B The first week of September was a week that I had been expecting (期待) all summer. I didn’t want summer to end, but I was excited about going to high school for my first week. When I got to school in the morning on the first day, I realized how large the school was, and how many students went there. I ended up in the wrong classroom because of the size of the school. Luckily, a kind senior showed up and guided me to my homeroom before I was late. I was happy to see that in a class of unfamiliar faces, the only open seat was next to my good friend Casey. My science teacher seemed like a good teacher. She was exciting and fun. After finishing four classes without too much of a challenge, I didn’t feel too bad about ninth grade. However, the fifth class changed everything. I didn’t feel ready after all. My teacher’s name is Mr. Valassidis but he told us to call him Mr. V. Mr. V told us that we would have to write 40 essays (文章) and read AP-level books such as The Odyssey this year. I love reading and writing. But come on. 40 ESSAYS? AP-level books? Now I was afraid. The courses in high school seem like they’re going to get much harder, but they haven’t yet. Even though my classes look hard, they look really exciting too. The first week passed quickly. Although a lot of things were overwhelming (令人不知所措的): the size of the campus, the crowds (人群) and the seniors, having a totally different experience than I had ever had before was really exciting. Now, I’m really happy about high school. I have lots of friends in my classes, I really like my teachers and I’m meeting new people. 24. How did the author feel when his high school life was about to start? A. Happy. B. Nervous. C. Relaxed. D. Helpless. 25. What happened to the author on his first day of high school? A. He was late for class. B. He was praised by Mr. V. C. He got lost on the campus. D. He met Casey for the first time. 26. What made the author afraid? A. The strict rules in classes. B. How his science teacher behaved. C. What he was expected to do with his studies. D. The reading homework on the first day of high school. 27. Which of the following can best describe the author’s first week of high school? A. Hard and unexpected. B. Busy but eye-opening. C. Tiring but meaningful. D. Different and exciting. C In most cases, people pick the easiest way out: the path of least resistance. Yet, it is the hard choice — the path of most resistance — that is more beneficial and provides most success in the long run. How do these paths differ? What are the dangers of an easy life? What are the rewards for a hard life? Taking the path of least resistance means choosing the easiest available option, without thinking about its long-term consequences. For example, you eat whatever and whenever you like. It may feel nice at first but they have a very high price — guaranteed obesity (肥胖). Most people in modern world follow this path, and this is why so many people struggle without self-control, good habits, etc. The path of most resistance is about choosing the option that will lead to more personal growth, even if it means suffering in the early stage. For example, it may cost you a lot to quit watching TV for hours. But over the long term, you’ll free up a lot of time that will lead to a more satisfying life than that of a couch potato. At first sight, this way is unattractive. It requires effort and loss of pleasure, and leads to potential suffering. Yet, on the other side of all that lies a world of more confidence and self-control. In the end, they more than make up for the passing shallow pleasures. We’re lazy by nature. Some may point out that because of this laziness that we now enjoy so many wonders of technology that people in the past would kill to have. But ask the same individuals praising laziness if they would be happy living a life where everything is given to them the moment they think about it. They would have zero difficulties, no aims in life and no obstacle to get over and no wise human would want such an existence. 28. How does the author show the dangers of choosing the easy path? A. By asking questions. B. By giving examples. C. By giving explanations. D. By making a comparison. 29. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refer to? A. Watching TV for hours. B. Getting shallow pleasures. C. Having many life struggles. D. Choosing the path of most resistance. 30. Which of the following would the author agree with? A. Life is to be enjoyed, not suffered. B. There should be some challenges in life. C. Set your life goals as early as possible. D. Good habits provide short-term pleasures. 31. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text? A. To tell us humans are lazy by nature. B. To encourage us to take the hard path of life. C. To prove that laziness leads to wonders in life. D. To show the common lifestyles of young people. D Previous studies have suggested children who spend their days looking out of the window instead of paying attention may be among the cleverest pupils. The latest study, however, suggests in the long run constantly daydreaming will leave children struggling to keep up with their peers. Dr Agnieszka Graham, a lecturer in applied developmental psychology at Queen’s University Belfast, said, “In school, often children can get in trouble for mind wandering. It is sometimes viewed as a sign of disrespect or misbehavior if they are not paying attention.” The study, conducted by Queen’s University Belfast, is the first to deal with the impact of so-called “mind wandering” on learning in young children. The researchers played a story about a fictional pharaoh (法老) in ancient Egypt to 97 children aged 6-11 and asked them a question every two minutes to check if they were paying attention. The study found that mind wandering had a significant impact on learning, as children who daydreamed the most remembered less about the story. The researchers discovered the children’s minds wandered a quarter of the time, and they could not help it. According to the study, daydreaming during a classroom-style listening activity is not only common but also harmful to memory in children. And because the impact of daydreaming is so clear, teachers should consider how they teach young children to reduce mind wandering. However, the research has found children, like adults, are unable to fully concentrate all the time; it’s likely that their minds will wander several times in a typical school day. The findings show that further exploring the causes and consequences of mind wandering in these early years at school could provide a solid foundation for developing interventions (干预), which will help children find out when their attention drifts away from the present task and refocus their attention. 32. Why did Queen’s University Belfast conduct the study? A. To improve children’s memory. B. To learn a story about ancient Egypt. C. To check children’s attention in class. D. To research the influence of mind wandering. 33. What might the researchers advise teachers to do? A. Help with further research. B. Help children concentrate. C. Reduce their own mind wandering. D. Work harder while teaching the young. 34. What does the underlined word drifts in the last paragraph mean? A. Breaks. B. Remains. C. Moves. D. Sticks. 35. What’s the author’s attitude to children’s mind wandering? A. Concerned. B. Supportive. C. Uninterested. D. Unclear. How to protect children Web fans from unsuitable material on-line while, encouraging them to use the Internet has long been discussed in the U.S. 36 . He had been suspended (使停学) many times in previous years because of his anger issues. When he entered my class, I thought the worst. Tyler sat in the back row. Every time I talked to the class, I would ask students questions, calling them by name. Unfortunately, every time I called on Tyler, he would respond with a joke. If he got an answer wrong, he would become angry. About a month into the year, I was still trying to connect with Tyler. I can usually get students involved in class discussions or at least have them sit quietly and attentively (专心地). By contrast, Tyler was often loud and sometimes rude. He had been in so much trouble over the years. He expected his teachers to know about his past; about how many times he had been sent to the office or suspended from school. I had found that these sorts of referrals (移交) were not very effective and that students would return from the office behaving worse than before. One day, Tyler was talking over me while I was teaching. I stopped my lesson and said, “Tyler, why don’t you join in our discussion instead of having one of your own?” With that, he got up from his chair, pushed it over and yelled something. I can’t remember what he said other than that he included some impolite words. I sent Tyler straight to the office, and he received a week’s suspension. To this point, this was one of my worst teaching experiences. Tyler’s anger was almost too much for me. The week Tyler was suspended from school was a wonderful time, and we got a lot accomplished as a class. However, the suspension week would soon come to an end, and I was fearful of his return. On the day of Tyler’s return, I stood at the door awaiting him._____________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ A spark of surprise flashed across his face._____________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 试卷第1页,共3页 原创精品资源学科网独家享有版权,侵权必究!2 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$………………○……………… ………………○……………… ………………○……………… … 学校:______________姓名:_____________班级:_______________考号:______________________ 绝密★考试结束前 2024-2025学年高一英语上学期期中模拟卷 (考试时间:120分钟 试卷满分:150分) 注意事项: 1. 1. On the day of Tyler’s return, I stood at the door awaiting him._____________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ A spark of surprise flashed across his face._____________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 试题 第7页(共10页) 试题 第8页(共10页) 试题 第11页(共12页) 试题 第12页(共12页) 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 绝密★考试结束前 2024-2025学年高一英语上学期期中模拟卷 (考试时间:120分钟 试卷满分:150分) 注意事项: 1. 1. I ended up in the wrong classroom because of the size of the school.(当我第一天早上到达学校时,我意识到学校有多大,有多少学生在那里。 V told us that we would have to write 40 essays (文章) and read AP-level books such as The Odyssey this year. Now, I’m really happy about high school. I have lots of friends in my classes, I really like my teachers and I’m meeting new people.(第一个星期过得很快。 D。 C In most cases, people pick the easiest way out: the path of least resistance. B 29. D 30. B 31. 根据第二段首句“Taking the path of least resistance means choosing the easiest available option, without thinking about its long-term consequences.(选择阻力最小的道路意味着选择最容易的选择,而不考虑其长期后果。)”可知,第二段首先讲述了选择阻力最小的道路意味着选择最容易的道路,这样并没有考虑长远结果,接着“For example, you eat whatever and whenever you like. 根据划线词所在句句意“The path of most resistance is about choosing the option that will lead to more personal growth, even if it means suffering in the early stage.(阻力最大的路是关于选择将带来更多个人成长的选项,即使这意味着在早期阶段受苦。)” 根据最后一段中的“They would have zero difficulties, no aims in life and no obstacle to get over and no wise human would want such an existence.(他们将没有任何困难、没有生活目标、也没有要克服的障碍,没有一个聪明的人会想要这样的生活。)” 根据全文内容,尤其是第一段中的“Yet, it is the hard choice — the path of most resistance — that is more beneficial and provides most success in the long run.(然而,从长远来看,艰难的选择——阻力最大的道路——更有益,也能带来最大的成功。)” B。 D Previous studies have suggested children who spend their days looking out of the window instead of paying attention may be among the cleverest pupils. D. Unclear. D 33. B 34. C 35. 根据第二段中的“The study, conducted by Queen’s University Belfast, is the first to deal with the impact of so-called “mind wandering” on learning in young children.(这项由贝尔法斯特女王大学进行的研究首次探讨了所谓的“走神”对幼儿学习的影响。)” 根据第三段中的“And because the impact of daydreaming is so clear, teachers should consider how they teach young children to reduce mind wandering.(由于幻想的影响是如此明显,教师应该考虑如何教幼儿减少走神。)” 根据“The findings show that further exploring the causes and consequences of mind wandering in these early years at school could provide a solid foundation for developing interventions(干预), which will help children find out when their attention drifts away from the present task and refocus their attention.(研究结果表明,进一步探索在学校早期走神的原因和后果,可以为制定干预措施奠定坚实的基础,这将有助于儿童发现他们的注意力何时drifts离了当前的任务,并重新集中注意力。)”可知,“their attention drifts away from the present task”和“refocus their attention”表达相反的意思,后者指重新集中注意力,前者应是说注意力从当前任务移开。 根据第三段中的“According to the study, daydreaming during a classroom-style listening activity is not only common but also harmful to memory in children.(根据这项研究,在课堂式听力活动中做白日梦不仅很常见,而且对儿童的记忆力也有害。)” 故选A。 How to protect children Web fans from unsuitable material on-line while, encouraging them to use the Internet has long been discussed in the U.S. 36 . On the day of Tyler’s return, I stood at the door awaiting him._____________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ A spark of surprise flashed across his face._____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 On the day of Tyler’s return, I stood at the door awaiting him. At last he came, walking with his hands in his pockets. That image immediately brought back memories of the boy throwing a tantrum in class the other day. Yet I managed to restrain my anger this time. These past few days, I had been building a wall between us with blame and punishment, so I thought to myself that maybe I should try another way. “I want to apologize for the quarrel that we had in the middle of class, and I’m really sorry if it hurt your feelings,” I said, finally breaking the ice. A spark of surprise flashed across his face. The naughty boy froze there, staring at me with wide eyes. It was clear that he had never heard an apology from a teacher before. “It is I who should say sorry,” he murmured, his face burning with shame, “I should have learned to control myself.” With a smile, I stepped forward and patted him on his shoulder, signaling to him to go back to his seat. In the days that followed, Tyler didn’t misbehave in class anymore and took an active part in class discussions. I had never expected “understanding” could make such a huge difference — it turned one of my worst teaching experiences into perhaps the best one. 词汇激活 行为类 ①等待:await/wait for ②控制:restrain/control/hold back ③低语:murmur/whisper 情绪类 ①抱歉的:sorry/regretful ②愤怒:anger/rage/indignation 【点睛】【高分句型1】That image immediately brought back memories of the boy throwing a tantrum in class the other day. Dear Monkey, I am sorry to hear that you have trouble adapting to the senior high school life, which is normal among us freshmen and I actually understand your feelings. Perhaps the following suggestions are of some benefit to you. To start with, I strongly recommend that you should ask your teachers or parents for help if possible, who can help you with your problem. Moreover, I feel it is significant to make proper arrangements for your school life so that you can keep a balance between schoolwork and exercises. Last but not least, making some new friends can make you confident and feel less lonely. I do hope you will find the advice useful and adapt yourself to the new school life soon. Looking forward to your good news and early reply. On the day of Tyler’s return, I stood at the door awaiting him. At last he came, walking with his hands in his pockets.
