Since I am a twin, a sense of competition is deep rooted in my brain. Healthy competition can push us to do fantastic things. It makes us struggle for a certain goal and gets us to do things faster. Competition can bring about respect, friendship, and mutual gain.
In the case with my twin brother, we have pushed ourselves to be good at sports, music, school, and even at work. This competitive spirit has been included into my life without my twin around. In a sense, I reproduce my twin brother in other people. I always try to be number one at whatever I do — or at least in the top three. I think I finish and do well in many areas of my life for the simple fact that I want to do well in them. The feeling of doing well against competent opponents is satisfying.
I enjoy the feeling of completing an important project. For instance, last year, I finished a poetry collection with my late father’s poems and my own poems. It was an honor to him and his work. In a way, I felt that his death was not unavailing and that his work was proved even more meaningful through this collection. It is hard to describe the moment of knowing when such an important project is set to rest. These deep emotions motivate me to complete projects on a regular basis.
The simplest factor that motivates me to do something is enjoyment. There are many people who do activities they do not enjoy for decades. I am not one of those people. I can work on tasks I do not like for a while but in the end, my main focus should be on something that I enjoy. If I find joy in doing a certain work, I engage in it for a large part of the day, or even all day without tiredness. Tiredness in most cases, in my life, is due to a lack of enjoyment in the work being done.
Each person has his or her own motivating factors. I hope this reflection has allowed you to dip deeper into your true nature.
4. What makes the author try to be the best at his work according to the text?
A. The encouragement from his twins. B. The friendship from his workmates.
C. The competitive spirit inside himself. D. The satisfying working conditions.
5. What does the underlined word “unavailing” mean in paragraph 3?
A. For good. B. Of importance. C. In vain. D. With respect.
6. What attitude does the author take towards his tasks?
A. He usually lacks enjoyment in the tasks being done.
B. He feels angry, frustrated and depressed in his tasks.
C. He enjoys the tasks that other people are unwilling to do.
D. He works without tiredness if he takes pleasure in tasks.
7. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?
A. Motivation B. Competition C. Reflection D. Satisfaction
C
Have you known about the websites that allow you to name a star after your beloved one, your kid or your dog for a small fee? Yeah, those are all fake — you could pay me to “name” a star for $50, and I’ll take your money and show the name online. I’ll even send you a fancy certificate! It seems that you’ve named a star, but it just doesn’t count.
In fact, the only organization that owns official naming rights is the International Astronomical Union, or the IAU, which was founded in 1919 and based in Paris, France. It is where astronomers and other professionals have reached the agreements and is the official record-keeping body for all discoveries in space.
Recently they do open up an opportunity for the public to name a dozen of planets outside the solar system. These planets will be among the first to be studied with the James Webb Space Telescope. However, they currently only have boring and complicated documents that were used to find them. That’s why the IAU is looking for something more interesting.
But before you start naming the planets, you should know the rules. First, nothing is rude or annoying. Second, the name should be less than 16 characters long and pronounceable in at least one language with no commercial or business names and nothing is named after a living individual or a pet.
The competition named “Stars Worlds”, is open next Thursday, January 20th. It’s the third such contest the IAU has held, and the purpose is to get the public more interested in science as well as the organization. The competition also helps to break centuries of European dominance when it comes to naming things in the night sky. So people around the world can share the joy of discovery and make their mark in history.
8. How does the author introduce the topic of the passage?
A. By listing figures. B. By taking an example.
C. By offering a solution. D. By showing differences.
9. What can we know about the IAU from the passage?
A. It was founded by France. B. It studies the space telescope.
C. It organizes trips to the space. D. It has the right to name the stars.
10. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The aim of holding the competition. B. The development of the interest in science.
C. The discoveries of “Stars Worlds”. D. The ways to participate in the competition.
11. Where is this passage most likely taken from?
A. A novel. B. A textbook. C. A diary. D. A magazine.
D
Tools have been used by humans for a long history. Today, we can still find tools that people used more than two million years ago in some parts of the world. They made these tools by hitting one stone against another. In this way, they broke off pieces from one of the stones. These chips of stone were usually sharp on one side. People used them for cutting meat and skin from dead animals, and also for making other tools out of wood. Human beings needed to use tools because they did not have sharp teeth like other meat-eating animals, such as lions and tigers. Tools helped people to get food more easily.
Working with tools also helped develop human intelligence. The human brain grew bigger, and human beings began to invent more and more tools and machines. The stone chip was one of the first tools that people used, and perhaps it is the most important. Some scientists say that it was the key to success of mankind.
Since 1960, a new kind of tool has appeared. This is the silicon chip (硅芯片). It is smaller than a finger nail, but it can store lots of information. It is an electronic brain. Every year these chips get clever, but their size gets smaller, and their cost gets less. They are used in watches, calculators and intelligent machines that we can use in many ways. In the future we will not need to work with tools in the old way. Machines will do everything for us. People will have plenty of spare time. But what will they do with it?
We humans used stone chips for more than two million years, but human life changed very little in that time. But now life is changing faster every day. What will life be like twenty years from now? What will the world be like two million years from now?
12. What can we know from paragraph 1?
A. The food early human beings stored.
B. The reasons of early human beings using the tools.
C. The chances of human beings discovering the tools
D. The aims for human beings cutting skin from dead animals.
13. Why is the stone chip considered the most important tool?
A. Because it was one of the first tools of mankind.
B. Because it developed cooking abilities of mankind.
C. Because it led to the invention of machines in the early time.
D. Because it was very important to the development of mankind.
14. Why is the silicon chip mentioned in the passage?
A. To introduce a new kind of tool
B. To give an example of using tools
C. To stress the importance of the silicon chip
D. To show that the humans’ ability of creating tools is improved
15. What does the author think of the life in the future according to the last paragraph?
A. It’s out of order. B. It’s less colorful.
C. It’s hard to predict. D. It’s full of meanings.

The Real Champion
I like running and for me, success was winning every race I participated in. My classmates called me Incredible Dash. One day, there was a sporting event planned in my school. Well-prepared for the running competition, I took part in almost every race there was. A large number of people gathered to watch. Crowds were eager to see the running race because it was the most exciting event. When the race for 400m started, all the boys ran fast. Unsurprisingly, I finished first in the race and received a big round of applause. While it was tiring, I felt proud and was on top of my world.
In the race for 200m, I ran full speed and finished the race first once again. The crowd gave thundering claps to me. I jumped all over the ground and was not bothered to give handshakes to my fellow racers.
Then came the race for 100m. Discouraged by the previous races, most boys quit the race except one, a boy named Matt who was invited as an honorary runner. Matt was born with low vision but he was a determined participant of many sports. The judge came to Matt and explained the situation, asking whether he would like to quit too. I, wild with joy, thought I would win the champion without effort. However, to everyone’s surprise, Matt decided to complete the event. I sniffed (嗤之以鼻), “It is a waste of time. I bet he even doesn’t figure out where the finish line is.”
The race of two started. On hearing the starting gun, both Matt and I ran to the finish line, Soon I sped up and left Matt behind. Just 30 meters before arriving at the finish line, I was expecting to receive the applause for the third time when I suffered a leg spasm (抽筋).

I can work on tasks I do not like for a while, but in the end, my main focus should be on something that I enjoy.

A. He usually lacks enjoyment in the tasks being done.
B. He feels angry, frustrated and depressed in his tasks.
C. He enjoys the tasks that other people are unwilling to do.
D. He works without tiredness if he takes pleasure in tasks.

The competition named “Stars Worlds” is open next Thursday, January 20th.
A. A novel. B. A textbook. C. A diary. D. A magazine.
【答案】8. B 9. D 10. A 11.

【答案】12. B 13. D 14. D 15. C

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】I fell hard to the ground. At this moment I felt sad and ashamed that I couldn’t finish the race. I lay on the ground, unwilling to face the fact and the crowds. I imagined the sneering faces and don’t know how to react. Suddenly a hand reached out to me. I raised my head and found it’s Matt. “Let’s run together.” he said. There was just sincerity on his face, no mock. I believed I should trust him, and gave him my hand.
Arm by arm, we walked towards the finish line. The crowds fell into silence, and then broke into loud applause. What did they applaud for? I think I know. Bowing to Matt, I thanked Matt for his help and admitted he was the champion. “No, I participate in the race not for the champion, just for the participation. You are very excellent.” he said. I was surprised at first, and then realized that the full engagement and good faith deserved the real champion.
