The year after I graduated from college, my days followed a familiar pattern. Each day, I woke up on my sister’s sofa and opened my computer to a colored job hunt sheet: Yellow meant waiting to hear back. Red meant “rejected,” usually sent in the form of a polite email. Green meant “accepted,” though that color was elusive.
I knew I wasn't alone in the endless stream of “we regret to inform you” messages flooding my email inbox, but it sure felt like it. When I told this feeling to my friend Andi — someone I've long admired for her achievements — she expressed that she felt the same and added “Behind each success you see from others are a lot of rejections, too.”
The idea has stuck with me ever since. Now, every time I see a job announcement on social media, I imagine the even longer shadow (阴影) of rejections behind it.
There's a reason the rejection hurts so bad — and sticks around with us for so long. This strong emotional reaction may have arisen out of a need to be accepted by other humans and to identify threats to our sense of social belonging. Mark Richard Leary, a professor of psychology, wrote in an article about interpersonal rejection. In fact, a brain study showed that social rejection causes activity in the brain similar to physical pain.
Despite the natural tendency (倾向) to avoid these unpleasant feelings, there's been a movement in recent years to accept rejection. Social media users have increasingly posted their rejections in an attempt to normalize it. Psychotherapist Elayne Savage, who has written two books about the subject, said she often uses this approach with people to help them feel less alone in their experiences. “What’s so hurtful about feeling rejected is feeling so alone,” Savage said. “So I try to help people realize it really is universal.”
24. What does the underlined word“elusive”in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Bright. B. Rare. C. Unique. D. Complicated.
25. Why does the rejection often hurt so much?
A. It causes physical pain in the brain. B. It threatens interpersonal relationships.
C. It leads to a lack of emotional reaction. D. It results in a loss of social belonging.
26. What might be Savage's attitude to the movement in recent years?
A. Confused. B. Doubtful. C. Supportive. D. Uninterested.
27. What message does the author most want to give us?
A. A rejection can be a redirection. B. Rejection is part of life's journey.
C. Good things come to those who are rejected. D. Every rejection is one step closer to perfection.
B 25. D 26. C 27. B
根据第一段中“Yellow meant waiting to hear back. Red meant “rejected,” usually sent in the form of a polite email. Green meant “accepted, ”though that color was ....”(黄色表示等待回复。
根据第四段中“This strong emotional reaction may have arisen out of a need to be accepted by other humans and to identify threats to our sense of social belonging.”(这种强烈的情绪反应可能源于被他人接受的需要,以及识别对我们社会归属感的威胁。)
根据最后一段中“Social media users have increasingly posted their rejections in an attempt to normalize it. Psychotherapist Elayne Savage, who has written two books about the subject, said she often uses this approach with people to help them feel less alone in their experiences.”(社交媒体用户越来越多地发布他们的拒绝,试图将其正常化。
根据最后一段中““What’s so hurtful about feeling rejected is feeling so alone,” Savage said. “So I try to help people realize it really is universal.””(萨维奇说:“被拒绝最伤人的是感到孤独。”
C
Think back to when the women colored their fingernails with ground-up (碾碎的) flowers. Humans have been using natural pigments (色素) from plants or minerals to give color to things. However, pigments lose the brightness over time. Actually, some of the brightest colors in nature are not products of pigments at all, such as the green of peacock feathers. The green is vivid and can be maintained for a long time. This is what fascinates Debashis Chanda, a nanoscience researcher.
These colors are called structural colors. They are created from the arrangement of colorless materials to bend and reflect light in certain ways. This process is like how rainbows are made after it rains. Moreover, the beautiful colors are achieved without absorbing any light.
By borrowing the idea from nature, Chanda and his team may have created the world’s coolest paint ever, literally. Unlike pigments whose ability to reflect heat is determined by how dark the color is, structural colors don’t absorb any heat. Buildings painted black structural color are no hotter than those painted bright white. This opens the door for more colorful and cooler buildings without having to worry about the heat.
Chanda also found that structural paint weighs much less. Pigments rely on several layers to achieve depth of color while structural paint only requires one thin layer. Take a Boeing 747 for example. To cover the plane, about 500 kilograms of traditional paint is needed while only 1.7kilograms of structural paint is sufficient. This means the structural paint may contribute to higher fuel efficiency with a lower weight of the plane.
“Although it is not available right now, the possibilities for the world’s coolest paint are endless.” Chanda said. “Nature has its way to create harmony. So we want our color production inspired by nature to achieve this harmony.”
28. Which aspect of structural colors attracts Debashis Chanda?
A. The range of brightness. B. The endurance of vividness.
C. The eco-friendliness. D. The diversity of colors.
29. What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about structural paint?
A. Its process to bend light.
B. Its ability to maintain color.
C. Its performance to reflect heat.
D. Its possibility to hit the market.
30. What can be inferred about structural paint from the example of Boeing 747?
A. It is less expensive.
B. It may help lower the flight cost.
C Its color depth varies with layers.
D. It can make the plane safer than before.
31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. A Nature-inspired Artwork
B. Ways to Seek Structural Colors
C. Live in Harmony with Our Planet
D The Coolest Paint with Structural Colors
B 29. C 30. B 31. D
根据第一段“Actually, some of the brightest colors in nature are not products of pigments at all, such as the green of peacock feathers. The green is vivid and can be maintained for a long time. This is what fascinates Debashis Chanda, a nanoscience researcher.(事实上,自然界中一些最亮的颜色根本不是颜料的产物,比如孔雀羽毛的绿色。绿色鲜艳,可以保持很长时间。这正是纳米科学研究者Debashis Chanda着迷的地方)”可知,结构色彩的生动的持久性吸引了Debashis Chanda。故选B项。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“By borrowing the idea from nature, Chanda and his team may have created the world’s coolest paint ever, literally. Unlike pigments whose ability to reflect heat is determined by how dark the color is, structural colors don’t absorb any heat. Buildings painted black structural color are no hotter than those painted bright white. This opens the door for more colorful and cooler buildings without having to worry about the heat.(通过借用大自然的灵感,Chanda和他的团队可能创造了世界上最酷的油漆。色素反射热量的能力取决于颜色的深浅,与之不同的是,结构色不吸收任何热量。涂成黑色结构色的建筑物并不比涂成亮白色的建筑物更热。这为更丰富多彩、更凉爽的建筑打开了大门,而不必担心热量)”可知,本段主要介绍了结构漆反射热量的性能。故选C项。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Chanda also found that structural paint weighs much less. Pigments rely on several layers to achieve depth of color while structural paint only requires one thin layer. Take a Boeing 747 for example. To cover the plane, about 500 kilograms of traditional paint is needed while only 1.7kilograms of structural paint is sufficient. This means the structural paint may contribute to higher fuel efficiency with a lower weight of the plane.(Chanda还发现,结构漆的重量要轻得多。
根据第三段“By borrowing the idea from nature, Chanda and his team may have created the world’s coolest paint ever, literally.(通过借用大自然的灵感,Chanda和他的团队可能创造了世界上最酷的油漆)”以及纵观全文可知,本文主要讲述了科学家通过模仿自然界的结构性颜色,创造出一种不吸热且重量轻的油漆,所以D项“The Coolest Paint with Structural Colors(最酷的结构颜色油漆)”是本文最好的标题。故选D项。
D
They say that laughter is the best medicine and the effects of humor in medicine have long been studied. But what about the effects of humor on learning? This is the question that “Humor in Pedagogy : How Ha - Ha Can Lead to Aha !” by R . L . Garner attempts to answer. In the article, Garner details a study where he looked at the effects of humor in asynchronous (不同期的) distance learning and discusses the benefits and risks of using comedy to teach.
The study involved 114 students who watched a series of three 40-minute recorded lectures. Both the experimental group and the control group watched the same recorded lectures with one exception. Three humorous stories included in each of the lectures in the experimental group were seamlessly (无缝地) edited out of the control group’s lectures. After finishing all three lectures, the subjects were asked to rate the presentations and were then assessed (评估) on how well they remembered the material presented.
The results of the study show that humor can be a powerful tool when used in the classroom. The general opinion of the lessons was significantly higher in the experimental group. Students indicated in the “humor” group that the information was communicated more effectively and gave the teacher higher ratings. Further, the students in the group were significantly more able to remember the knowledge from the lectures.
While there are many benefits, the use of humor when teaching a lesson can also have its disadvantages. What is considered humorous varies from person to person. According to another study , humor that is offensive (冒犯的) to students can have a negative impact on students’ learning. Additionally too much humor can be harmful as it can weaken the credibility (可信度) of the instructor and result in a loss of focus of the instructional objectives. Garner also warns that just because you are telling jokes does not mean you are teaching effectively. According to Garner, the humor needs to match three conditions to be effective. It must be specific to what you are teaching, targeted to improve learning, and appropriate for the audience.
32. What is R. L. Gamer’ s article mentioned in paragraph 1 mainly about ?
A. The advantages of distance teaching. B. The effects of humor in the classroom.

33. In which aspect were the two groups different in terms of research design ?
A. Their learning time. B. Their lecture material.
C. Their experimental duty. D. Their educational background.
34. What might the experimental group agree with ?
A. They were taught effectively. B. Their lessons were more boring.
C. They felt disrespected sometimes. D. Their emotional stress was lowered.
35. What does the author mainly want to tell us in the last paragraph ?
A. Everyone’s sense of humor is different.
B. Teachers should avoid offending students.
C. Using humor in class brings unwanted effects.
D. Classroom humor should follow certain standards.

Reshape the challenge into a game. You probably can't refuse everything that causes you stress.___38___That's when you can try to reshape them . This might mean you turn them into a game or make them more fun. If there ' s a way to gamify or gain some perspective(观点)on what ' s stressing you out, do it .
Search for humor. Humor has a way of breaking the challenging power of intensely difficult situations.___39___When we laugh, we release endorphins, which are natural painkillers that also help us feel more relaxed. Develop your sense of humor by looking for the funny side of things, even in difficult situations.

When I entered university, I hoped to earn a scholarship (奖学金). Having been a Straight-A student, I believed I could take difficult subjects and really learn something. One such course was English Literature given by Professor White. I was extremely interested in the ideas he presented in class.
When I took the first exam, I was surprised to find a 75, C-plus, on my test paper, for English was my best subject. I went to Professor White, who listened to my arguments but wouldn’t change his mind.
I decided to try harder, although I didn’t know what that meant because school had always been easy for me. I read the books more carefully, but got another 75. Again I reasoned with Professor White. Again he listened patiently but remained unmoved.
One more test before the final exam. One more chance to improve my grade. So I redoubled my efforts and, for the first time, learned the meaning of “from A to Z”. But my efforts did no good and everything went as before. I knew no matter what grade I got; it wouldn’t cancel three C-pluses. I might kiss the scholarship goodbye.

1.词数应为120左右;
Before the final exam, I received Professor’s email asking me to come to his office.

A week later, I was surprised to find I got an A-plus.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Before the final exam, I received an email from Professor White to ask me to come to his office. I rushed in, discouraged and ready to give up. However, Professor White looked at me and said significantly, “If I simply gave you the A’s you expected, you wouldn’t push yourself to continue improving.” His words rang a bell in me, and I realized the wisdom behind his strategy. I understood his good intentions, so I determined to keep working tirelessly. Soon the final exam came. I finished it and waited for the result anxiously.
A week later, I was surprised to find I got an A-plus. A wave of accomplishment and delight swept over me. I immediately called Professor White to express my profound gratitude. Without his insightful approach, I would not have achieved such a breakthrough. The next year, I received a scholarship, proof of the impact of Professor White’s lesson: we alone set the bar for our own excellence.

C. Its color depth varies with layers.
D. It can make the plane safer than before.
31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. A Nature-inspired Artwork

C. The ways of changing Ha - Ha into Aha. D. The significance of humor in medicine.
33. In which aspect were the two groups different in terms of research design ?
A Their learning time.

1.词数应为120左右;
Before the final exam, I received Professor’s email asking me to come to his office.
