The Day I Felt Sad
by Molly Smith • illustrated by Helen Poole
SET THEME: I Have Feelings
The snow was falling and it was almost time to go home. I couldn't wait to build a snowman with Dad!
Then Mr. Tom came over.
"Roberto," he said. "Your dad called. He cannot come until three o'clock."
"I want to go home now," I said.
I started to cry.
"It will be okay, Roberto," said Mr. Tom.
"You'll have fun with us!"
At lunch, Jacob said he would share his dessert with me.
I didn't feel like eating.
At circle time, we read my favorite story.
It didn't make me laugh this time.
After the story, we sang a happy song.
I didn't sing along.
"Roberto, would you like to work with clay?" asked Mr. Tom. I nodded.
I made lots of little snow people.
I even made a snow dog.
Finally, Dad came. I ran to him and tears came pouring out. "I missed you," I said.
"Oh Berto," he said. "I'm so sorry you felt sad."
Then I wasn't so sad anymore.
"Look at what I made you," I said.
"Those are awesome!" said Dad. "I bet you'd like to go home and build a real snowman."
So we went home and made a snow Dad and a snow Berto!
Real-World wrap-Up
My Thoughts:
How do you think this child feels?
How can you tell?
My Feelings:
When have you felt sad?
What did you do to feel better?
The Day I Felt Sad
The snow is falling and Roberto can't wait to get outside. But when he has to stay late at school, he can't help feeling sad. Will his day turn around?
