Newmark LEARNING Read Aloud classics Why Owl Has Big Eyes and Rabbit Hops retold by Lenika Gael • illustrated by Kathleen Kuchera About the Pourquoi Tale A pourquoi tale is a story that explains how something in nature came to be. This version of Why Owl Has Big Eyes and Rabbit Hops is adapted from the Iroquois oral tradition. Oral Vocabulary fierce, p. 5 desired, p. 6 features, p. 7 complained, p. 7 elegant, p. 9 ruby, p. 9 terrified, p. 15 Make Connections What does this scene remind you of? When the world was new, Raweno, the creator of all things, made the animals one at a time. One day it was Rabbit's turn. "How should I make you?" Raweno asked. "I want long legs and long ears like Deer," said Rabbit. "Oooh, and I want sharp claws and sharp teeth, too, like Lion! I want to be fast and fierce. Can you make me like that, please?" "Yes," said Raweno. "I make all creatures exactly how they want to be." Raweno made Rabbit's back legs very long—just as Rabbit desired. Owl was watching. He couldn't wait for his turn. He was too excited to tell Raweno the features he wanted. "Oh, oh!" Owl complained. "Why is Rabbit taking so long? I want my turn NOW!" "Owl, you must be patient!" said Raweno. "I am making Rabbit's long ears now. I can only make the animals one at a time. Look away until it is your turn." "But it's not fair!" said Owl, who did not look away. "I don't want to wait anymore. I want a long, elegant neck like Swan's, and I want ruby red wings so I will be the most beautiful bird that flies through the air. I want to have my turn NOW!" Raweno did not want to listen to any more of Owl's whining. He grabbed Owl. "If you insist, I will make you now," he said. He pulled Owl's ears. He pushed Owl's head down into his neck. He gave Owl mud-brown feathers. Owl's eyes grew large from fear. "There, I have made you," said Raweno. "With these ears you will always listen to me. You won't be able to stretch your neck to look at me. And from now on you will sleep all day, so I can work in peace!" Owl was in shock. His eyes grew even bigger. He could not say anything except, Whoo! Whoo! Now that Raweno had dealt with Owl, he looked around for Rabbit, so he could continue his work. But Rabbit had disappeared. "Come back, Rabbit!" Raweno called as Rabbit raced away. "I wasn't finished making you." "No way!" said Rabbit. After what Raweno had done to Owl, Rabbit was terrified of him. She hopped away as fast as she could. This is why Rabbit hops. Raweno didn't finish making her—so her back legs are long, but her front legs are short. She is always afraid because she did not get the sharp claws and teeth that she had asked for. Imagine how different Rabbit and Owl would look if Raweno had made them exactly how they wanted to be. What happened in this story? Topic: Transportation Why Owl Has Big Eyes and Rabbit Hops The animals are each getting their different body parts and Owl wants his turn right away. Will Owl's impatience affect what he looks like? Read to find out. 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$null
