The Fire Festival is celebrated in northern Ghana. It’s a holiday we had never heard of before we came to live in a village here as Peace Corps community volunteers. It’s unbelievably great. On the Fire Festival — Bugim Chug u in the local language — drums beat a quick and regular rhythm that locals dance to in a circle of bodies, men and women, the old and young, holding torches of burning grass above their heads, which stands for the light and getting off negative energies. At this moment, this festival is being held at the beginning of the lunar year. The locals are all so involved in the celebration that they don’t pay as much attention to us as they normally will. When they find us getting involved as they are, they dance more vigorously and scream with joy. Danielle, a friend of mine in the Peace Corps, says, “That we join in the celebration is significant because foreigners here are typically seen as the representatives of other organizations, not as people who are willing to join in the Fire Festival rituals (仪式). But in fact, we are dancing and celebrating as one.” Our two-year Peace Corps service will finish up in mid-November. We can think of no better way to say goodbye than by celebrating the Fire Festival with the villagers we’ve come to know. The festival lets us see a different side of them — and lets them see a different side of us. The neighbors who sell rice are now the women who urge us to run faster and dance harder at the Fire Festival. And rather than view us as low-key (低调的) volunteers, they see us as the ones who have crazy dance steps with wild screams. 4. Why did the author go to northern Ghana? A. To find a job. B. To go traveling. C. To study further. D. To do voluntary work. 5. How do the locals feel when seeing the author and Danielle join in the celebration? A. Annoyed. B. Excited. C. Confused. D. Worried. 6. What is the last paragraph mainly about? A. The steps to dance well. B. How the locals celebrate the Fire Festival. C. How the author and Danielle help the locals sell rice. D. The reason why the author and Danielle joined in the festival. 7. What can we learn from the text? A. Practice makes perfect. B. Where there is a will, there is a way. C. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. D. The grass is always greener on the other side. Harvesting fruit is a very precise operation. The fruit must be picked when it is perfectly ripe. But with pickers in short supply in recent years, growers needed to quickly find another way to harvest their crops. Tevel Aerobotics Technologies came to the farmers’ rescue with the Flying Autonomous Robots (FARs) that can help pick fruit. “Not finding enough fruit pickers is every farmer’s biggest concern,” Yaniv Maor, Tevel’s founder and CEO said. “Ask any farmer, anywhere in the world and they’ll tell you they don’t have the people. Food consumption is increasing, but labor availability is decreasing. If pickers are not available, fruit will go bad on the trees. The flying robots will work day and night in almost any weather, without taking a break, to pick as much ripe fruit as possible. Maor set up Tevel in 2017 and developed the technology after seeing young Israelis pick fruit and tired after a few hours. He realized that there had to be a better way, so he began developing the software and artificial intelligence (AI) that are needed for the smart robot pickers. “We have to teach the robot about each fruit, the branches, the leaves, how to access the fruit and how to rotate (转动) it and disconnect it from the tree,” Maor said. The flying robots circle round trees and pick only the ripe ones with a twist (扭动) of their integrated grasper arms. The robots are fitted with cameras that use AI to assess the size and color of the fruit so that only the ripe pieces are picked. The cameras also ensure that the robots’ paths are not blocked. The robots are currently picking Asian pears in Israel. In 2022, the FARs were used in pilot programs in Italy to pick peaches and other fruits, as well as in the US. They are not a replacement for labor, instead, they are a solution for the inadequate human pickers. In the future fewer people will work in picking and more will work in managing the robots, analyzing the data and making decisions. 8. What is Tevel Aerobotics Technologies? A. A robot. B. A programme. C. A company. D. An exhibition. 9. Why are FARs used according to Maor? A. To save labor and reduce costs. B. To avoid the loss of fruit. C. To speed up the picking process. D. To meet the shortage of labor. 10. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about? A. How the robots work. B. What the robots consist of. C. Why the robots are useful. D. Where the robots are used. 11. What is the author’s attitude towards humans’future role? A. Doubtful. B. Positive. C. Worried. D. Unclear. There are a growing number of pet owners who feed their pets on raw foods, which means “uncooked” meat and bones. William Burk, a pet food specialist from the Food and Drug Administration(FDA), believes that feeding raw meat to pets is against its goal of protecting the public from health dangers, and that raw meat and bones do not have all the required nutrition that a pet needs every day. Recognizing how popular these foods are, the FDA has provided guidelines for producers of pet foods which contain uncooked meat for dogs, cats and other pets. The guidelines give rules to protect pet owners and pets from dangers about food safety and lack of nutrition. Pet owners who feed raw meat and bones to their pets should deal with these products very carefully to protect themselves against possible dangers says Burk. Just as when you are preparing foods for human beings, use hot water and soap to wash your hands, containers, and surfaces that come into contact with the food. Don’t put your hands near your mouth until you have washed them, and don’t allow your pet to touch your face right after it has eaten raw meat. “If pet owners choose to feed bones to their pets, they should watch their pets carefully when they are eating bones,” Burk says, “If a pet eats a big piece of bone that won’t pass through its digestive system(消化系统), it is likely to kill the pet.” 12. What does William Burk think of feeding pets on raw meat? A. It’ll make the pet owners sick. B. It’ll keep the pets’ wild nature. C. It’s against the policy of the FDA. D. It’s dangerous and lack of nutrition. 13. The FDA has provided guidelines for producers of pet foods with raw meat because ________. A. pet safety is a serious problem B. most pets lack nutrition C. feeding pets on raw foods is popular D. the quality of pet foods is dropping 14. Those who feed pets on raw foods should do some necessary cleaning when ________. A. preparing raw meat for pets B. touching the food containers C. taking their pets out for a walk D. preparing foods for human beings 15. What suggestion is given to pet owners in the last paragraph? A. Pets should be forbidden to eat raw bones. B. Pets should be kept away from the raw meat. C. Pets should be checked on their digestive system. D. Pets should be watched carefully while eating bones. 二、七选五(本大题共5小题,共10分) When people look at mountains, they often feel a desire to climb to the top. We’ll need about twenty more seedlings.” “I’ll get the seedlings.” offered Rebecca. She longed to cool her feet in the shallow river running through the cotton field. “You’d better let me go, Miss Petticoats,” teased her twin brother, William. “There are dangers all over this prairie(牧场/草原)“You may both go,” said Pa. “But hurry back. I’d like to finish before sundown.” They went across the shallow river to a sandbar where small cottonwood seedlings grew.Gently, they pulled the seedlings from the sand.“There! That’s twenty, with a few to spare.” said Rebecca.“OK,” said William. He led the way to the riverbank, then stopped. “Look! There’s the dugout(防空壕)we lived in when we moved here last year.” He pointed to a hole in the grassy river bank. “Come on let’s go inside.” “No,” Rebecca said, “Pa is waiting. Besides, it’s hard telling what’s in there.” “Then you start back.” said William, handing the seedlings to Rebecca. I’ll catch up.” He ran to the dugout and stepped inside. Rebecca tied the seedlings into her long apron(围裙)and began to walk. Suddenly she froze in her tracks.A huge prairie rattlesnake(响尾蛇)moved along the river bank.It stopped right in front of the dugout and lay still, coiled up on the warm sunny bank.“William!” Rebecca shouted. “Don’t come out!” “Huh?” Williams face appeared at a tiny window beside the door of the dugout. Rebecca pointed toward the rattler. William's face paled when he saw the snake blocking the doorway. He turned desperate eyes toward Rebecca, then he glanced behind himself. Rebecca knew what he was thinking: “Were there more snakes waiting in the shadowy corners of the dugout?” Rebecca’s mind raced, trying to think of a way to get William out of there. An idea popped into her head. It was their only hope. It was risky, but it was the only hope.“Don’t move,” she said to William in a soft voice. “When I say NOW, you run out of there as fast as you can.”Rebecca removed the skirt-like petticoat(衬裙)from beneath her dress, then dipped it into the river. William Burk, a pet food specialist from the Food and Drug Administration(FDA), believes that feeding raw meat to pets is against its goal of protecting the public from health dangers, and that raw meat and bones do not have all the required nutrition that a pet needs every day. The guidelines give rules to protect pet owners and pets from dangers about food safety and lack of nutrition. Pet owners who feed raw meat and bones to their pets should deal with these products very carefully to protect themselves against possible dangers, says Burk. She squeezed out some of the water, then climbed to the top of the bank, directly above the dugout’s opening. 注意: 1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右; 2.至少使用5个短文中标有下划线的关键词语; 3.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好; 4.续写完成后,请用下划线标出你所使用的关键词语。 Paragraph 1:“Get ready to run, William,” she said, keeping an eye on the motionless snake. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Are you OK?he asked, breathing heavily. Rebecca nodded. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Paragraph 1:“Get ready to run, William, ” she said, keeping an eye on the motionless snake. Rebecca opened the dripping petticoat(wet through with water)as much as she could. Her hands shook as she leaned over the bank. With one swift movement, she dropped the heavy garment on top of the rattlesnake.“NOW!” she shouted to William as the snake began to move under the petticoat. William jumped over the covered snake and ran fast before he stopped and turned around. Rebecca was right behind him. Paragraph 2:“Are you OK?” he asked, breathing heavily. Rebecca nodded. She was glad they managed to escape. It took them five minutes to catch their breath and calm themselves down. Rebecca checked to make sure that the seedlings were still complete. Then William gave Rebecca a grateful hug. “Thanks, sister. I’d have done the same for you back there.” Rebecca said with a grin. “You couldn’t have, for you don’t wear petticoats!” Laughing, they raced back to the woods. 3.词类激活: 行为类: 盯着:keep an eye on/stare at/watch/clap eyes on 对……大喊:shout at/yell at/exclaim to 平静下来:calm sb. down/collect sb. 情绪类: 高兴的:glad/happy/overjoyed/cheerful/delighted 感激的:grateful/appreciative/thankful 【点睛】【高分句型1】 Laughing, they raced back to the woods.(这句话使用了现在分词做伴随状语。) 【高分句型2】 “NOW!”she shouted to William as the snake began to move under the petticoat.(这句话使用了as引导的时间状语从句。) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
