The Great Wall of China is one of the greatest wonders of the world. It runs across North China like a huge dragon. It winds its way from west to east, across deserts, over mountains, through valleys, till finally it reaches the sea.
It has a history of more than 2,000 years. The major renovations (修复) of the Great Wall took place in the Qin, Han and Ming dynasties. Most of the Great Wall we see today was rebuilt in the Ming Dynasty. It is more than 8,000 kilometers long, about 6-7 meters high and 4-5 meters wide. In most places it has enough room for five horses or ten men to walk side by side along the top. It has great gateways which connect the main roads of North China.
The hardships involved in building the Great Wall are beyond imagination. Lots of people had to leave their homes and family. They worked hard. Many died because of hard work. Of the many legends about the Great Wall, the story of Mengjiangnv is the most moving. After her husband went to build the Great Wall, she expected to see him so much that she traveled many miles to see him. However, a man told her that her husband had died and been buried under the wall. After hearing that, Mengjiangnv cried for three days and nights. At last, the Great Wall fell down.
Over the centuries, the Great Wall has become a symbol of unity (团结) and strength for the Chinese people. It symbolizes that great achievement can be made by people. For example, the national anthem (国歌) calls on the people to "build our new Great Wall with our flesh and blood". We all know that nothing is impossible, if we put our whole heart into it.

In China, writing brushes, ink sticks, paper and ink stones are called the Four Treasures of Study. Among the high-quality (高质量的) treasures, the writing brush produced in Huzhou, the ink stick produced in Huizhou, the xuan paper made in Xuancheng and the ink stone made in Duanxi are the best-known.
The writing brushes can be used to draw pictures on painted pottery (陶器). They are mainly made of the hair of animals. Those made of wool are called yanghao and those made of the weasel's (黄鼠狼) tail hair are called langhao. Their artistic effects (效果) in writing and painting cannot be copied by any other pens.
The ink stick is the pigment (颜料) used in writing and painting. The ink stick produced in Huizhou is of high quality. A story goes like this: Two famous skilled men Xi Chao and his son produced a kind of high-quality ink stick. As a result, the Emperor Li Yu in the Southern Tang Dynasty agreed to give them the family name "Li". From then on, the fame of the Li Ink Stick was widespread. In the Song Dynasty, its producing area was changed into Huizhou, and it was then called the Hui Ink Stick.
Paper is among the four great inventions in ancient China. The famous xuan paper appeared in the Sui and Tang dynasties. In Xuanzhou, Anhui Province where the xuan paper is produced, it's said that Cai Lun's pupil Kong Dan took the job of producing paper but failed to make perfect white paper. Later he happened to see the ebony (檀木) in the rivers. It was wet with the water and turned white. Then he used the bark (树皮) to produce the world-famous xuan paper.
The ink stone was already very popular in the Han Dynasty. The Ming and Qing dynasties saw the appearance of the Four Famous Ink Stones — Duan Ink Stone, She Ink Stone, Tao Ink Stone and Chengni Ink Stone. They can be used not only for writing and painting but also for admiration.

原创题 A simple badge(徽章) is playing an important role in helping lost old people return home. By scanning a QR code(二维码) on the plastic badge, anyone with a smartphone can reach the old people's family immediately.
The idea came to Li and his workmates five years ago when the 44-member police station dealt with more than 200 lost old people in a year.
The officers spent hours trying to figure out how to contact with the lost old people's family from their vague(模糊的) descriptions. In some cases, the lost old people had to stay overnight at the station before their family was contacted.
"Taking a walk is never easy for the old," Li said. "They can't tell their identities(身份), addresses or phone numbers, and most of them get lost frequently(频繁地)." The old people will have to face many difficulties, such as hunger, cold and even death, if they fail to get help in time. Li and his workmates developed the idea of a QR code with contact information after two months of trials(试用). The number of lost old people has dropped to around 30 a year since the QR code was introduced.
More than 50,000 badges have been distributed(分发) for free, with about half of them for people in other parts of the country. "I am very interested in this invention because many people in my area are elderly," said Zhang Peng, head of the Hongmiaozi police station in Urumqi, Xinjiang. Zhang has ordered more than 100 badges. "For those who know how to use them, they just help the lost old people get in touch with their family. Or we can scan the QR code and do the rest," he said.
