Ray Tokuda, a 54-year-old Japanese- American, is proud of the title his school has given him. He is a Shifu, a Chinese word meaning a master of martial arts (武术).
Tokuda has reason to be proud. He has been involved with Chinese martial arts for almost forty years. After learning them at the martial arts school in New Mexico State, today he is among the most experienced kung fu teachers of the school.
Practicing martial arts two to three hours and helping students improve their skills have become Tokuda’s daily routine. He expects to practice and teach martial arts for the rest of his life. “I’m still learning. It’s worth more than a lifetime to learn Chinese martial arts,” he said. “Once I started, I just couldn’t stop. I think it’s also the magic of Chinese culture.”
Tokuda was sent to the martial arts school when he was 10. He still remembers how unwilling he was when starting out. “My father had always wanted to learn Chinese martial arts but he never got the chance, so he wanted his kid to learn it,” he said. “I was so afraid at that time because I thought kung fu was all about fighting.”
But things changed after he learned that martial arts were more than punching and kicking.
“One of the things martial arts teach me is overcoming difficulties,” Tokuda said. “As a little kid, my first lesson was like, oh, look, this is a thing that I can get through by hard work and perseverance (毅力), and that was priceless for my life.”
Learning Chinese martial arts opened a gateway for him to better understand Chinese culture because he could hear a lot of ancient Chinese kung fu-related stories. He said, “I feel martial arts preserve something of ancient China that can’t be found in books. They are sort of an oral history.”
Tokuda has also been invited to various events in his home state to show traditional Chinese culture, including the dragon dance and lion dance, which he also learnt at the martial arts school. Because of this, he is now considered a cultural envoy (使者) in the eyes of the public.
24.Tokuda refused to learn kung fu at first because he had thought it was ________.
A.violent B.magical C.practical D.difficult
25.Why was Tokuda sent to learn Chinese martial arts?

B.He wanted to be a martial arts master.
C.His father had wanted to learn but could not.
D.His parents wanted to better understand Chinese culture.
26.From the passage, what can we learn about Tokuda?
A.He learnt martial arts from his father.
B.He is the founder of the kung fu school.
C.He learnt from martial arts how to deal with difficulties
D.He is the most experienced kung fu teacher of his state.
27.Which of the following words can best describe Tokuda?
A.Outgoing and friendly. B.Talented and humorous.
C.Responsible and confident. D.Determined and hard-working.

Many of the earth’s creatures die because of humans’ choices. These choices have nothing to do with food or shelter or anything else that helps humans survive. What kills millions of animals all over the world is that humans want to make money by doing so.
People use parts of animals for everything from hats to handbags, from jewelry to ashtrays and to make powder that supposedly improves a person’s life. Deciding that a species is endangered and protecting it by law are not always enough. People who kill wildlife illegally rarely get caught.
During the late 1980s, saving elephants became a popular cause. Wildlife protection groups tried to make people see pictures or films of elephants with their faces cut off for their ivory. These groups also proved that certain populations of elephants were decreasing. As a result, most people stopped buying objects made of ivory. Laws against poaching (偷猎) were made stricter. Many countries made importing ivory illegal. Killing elephants for their ivory became riskier and less profitable.
However, concern for certain species will become weak after a while. In the late 1970s, people protested (抗议) against the killing of seal babies. People were shocked to see young seals being killed in their icy habitats. The cruel activity stopped. But ten years later, the number of seal babies killed was higher than ever.
Other animal protection movements have come and gone, such as saving the whales and protecting dolphins. The whale population appears to have increased for now. And the laws are finally changed in America to protect the dolphins that swim with tuna fish in parts of the Pacific Ocean.
In years to come, people’s attention will probably tum to some other endangered species. Plenty of them urgently need attention. During this time, will the elephants be forgotten?
28.What leads to the disappearance of millions of wild animals?
A.Humans’ need for wild food. B.The growing human population.
C.Lack of laws on wildlife protection. D.Humans’ desire for making a fortune.
29.What happened in the late 1980s?
A.Hunting was completely not allowed. B.Those who killed elephants all got caught.
C.Importing ivory in all countries was illegal. D.Wildlife protection groups did make great efforts
30.Why are seal babies mentioned in Paragraph 4?
A.To show the effort to protect seal babies.
B.To show an increasing number of seal babies.
C.To show the decrease of worries about certain species.
D.To show people’s protest against the killing of seal babies.
31.What does the author mean by using the underlined sentence?
A.Humans should choose some rare animals to protect.
B.Attention must be paid to saving some endangered wildlife.
C.Success has been achieved in quite a few cases of wildlife protection.
D.Concern and movements for animal protection should be always kept.
D
In the 21st century, we’ve seen some new technologies. Innovations really come to our homes. One example is the electric vehicle (EV), which is considered a promising solution for future green transportation. While the battery charging time of EVs is getting better every year, many people still prefer petrol vehicles, mostly because they don’t want to spend time waiting until the batteries are fully charged.
The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has decided to handle that problem by burying electrified wire coils (线圈) that create a magnetic field (磁场) along the road surface. In order to use the roads, cars will be fitted with a receiver coil to pick up the charge as they go along, and become magnetized, drawing electricity from the coils themselves. Indiana could be the first state in the U.S. to have a wireless charging road that tops up electric vehicles as people drive along it.
Expected to take three phases, the work will begin in late summer, according to a statement from the contracted German firm in charge of designing and building the road, Magment. “This project is a real step forward towards the future of dynamic wireless charging,” said Mauricio Esguerra, CEO of Magment. “And that will undoubtedly set the standard for affordable, sustainable, and efficient transportation electrification.” It’s the first such electrified charging road in the U.S., and researchers in this field estimate that it would be 5-10 years before such technology would be available.
In fact, Sweden already had electric rails on some highways that allow the largest vehicles on the highway to charge by way of an electric arm on their undercarriages (底盘) that draws power from the rails. Volkswagen has rolled out its prototype (原型) of a charging road between the Italian cities of Brescia and Milan. Siemens is trying to build a structure of cables and wires that is similar to electric rails above a three-mile stretch of road outside Frankfurt that will allow cars to charge along it. It won’t be long before one of these projects is widely carried out, and motoring is once again changed forever.
32.What’s the major limiting factor behind the purchase of an EV?
A.Limited charging stations. B.Poor driving experiences.
C.Battery charging issues. D.The high price.
33.What do we know about the road project in Indiana?
A.It can help reduce transportation fees. B.In has received recognition from drivers.
C.It aims to make EVs get charged in motion. D.It provides more charging stations for EVs.
34.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A.The advantages of charging roads. B.The potential market for electric rails.
C.The latest models of electric vehicles. D.The achievements related to charging roads.
35.What’s the purpose of the text?
A.To announce the development of INDOT. B.To introduce a technological invention.
C.To call on people to buy EVs. D.To appeal for green transportation.

If staying optimistic (乐观) is something you struggle with, you`re certainly not alone. Here are five ways you can frequently practice to be optimistic.
Be present every day
The majority of negative thoughts are about the past and future, which can`t be changed. To be present, you need to exactly figure out whether they are in the past, present or future and bring them back into the moment. 36
Give thanks
The thoughts of giving thanks can help improve your body functions and overall happiness. Start by writing down at least three things you`re thankful for each day. 37 This practice could transform into a formal habit of recalling things you`re grateful for and writing them down. Laugh out loud
Laughter really is fantastic medicine. Loud laughs can calm the brain`s stress center. Watch one of your favorite TV plays or even try laughter yoga. It might be a good choice to reach out to others for help to laugh out loud. 38 It can help lift your mood during difficult times.
39
Acts of kindness can increase your sense of well-being. Even something as simple as giving someone a smile can leave you both feeling happier. Challenge yourself to do at least one kind thing for someone else each day, such as buying a stranger a cup of coffee or donating to a cause that matters to you. Find time to exercise
Exercise produces pleasurable brain chemicals and relieves bad emotions. When you participate in physical activities that bring you joy, your thinking will clear. If it’s hard to find time to get to the gym, there are many exercise videos you can follow online. 40 Then you’ll likely feel more positive afterward.
A.Pay it forward.
B.Acquire spiritual strength.
C.Try to focus on what’s in front of you.
D.The main goal is to break a sweat and do it regularly.
E.It’s unavoidable to feel unhappy with ups and downs all the time.
F.Doing that helps you recognize the little good things surrounding you.
G.Having a positive network of friends or family can really make a difference.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was an early winter morning. Joan was sleeping soundly when the phone rang in the living room. She rolled over and glanced at the clock on the wall—it was already nine o’clock. Every weekend morning, her mother had to work part-time in the cafe. Although Joan was still sleepy, she knew she had to get up. After all, she didn’t expect her brother Mike, who was sleeping like a log, to hear the phone. She quietly went over to the living room. When she picked up the receiver, on the other end came the warmhearted greetings, “Good morning, my Dear!” Recognizing the voice from her father, Joan was immediately surrounded by a sense of joy and the sleepiness swept away.
Joan’s father was a seaman, who rarely came back. Working on the sea was really hard. Born in a not-rich family, Joan and Mike felt the stress of life but they were happy to enjoy the family atmosphere.
“Good morning, Dad, what’s up?” Joan said in an easy tone. “I have been very nice recently, my baby. Today is your mother’s birthday, and I have ordered her a cake online and it should come to the house in one and half an hour. Do remember to take the cake.”
Hearing her father’s words, Joan felt a little ashamed. How she could forget Mum’s birthday! She took a glance at the dirty clothes piled on the sofa and the oily floor that hadn’t been mopped (拖地) for a few days—There was two hours before her mother came back. She calculated they had enough time to prepare a surprise for Mum.
Thinking of this, she felt full of excitement. “Well, Dad, now I’m going to wake Mike up. We will give Mum a surprise!”
Joan hung up the phone with Dad, and hurriedly went to Mike’s room to share him her Big Cleaning plan. After listening to Joan, Mike readily accepted her idea.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

But one company in the US is going to make your traditional wallets cool again, by bringing them into the digital age. Armenian firm Volterman’s Smart Wallet takes security to a new level. It’s fitted with different technology. In a smart wallet, there is an alarm, a GPS tracker, and even a camera. If your phone and wallet become separated, the alarm will warn you so that you don’t leave it behind. And if your wallet is lost or stolen, the GPS tracker can help you reach it. But perhaps the most unusual feature of the Volterman Smart Wallet is the built-in front-facing camera. “If someone dares to open your wallet without your permission, the little camera will take a picture and send it to your mobile phone,” the founder said. Once your wallet is stolen, you will find it easily by receiving the picture of the thief. The Volterman is really the world’s most powerful smart wallet. It’s also lightweight and thin, making it perfect for travel. No more international roaming charges (漫游费). Also, it works wirelessly. The high-tech wallet comes in three models, with the cheapest cost expected to be $169.

阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

【答案】
The Big Cleaning plan began. Joan collected the clothes from sofa and then put them in the water of a basin. After pouring in some washing liquids, she began to wash them by hand. Realizing the clothes were clean enough, Joan gently squeezed water out and hung them to dry. Meanwhile, Mike was busy mopping the floor back and forth with all his strength, really aware of what hard work his Mum had at home! They had just finished the cleaning when the express boy came to the door.
With the cake placed on the table, Mum came in. “Happy birthday, Mum!”, they greeted in chorus. Confused and surprised, Mum stood frozen. When Mum realized what had happened, a warm current rose in her heart. Staring at the clean floor and the washed clothes, she could hardly contain her excitement and hugged them tightly, “It is the best birthday gift I have ever had!” Mum said emotionally. Just then Joan took out her smartphone and took a happy video named Mum’s Birthday and sent it to Dad.
