Several years ago, I read about William Helmreich walking every street in New York City. I thought, “I can do that for Montreal.” With little hesitation, I devoted the next five years of my life to the project.
I never walked through any shabby (破旧的) neighborhoods. From one end of my map to the other, all houses were well looked after. People went to great lengths to decorate their homes, and with this came one of the great pleasures of my walks: the different measures they took to decorate their frontage (正面). I discovered that pigs are a popular decorative element throughout the city. The type that is dressed up as humans, I mean. I saw pigs wearing dresses, shirts, and even swimming costumes.
Every outing has its wonders. Never assume a neighborhood has little of interest to offer. You must be trained to seek out strange things. Otherwise, you might never spot the clothes on the sidewalks. If I stopped to collect everything I saw lying around abandoned, I could fit out a small country. Where did they come from? How did people lose their shoes while walking out ? A puzzle.
As my project progressed, I felt like I owned the city. I could get off at any subway station and my feet remembered the route to the best shops. There was enough fun in my walks that I’d have a few laughs and feel more light-hearted than when I left.
Anyone can get in on this walking game. I admit with some shame. I used to huddle (蜷缩) in my part of town, feeling isolated, but walking its streets has truly opened my eyes to Montreal’s full menu. Now I’m quite satisfied with what I obtain. So just head to a neighborhood to nose around. I can assure you that you’ll feel like a pioneer with the discoveries you bring back.
4. Why did the author decide to walk the streets of Montreal?
A. She wanted to collect strange things.
B. She wanted to do some research.
C. She had to conduct a project.
D. She drew inspiration from an article.
5. What do we know about the neighborhoods in Montreal?
A. The shabby houses are abandoned.
B. People enjoy dressing up as pigs.
C. People enjoy decorating their houses.
D. All the houses are equal in length.
6. What amazed the author during her trips?
A. The houses in good condition.
B. The clothes left on sidewalks.
C. The routes of subway stations.
D. The animals walking on the streets.
7. How did the author feel on her walk?
A. Cheerful and content. B. Excited and energetic.
C. Relieved and grateful. D. Puzzled and upset.
D 5. C 6. B 7. A

根据第一段中“Several years ago, I read about William Helmreich walking every street in New York City. I thought, “I can do that for Montreal.”(几年前,我读到William Helmreich走在纽约的每条街上。我想,“我可以为蒙特利尔做到这一点。”)”可推断,作者决定走在蒙特利尔的街道上,是从文章中得到了启发。故选D。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“People went to great lengths to decorate their homes, and with this came one of the great pleasures of my walks: the different measures they took to decorate their frontage(正面). (人们费尽心思来装饰他们的家园,而这成了我散步时的一大乐趣:他们采用的不同方式来装饰房屋的正面)”可知,在蒙特利尔,人们喜欢装饰他们的房子。故选C。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“You must be trained to seek out strange things. Otherwise, you might never spot the clothes on the sidewalks. If I stopped to collect everything I saw lying around abandoned, I could fit out a small country. Where did they come from? How did people lose their shoes while out walking? A puzzle. (你必须学会寻找奇特的事物。否则,你可能永远不会注意到人行道上的衣物。如果我停下脚步收集所有看到的被遗弃的物品,我可以装备起一个小国家。这些东西是从哪儿来的?人们是怎么在外出散步时丢失他们的鞋子的?真是个谜)”可知,在旅行中,被丢弃在人行道上的衣服让作者感到惊讶。故选B。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“There was enough fun in my walks that I’d have a few laughs and feel more light-hearted than when I left. (在我的散步中有足够的乐趣,让我能开怀大笑,感觉比出门时更加轻松愉快)”和最后一段“I admit with some shame. Now I’m quite satisfied with what I obtain.(我有些羞愧地承认,我过去常常蜷缩在自己镇上的那一片区域,感到很孤立,但行走在这座城市的街道上真正让我领略到了蒙特利尔的全貌。现在,我对自己的收获相当满意)”可推断,作者在散步时感到很高兴和满足。故选A。
C
Jackdaws (寒鸦) are the smallest member of the crow family. They often live in a crowd. Indeed, when cold weather comes, they gather in the hundreds (and sometimes thousands) every evening so that they can sleep in the same place. If you’ve ever heard jackdaws during their evening gatherings and morning departures, you’ll know they are not quiet birds. Despite being fairly low-volume during the day, they are really loud on either side of their night-time get-togethers. Why might this be?
A team of the Cornish Jackdaw Project set out to determine why jackdaws are so noisy before they depart from their sleeping spot. The team’s theory was that the morning calls might be a jackdaw version of “voting”. The researchers suspected that each individual’s call might count as an “I’m in!”. When a certain amount of “I’m in!”s are called —and so a certain volume of noise is reached -the group might then depart as a unit.
To test this idea, the researchers artificially increased the level of calls during the jackdaws’ natural morning calls. Their expectation was that, if jackdaws really are “voting with their voice” to decide when to depart the sleeping site, artificially adding calls would make them leave earlier than they naturally would have done. Subsequent experiments confirmed their expectation. The team therefore showed that jackdaws use their calls as a sort of voting system.
You might wonder why this happens. The researchers suggest that individual jackdaws benefit from the voting system because they are less at risk of being killed and they can get more access to social information — such as where to find food.
So the loud calls of jackdaws in the morning are therefore not the pure chaos it sounds like. If you are ever being driven mad by the sound in the morning, you can find comfort in the fact that the louder they get, the sooner they will leave you in peace.
8. What aspect of jackdaws confused scientists?
A. Their strong team spirit. B. Their preference for noisy habitats.
C. Their collective sleeping habit. D. Their unusual calling behavior.
9. What happened to the jackdaws when artificial calls were added?
A. They stopped calling together. B. They left their sleeping spot earlier.
C. They became noisier and more active. D. They changed their sleeping location.
10. What does the voting system mean to individual jackdaws?
A. A signal of seeking food. B. A strategy for better survival.
C. A way to attract potential partners. D. A method of displaying social skills.
11. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Jackdaws are Noise Makers.
B. Jackdaws Have a Complex Voting System.
C. Jackdaws ‘Vote’ to Make a Group Decision.
D. Jackdaws ‘Vote’ to Choose Their Group Leaders.
D 9. B 10. B 11. C
根据第一段中“Despite being fairly low-volume during the day, they are really loud on either side of their night-time get-togethers. Why might this be?(尽管白天的声音很小,但在晚上聚集的时候,它们的声音非常大。为什么会这样呢?)”可知,让科学家们困惑的是它们不寻常的叫声。故选D。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“The researchers suspected that each individual’s call might count as an “I’m in!”. When a certain amount of “I’m in!” s are called —and so a certain volume of noise is reached -the group might then depart as a unit.(研究人员怀疑,每只寒鸦的呼叫都可能被视为“我加入!”当一定量的“我加入!”当噪音达到一定的音量时,这群乌鸦就会作为一个整体离开。)”以及第三段中“To test this idea, the researchers artificially increased the level of calls during the jackdaws’ natural morning calls. (为了验证这一观点,研究人员人为地增加了寒鸦自然鸣叫时的叫声水平)”以及本段中“Their expectation was that, if jackdaws really are “voting with their voice” to decide when to depart the sleeping site, artificially adding calls would make them leave earlier than they naturally would have done.
根据倒数第二段“You might wonder why this happens. The researchers suggest that individual jackdaws benefit from the voting system because they are less at risk of being killed and they can get more access to social information — such as where to find food.(你可能想知道为什么会这样。研究人员认为,个别寒鸦从投票系统中受益,因为它们被杀死的风险更小,而且它们可以获得更多的社会信息——比如在哪里可以找到食物。)”可知,个别寒鸦从投票系统中受益,因为它们被杀死的风险更小,即为一个更好生存的策略。故选B。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段中“Despite being fairly low-volume during the day, they are really loud on either side of their night-time get-togethers. Why might this be?(尽管白天的声音很小,但在晚上聚集的时候,它们的声音非常大。为什么会这样呢?)”以及通读全文,文章回答了寒鸦在晚上聚会时为什么会发出非常大的声音即寒鸦在离开睡眠地点前会发出大量的嘎吱声,研究人员认为这是它们用声音投票决定离开的方式。C选项“Jackdaws ‘Vote’ to Make a Group Decision.( 寒鸦“投票”做出集体决定。)”
D
It was extremely generous of the people of France to give the American people the Statue of Liberty, especially as the money was raised by donations from the public who recognized what the countries had in common. After all, both nations had fought revolutions to secure their nationhood.
Nowadays, it seems as though the gift has been returned with interest with the foundation of Euro Disney near Paris. Nevertheless, many French people feel it symbolizes a kind of “cultural colonialism (殖民主义)”. To tell the truth, I would not welcome the presence of such a theme park in the middle of England, for the same reason. Mind you, neither England nor France have ever been afraid to export their own culture and values.
Anyway, it is not difficult to understand why they chose to build Euro Disney near Paris. It is a geographically logical site, in the center of continental Europe, right by the capital city with its own attractions and so on. All the same, was it a culturally logical decision? There is the issue of “cultural colonialism” which I have already mentioned. What’s more, do the French need Mickey Mouse when they have their own cartoon hero in the form of the brave little Gaul, Asterix? Euro Disney’s rival the Parc Asterix has proved a popular destination for families wanting a day out. By the way, Parc Asterix is an easy drive from Paris too. Millions of dollars have been poured into Euro Disney to provide a top-class attraction but the thing is, can visitors expect an authentic American welcome? The answer must surely be “no”! There again, Euro Disney is a cheaper option for most Europeans than going all the way to the States.
All in all I would rather create theme parks which celebrated my own heroes than accept those from elsewhere. In a word this is because it is not always possible to transport culture — like some wines they do not travel well. In the future I will take my family to Florida to Disney World and the Magic Kingdom.
However, until that day arrives we won’t be going to Euro Disney. There is a time and place for everything.
12. What is many French people’s attitude toward Euro Disney?
A. They are unhappy with it. B. They show no interest in it.
C. They warmly welcome it. D. They think it a reward for the Statue of Liberty.
13. Why did the Americans choose to build Euro Disney near Paris?
A. It was a culturally logical decision. B. It symbolized the two countries’ friendship.
C. There were no theme parks near Paris. D. The location had a geographical advantage.
14. What does the underlined word “rival” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Partner. B. Competitor. C. Neighbor. D. Customer.
15. Which of the following is the author’s opinion?
A. Euro Disney can’t provide real American service. B. Parc Asterix is more expensive than Euro Disney.
C. Theme parks should accept popular heroes. D. American culture isn’t popular around the world.
A 13. D 14. B 15. A
根据第二段中的“Nevertheless, many French people feel it symbolizes a kind of “cultural colonialism (殖民主义)”. (然而,许多法国人认为它象征着一种“文化殖民主义”。)”可知,许多法国人认为欧洲迪士尼是一种文化侵略,由此可知他们对此很不高兴。故选A。
根据第三段中的“Anyway, it is not difficult to understand why they chose to build Euro Disney near Paris. It is a geographically logical site, in the center of continental Europe, right by the capital city with its own attractions and so on. (无论如何,不难理解他们为什么选择在巴黎附近建造欧洲迪士尼。它是一个地理位置合理的地点,位于欧洲大陆的中心,紧邻首都,有自己的景点等。)”可知,欧洲迪士尼的地点离巴黎很近,地理位置优越。故选D。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中划线词后的“the Parc Asterix has proved a popular destination for families wanting a day out (阿斯泰利克斯主题公园已被证明是想要出游的家庭的热门目的地。)” A.
根据第三段中的“Millions of dollars have been poured into Euro Disney to provide a top-class attraction but the thing is, can visitors expect an authentic American welcome? The answer must surely be “no”! (欧洲迪士尼投入了数百万美元以打造一个顶级的旅游景点,但问题是,游客能否期待得到真正的美国式欢迎呢?答案肯定是“不”!)”可知,游客在欧洲迪士尼乐园里无法享受真正的美国式服务。故选A。
Sometimes, it’s good to be bored
“I am dying of boredom,” complains the young wife Yelena in Chekhov’s 1897 play Uncle Vanya. Of course, if Yelena were around today, we know what she would do: pull out her smartphone and find something fun. Today it is easy to get rid of boredom.____16____
That is the finding of two fascinating recent studies. In one, researchers asked subjects to do something boring, like copying out numbers from a phone book, and then take tests of creative thinkings. The result? ____17____ In the second study, subjects gave more answers to a word test than a non-bored control group after being forced to watch a dull screensaver.
“An restless mind hungers for stimulation, so boredom becomes a seeking state,” says Sandi Mann, the psychologist at the University of Central Lancashire. “____18____” Parents will tell you that kids with “nothing to do” will eventually invent some fun games to play — with a cardboard box, a light switch, whatever.
The problem, the researchers worry, is that these days we don’t struggle to overcome these slow moments. “___19___” Mann says. “This might relieve us temporarily, but it shuts down the deeper thinking.” So here is an idea: Instead of always avoiding boredom, embrace and face it. Sometimes, anyway. Mann has found she gets some of her best thinking done when she is driving her car and therefore can’t be distracted by her phone.
____20____ The good type inspires you to see what can come of it. The bad type in contrast, tires you and makes you feel like you can’t be bothered to do anything. An important part of our modern task, then, is learning to evaluate these different types of boredom — to distinguish the useful kind from the harmful one.
A. And there is, of course, bad boredom.
B. Bored subjects came up with more creative ideas.
C. But what if boredom is a meaningful experience?
D. These moments are a lot more valuable than expected.
E. Actually, tips on getting away from boredom are countless.
F. We try to kill every moment of boredom with mobile devices.
G. When not satisfied with your state, you’re seeking and engaged.
C 17. B 18. G 19. F 20. A
上文提到““I am dying of boredom,” complains the young wife Yelena in Chekhov’s 1897 play Uncle Vanya. Of course, if Yelena were around today, we know what she would do: pull out her smartphone and find something fun. Today it is easy to get rid of boredom.(在契诃夫1897年的戏剧《万尼亚叔叔》中,年轻的妻子叶莲娜抱怨道:“我无聊得要死。”当然,如果叶莲娜在今天,我们知道她会做什么:拿出她的智能手机,找一些有趣的事情。今天摆脱无聊很容易)”指出人们讨厌无聊,总是想摆脱无聊。C项“But what if boredom is a meaningful experience?(但如果无聊是一种有意义的体验呢?)”
上文“In one, researchers asked subjects to do something boring, like copying out numbers from a phone book, and then take tests of creative thinkings. The result?(在第一项研究中,研究人员让受试者做一些无聊的事情,比如从电话簿中抄录数字,然后进行创造性思维的测试。结果呢?)”提到一项关于创造性思维的研究并提出问题。B项“Bored subjects came up with more creative ideas.(无聊的受试者提出了更多有创造性的想法)”回答问题给出答案,说明在这项研究中无聊的受试者提出了更多有创造性的想法,上下文语意连贯。故选B。
【18题详解】
上文提到“An restless mind hungers for stimulation, so boredom becomes a seeking state,(焦躁不安的头脑渴望刺激,因此无聊成为一种寻求的状态)”说明无聊会让人寻求新的东西。G项“When not satisfied with your state, you’re seeking and engaged.(当你不满足于你的状态时,你就会去寻找和投入)”与上文语意一致,也是中央兰开夏大学的心理学家Sandi Mann的观点,说明无聊会激发人的探索和创新精神。同时下文“kids with “nothing to do” will eventually invent some fun games to play — with a cardboard box, a light switch, whatever.(“无事可做”的孩子们最终会发明一些有趣的游戏来玩——用纸板箱、电灯开关等等)”对此进行了举例说明,上下文语意连贯。故选G。
设空句和下文“This might relieve us temporarily, but it shuts down the deeper thinking.(这可能会让我们暂时缓解无聊,但它会阻止我们更深层次的思考)”都是Mann的观点,根据下文中“This might relieve us temporarily(这或许会让我们暂时放松)”可知,设空句会提到一种暂时缓解无聊的方法。F项“We try to kill every moment of boredom with mobile devices.(我们试图用移动设备打发无聊的每一刻)”中提出我们用移动设备打发无聊,与下文“This”构成指代关系,上下文语意连贯。故选F。
下文“The good type inspires you to see what can come of it. The bad type, in contrast, tires you and makes you feel like you can’t be bothered to do anything.(好的类型激励你看到它(带来的好的)结果。相反,糟糕的类型会让你感到疲惫,让你觉得自己什么都懒得做)”提到两种不同类型的无聊。A项“And there is, of course, bad boredom.(当然,也有糟糕的无聊)”引出下文对两种无聊类型的对比和讨论,上下文语意连贯。故选A。

A. The houses in good condition.
B. The clothes left on sidewalks.
C. The routes of subway stations.
D. The animals walking on the streets.
7. How did the author feel on her walk?
A. Cheerful and content. B. Excited and energetic.

In a word, this is because it is not always possible to transport culture — like some wines they do not travel well.

The bad type, in contrast, tires you and makes you feel like you can’t be bothered to do anything.
G. When not satisfied with your state you’re seeking and engaged.
