My First Day of School
Fear started taking over, I was walking into my first school in America. I had traveled a long distance from India in order to join my parents, who had been for three years, hoping America would help my future. My father decided that I would be better off going to school here, so I enrolled(登记)in the local high school in my new town.
I was afraid how I would do. On the first day I went to my second period class after I had missed my first. With anxiety, I reached for the door, opening it slowly. Without paying attention to my classmates, I went straight to the teacher and asked if this was the right class. With a soft voice he answered. “Yes.” His voice comforted me a little. He gave me a sheet called Course Requirements, which I would never get in India because we didn’t have anything like that. Then he asked me to choose where I would sit. I didn’t actually want to pick a seat. In India we had fixed seats, so I never needed to worry about that. I spent the rest of the class taking notes from the image produced by the overhead projector. In Indian schools, we didn’t use the technology we had. We had to take notes as the teacher spoke.
It was noon. I was very confused about when I would have lunch. I went to my next class and the bell rang as I entered. I went through the regular process of asking the teacher if I was in the right class. She said, “It’s still fourth period.”
“But the bell just rang,” I said.
Changing from a gentle tone to a harsher(刺耳的)one, she said, “That is the lunch bell, young man.”
I apologized. Without another word I headed for the cafeteria. I felt lucky because we didn’t have this in India. Every confusion seemed like a barrier I had to get through to reach my goal. At the end of the day, I was on my way to the bus which we didn’t have in India either. I spotted my bus and sat down inside happily. I was thinking, today wasn’t o bad.

When I was five or six years old, I remember watching TV and seeing other children suffer in other parts of the world. I would say to myself, “When I grow up, when I can get rich, I will save kids all over the world.”
At 17, I started my career here in America, and at the age of 18, I started my first charity organization. I went on to team up with other organizations in the following years, and met, helped, and even lost some of the most beautiful souls, from six-year-old Jasmina Anema who passed away in 2010 from leukemia(白血病), and whose story inspired thousands to volunteer as donors, to my grandmother who lost her battle against cancer in 2012. And her death is the very reason and the driving force behind the Clara Lionel Foundation(CLF). We’re all humans. And we all just want a chance: a chance of life, a chance of education, a chance of a future, really. And at the CLF, our mission is to impact as many lives as possible, but it starts with just one.
People make it seem too hard to do charity work. The truth is that you don’t have to be rich to help others. You don’t need to be famous. You don’t even have to be college-educated. But it can start with your neighbor, the person right next to you, the person sitting next to you in class, and the kid down the block in your neighborhood. You just do whatever you can to help in any way that you can. And today, I want to challenge each of you to make a decision to help one person, one organization, one situation that touches your heart. My grandmother used to say, “If you’ve got a dollar, there’s plenty to share.”
4. What did the author want to do at a young age?
A. Watch TV. B. Help other children.
C. Become wealthy. D. Grow up quickly.
5. What directly caused the author to create and develop the CLF?
A. A six-year-old kid’s request. B. Many volunteers inspiration.
C. Her grandmother’s death of cancer. D. Other organizations’ encouragement.
6. What does the underlined word “one” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. A chance. B. A life.
C. A task. D. An organization.
7. What does the author suggest people do in the last paragraph?
A. Challenge their friends to offer help.
B. Work hard to get a college education.
C. Do little things to help those around them.
D. Share everything they have.
C
Teenagers who spend more time on after-school activities and less than two hours of screen time after school are more mentally (心理上) healthy, according to a study published in the journal Preventive Medicine. The new study was carried out by researchers from the University of British Columbia.
The study used information collected from more than 28, 000 seventh-grade Canadian students between 2014 and 2018. The students first answered questions about their usage of screen time after school, including how much time they spent watching TV, Netflix or something else. Then, students reported how many days they had taken part in after-school activities such as sports or arts programmes. After that, researchers asked students to describe their state of mind. For example, when given a statement such as “I start most days thinking that I will have a good day”, they could choose to what level they agreed with it on a scale (等级).
Some of the results were expected, researchers said in the study. Students with no after-school activities usually had high levels of screen time, for example. And they expected girls would score higher on negative indicators (消极指标) of mental health, as earlier research had found that they tended to have higher levels of anxiety (焦虑) compared to boys.
What was noteworthy, researchers say, is that even among students who took part in after-school activities, 46% still went beyond the recommended screen time of two hours. At the same time, 67% of students who didn’t take part in after-school activities also had more than two hours of screen time. Together, this suggests high screen time among teenagers generally.
“The findings suggest that after-school activities are valuable for the happy growing of teenagers,” the study said. “While past studies have proved the importance of after-school activities for social and academic (学业的) development, the present study shows their importance for good mental health results.”
8. Which of the following came last when students took part in the new study?
A. Talking about their lifestyles. B. Introducing their after-school activities.
C. Reporting their mental states on a scale. D. Answering questions about screen time use.
9. What do the researchers find about teenage girls?
A. They often have higher levels of satisfaction.
B. Few of them take part in after-school activities.
C. Anxiety has become a serious problem among them.
D. Too much screen time may be more harmful to them.
10. What does the author want to show by using the numbers in paragraph 4?
A. Earlier findings about screen time are wrong.
B. High screen time is common among teenagers.
C. No after-school activities mean no screen time.
D. Screens attract teenagers more than after-school activities do.
11. Why are after-school activities so important according to the new study?
A. They are good for teenagers’ physical health.
B. They help to improve teenagers’ mental health.
C. They encourage teenagers’ social development.
D They allow teenagers to become better learners.
D
The idea of turning recycled plastic bottles into clothing is not new. During the past five years, a large number of clothing companies, businesses and environmental organizations have started turning plastics into clothing to deal with plastic pollution. But there’s a problem with this method. Research now shows that microfibers(微纤维)could be the biggest source of plastic in the sea.
Dr. Mark Browne in Santa Barbara, California, has been studying plastic pollution and microfibers for 10 years. He explains that every time synthetic(合成)clothes go into a washing machine, a large number of plastic fibers fall off. Most washing machines can’t collect these microfibers. So every time the water gets out of a washing machine, microfibers enter the sewer and finally end up in the sea.
In 2011, Browne wrote a paper stating that a single piece of synthetic clothing can produce more than 1,900 fibers per wash. Browne collected samples(样本)from seawater and freshwater sites around the world, and used a special way to examine each sample. He discovered that every single water sample contained microfibers.
This is bad news for a number of reasons. Plastic can cause harm to sea life when eaten. Studies have also shown that plastic can take in other pollutants.
Based on this evidence, it may seem surprising that companies and organizations have chosen to turn plastic waste into clothing as an environmental “solution”. Ever though the science has been around for a while, Browne explains that he’s had a difficult time getting companies to listen. When he asked well-known clothing companies to support “Benign by Design”, his research project, which is trying to get clothes that have a bad effect on humans and the environment out of the market, Browne didn’t get a satisfying answer. Only one woman’s clothing company, Eileen Fisher, offered Browne funding.
12. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A. New microfibers have been discovered.
B. Making clothes from plastic bottles can’t solve the pollution.
C. The use of plastic bottle has been reduced in the past five years.
D. Turning recycled plastic bottles into clothing hasn’t been put into practice.
13. What’s the main idea of the second paragraph?
A. How to wash synthetic clothes.
B. How to prevent plastic pollution.
C. How microfibers end up in the sea.
D. Relationship between synthetic clothes and microfibers.
14. How does Browne’s Benign by Design research project run?
A. It has achieved great success.
B. It is facing some difficulties.
C. It is supported by many firms.
D. It hasn’t got anything done.
15. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Recycled plastic clothing: solution or pollution?
B. The impact of Microfibers on the sea.
C. Environmental protection: moving forward or backward?
D. Turning plastic into clothing, a new step in environmental protection.

推理判断题。由第二段和第三段中的“He gave me a sheet called Course Requirements, which I would never get in India,I didn’t actually want to pick a seat. In India we had fixed seats,I spent the rest of the class taking notes from the image produced by the overhead projector. In Indian schools, we didn’t use the technology we had…I felt lucky because we didn’t have this in India”可知,作者在美国上学的第一天,遇到了很多和印度不一样的地方。例如:自己选择座位,课程安排等。故结合选项,D选项正确。

My father decided that I would be better off going to school here”可直接确定答案。

【答案】4. B 5. C 6. B 7. C

And her death is the very reason and the driving force behind the Clara Lionel Foundation(CLF).(在接下来的几年里,我继续与其他组织合作,结识、帮助甚至失去了一些最美丽的灵魂,从六岁的贾斯米娜·阿内玛,她于2010年因白血病去世,她的故事激励了数千人成为捐赠者,到我的祖母,她在2012年与癌症的斗争中失利。

D. They allow teenagers to become better learners.
【答案】8. C 9. D 10. B 11. B

In 2011 Browne wrote a paper stating that a single piece of synthetic clothing can produce more than 1,900 fibers per wash.
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. B 15. A
