As Alexander Dumas(大仲马)believed, “Friendship consists in forgetting what one gives and remembering what one receives”. You are in favour of this kind of friend. You should: You should talk about the topic for 1–2 minutes. You have one minute to think about what you are going to say. Write down some notes to help you. When the others share their ideas, you should take notes and give your opinions. 1 2 3 tell what friendship really means; give reasons why you think this kind of friend is best; listen to your group members and then tell which of their choice is more/less effective and why. Meaning Reasons Argument3(Role C) A true friend is one who forgets what he has given and is grateful for what he has received. remember everything you do for him, appreciate it, and return the favour when you need help help you with your study and work, but never show off influence you to be a more reliable person Step Two: Form three groups. Each group chooses a role from the following. Discuss how you understand it and why you like this kind of friend. While discussing, you can draw a mind map or take notes. Speaking: Group Work Section Two Step Three: Form new groups of three, making sure each member of the new group comes from a different former group. Each new group holds a discussion, in which each member states the meaning of friendship and give reasons why you think so. While listening, the other two members should take appropriate notes. After completing your respective statements, each of you should evaluate the other two opinions, decide which you agree more, and explain the reasons. A: I think real friendship is to make progress together and the best friends are those who are upright, honest and have a wide range of knowledge. Upright and noble friends can always teach you how to identify and correct some unfair things. An honest friend may have an uncomfortable manner of speaking, but he is the one who will point out my shortcomings and help me become a better person. I learn a lot from friends Speaking: Group Work Section Two B: C: who are knowledgeable, and they inspire me to learn more about the world. I think friendship means support and the best friends are those who help and care for me when I am in trouble rather than when I am in happiness. In times of difficulty, a true friend will try his best to help you solve the problem without caring about gain or loss and without complaining. They will show up in times of trouble and help you to resolve awkward situations. They love you as who you are not because of your wealth and they don’t disown you when you are poor. I think real friendship means understanding and giving, and the best friends are those who forget what they have given and are grateful for what they has received. Because they are so generous and kind, they will be a good influence for you and help you become more reliable in work and study. Speaking: Group Work Section Two A: B: A true friend remembers everything you do for him, appreciates it, and returns the favour when you need his help. ... I cannot agree with B more. In the workplace, when colleagues say nice things and flatter you, this may be just friendly conversation. Also, a person who gives you something nice may simply do it for his or her own business goal, not because he or she is your friend. You can say that again. I think B and C express the similar thing about the meaning of true friends. We need real friends, or true friendship, which is to help each other without expecting anything in return. As for A, I think it is also the true meaning of good friends. Friends need to learn from each other and make progress together. No matter in study or life or in the workplace. Speaking: Group Work Section Two C: Yes, I am also convinced by your reasons. So we should treasure our true friends and protect our true friendship. Speaking: Group Work Section Two Read and circle the words in the sentences you hear. 1 A polite B play 2 A radar B writer 3 A house B hiss 4 A tears B tours 5 A grow B grey 6 A toes B toys 7 A theatre B thief 8 A share B sheer Exercise II Exercise I Pronunciation Section Two 39 Step One : Read and pay special attention to the linking(连 读) of the words.
