The night before the first day of school is usually an exciting and sleepless one for me. This virtual (虚拟的) school year, however, didn't give me that same feeling. In my mind, I couldn't communicate with my classmates, and I couldn't have conversations with my favorite teachers. So I went to bed, filled with more curiosity (好奇) and uncertainty than anything else.
I woke up the next day at 9 a. m., as my first class that day didn't start until 10 a.m. I sat at my desk waiting for my first online class of the day: AP Statistics. The class could only be described as two things: awkward and a bit boring. Awkward because of the lasting silence that often fell over us, as most of the students, myself included, refused to discuss their summers, and boring because I had to look at a screen instead of truly communicating with my teacher.
I would have preferred sitting in a classroom wearing my picked first-day clothes, but, I didn't say anything. I knew it was much safer for us to learn from home.
Once the class ended, my one-hour lunch block began. My virtual lunch was at 11:20 a.m.
My next two classes flew by. They had the same awkwardness and boredom, with different levels of enjoyability based on the subject and teacher.
At the end of the day, I felt strange, and like I hadn't done anything at all or even actually gone to school. I never felt like I hadn't done anything with myself that day before. I didn't even feel like a student on a “pursuit (追求) of knowledge.” I just felt like I was watching something on my computer screen.
It wasn't my favorite thing in the world, but, it's the new normal (常态), and I and my classmates will have to get used to it.
4. How did the writer feel the night before the first day of school?
A. He was too excited to fall asleep.
B. He couldn't wait to meet his classmates.
C. He was unsure about what would happen.
D. He was looking forward to online learning.
5 Why did the writer feel bored in AP Statistics class?
A. He couldn't have real communication with the teacher.
B. He couldn't understand what the teacher said.
C. He felt the unhappiness of his classmates.
D. He thought the class was valueless.
6. What can we say about the writer at the end of the day?
A. He had got used to the new school life.
B. He preferred to have a class online.
C. He hated to do much homework.
D. He felt empty in his heart.
7. How is the text mainly developed?
A. By giving examples.
B By giving instructions.
C. By following time order.
D. By providing research results.
C
I will never forget the day when I won the bicycle race for the third time. It was special for me because I set a new record. But what made it more special was that I had to go through a tough time getting ready for the day.
About three months before the final race something unfortunate happened when I fell off during practice and broke my left leg. All I could do was to wait for the injuries to heal (治愈). The worry was that the doctors suggested bed rest for at least two months. A close friend of mine who had just recovered from his leg injury warned me that even if I were able to stand on my feet, I wouldn’t be able to ride a bicycle for a few more weeks. It was safe for me to give up because my leg was likely to be injured again during practice or the race.
It was very difficult for me to just stop like this. My father felt bad too. He tried to keep my spirits up during my bed rest. My parents gave me nutritious (有营养的) food to keep me strong. They showed me lots of videos of cycling events to improve (提升) my riding skills. Thus, they were preparing me for the day when I returned to the track. The most important thing they taught me was that while there could be a chance of missing the race, never giving up in such a situation was an example of good sportsmanship.
Two months passed quickly. The doctors were amazed at my complete recovery and supported my participation (参赛). Gradually, I was walking comfortably and exercising too. I practised as much as I could.
Finally, the big day came. I was a little bit nervous but once I was on the race track, the fear had gone. The race began. I tried my best and finally I won the race. The whole stadium (体育场) was clapping for me. This became my most special day.
8. What was the friend’s attitude to the author’s participation in the race?
A. He doubted it. B. He was against it.
C. He was hopeful about it. D. He paid little attention to it.
9. What did the author’s parents do during the two months?
A. They taught him how to take chances.
B. They helped him prepare for next year’s race.
C. They made it possible for him to enter the race.
D. They let him realise the importance of healthy diets.
10. Which of the following can best describe the author?
A Honest. B. Creative. C. Warm-hearted. D. Strong-minded.
11. What can be the best title for the text?
A. My most special day B. My unfortunate experience
C. A long bed rest after an injury D. An exciting bicycle race in my school
D
Freshman year of high school is a big transition (过渡) for any student.
Luckily, you’re not the only person going through this, and plenty of others have made the transition before you too.
One of the ways in which high school is different from middle school or junior high the most is the higher expectations. You’ll find that you’re expected to keep closer track of your own schedule and responsibilities with fewer people checking up on you. At the same time, your classes are likely to become more challenging, and you might be participating in new school activities as well.
Some students find it hard to keep up with everything at first, which is totally normal. One way to prepare in advance for these higher expectations is to make sure that you have organized schedules in place before you start high school.
Another important skill for meeting these higher expectations is building a strong support network. No matter how strong a student you are, at some point you will need some help. Keeping healthy relationships with your friends and teachers is a great way to make sure that you have people who are willing to help when you need them.
Try to get to know at least some of your teachers beyond your classroom communication. Be an active learner during class and stay after class to ask questions. Take advantage of email or class messaging systems. The better your teachers know you, the better prepared they’ll be to help when you need them.
It’s important for you to keep in mind as you start high school that no one is perfect. Transitions are hard for everyone, and starting high school is a big transition. These challenges provide a great chance to reinvent (重塑) yourself.
12. In the author’s view, the biggest difference between high school and middle school is ________.
A. different relationships B. the higher pressure
C. high academic achievement D. the higher expectations
13. Which of the following suggestion is not mentioned in the text?
A Careful schedules. B. Healthy relationships.
C. Reinventing yourself. D. Using network information.
14. Who is the article written for?
A. Students in junior school. B. Teachers in high school.
C. Parents of high school students. D. Students in senior high school.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. How to Get Through the Transition of Freshman Year of High School
B. How to Become an Active Learner in High School
C. What to Prepare to Keep up with Everything in High School
D. How to Meet Your Teacher’s High Expectations

G 17. E 18. F 19. A 20. D
空前“Taking good notes is a time-saving skill that will help you to become a better student in several ways.(记好笔记是一项节省时间的技能,它将在几个方面帮助你成为一个更好的学生。)”说明记笔记有很多好处,由后面second, third可判断,空格处应该填的是第一方面,即first,G选项“First, the simple act of writing something down makes it easier for you to understand and remember it.(首先,把东西写下来这个简单的行为会让你更容易理解和记住它。)”
根据下文“Whenever or however you take notes, keep in mind that note-taking is a selective process.(无论何时以何种方式记笔记,记住记笔记是一个选择性的过程。)”以及前一句“You will want to take notes during classroom discussions and while reading a textbook or doing research for a report.(在课堂讨论、阅读教科书或为报告做研究时,你会想要做笔记。)”
根据前一句话“Whenever or however you take notes, keep in mind that note-taking is a selective process.(无论何时以何种方式记笔记,记住记笔记是一个选择性的过程。)”说明记笔记是选择性的过程,也就是你得知道哪些重要,该记下来,哪些不用记下来,F选项“That means you must first decide what is important enough to include in your notes.(这意味着你必须首先决定什么是重要的,要写进你的笔记。)”
空前“Write your notes in your own words.(用你自己的话写笔记。)”是一种方法,空后“Note any questions or ideas you may have about what was said or written.(记下你对所说或所写内容的任何问题或想法。)”
根据上文“As you take notes, you may want to use your own shorthand (速记). When you do, be sure that you understand your symbols and that you use them all the time.(当你记笔记时,你可能想要使用你自己的速记法。当你这样做的时候,确保你理解了你的符号,并且你一直在使用它们。)”可知,在你记笔记的时候,你可能会用速记的方式。一定要注意,要确保你以后还能看懂你用的速记符号,并且一直这样用,否则的话,以后你可能就看不懂你记的笔记了,D选项“Otherwise, you may not be able to read your notes later.(否则,你以后可能无法阅读你的笔记。)”说明了你以后可能无法阅读你的笔记,承接上文的“be sure that you understand your symbols and that you use them all the time”,因此承接上文,符合语境。故选D。

Dear Mary,
I’m sorry to learn that you have trouble adapting to your new school life in Canada, but it can be easily changed if you take advantage of my tips.
Firstly, to be confident to communicate with the locals, you should go all out to improve your English. Secondly, I find it important for you to use all resources to make more friends, which can contribute to forgetting your loneliness. Thirdly, there are all kinds of activities in senior high, and you must have a positive attitude to them, because they will help to explore your potential and develop your confidence. I hope it can make a difference to you.
I’m looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
