4 Modern Robots That Will Shape Our Future
There was once a time when robots were limited to science-fiction movies and novels. Now we have a wide variety of robots, available for our service. Here are 4 examples.
Valkyrie
NASA’s “superhero” robot is 6 feet 2 inches in height and was originally designed for use on the International Space Station. Valkyrie is able to walk by itself, pick up objects and use tools. NASA hopes that one day, it can help humans in danger zones and disaster-stricken areas. The robot is basically a she-bot since it was built with female characteristics.
Schaft
This robot, made by a Japanese company (which was later bought by Google), won the recent DARPA robotics competition. The 4 feet 11 inches in height robot can power itself instead of a battery. This gives it greater movement since batteries limit how fast the robot can actually perform tasks. Schaft blew the competition away.
Ian the Invincible
Ian, based on the Atlas robot, is created by Google-owned, Boston Dynamics. The 6 feet 2 inches in height robot has 28 hydraulically actuated joints and stereo vision. What makes Ian unique is the software which allows him to drive a car. Ian came second at the Robo-Olympics, but the 330pound giant still has quite a way to go.
Telebot
Still under development at Florida International University, Telebot will give injured and disabled police officers an opportunity to go back to work. The robot is 180 cm in height, travels on wheels and is remote controlled. Three HD cameras give Telebot a 360 degree view and with multiple sensors, it helps cops to monitor any dangerous situation from a safe distance.
1. What does Valkyrie feature?
A. Built-in cameras. B. The capacity to use tools.
C. Its unique gender design. D. The ability to pick up objects.
2. What do Schaft and Ian the Invincible have in common?
A. They have the same height. B. They offer similar applications.
C. They both won in the Robo-Olympics. D. They now belong to the same firm.
3. Who is Telebot intended for?
A. The disabled. B. The police. C. The elderly. D. The astronauts.
B
In my early teens, I was once given a film camera as a gift . On receiving it, I jumped on my bike, headed to Wimbledon Common and took photos, just for me: photos of trees and wildlife. I was out all day. On my way home I spotted a tree lit up by street lighting and tried to capture its beauty. Rushing home, I put the spent film in a special little envelope and sent it off to a photography store, desperate to see how it would come out. I took many photos then and loved the fact that when you processed your film you got back colour photos which froze the precious moments, gently encouraging the hobby and the payments for processing.
As I grew into adulthood, that simple, deep happiness gradually faded away. One weekend when I was busy answering the work calls, my eyes caught a box in the corner of the room. I suddenly felt a sense of sadness. The stress growing over these years had pushed the camera from beside my pillow to the box in the corner. I thought I needed a change.
I took out the camera and dusted it down. It was a great joy that it still worked. I bought new film and took the camera everywhere I went. Now it is always on hand to accompany me on journeys, to allow me time to myself. Even if the day is full and busy, I can seize some moments for myself to take photos, to observe the world around me.
The wall of my room now holds all my camera equipment on display, along with photos I've taken. To me, the room represents how I’ve found happiness: by reconnecting to the younger part of myself I laid aside, by allowing room in my life for pleasure to exist, and by creating an environment that allows opportunities for delight.
4. What did the author think of taking photos as a young boy?
A. Inspiring and practical. B. Tiring yet delightful.
C. Exciting and worthwhile. D. Difficult yet engaging.
5. Why did the author stop taking photos according to paragraph 2?

A. More fun in the daily routine. B. New journeys in the wild.

A. Revisiting Lost Childhood Memories B. Appreciating Beauty Behind the Lens
C. Escaping Teenage Sadness with Camera D. Regaining Pleasure Through Photography

The topic “slash youth”, referring to those refusing to be defined or bound by just one personal identity and choosing to undertake multiple careers, has fueled heated debate on social media. On Douban, a Chinese social networking platform, the topic has attracted about 11,000posts and has been viewed over 400 million times. China’s young people are keen to share their slash youth stories online, presenting themselves as multiple and sometimes distinct identities, such as a nurse and model, a teacher and stand-up comedian, and an engineer and musician.
Xing Eryang, a 31-year-old female resident in Beijing, founded the Douban topic in 2021.While staying diligent about her daytime work, she is developing her hobbies, including stand-up comedy and vlogging, into secondary careers during her spare time. And she is amazed to find her “slash life” philosophy followed by so many of her peers.
Weiheng, a 26-year-old woman in Guangzhou, and Tang Yuhan, a 27-year-old man in Xuancheng city, Anhui province, are both participants in the topic, with their stories earning thousands of likes so far. The two are both musicians in their spare time, even though they are thousands of miles apart and have different jobs in media and finance. Their passion for music has grown since college and they didn’t abandon their enthusiasm, even after entering the workplace.
Their reaction showed the gap between the young and former generations. “My parents used to say, ‘music cannot earn you money’, so the band thing was regarded as a waste of time. However, we want to pursue whatever we love and are willing to pay for it.” says Weiheng.
“The ‘slash life’ mania(狂热)shows that, along with China’s economic development, our society is becoming more and more diversified and inclusive, and it welcomes everyone’s self-fulfillment,” says Shi Yanrong, an associate researcher from Tianjin Academy of Social Sciences. “Young people no longer have to rely on work and money for their sense of self-worth. They tend to practice a carpe diem(活在当下)philosophy and create their own identities.”
8. What are “slash youth” more likely to do?
A. Create a topic on Douban.
B. Take diverse occupations.
C. Become a stand-up comedian.
D. Share their own stories online.
9. Which of the following amazes Xing Eryang?
A. Other young people’s positive response.
B. Hobbies developed while working.
C. The growing social networking platform.
D. Thousands of likes earned on Douban.
10. What did Weiheng and Tang Yuhan do to pursue their musical career?
A. They sent their stories online to gain more funds.
B. They shared similar interests in both their hobbies and jobs.
C. They never lost passion for music even if they had to quit college.
D. They stuck with their dream despite the older generation’s opinion.
11. According to Shi Yanrong, what is our society’s attitude to the “slash life”?
A. Doubtful. B. Supportive.
C. Unfavorable. D. Indifferent.
D
The best ideas are often so smart, so simple and so clearly needed; it’s strange to discover they don’t already exist. So it is with Farm My School, a program that’s turning underused land at secondary schools into commercially achievable, regenerative market gardens farmed by and for local communities.
Co-founded by permaculturist Ben Shaw and regenerative educator James McLennan, Farm My School connects local people and organizations through volunteering that helps establish a school’s market garden. Students learn about community networks, healthy eating, ecological responsibility, waste reduction and climate relief while helping with food production. Schools integrate all these into their courses while producing vegetable boxes every week that feed local families, supply the school’s food needs and ultimately pay the farmer’s salary.
Farm My School has gained the extraordinary enthusiasm of the locals, who answered an online shout-out to buy tickets to the program’s launch event at Bell Secondary School last October. Called Build A Farm in a Day Festival, the event featured workshops by Ben and James to share the skills required to build what they say is the world’s largest no-dig garden. “It was such a powerful event, and I think that comes down to people wanting to act now,” says James. “We charged for the experience and 600 guys turned up! They didn’t even need free drinks to get excited. We were gardening till midnight. It was amazing. We’ve got true community buy-in.”
Volunteers have since begun beneficial planting throughout the school. Next steps include further discussions with local communities, employing a farmer, and bringing in a teacher to develop courses. “We’ve seen this huge push towards seeing schools as regenerative spaces, not just for planting but for kids to be more connected to the outside world, and really seeing the school in a whole new light,” James says. “For us, the big excitement is that by allowing a professional farmer to take the responsibility of growing food, it’s not only on the school to look after that farm anymore, which eventually makes it much more sustainable,” adds Ben.
12. Why was Farm My School founded?
A. To raise the income of the local people.
B. To advocate a commercial farming plan.
C. To provide free food for local communities.
D. To turn underused campus land into market gardens.
13. How do schools involve students into the program?
A. By developing program-based courses.
B. By organizing voluntary work in communities.
C. By offering them part-time jobs in the market gardens.
D. By encouraging them to produce daily vegetable boxes.
14. What does the underlined word “buy-in” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Competition.
B. Investment.
C. Support.
D. Protection.
15. What is the highlight of the program according to Ben?
A. It brings in money to support the school.
B. The school farm will be able to last long.
C. The local people will take care of the farm.
D Students connect more with the outside world.

Jim dreams of becoming a famous artist to help lift his family from poverty. However, an illness in the family forces Jim to give up everything he worked so hard for.
Jim used to draw skyline on the roof of the school building, with a broken piece of pencil lead he’d found in a rubbish can. His drawing was close to perfect except for some color. His family lived from hand to mouth so Jim could only rely on himself. He had to help out on the local farm after school and saved some of the money for paints.
One day Mom fell seriously ill and was rushed to hospital at once. While the rest of his family were still at the hospital waiting Jim ran back home to get the household emergency money. But his heart sank when he saw the pitiful money. It’d never be enough to pay for Mom’s medical treatment. He ran into his bedroom and reached for his savings.
“Goodbye, paints and brushes,” Jim said as he added his to the emergency money.
One night on the way home, thinking of Mom in hospital he wanted to do something for her. He bent down beneath a streetlight and put his fingers in the dirt on the roadside. Before he knew it, he drew a portrait (肖像) of Mom.
He found red dust and mixed it with mud to add shadow, then picked up some grass and turned it into some kind of paint. He used this to add definition around Mom’s nose, eyes and hair.
When he was finished, Jim stood back up to study his work. The linework and shading were fine, but the colors…
“It’s still no good,” Jim shook his head.
“I disagree.”
Jim turned around and found a stranger standing behind him. He gave Jim a friendly smile and introduced himself as Mr. Finn.

C. Better skills of observation. D. Different styles of photography.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. Revisiting Lost Childhood Memories B. Appreciating Beauty Behind the Lens
C. Escaping Teenage Sadness with Camera D. Regaining Pleasure Through Photography
【答案】4. C 5. D 6. A 7. D

D. Students connect more with the outside world.
【答案】12. D 13. A 14. C 15. B

While the rest of his family were still at the hospital waiting, Jim ran back home to get the household emergency money.
Finn.

“I’m the editor-in-chief for a local art magazine,” Mr. Finn continued. “I love what you’ve done here. Such an unusual choice of medium, but what an excellent result! This is a very exciting form of artistic expression, young man. With your permission, I’d like to use a photo of your work for the cover of our next issue.” Jim nodded before he figured out how much he would be paid. But he was sure that he would earn some money and help his mom.
With the payment from the magazine, Jim could not hide his joy. Jim counted the bills Mr. Finn gave him several times on the way to the hospital. After he paid for Mom’s medical treatment, there was still some money left. Without hesitation, he rushed to the store to buy some painting tools and pigments. His heart almost burst with joy at the thought of being able to take care of his family through painting.
