Books Recommended by TED Speakers
A Mathematician’s Apology by G. H. Hardy
This is the best book I know about the sheer beauty of mathematics. Here’s one lovely quote from the book: “A mathematician, like a painter or a poet, is a maker of patterns. If his patterns are more permanent than theirs, it is because they are made with ideas.”
— David Brenner (TED Talk: A new weapon in the fight against superbugs)
The Future by Nick Montfort
This is a short read but a great look at some key future thinkers throughout history. Through delightfully written case studies, Montfort makes the argument that the future can be made and not predicted. It’s a must-read for anyone interested in future studies and the role that sci-fi, speculative design and big ideas play in shaping our future relationship with technology.
— Raphael Arar (TED Talk: How we can teach computers to make sense of our emotions)
Improv Wisdom: Don’t Prepare, Just Show Up by Patricia Ryan Madson
“We all could use a lesson on how to have fun in business and in life. Madson does a wonderful job providing strategies on how to deal with life’s many challenging situations by drawing from the maxims of improvisational theater.”
— Lisa Dyson (TED Talk: A forgotten Space Age technology could change how we grow food)
If You Want to Write: A Book About Art, Independence and Spirit by Brenda Ueland
For those who know they have something to express, these stressful times can feel a bit hopeless — it may seem impossible to find the time, skill and energy to create. This is one of the most timeless books on how to regain that hope, and it’s also a delightful read, in and of itself.
— Sebastian Wernicke (TED Talk: How to use data to make a hit TV show)

I’d thought I was ready for the challenges of graduate school. But when I left Nepal to further my study abroad, I felt as if I had dropped into the vast ocean where every fish swam faster than I could. The coursework wore me out. Instead of being the outgoing person I had been, I suddenly became a shy girl. Worse still, my research was not progressing at the pace I had expected.
I needed something to return to my old self. After a conversation with my friend, I thought I should go to help others. Then I began to search online for volunteer opportunities. Luckily, a local organization that drives senior citizens to their destinations was looking for volunteers. I thought it might be just what I needed.
I was a bit anxious before my first ride, as I had not interacted much with people outside school. But I quickly recovered my poise when I picked up an old woman who wanted to go downtown. She talked with me like my grandmother and shared how thankful she was. Connections like this and the smiles on my passengers’ faces encouraged me to continue driving.
I started to volunteer about three hours every weekend — time I otherwise would have spent oversleeping or looking through information on social media. Sharing stories with my passengers was rewarding. And seeing how eager they were to spend time going out inspired me to think about how to spend my time which used to slip away.
As my confidence grew, I began opening up to my fellow graduate students about the ups and downs in my research and was surprised to discover that all my fellows faced the same challenge — even the student who I had considered to be on top of everything. As these connections grew, my natural personality began to reappear.
24. What led to the author becoming shy?
A. Fearing to talk to strangers. B. The heavy academic burden.
C. The loneliness of being abroad. D. Being unfamiliar with the new school.
25. Which of the following can best explain the underlined word “poise” in paragraph 3?
A. Strength. B. Courage. C. Enthusiasm. D. Calmness.
26. What can we infer about the author from the last paragraph?
A. She worked very hard on her research.
B. She experienced a sense of incompetence.
C. She was in the same boat as her schoolmates.
D. She regained connection with her friends.
27. What ’s the main idea of the text?
A. The author regained herself in the process of volunteering.
B. The author assisted with old people’s daily life.
C. The author communicated with senior citizens.
D. The author informed us of her academic burden.

That banana peel from your lunch, turned into graphene(石墨烯), a valuable material in electronics and many other fields, could bring a massive reduction of the enironmental effect of concrete(混凝土) and other building materials.
A new process introduced by the Rice University lab of chemist James Tour can turn large quantities of almost any carbon source into valuable graphene. Tour said the “flash graphene” technique can transform a ton of coal, food waste or plastic into graphene for a tiny amount of the cost used by other graphene-producing methods.
The world throws out 30% to 40% of all food every year and plastic waste is of worldwide concern. Tour’s team has already proven that any solid carbon-based matter, including mixed plastic waste and rubber tires, can be turned into graphene.
As reported in Nature , a concentration of as little as 0.1% of flash graphene in the cement(水泥) used to bind concrete could lessen its massive environmental effect by a third. Production of cement reportedly gives off as much as 8% human-made carbon dioxide every year. “By adding graphene to concrete, we could use less concrete for buildings,” Tour said.
The flash graphene process gets its name from the spark of bright light created when the chemical reaction occurs. Most of the energy is not turning into heat, but instead goes into a type of thermal electromagnetic radiation (热电磁辐射). That radiation breaks every carbon-carbon bond and any extra energy leftover is released in the form of the bright flash of light. Flash graphene is made in just 10 milliseconds this way.
The problem with the flash process at the current stage is: The researchers could only make about a picogram of graphene, an extremely small amount of graphene that might be suitable for electronics. Tour hopes to produce a kilogram a day of flash graphene within two years, starting with a project recently funded by the Department of Energy to change U.S.-sourced coal. “This could provide an outlet for coal on a large scale by changing it inexpensively into a much-higher-value building material,” he said.
28. What can we learn about James Tour’s graphene-producing method?
A. It is useful but of little commercial value.
B. It can make rubber tires stronger and more durable.
C. It has a cost advantage and easily-accessible raw materials.
D. It helps the world reduce food waste by about 40%.
29. The data listed in Paragraph 3 and 4 shows us flash graphene’s ____________.
A. influence on the building industry
B. role in increasing cement production
C. potential in reducing global warming
D. possibility in changing how we live
30. What will Tour focus on within the next two years?
A. Searching for more high-value building materials.
B. Increasing the productivity of flash graphene.
C. Inventing the electronics suitable for the flash graphene.
D. Improving the efficiency of thermal electromagnetic radiation.
31. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To explain the environmental effects of concrete.
B. To introduce the function of graphene in various fields.
C. To encourage people to be less dependent on carbon-based fuels.
D. To present a way to turn waste into treasure.

A new study, published in Music Education Research, examined whether an extended music education had an impact on pupils’ experienced satisfaction with school. Nearly 1,000 pupils at ten Finnish schools with extended music classes and comparison classes participated in a survey that measured the quality of school life at Year 3 and Year 6.
According to the results, the differences between the extended music classes and the comparison classes were significant at Year 6. But there were no differences between the groups at Year 3. The most likely explanation is the amount of music lessons which was four hours per week for the extended music classes and one lesson per week for the normal classes.
Merely attending an extended education class at Year 3 did not cause differences in school satisfaction. To explore whether belonging to any extended education class would have the same benefits, some extended education classes that focus on visual arts and sports were recently included in the analysis. However, school satisfaction in these classes did not differ from that in the normal ones at Year 6.
"Singing in a choir and group performance are popular activities at extended music classes. Other studies have established that people find it very satisfying to synchronize (合拍)with one another. That increases connection within the group and may even make people like each other. Other objects in the school do not have as much training in synchrony and cooperation as music lessons, which could explain part of the phenomenon,” says doctoral student Pävi-Sisko Eerola, at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland.
A particular answer may be that girls usually tend to give more positive scores on satisfaction with school and they also make up the majority of pupils at extended music classes. However, the gender differences do not fully explain the observed results. In fact, it seems that extended music classes improve the quality of school life more for boys than girls.
Maybe it’s impossible to adopt the Finnish music education system, but the benefits of having a few extra hours of art and self-expression via music every week are dramatic and necessary.
32. What did the new study find?
A. Elder kids are content with school when receiving more music lessons.
B. Extended music education is getting popular in many Finnish schools.
C. Primary pupils have different preference for the class arrangements.
D. Music education may have different functions in different grades.
33. What is the characteristic of those newly included education classes?
A. They pay more attention to kids’ feelings and emotions.
B. They stress visual appreciation and physical activity.
C. They are extended to the same length and frequency.
D. They are attended by both younger and elder kids.
34. What’s the benefit of extended music classes according to Eerola?
A. They can promote teamwork between students.
B. They can build good teacher-student relationship.
C. They effectively practice studenls’ singing skill.
D. They will develop students’ interest in music.
35 Who will probably be most interested in the finding of the new study?
A. The researchers. B. Music teachers.
C. Finnish students. D. School administrators.

第二节读后续写(满分25分)
67. 读后续写
A couple of months before I started high school, my parents gave me the greatest gift any teenage boy could ask for: a cellphone. I lived on that phone all summer with my face buried in its screen. I ignored my family and my surroundings. Being connected was more important than being present.
So, you can imagine my displeasure when I learned what my dad had planned for our family vacation that year. “This year,” my dad said, “we’ll be doing something special. We’re going camping!” His excitement was met with a disappointed sigh. It wasn’t my dream vacation because mind was on my phone. I was so buried in the screen, in fact, that the first time I can remember truly looking up was when we drove across a bridge on the way to our campsite.
I stared out the window and saw redwoods towering above us, their branches threatening to pierce (刺破) the blue sky. I saw a roaring river, with slivers of silky black water appearing between crashing white rapids. The air blowing into the car from the open windows was hot. But none of that mattered to me. The reason I had looked up was for something far more serious: my phone no longer had service.
The last hour of the drive was increasingly tense. My dad announced that he had chosen a campsite that had no cell service, and that my phone would be useless until we returned home. I would be trapped in the forest for four days with no way to contact the outside world! I went through the full cycle of teenage emotions during the first day of the trip. I raged. I bargained. I begged. I flip-flopped (转变) from a depressive state to anger and back.
I went to bed angrily that night. But when I awoke in the morning, something had changed.
注意:
1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

【原文】W: Welcome to the Selmore Public Library. To join the library, you need a membership card. Take your passport or ID card, as well as show your home address, to the information desk. After a period of two years, all readers are required to go to the desk with a paper that has their name and present address on it so the library can keep up-to-date records of where people are living.
There’s no need to register again and there is no charge for this.
If you can’t find the book you want on the shelves, you can book it in advance. If it’s in another library in the city, we can usually get it for you within a week. If someone else has borrowed it, it can take a few weeks. Either way, we tell you by phone when the book can be picked up. We will hold it for you for five days.
Books can be borrowed for fourteen days. Children’s books also have a two-week borrowing period. So do the CDs but DVDs, both children’s and adults’, can only be borrowed for up to seven days. Dictionaries can be borrowed but normally only for one day.
The library opening hours have been changed slightly. Instead of opening late on Wednesday evenings until 8:00 p.m., we will be closing at 6, but we will close at 7 instead of 5:30 on Saturdays and we are going to open on Sunday mornings from next month - 9 to 1. Notices are posted in the library about these.

“We all could use a lesson on how to have fun in business and in life Madson does a wonderful job providing strategies on how to deal with life’s many challenging situations by drawing from the maxims of improvisational theater.”

D She regained connection with her friends.
27. What ’s the main idea of the text?
A. The author regained herself in the process of volunteering.
B. The author assisted with old people’s daily life.
C. The author communicated with senior citizens.
D. The author informed us of her academic burden.
【答案】24. B 25. D 26. C 27. A

【答案】28. C 29. C 30. B 31. D

【分析】本文是一篇说明文。研究者利用高温可将废弃的食物或塑料垃圾等材料转换为极具经济价值的石墨烯。
28题详解】
细节理解题。 根据第二段“A new process introduced by the Rice University lab of chemist James Tour can turn large quantities of almost any carbon source into valuable graphene. Tour said the “flash graphene” technique can transform a ton of coal, food waste or plastic into graphene for a tiny amount of the cost used by other graphene-producing methods.(莱斯大学化学家詹姆斯·图尔(James Tour)的实验室引入了一种新工艺,可以将几乎任何碳源的大量碳转化为有价值的石墨烯。图尔说,这种“闪蒸石墨烯”技术可以将一吨煤炭、食物垃圾或塑料转化为石墨烯,其成本仅为其他石墨烯生产方法的极小部分。)”可知,James Tour 的石墨烯生产方法,不仅有成本优势,而且原材料易得。故选C项。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。 根据第三段 “The world throws out 30% to 40% of all food every year and plastic waste is of worldwide concern.(全世界每年扔掉30%到40%的食物,塑料垃圾引起了全世界的关注。)”以及第四段“As reported in Nature , a concentration of as little as 0.1% of flash graphene in the cement(水泥) used to bind concrete could lessen its massive environmental effect by a third. Production of cement reportedly gives off as much as 8% human-made carbon dioxide every year.(据《自然》杂志报道,在用于粘结混凝土的水泥中,只要含有0.1%的石墨烯,就能将其对环境的巨大影响降低三分之一。据报道,水泥生产每年释放出高达8%的人为二氧化碳。)” 可知,闪蒸石墨烯以食物和塑料垃圾为原料,且可减少建筑行业的水泥需求,这说明了:闪蒸石墨烯在缓解全球变暖有大潜力。故选C项。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。 根据最后一段“ The problem with the flash process at the current stage is: The researchers could only make about a picogram of graphene, an extremely small amount of graphene that might be suitable for electronics. Tour hopes to produce a kilogram a day of flash graphene within two years, starting with a project recently funded by the Department of Energy to change U.S.-sourced coal.(目前闪蒸工艺的问题是:研究人员只能制造出大约一微克的石墨烯,这是极少量的石墨烯,可能适用于电子产品。Tour希望在两年内每天生产1公斤的闪蒸石墨烯,这是从能源部最近资助的一个项目开始的,该项目旨在改变源自美国的煤炭。)”可知,研究人员在接下来的2年里将会致力于增加这种闪蒸石墨烯的产出。故选B项。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。 由第一段“That banana peel from your lunch, turned into graphene(石墨烯), a valuable material in electronics and many other fields, could bring a massive reduction of the enironmental effect of concrete(混凝土) and other building materials.(你午餐吃的香蕉皮,可以转化为石墨烯,一种在电子和许多其他领域有价值的材料,可以大大降低混凝土和其他建筑材料对环境的影响。)”

35. Who will probably be most interested in the finding of the new study?
A. The researchers. B. Music teachers.
C. Finnish students. D. School administrators.
【答案】32. A 33. B 34. A 35. D

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Shopping online is quite popular in our daily life now.
It is a new way of shopping as opposed to traditional shopping. One of the most obvious strengths of online shopping is its convenience. All kinds of things are offered on various apps for us to choose from. Unlike the shops on the street which have opening hours, we can buy anything we like at any time with a cell phone at hand.
However, there are many disadvantages about shopping online. We can’t actually see the real products. So we may be cheated easily. Also, many people will miss the best opportunity to go out with their friends and share the joy of shopping.
To sum up, in my opinion, online shopping should never fully take the place of traditional shopping, and we should make proper use of online shopping.

注意:
1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。
Instead of burying myself in my phone, I focused on something else: my surroundings.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next four days passed in a flash with many fun activities.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Instead of burying myself in my phone, l focused on something else: my surroundings. I let the noise of the wilderness wash over me, animals and bugs creating a ruckus that was both loud and serene at the same time. My anger turned to peace, then little interest and, finally, excitement. Standing on the high campsite, I felt the weight of stress melt from my shoulders as I viewed the vast expanse that unfolded below me. The sight that met my startled eyes nearly took my breath away. For the first time, I thought camping in a place that had no cell service might not be so bad.
The next four days passed in a flash with many fun activities. I hiked. I swam. I fished. My dad and I learned how to start a fire together after several false starts. We cooked together and I ate the sweetest marshmallows I had ever tasted. Dad told me stories of his life, stories I had never heard or perhaps I hadn’t been listening. When the weekend came to an end, I realized I hadn’t thought of my phone once. I hadn’t felt the need to be connected to anywhere else. It dawned on me that what mattered most were the moments I was sharing with just my father and nature.
