Like many other parents, I, too , often thought that there must either be something wrong with me , or something deeply wrong with my teenagers when they suddenly wanted to avoid everyone in the house and the outside world. What I didn't know was that looking for solitude (独处) and privacy was perfectly normal for teenagers, and while you may think their wish for solitude is worrying, what is really happening is actually mentally(精神上)necessary. A recent study in the Journal of Adolescence looked at a lot of possible causes of a teenager's strong wish and need for solitude. What they found can make parents less worried about the troubling but actually helpful behavior. Researchers believe wanting and needing to be alone is just a matter of personal choice for teenagers , and that if that choice is out of their will, there is nothing to worry about. “Solitude has always been seen as something detrimental to mental health , especially for teenagers who are thought to be unsociable or lonely.”says Margarita Azmitia, professor of psychology at UC Santa Cruz and co-author of the study. She continues, “However, sometimes solitude can help teenagers deal with mental problems. Developmentally, learning to be alone is a skill, and it can make them refreshed and energetic(精力充沛的).” So when should parents get worried? Researchers have found if a teenager is forced to stay in his bedroom as a punishment or something, then this kind of solitude will cause problems. But when a teenager has chosen on his own to check out his life, so to speak, it serves as a much-needed break from the noise of life. In those cases , self-chosen solitude can provide a chance for self-examination or creative expression, So communication matters between teenagers and parents. ( )1. What did the author think about her teenagers’ staying in their rooms in the past? A.She was very worried about it. B. She thought it was mentally necessary. C. She thought it was perfectly normal. D.She really didn't care about it. ( )2. What can we know from the finding of the Journal of Adolescence? A.Parents"worry is totally wrong. B.Choosing to be alone sometimes can be helpful. C.The behavior of solitude is unnecessary for mental health. D.Teenagers’ solitude has nothing to do with personal choice. ( )3. What is the meaning of the underlined word " detrimental" in Paragraph 5 ? A. Familiar. B.New. C. Harmful. D.Similar. ( )4.What can we learn from the last paragraph? A. Many teenagers want solitude. B. Forced solitude should be avoided. C. Parents should not punish their teenagers. D. Teenagers should communicate with their parents. B Some students get so nervous before a test. They do poorly even if they know the material. Sian Beilock, a professor at the University of Chicago in Illinois, has studied these highly anxious test-takers. The students start worrying about the results. And when we worry, it actually uses up attention and memory resources. Professor Beilock and another researcher, Gerardo Ramirez, have developed a possible solution. Just before an exam, highly anxious test-takers spend ten minutes writing about their worries about the test. The researchers tested the idea on a group of twenty anxious college students. They gave them two short math tests. After the first one, they asked the students to either sit quietly or write about their feelings about the upcoming second test. Professor Beilock says those who sat quietly scored an average of 12% worse on the second test. But the students who had written about their fears improved their performance by an average of 5%. Next, the researchers used younger students in a biology class. They told them before final exams either to write about their feelings or to think about things unrelated to the test. Professor Beilock says highly anxious students who did the writing got an average grade of B⁺, compared to a B⁻ for those who did not. “What we showed is that for students who are highly test-anxious, who'd done our writing intervention (干预), all of a sudden there was no relationship between test fear and performance. They were performing just as well as their classmates who don't normally get nervous in these tests.” But what if students do not have a chance to write about their fears immediately before an exam? Professor Beilock says students can try it themselves at home or in the library and still improve their performance. ( )5.What do the students start worrying about before an exam? A.Whether they can pass the exam. B.What other students do during the test. C.Whether they have remembered the materials. D.What kind of problems they will meet on the test paper. ( )6.What is the solution developed by researchers? A.Making the students focused on the test. B.Asking the students to sit quietly before the test. C.Having the students write about their worries about the test. D.Asking the students to direct the attention away from the test. ( )7.According to Professor Beilock, those who thought about things unrelated to the test ________. A.became less nervous before the test B.did worse than those who wrote about their feelings C.were better at controlling their feelings D.did better than those who wrote about their feelings ( )8.We can infer from the last paragraph that ________. A.writing about our worries before an exam can work a bit B.we can only write about our worries right before an exam C.the best place to write about our worries is in the test room before an exam D.it doesn’t matter where and when we write about our worries before an exam C  There’s nothing like having a best friend forever — that person who you can have fun with and talk to. July 30 is the International Day of Friendship. Maybe you can keep an eye out for a new friend to get to know. And while we’re talking about friends, don’t think humans are the only ones who know a thing or two about friendship. Check out these friendly animals in nature who help each other out. An elephant and an olive baboon (东非狒狒) can be friends? It sounds strange, but it’s true. You can find this pair of friends in the grasslands of Africa. This unusual pair helps each other out like any good friends would. The elephant uses its front teeth to make a waterhole in the sand, and it lets the olive baboon have a drink from this “well” when it gets thirsty. In return, the baboon tells the elephant when danger is near. It climbs up to the treetops and calls out so its friend knows that it’s time to move on. In the sea world, the goby fish and the shrimp (虾虎鱼和虾) are well-known for their friendship. While the shrimp provides a home for the goby fish, the goby fish provides a guidance service for the almost blind shrimp. You see, the goby has great eyesight (视力) and stays close to the shrimp. As the shrimp moves around, the shrimp is feeling the goby with its antenna (须) from time to time to make sure it’s still there. If the goby senses danger, she will return to the home and the shrimp will follow. The langur monkey has a very good friendship with the chital deer (花鹿). While the langur monkey eats in a tree, it drops leaves to the ground. This is good for the deer because sometimes there’s not much food. The deer will follow the monkey and eat whatever food is dropped. And in return, when the monkey comes down from the tree, the deer will put its foot down heavily to tell the monkey if it senses danger. ( )9. How can an elephant help an olive baboon? A. By providing water.       B. By providing a home. C. By providing protection.    D. By providing information. ( )10. What does a shrimp do when moving around in the sea? A. It stays close to the goby fish.        B. It goes home from time to time. C. It uses its antenna for directions.     D. It never swims far from its home. ( )11. What do the olive baboon and the chital deer have in common? A. They live together with their friends. B. They warn their friends of danger. C. They have a good sense of smell. D. They have good eyesight. ( )12. What would be the best title for the text? A. Best friends forever        B. Love me, love my dog C. Friendships in the animal world D. The International Day of Friendship D After finishing my teaching for a school year, I thought that I should go back to Montreal,Quebec, my hometown for a visit. My main goal was to relax thinking about in advance the challenges of my retirement in the coming year. Through my stay in Montreal, I met lots of Chinese who are struggling to succeed and then lead a better life in Canada. Some travelled thousands of miles to get knowledge. When I spoke with some of them about the major barrier (障碍)they had to face after they arrived in Canada, they all talked about the two official languages of Canada. But I was impressed by their ability to express their ideas while switching between English and French. Almost all of those people said they often felt homesick. They miss their families and friends. Though Montreal has lots of Chinese restaurants, they long for a homecooked meal. I met some tourists who were trying to realize their childhood dreams of experiencing the life in a developed country. When I asked them if Montreal had lived up to their expectations, they hesitated. They said that reality never agrees with fantasies. However, they were glad to have the opportunity to visit Montreal and didn't regret taking the trip. Not all the Chinese people I met were happy. I once met a young lady who met with a gentleman through the Internet. However,to her disappointment,he disappeared after he promised to marry her in Montreal. I was served by another Chinese person who could not handle the challenges of studying in an English environment and ended up working in a restaurant with minimum pay. Exploring different parts of the world, without any doubt, is an enriching experience. However, one should be realistic when it comes to leaving his hometown to set up a new life in a foreign country. One should take the time to examine the advantages and the shortcomings of the venture before they decide to chase an uncertain dream of achieving success or leading a better life. ( )13.Why did the writer go to her hometown ? A. To meet her old friends. B. To study a new language. C. To go on with her teaching. D. To prepare for her retirement life. ( )14. What is the main barrier for some Chinese to get knowledge in Canada? A. food B. homesickness C. language D. income ( )15. What can we learn about the writer’s idea? A. People should think carefully before chasing the dreams abroad. ( )16.What is the best title for the passage? A. Improving Life Skills in Canada B. Exploring Different Parts of Canada C.
