In 1951, the owner of the Guinness Brewery, Sir Hugh Beaver, wanted to know about the
fastest bird in Europe. Then he thought that a book which answered such questions might be
popular. Later the first Guinness Book of World Records came out in 1955 and has been a
best-seller ever since. More than 60,000 new records are sent into the book each year. The
records are put into different kinds, such as human body, the natural world, science and
technology, arts, travel, sports and so on.
You can learn that the oldest person is a woman who lived to be 122 years and 164 days.
The longest moustache(胡子)reached a length of 1.6 meters and that the longest poisonous
(有毒的)snake is 5.71 meters long. There are also strange records, like the Englishman who
got a small car of 159.6 kilograms on his head for thirty-three seconds! There are also many
Chinese records. For example, Tian’anmen Square is the largest square in the world. China
has the greatest number of hospitals in the world. A special and delicious record was set in
1997. To celebrate Hong Kong’s return to China, the world’s largest jiaozi was made, which
was about 480 kilograms!
Why are people so interested in world records? Part of the reasons may be the same
curiosity as Sir Hugh. We want to know what is possible and find out just how far we can
push ourselves. Clearly, we are interested in some strange and unusual facts. Whether we are
out to set a new record ourselves or simply enjoy reading about the new records, the Guinness
Book of World Records makes for interesting reading.

Sunshine, beaches and coconuts—these are why people usually go to Hainan. But more
than a good place for travelers and foodies, it’s also a wonderland of plants and animals.
Hainan Tropical Rainforest(热带雨林)National Park, in the south-central part of Hainan
Island, has the most well-preserved(保存完好的)tropical rainforests in China. It covers 4,269
square kilometers. More than 95 percent of the park is forest and is home to 3,653 kinds of
plants and 540 kinds of animals.
The park is the only living place of the world’s most endangered animal— the Hainan
gibbon. They look like monkeys, but have no tails. They live in the trees their whole lifetimes.
They eat fruits and leaves from more than 130 plants. The number of Hainan gibbons has
increased from fewer than 10 in the 1980s to 36 in 2022.
Not just a sweet home to animals, the park is a “live museum” of amazing plants. More
than 400 kinds of plants grow only in Hainan. Cycas hainanensis(海南苏铁)is one of them.
With beautiful leaves, this plant can live to be 200 years old. If it lives in the Yangtze River
and North China, it grows almost without flowers or fruit. But in Hainan, they have flowers
and fruit almost every year as long as they are over ten years old, thanks to the warm and
humid(湿润的)weather.
With so many plants and animals, it is comparable to the Amazon rainforest in Brazil.
That’s why people call the park a treasure(宝藏)for both China and the world.
31.Hainan is popular with people because of the .
A.beaches B.museums C.theaters

33.What can we infer(推断)according to Paragraph 3?
A.The park plays an important role in saving Hainan gibbons.
B.There will be fewer and fewer Hainan gibbons in the future.
C.People will see Hainan gibbons in other cities in China.
34.What do we know about Cycas hainanensis?
A.It can’t live for a long time.
B.It can have fruit every year.
C.It likes warm and humid weather.
英语 第 5页(共 8页)
35.Which is the best title of this passage?
A.Hainan, a must-see place
B.A treasure in Hainan
C.Animals in Hainan
