Meet the Islands
Located 86 km north-east of Bougainville in the South Pacific, the Carteret Islands of Papua New Guinea are composed of low-lying islands 21 (distribute) in a horseshoe shape, with a total land area of 0.6 square kilometers and a maximum elevation of 1.5 meters above sea level.
The Carteret Islands are believed 22 (inhabit) for more than one thousand years. Few places are as calm, peaceful and beautiful as the seaside here on a calm day. People are very 23 (welcome), gentle, and calm. There’s no phone network, shops, computers, roads, cars, or motorbikes. Food is cooked on open fires. People here live sustainably. They don’t overfish or pollute, making no contribution to the warming of our planet. However, they are feeling the consequences of the climate change.
Now, as the land 24 (swallow) by the rising sea, the islanders are faced with an uncertain future. Storms and high tides wash away homes, destroy vegetable gardens and pollute fresh water supplies. The trees on the island are also being impacted by the saltwater. The beach exists 25 fertile soil once did. 26 the coral and seagrasses die, so do the breeding areas for fish. Many seawalls have been built 27 with little success. The islands have gradually become uninhabitable.
The Carteret islanders are labelled as the world’s first official climate-change refugees, as they are forced to abandon their homelands 28 _______ food shortages, rising sea levels, sinking shorelines, and the dangers of storms and tides. In front of 29 is the choice whether to stay and watch the islands shrink and slowly disappear or try to rebuild their community somewhere else. Yet, the relocation is not a move embraced by most, and some are unhappy living away from their home, and have returned after struggling to adapt. On the other hand, relocation will be a great challenge to the preservation of the identity and culture of the Carteret islanders.
The Carteret Islanders’ story illustrates how small island states and coastal communities fall victim 30 rising sea levels caused by climate change. The Carteret Islanders, with a carbon footprint among the lowest in the world, will be among the first to have to leave their homes because of rising seas caused by emissions from other nations.
Section B
Directions: Fill in each blank with a proper word chosen from the box. Each word can be used only once. Note that there is one word more than you need.
Smart Homes Around the Corner
Internet-connected lights, locks and laundry machines are close to becoming everyday household items, thanks in part to voice-activated speakers such as Amazon’s Echo and Google Home.
The market has witnessed increasing sales of lights that turn off when you say “good night,” smart locks that let in your friends before you get home, and other smart-home gadgets (小配件). Smart speakers and their digital assistants also have been growing in 31 . From your couch, you can ask these smart assistants to play your favorite music, check the weather, order pizza or 32 flights.
While the devices are still relatively expensive—you can get six 33 light bulbs for the price of a single smart one— 34 is likely to pick up further as prices fall in the future.
Moreover, the more people use such speakers, it turns out, the more things they want them to do. In some cases, that leads 35 to other smart gadgets for the home. People who own an Echo are 36 more likely to install other smart gadgets, said David Limp, Amazon’s senior vice president of devices and services. “They don’t start by rewiring the whole home. They start with a switch.” That switch, known as a smart plug, can make any appliance remote-controllable by cutting or 37 its power—just ask an assistant to turn it off or on.
U.S. sales of smart speakers have more than tripled (增至三倍) to nearly 25 million in 2017, as shown by a CTA (Commodity Trading Advisors) 38 . They’re expected to grow further this year, to about 36 million, as Apple’s HomePod joins the competition.
Smart-home products such as lights and security cameras are lagging behind, but they have been catching up. “We’re still in the early stages,” said Jeff Patton, a smart-home executive at General Electric. “While the gadgets aren’t yet 39 ” he said, “average people are much more aware of them”.
Alex Hawkinson, CEO of Samsung’s Smart Things smart-home business, said that about half of his new customers are coming because of smart speakers “ 40 a lot of excitement.” Once people get their first smart product, such as a smart plug, they are likely to buy more, market researchers say. They also tell friends and neighbors about them, and might buy some as gifts.
III. Reading Comprehension (45分)
Section A
Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A. B.C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context
Reading involves looking at illustrative symbols and expressing mentally the sounds and ideas they represent. Concepts of reading have changed 41 over the centuries. During the 1950’s and 1960’s especially, increased attention has been devoted to 42 the reading process. Although experts agree that reading 43 a complex organization of higher mental 44 , they disagree about the exact nature of the process. Some experts, who regard language primarily as a code using symbols to represent sounds, 45 reading as simply the decoding (解码) of symbols into the sounds they stand for.
These authorities 46 that meaning, being concerned with thinking, must be taught independently of the decoding process. Others maintain that reading is inexplainably related to thinking, and that a child who pronounces sounds without 47 their meaning is not truly reading. The reader, 48 some, is not just a person with a theoretical ability to read but one who 49 reads.
Many adults, although they have the ability to read, have never read a book in its 50 . By some experts they would not be 51 as readers. Clearly, the philosophy, objectives, methods and materials of reading will depend on the definition one uses. By the most 52 and satisfactory definition, reading is the ability to 53 the sound-symbols code of the language, to interpret meaning for various 54 , at various rates, and at various levels of difficulty, and to do so widely and enthusiastically. 55 , reading is the interpretation of ideas through the use of symbols representing sounds and ideas.

As Ginni Bazlinton reached Antarctica, she found herself greeted by a group of little Gentoo penguins longing to say hello. These gentle, lovely gatekeepers welcomed her and kick-started what was to be a trip Ginni would never forget.
Ever since her childhood, Ginni, now 71, has had a deep love for travel. Throughout her career (职业) as a professional dancer, she toured in the UK, but always longed to explore further. When she retired from dancing and her sons eventually flew the nest, she decided it was time to take the plunge.
After taking a degree at Chichester University in Related Arts, Ginni began to travel the world, eventually getting work teaching English in Japan and Chile. And it was in Chile she discovered she could get last-minute cheap deals on ships going to Antarctica from the islands off Tierra del Fuego, the southernmost tip of the South American mainland. “I just decided I wanted to go,” she says. “I had no idea about what I’d find there and I wasn’t nervous, I just wanted to do it. And I wanted to do it alone as I always prefer it that way.”
In March 2008, Ginni boarded a ship with 48 passengers she’d never met before, to begin the journey towards Antarctica. “From seeing the wildlife to witnessing sunrises, the whole experience was amazing. Antarctica left an impression on me that no other place has,” Ginni says. “I remember the first time I saw a humpback whale; it just rose out of the water like some prehistoric creature and I thought it was smiling at us. You could still hear the operatic sounds it was making underwater.”
The realization that this is a precious land, to be respected by humans, was one of the biggest things that hit home to Ginni.

C.It should be well preserved. D.It needs to be fully introduced.
59.What is the text mainly about?
A.A childhood dream. B.An unforgettable experience.
C.Sailing around the world. D.Meeting animals in Antarctica.

Scientists in Antarctica have recorded, for the first time, unusually warm water beneath a glacier (冰川)the size of Florida that is already melting and contributing to a rise in sea levels.
The researchers, working on the Thwaites Glacier, recorded water temperatures at the base of the ice of more than 2℃, above the normal freezing point. Critically, the measurements were taken at the glacier's grounding line, the area where it transforms from resting wholly on bedrock to spreading out on the sea as ice shelves. It is unclear how fast the glacier is getting worse: Studies have forecast its total collapse in a century or in a few decades. The presence of warm water in the grounding line may support estimates at the faster range.
That is worthy of attention because the Thwaites, along with the Pine Island Glacier and several smaller glaciers, acts as a brake on part of the much larger West Antarctic Ice Sheet, which , if melted, would raise the world's oceans by more than a meter over centuries, an amount that would put many coastal cities underwater.
“Warm waters in this part of the world, as remote as they may seem, should serve as a warning to all of us about the potential terrible changes to the planet brought about by climate change,” said David Holland, director of New York University's Environmental Fluid Dynamics Laboratory.
Glaciologists have previously raised alarm over the presence of warm water melting the Thwaites from below. This is the first time, though, that warm waters have been measured at the glacier's grounding line.
To observe activity beneath the glacier, Dr.Holland's team drilled a hole -about 30 centimeters wide and 600 meters deep-from the surface to the bottom and then placed equipment that measures water temperature and ocean turbulence, or the mixing of freshwater from the glacier and salty ocean water.Collecting the data took about 96 hours in subzero weather. Warm waters beneath the Thwaites are actively melting it, the team found.
While scientists may not yet be able to definitively predict how soon glaciers like the Thwaites will melt, human-caused climate change is a key factor. The biggest predictor of “how much ice we will lose and how quickly we will lose it,”Dr.Holland said, “is human action.”
63.What does warm water found in the glacier’s grounding line indicate?
A.Sea levels should be remeasured.
B.It may take a century for the glacier to melt.
C.The grounding line is getting shorter.
D.The glacier might disappear sooner
64.The Thwaites and other glaciers are important because ______.
A.they hold back ice
B.they are extremely large
C.they are located at bedrocks
D.they are collapsing
65.What can be inferred from the passage about the researchers’ viewpoints?
A.We can predict how much ice can be kept.
B.Human beings are to blame for the loss of ice.
C.Glaciers serve a more important purpose than expected.
D.More data needs to be collected to support the estimates.
66.What is the passage mainly about?
A.The efforts made to avoid the presence of warm water.
B.The alarm voiced on the worsening situation of glaciers.
C.The tools employed to measure the temperature of Antarctica.
D.The prediction based on a scientific study of the grounding line.
Section C
Directions: Read the passage carefully. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.
What time do schools typically start? It depends on where they are. Some schools start early — at 7 a.m. in Brazil. In France, schools start at 8. In Australia, schools open their doors an hour later, at 9 a.m. In the U.S., schedules vary, but many opening school bells ring before 8.
So is an earlier or a later start time better? For years, this has been debated. 67 They have long said that asking teens to show up to class before 8:00 a.m. isn’t good for their health or their report cards.
In recent years, 70 districts across the U.S. have also changed their hours. Supporters of this idea expect that more school districts will follow. One reason for the later start times is that people have mostly stopped debating the science that supports it.
In 2014, the American Academy of Pediatrics released a statement regarding school start times. Starting later isn’t the cure for all teen health and academic problems, the AAP said. 68 “Essentially, across the board, any area that you look at improves pretty dramatically” with later school start times, said an expert. In fact, research from countries around the world confirms that adolescents who get enough sleep are healthier overall. They also do better in school.
So why don’t teens — who need about nine hours of sleep each night — just go to bed earlier? Researcher Paul Kelley from the University of Oxford in England says that adolescents experience a change in their biological clocks. 69 Teens are also wired to wake up later in the morning. Therefore, Kelley says, early wake times can cause teens to be short on sleep.
So why don’t all high schools start later? The obstacles are often financial. In the U.S., public schools in St. Paul, Minnesota, delayed the adoption of later start times for all its high school students because of transportation issues. It would have cost St. Paul about $8 million to buy the additional buses needed, explained Jackie Statum Allen, assistant director for strategic planning and police. 70
A.But it can improve students’ lives in many ways.
B.Many are concerned that a later school day will cause problems.
C.Now, more U.S. school districts are beginning to take the advice of scientists.
D.As a result, they naturally fall asleep later at night than many parents would like.
E.It would be much better to put that money into the classroom rather than the gas tank.
F.Schools put a plan in place for a later start time after the district listened to parent feedback.
IV. Summary Writing (10分)
Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in NO MORE THAN 60 WORDS. Use your own words as far as possible.
These days our society develops rapidly and forces people to rush. It appears that people have got used to being in a hurry. However, it’s better for people to take their time and live their life at a slower pace than to hurry to get things done.
The main reason that convinces us to be against doing work in a hurry is the possibility of doing wrong in a rush. When people do their jobs or take action in a hurry, they can’t make a sound decision and probably regret later. As the saying goes, “Haste makes waste.” We should think carefully before making a decision and do our work less quickly. We should not make mistakes by doing work hurriedly.
Slowing down the pace of life helps people enjoy their life better. For example, taking a train to some place certainly will take more time than taking a plane. However, taking a train makes people have enough time to get to know a lot of new friends. Besides, it allows people to fully enjoy the beautiful scenery along the way. On the contrary, being in a hurry will make us lose chances of enjoying our lives.
Finally, slower life pace provides better health conditions for us. As is known to all, taking action in a hurry bothers people and raises their stress. People think if they are not in a hurry, they will become a loser and that annoys them. But being in a hurry can hurt people both physically and mentally (精神上). According to some studies, people who have a slower pace suffer fewer diseases, tend to be happier and live much longer than those whose life is tense, even if the former finish jobs more slowly than the latter.
In short, working quickly will bring about more material benefits to make our society more advanced. Yet, much stress can’t bring enjoyment, friends and health, which are much more important than money and other material advantages. Therefore, take your time and live your life at a slower pace.

A
As Ginni Bazlinton reached Antarctica, she found herself greeted by a group of little Gentoo penguins longing to say hello.

Walking helps you in many ways. First it makes you heart stronger. Studies show regular walking reduces your chance of heart disease. Walking quickly for 30 minutes a day also helps control high blood pressure. It can reduce your chance of developing some cancers, too.
Want to lose weight? You need to burn 600 more calories each day than you eat. Walking is the easiest way. As people age, their brains don’t work as well .One in14 people over 65 suffers from memory loss. Older people who walk six miles or more per week keep their brains in better shape.
Walking helps your mental health, too. Putting one foot in front of the other isn’t difficult. You don’t have to think about it, so you can concentrate on other things.
You can make walking part of your day. Instead of parking near your house, park a distance away and walk. Instead of taking the elevator, walk. Make walking a habit, and see how it makes you feel.

【原文】On this graduation ceremony I’d like to offer my sincere congratulations to you all. Well done, everyone. I’ve got three tips to share with you, hoping to make a direction for the future life after your graduation from college.
Tip one: There are few things that get you over your own crop more than working hard. Do you want to know how to work hard? It’s not difficult. All you have to do is to listen. Listen to what’s going on around you. Learn how the project you are working on fits into the big picture. Learn how you fit in. When you truly understand how the big picture works, you start being able to expect changes and change your behavior.
Tip two: Be kind to everyone. I can’t stress this enough, but it remains true. Kindness will payback invaluable rewards. Don’t you believe me? I'm sure that at some point you’ll have the opportunity to work for someone who used to be your assistant, or hire someone who used to be your boss.
Tip three: Stay interested. Is there anything you can’t stop thinking about? Keep doing it. Interest is the better part of success. You will be great at the things that you are willing to do.
Remember that you have time to figure out what you want to do. You have time to try again. Just have courage to do it so long as you're willing to work hard.

【原文】W: Hi, Bryan. How are you doing? You look tired.
M: Oh, I’m a little burned out. I’ve been surfing the Net for the last few hours.
W: Were you doing schoolwork, or was it just for pleasure.
M: Well, I wanted to get some information on South America for a project I have, but I found a really interesting chat site with people from there and started chatting.
W: Well, did you get the information you needed?
M: Yes, but then we spent lots of time chatting about other interests.
W: I see. The Internet is a wonderful place. There is so much information available. Sometimes I find myself looking for one piece of information, but by the time I have finished, I have a lot more than I started off looking for.
M: I know. One thing I really don’t like about it, though, it takes so much longer to find things, because many sites are useless.
W: Yes, there is that, and also, I often find the same site over and over again in a search. That definitely wastes lots of my time.
M: And of course, there are sites that offer little to no relevant information on the topic you are searching for. In my search today, I found quite a few sites that were nothing more than old event calendars.
W: Well, I’m sure they were useful to someone at some time, but they should be removed when they’re no longer of use to anyone.
M: I agree. With all the time I spend on it, I still find it to be the best source of information available. And speaking of information, I really should read through what I got on the Internet and start working on my subject.
W: Okay. Good luck. It’s funny we had this chat, as I was just on my way home to surf the Net myself.
M: Well, it was nice talking to you, and maybe I’ll meet you in a chat room later tonight.

A
As Ginni Bazlinton reached Antarctica, she found herself greeted by a group of little Gentoo penguins longing to say hello.

A.Try challenging things. B.Take a degree.
C.Bring back lost memories. D.Stick to a promise.
57.What made Ginni decide on the trip to Antarctica?
A.Lovely penguins. B.Beautiful scenery.
C.A discount fare. D.A friend’s invitation.
58.What does Ginni think about Antarctica after the journey?
A.It could be a home for her. B.It should be easily accessible.

【答案】63.D 64.A 65.B 66.B
【分析】本文是说明文。科学家在南极洲第一次在冰川的接地线上测量到水温超过2℃,高于正常冰点。 温暖的海水对人类发出了警告。
63.细节理解题。第二段中提到研究斯Thwaites冰川的研究人员记录了冰层底部的水温超过2℃,高于正常冰点;根据第二段中“It is unclear how fast the glacier is getting worse: Studies have forecast its total collapse in a century or in a few decades.(目前还不清楚冰川恶化的速度有多快:研究预测冰川将在一个世纪或几十年内完全崩塌。)”可知,在冰川的接地线上发现的温暖的海水表明冰川可能在一个世纪或几十年内会更快消失。故选D项。
64.细节理解题。根据第三段中“the Thwaites, along with the Pine Island Glacier and several smaller glaciers, acts as a brake on part of the much larger West Antarctic Ice Sheet, which if melted, would raise the world’s oceans by more than a meter over centuries.(因为Thwaites、松岛冰川和几个较小的冰川,对更大的南极西部冰盖起到阻拦的作用。而如果南极西部冰盖融化的话,几个世纪,海平面就会上升了一米多)”。因此,Thwaites冰川和其他的冰川的作用很重要因为它们阻拦了一部分南极西部冰盖。故选A项。
65.推理判断题。根据文章最后一段中“…human-caused climate change is a key factor. ” 和“how much ice we will lose and how quickly we will lose it,”Dr.Holland said,“is human action.”
根据第四段中““Warm waters in this part of the world,…should serve as a warning to all of us about the potential terrible changes to the planet brought about by climate change,”” 科学家们指出,温暖的海水应该对我们所有人发出警告,让我们知道气候变化可能给地球带来可怕的后果;并且指出,人类造成的气候变化是一个关键因素。因此文章是关于日益恶化的冰川情况对人类提出的警告。故选B项。

【答案】67.C 68.A 69.D 70.E
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要探讨了应不应该推迟学校上课时间的问题。
67.根据上文“So is an earlier or a later start time better? For years, this has been debated.(那么,是早一点出发好还是晚一点出发好?多年来,人们一直在争论这个问题)”以及后文“They have long said that asking teens to show up to class before 8:00 a.m. isn’t good for their health or their report cards.(他们一直说,要求青少年在早上8点前上课对他们的健康和成绩单都没有好处)”可知,此处应该会提到一些人的观点。故C选项“现在,越来越多的美国学区开始采纳科学家的建议。”符合语境,空后的They指代 C选项中的scientists,箜后这句话即是科学家的观点。故选C。
68.根据上文“In 2014, the American Academy of Pediatrics released a statement regarding school start times. Starting later isn’t the cure for all teen health and academic problems, the AAP said.(2014年,美国儿科学会发布了一份关于学校上课时间的声明。美国儿科学会表示,推迟上学并不能解决所有青少年的健康和学业问题)”以及后文““Essentially, across the board, any area that you look at improves pretty dramatically” with later school start times, said an expert. In fact, research from countries around the world confirms that adolescents who get enough sleep are healthier overall. They also do better in school.(一位专家说:“从本质上讲,随着学校上课时间的推迟,你所看到的任何领域都有了相当显著的改善。”事实上,来自世界各国的研究证实,睡眠充足的青少年总体上更健康。他们在学校的表现也更好)”可知,上文提到“推迟上学并不能解决所有青少年的健康和学业问题”,后文则提到推迟上课时间让青少年总体上更健康,他们在学校的表现也更好,说明推迟上课时间可以在很多方面改善学生的生活。故A选项“但它可以在很多方面改善学生的生活”符合语境,故选A。
69.根据上文“So why don’t teens — who need about nine hours of sleep each night — just go to bed earlier? Researcher Paul Kelley from the University of Oxford in England says that adolescents experience a change in their biological clocks.(那么,为什么青少年——他们每晚需要大约9个小时的睡眠——不早点睡觉呢?英国牛津大学的研究人员保罗·凯利说,青少年的生物钟会发生变化)”以及后文“Teens are also wired to wake up later in the morning. Therefore, Kelley says, early wake times can cause teens to be short on sleep.(青少年早上起床也很晚。因此,凯利说,早醒会导致青少年睡眠不足)”可知,本句与上文构成因果关系,指出青少年生物钟发生变化导致的结果:因此,他们晚上自然会比许多父母希望的更晚入睡。故D选项“因此,他们晚上自然会比许多父母希望的更晚入睡”符合语境,故选D。
70.根据上文“So why don’t all high schools start later? The obstacles are often financial. In the U.S., public schools in St. Paul, Minnesota, delayed the adoption of later start times for all its high school students because of transportation issues. It would have cost St. Paul about $8 million to buy the additional buses needed, explained Jackie Statum Allen, assistant director for strategic planning and police.(那么为什么不是所有的高中都推迟上课呢?
71.__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________【答案】Despite being accustomed to the fast pace in modern society, people are recommended to lead a slower life. 【答案】I’m glad that the activity of “Making Our Home Better” is being carried out and suggestions for community development are called for. As we can see, the last few years has witnessed great improvement in the neighborhood.
However, there still exist some problems. The crucial one is that there is a shortage of places for cultural activities in the community, which fails to meet the needs of residents’ leisure and entertainment. The lack of entertainment facilities leads to dull spare time life of residents.
Therefore, it is hoped that the government will strengthen the construction of urban cultural facilities, ensuring enough funds for infrastructure. By doing so, not only can residents enrich their daily life but also get a sense of belonging.
I’d appreciate it if you could take my suggestion into consideration. Hopefully, our community will be better and better.

However, there still exist some problems. The crucial one is that there is a shortage of places for cultural activities in the community, which fails to meet the needs of residents’ leisure and entertainment. The lack of entertainment facilities leads to dull spare time life of residents.
Therefore, it is hoped that the government will strengthen the construction of urban cultural facilities, ensuring
enough funds for infrastructure. By doing so, not only can residents enrich their daily life but also get a sense of belonging.
I’d appreciate it if you could take my suggestion into consideration. Hopefully, our community will be better and better.
