A special place to stay can make a holiday — but also break the bank. We have picked new affordable places in Brooklyn, New York for $150 a room a night or less.
NU Hotel
There are 93 minimalist rooms at NU Hotel, each decorated individually. Free breakfast and on-site fitness centre are among its pleasantness. But it’s the location that really sets this hotel apart from its competitors. All corners of Brooklyn are within easy reach. Hungry? Walk down to Gus’s Chop House at Union Street, where every dish is delicious.
Arlo Williamsburg Hotel
Searching for a room with a view? Well, look no further. Many of the 126 rooms at this hotel have floor-to-ceiling windows looking out across Manhattan. There’s also a vast rooftop pool — you’ll have a hard time finding a better spot from which to survey the skyline. To explore Brooklyn, free-to-use bicycles are available on request.
The Box House Hotel
The 147-room Box House Hotel makes an ideal base from which to explore Brooklyn’s Greenpoint. There’s a homely feel to the accommodation here, and the decorations are anything but stuffy. This popular residential area has no shortage of food and drink options. Plus, you’re only a 10 minute walk up to the Grand Central Station.
The Rockaway Hotel
This beach-side property has 53 rooms. The relaxed rooftop restaurant and bar has views of both the distant Manhattan skyline and out to the Atlantic. Relax by the pool in the spa, or head to the beach where summer sun, sand and surf await you. For $4 the Jamaica Bay ferry takes you direct to Brooklyn and then into Manhattan.

Johnson was fascinated by nature as a child and would often go on long walks with her mother, who pointed out the names of wild flowers and trees. After beginning her writing career, she satisfied her love of animals by adopting cats and several dogs. Yet her introduction to the world of hedgehogs (刺猬) came through her own role as a mother.
In 2023, her only child, Alfie, was due to begin university in Cambridge and Johnson was faced with the prospect of an empty home. “I had a friend whose son was leaving home and she was so frightened of it happening. I knew I needed to plan ahead and keep myself occupied to avoid feeling the same,” she says. “A few members of my Women’s Institute group had been volunteering with Hodmedods Hedgehog Support (HHS), and it seemed like a worthy cause. I decided to join them.”
Johnson volunteered to be a hedgehog driver, ready to transport the animals in need to safety. On call throughout the week, Johnson soon found herself travelling across Norwich and hunting for hedgehogs. She picked the hedgehog up very carefully, placed it into the box and rushed it a local sanctuary (鸟兽保护区). Her duty is to rescue injured hedgehogs, ones found on private property that need rehoming, and babies that have been abandoned.
A year on from her first rescue, Johnson estimates that she has completed close to 30 rescues. With birthing season around the corner, Johnson is preparing for her busiest time of the year, looking after hoglets and the new mums. “They’re not just cute but they’re also amazing animals, native to our country, that need protecting,” she says.“ Housing developments put them at risk, as well as people cutting down hedges and putting up fences they can’t travel through.”
Johnson’s own garden has become a shelter for the creatures. The animals have also provided the inspiration for her writing. Her next novel, Prickly Company, tells the story of a woman who becomes passionate about creating a hedgehog highway through her neighbours’ gardens and discovers their secrets in the process.
4. Why did Johnson join Hodmedods Hedgehog Support?
A. She had similar experiences.
B. She was curious about wildlife.
C. She was inspired by other role models.
D. She needed a solution to her empty nest.
5. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. HHS animal care and welfare.
B. Johnson’s routine work with HHS.
C. The gravity of hedgehog’s survival.
D. The complexity of a hedgehog rescue.
6. What put hedgehogs at risk?
A. Overbirthing. B. Hunting.
C. Human activities. D. Non-native species.
7. Why does the author mention Prickly Company?

C
In the village of Barlaston, a strange language can be heard. It’s not the friendly Potteries dialect, but something that sounds a little like the lovechild of French and German. The concept of an easy-to-learn, universal second tongue was energetically promoted, drawing many speakers to the area. There has been an increase in people taking up Esperanto (世界语) recently. The Esperanto Association has increased the number of beginners’ courses by four-fold to keep up with demand.
Esperanto was created by Zamenhof, a Jewish-Polish doctor born in 1859 in Białystok, now in Poland. Violence between different groups was common in the world. While still a child, Zamenhof hit upon the idea that a constructed second language that was easy to learn and understand would allow people to talk as peers, rather than fight. In 1887, Zamenhof published his ideas. By 1905, the fundamental rules of Esperanto had been established by a conference of speakers in France, and Esperantist groups began popping up across the world.
In Esperanto, all words ending -o are nouns, an -a ending is for an adjective, while -e denotes (表示) an adverb. For instance, “vida” for visual and “vide” for visually, concepts that require different words in English. If you need to find an opposite, you can add the “mal” prefix: “pura” is clean, “malpura” is dirty. These building blocks can help speakers learn new words very quickly. There are no grammatical genders, verbs are strictly regular. It’s child’s play to learn compared with years of high-school language lessons.
Why isn’t Esperanto the current go-to for international communication? Esperanto is “neutral” (中立的) because it is not a national language, but that also means it does not have a state backing its use abroad. “People having to make a choice will see English as the financially better option,” says Sammy Kennedy, a young Esperantist who helps promote Esperanto in Manchester. “However, Esperanto gives you things that English will never be able to give you.” He credits the “accepting and caring” Esperanto-speaking community with helping him to overcome loneliness.
8. What phenomenon is described at the beginning of the text?
A. Esperanto is gaining popularity. B. Local dialects are hard to follow.
C. Beginners’ courses are profitable. D. Small villages attract more tourists.
9. Why was Esperanto initially created?
A. To replace English. B. To advance medicine.
C. To ease peer pressure. D. To promote world peace.
10. What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about Esperanto?
A. Its development. B. Its distinct features.
C. Its appeal to the kids. D. Its links with English.
11. What does Kennedy say Esperanto brings to its speakers?
A. A sense of belonging. B. Better financial options.
C. Higher academic grades. D. A strong national identity.
【答案】8. A 9. D 10. B 11. A

We are all guilty of grabbing our phones and scrolling through social media when times get boring. Psychologists have noted in numerous studies over the past decade that individuals engage in social media and other digital media to escape boredom. However, the same studies reveal that consuming such media can actually increase boredom in individuals.
That result may be a product of constantly “switching” between different content online, the endless pursuit of the next piece of media to alleviate present boredom.
To investigate the role that fast- forwarding and switching videos has in boredom, Dr Katy Tam, the lead author of the research and researchers performed two experiments on about 1,200 people. In the first trial, the study participants had two viewing experiences. They both watched a 10- minute video without the option to switch or fast- forward and then had a 10- minute period where they could switch between seven 5- minute videos. In the second experiment, participants watched a 10- minute video in one round and in the other round were allowed to fast- forward or rewind through a 50- minute video.
Participants predicted they would be less bored with the option to switch or fast- forward for both experiments but reported afterward that they found watching one video all the way through to be more engaging, satisfying and meaningful.
Tam said boredom was closely linked to attention. “We feel bored when there’s a gap between how engaged we are and how engaged we want to be,” she said. “When people keep switching through videos, they become less engaged with the videos and they are looking for something more interesting. This can lead to increased feelings of boredom.”
Finally, said Tam, it could be worth taking your time before hitting the fast- forward or skip buttons. “Our research shows that while people fast- forward or skip video s to avoid boredom, this behaviour can actually make them feel more bored,” she said. “Just as we pay for an immersive (沉浸式) experience in a movie theatre, enjoyment often comes from immersing ourselves in videos rather than swiping (滚屏) through them.”
12. What does the underlined word “alleviate” in paragraph 2mean?
A. Ease. B. Understand. C. Define. D. Justify.
13. Tam’s study found that participants reported higher levels of boredom when ______.
A. the length of a video was too long. B. the video content was played repeatedly.
C. they switched between videos and within video. D. they watched the same video through to the end.
14. What did Tam present in paragraph 5?
A. Ways of watching videos. B. The design of his experiment.
C. Examples of divided attention. D. The cause of people’s boredom.
15. What was Tam’s suggestion in the last paragraph?
A. Pay for a viewing experience. B. Refer to the ratings before watching videos.
C. Go to a cinema for an immersive experience. D. Stay focused on the content while watching videos.
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. D 15. D
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。本文介绍了关于无聊感的研究,指出快速浏览和切换视频可能会增加无聊感,并提出了相关建议。
【12题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“That result may be a product of constantly “switching” between different content online(这种结果可能是不断地在不同的在线内容之间“切换”的产物)”以及后文“present boredom(当前的无聊)”可知,不断切换在线内容以及追求下一个媒体是为了缓解当下的无聊。故划线词意思是“缓解”。故选A。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Participants predicted they would be less bored with the option to switch or fast- forward for both experiments but reported afterward that they found watching one video all the way through to be more engaging, satisfying and meaningful.(参与者预测,在两个实验中,切换或快进的选择不会让他们感到无聊,但之后他们报告说,他们发现从头到尾看一个视频更有吸引力、更满意、更有意义)”可知,Tam的研究发现,当参与者在视频之间切换和在视频内部切换时,他们的无聊程度更高。故选C。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“Tam said boredom was closely linked to attention. “We feel bored when there’s a gap between how engaged we are and how engaged we want to be,” she said. “When people keep switching through videos, they become less engaged with the videos and they are looking for something more interesting. This can lead to increased feelings of boredom.”(Tam说,无聊与注意力密切相关。“当我们投入程度和我们想要的投入程度之间存在差距时,我们会感到无聊,”她说。“当人们不停地切换视频时,他们对视频的参与度就会降低,他们会寻找更有趣的东西。这可能会增加无聊感。”)”可知,Tam在第5段提出了人们无聊的原因。故选D。
【15题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段““Our research shows that while people fast- forward or skip video s to avoid boredom, this behaviour can actually make them feel more bored,” she said. “Just as we pay for an immersive (沉浸式) experience in a movie theatre, enjoyment often comes from immersing ourselves in videos rather than swiping (滚屏) through them.”(她说:“我们的研究表明,虽然人们为了避免无聊而快进或跳过视频,但这种行为实际上会让他们感到更加无聊。就像我们花钱去电影院享受身临其境的体验一样,享受往往来自于让自己沉浸在视频中,而不是在视频中刷屏。”)”可知,Tam在最后一段的建议是看视频时要专注于内容。故选D。

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
We were near the mountaintop of Tupendo when a rock got moved and hit my lower leg halfway between ankle and knee. The impact cut through both bones and removed a big chunk (块) of my leg. I found myself hanging from a rope,1,600m off the ground, in sharp pain. I was afraid it might just drop off.
After binding it to an ice- axe, my climbing partner abseiled down (缘绳下降) to get help. For two days I lay alone. My leg started to smell pretty bad.
It took six days to get me off the mountain and to a hospital in northern India. The hospital was basic and the next day I was flown to Delhi for emergency surgery and then, when stable enough, back home. In the UK, after nine operations, my doctor recommended an amputation (截肢) if I wanted to be able to walk properly again.
I was very sad. I had been competing in sport since I was a teenager. My physical fitness and love of running felt as if they were an inseparable part of the person I was. I visited a center specializing in prostheses and the consultant there seemed terribly enthusiastic about my prospects as an amputee, telling me I would be walking within six months and maybe even playing football after a year. I found the experience too depressing for words and was determined to put off the decision for as long as possible.
Every night I had the same dream: I would be hobbling along a grassy path using my crutches (拐杖) and then, suddenly, I would lift them up and throw them in the river and I’d start walking, and then running, as if there had never been anything wrong. When I woke it would take me a few seconds to remember.

A. To provide an example. B. To explain an innovation.
C. To summarize the passage. D. To introduce the novel.

第二节 (满分25分)
