B. It focused on many inventions.
C. It has many outstanding students. D. It is considered the best school in Pittsburgh.
8. What final decision was made on the school building plan?
A. To start the improvement of the old building. B. To make the new school the best invention ever.
C. To build a school of the future. D. To protect the old building well.
9. What did Michael Corb value most about the school’s design?
A. The space of classrooms. B. The materials used.
C. The school’s size. D. Students’ ideas.
10. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. An old building was replaced by a new school. B. Kids at a new school taught adults a lesson.
C. Architects learned a lot from school children. D. Kids helped design a school of the future.

根据第二段“We looked around and nobody was in sight except an old man sitting on a porch (门廊) halfway. ‘What should we do?’ I asked. My brother answered, ‘No one will know whose ball it is. No one saw us, except that old man. He probably can’t see this far. Let’s go home.’ We picked up the rest of our balls and headed home.”(我们环顾四周,除了半路坐在门廊上一位老人,没有人看到。
根据第四段“As soon as my father walked in the house, we hurried to him and told our story. He was composed and said, ‘Well, today is Saturday. On Monday, I’ll call the school janitor and see what we need to do.’”(我父亲一走进房子,我们就赶紧告诉他我们的事情。
故选A项。

【答案】7. A 8. C 9. D 10. D

We said, ‘This is our chance to build the school of the future.’
