(23-24九年级上·上海静安·期中)Emergencies don’t happen very often. But when they do, you want to get help first. No one wants to spend time looking up the phone numbers.
In 1968, the Untied States government wanted one number that people could call for emergencies. They decided that 911 was easy to remember and people could dial it quickly. The very first 911 call was made on February 16, 1968, in Alabama. Today, 911 is used for emergencies in most parts of the United States and many parts of Canada.
Other countries may use other numbers. In Great Britain, it’s 999. If you’re not sure which emergency number is used in your area, check your phone book.
When to call
Never call 911 as a joke or just to see what might happen. The only time you should call 911 is when a person is badly hurt in danger right now! So call when there is a fire, a car accident, or sudden sickness, etc.
When in an emergency call
When you dial the 911 operator (接线员), it’s always OK to give out your information. Speak slowly and clearly when you explain what’s happening. What happened? Where are you? Who needs help?
Don’t hang up (挂断)!
If you have to call 911, do not hang up until the operator tells you it’s OK to do so, That way, you can be sure that the operator has all the information to offer help fast.
A dog named Faith dialed 911 when her owner who was in a wheelchair fell and needed help. She had been taught to use a speed dial (快递拨号) function.

(22-23九年级上·上海嘉定·期中)根据以下内容,选择最恰当的答案。
In America, history is still a required subject at lower levels and students still choose to study it at higher levels. However, there is an ongoing discussion about whether schools should continue to teach History or whether they should spend the money on other subject. This article will deal with the arguments against and in favour of teaching History in school, concluding that we should teach History.
Many of my classmates suggest that History is one of the less interesting school subjects and that governments should spend the time and money on subjects that are more useful. They argue that Maths and English are more important so we can have a society with a good basic education. Others say that we should spend the money on teaching Science, as this can move a country forward and benefit the economy.
Yet, there are a number of reasons why it is a good idea to teach History. Teaching History is important because students should be able to understand the background to present situations in the news. This will create better-informed citizens. Another reason is that it helps pupils to understand their culture and background, which also helps them to understand the society they live in. In addition to learning about the past, History can help students to think for themselves. Finally, it also improves pupils’ reading and writing skills, which can help them become better students.
In conclusion, although there are clear arguments on both sides, it seems to me that teachers should teach children about the past because the value of the subject goes beyond the classroom. I would say that the teaching of History helps to create generations of well-educated and knowledgeable individuals.
1.The writer is probably a ________.
A.parent B.journalist C.teacher D.student
2.The passage mainly talks about whether ________.
A.school should teach History or not B.school should teach history at higher levels
C.more money should be spent on History D.students should choose the subjects they study
3.Some people think ________ is good for basic education.
A.focusing on math and English B.teaching History at lower levels.
C.offering more required subjects D.teaching science instead of History
4.The underlined word “this” refers to “________”.
A.education B.science C.money D.society
5.Why do students need to learn about culture?
A.It teaches them to think of themselves. B.It helps them to become better students.
C.It helps them to understand the society. D.It teaches them to respect each other.
6.Which of the following would the writer agree with?
A.Government spending on History education should be reduced.
B.The benefits of History education are useful in further study.
C.Teaching History brings many economic benefits to a country.
D.Covering History in the classroom is perhaps a waste of time.
(22-23九年级上·上海普陀·期中)Alex ran out of the house with a football. Usually he would practice his skills till sunset all by himself. But today was different. Today Alex met Leo.
Alex’s mom said that a couple and their son from Columbia were moving in next door. It had been a week. But Alex hadn’t seen the boy yet.
Alex crossed the yard and knocked confidently at the door and almost immediately Leo appeared. “Hi, my name is Alex,” Alex said, holding out his hand.
Leo smiled shyly and shook Alex’s hand. “Leo ... my name is Leo,” said the dark-haired boy quietly.
“I haven’t seen you around school yet, have you started? Do you play any sports? How do you like the neighborhood? ...” Alex kept asking questions at the wide-eyed Leo.
Shaking his head, Leo looked rather uncomfortable and uneasy. “Oh,” thought Alex, “he doesn’t understand me.” Alex presented his football to Leo and said, “Do you want to play?” He wished Leo would understand his action, if not his words. The smile on Leo’s face was the answer.
“Great!” responded Alex. Next moment they were passing the ball back and forth. Leo played well and they just hit it off so great. Hours sped by, and Alex’s mom called out that dinner was ready. Alex stopped playing and pantomimed putting a fork to his mouth and eating. “It’s time for dinner,” he said regretfully.
Leo grinned and repeated, “It’s time for dinner.”
“Exactly,” said Alex, “Can we play again tomorrow after school?” Alex asked, not sure if Leo would understand. Yet he could tell Leo didn’t get him.
Suddenly Alex got a great idea. He pulled the confused boy toward his house. There he started searching his bookshelf. Moments later, he found an orange book — a Spanish dictionary! He fingered the pages to look up the words for tomorrow, after and school.
Then Alex looked directly at Leo, held up the football, and said mañana, despué de, and la escuela, not sure if what he said really translated into what he wanted. His face brightened as Leo smiled and eagerly nodded his head.

J. K. Rowling is probably the most famous author alive today. Her books about the adventures of a young wizard (魔法师) named Harry Potter have sold more than 325 million copies. They have also been translated into 64 different languages.
Joanne Kathleen Rowling was born in 1965 in England. She always dreamt of becoming a writer, and began writing stories when she was six years old. After she studied French at university, in 1990 she decided to move to Manchester, and went there to look for a flat. Her journey back to London was long and boring. But on that journey the idea for the Harry Potter stories first entered her mind.
Over the next year, she worked hard on her novel. Then, her mother died from a long and difficult illness. She was only 45. To forget her grief, Rowling moved to Portugal (葡萄牙) to work as an English teacher. There, she had a lot of free time to work on her book, and rewrote many parts of the story.
When she arrived back in Britain in 1994, she had a baby daughter and very little money. She moved to Edinburgh to live near her sister, and worked on her novel. Whenever her daughter fell asleep, Rowling would write as quickly as she could. After several months, she finished the book.
It may be surprising, but no publishers wanted to buy her book at first. They thought that people today would not like a story about magic. In 1996, after a year of searching, she found a company that would publish the novel. It soon became a bestseller, and was later turned into a successful film. We arrived at the hospital to find Dad was very weak, but his smile was the same as ever. It was another attack of pneumonia (肺炎). My husband and I stayed with him for the weekend but had to return to our jobs on Monday. Local relatives would help Dad get home from hospital and look after him. But I was eager to find a way to let him know that we cared too, even when we weren’t with him.
Then I remembered a family tradition when our children were small. When leaving their grandparents’ home after a visit, each child would write a love note to their grandparents. They hid notes in cereal (麦片) box, under a hairbrush or next to the phone. For days, their grandparents would smile as they discovered these reminders (提示) of our love.
So as I tidied Dad’s kitchen and made up a bed for him downstairs in the living room, I wrote some notes. Some were practical: “Dad, I put the food in the fridge so it wouldn’t go bad.” Some expressed my love: “Dad, I hope you will sleep well in your new bed.” Most notes were downstairs where he would stay for several weeks, but one note I hid upstairs under his pillow (枕头), “Dad, if you have found this note, you must be feeling better. We are so glad!”
Just like his medicines made him better physically, these “emotional vitamins” would improve his health, too. Several weeks later, in one of our regular phone calls, I asked Dad how he was going. He said, “Pretty good. I just found your note under my pillow upstairs!”

(21-22九年级上·上海奉贤·期中)Around the world, kids have different childhoods, but many of them share one thing—the fairy tales of Danish author Hans Christian Andersen (1805—1875).
As a great fairy tale writer, Andersen’s stories are popular among generations of children. This April 2 is the 210th anniversary (周年) of his birth. We can still find that his writings are as popular now as they were then.
Andersen experienced poverty (贫穷) and difficulties in his youth. But these all inspired him to write wonderful stories. “I have a lot of material.” said Andersen, according to one of his biographies (自传). “It often seems to me as if every little flower is talking to me.” In his fairy tales, children not only see a fancy world but also learn difficult themes of life in simple ways.
In The Little Mermaid, to stay with the prince, the little mermaid asks the witch to change her tail into human legs. Although she can walk and dance beautifully on her human legs, she is in great pain when she does so. Sometimes we need to make sacrifices (牺牲) for something or someone we love. That’s what Andersen wanted to explain to us.
His other stories also have strong social messages. In The Ugly Duckling, the character everyone makes fun of has inner (内在的) beauty. Andersen wanted to teach children not to judge people by their appearances and that ordinary people can become heroes. The Emperor’s New Clothes is about two tailors (裁缝) who trick a very proud emperor into walking around with no clothes on. It showed Andersen’s anger against the authority (权威) of his time.
Today, Andersen’s fairy tales have been translated into more than 100 languages. To honor the great writer, every April 2, on Andersen’s birthday, people celebrate International Children’s Book Day.

(21-22九年级上·上海浦东新·期中)Not all vegetables need lots of sunshine. Mark Hoffmann and his wife own a bed-and-breakfast guesthouse in rural Kempton, Illinois. They often serve their guests fresh food from the garden.
The Hoffmanns have been growing food and flowers for over twenty years. For almost ten of those years, Mr. Hoffmann has been experimenting and working with shade (阴凉) planting. He says, “Most plants will produce more in full sun, but if you do not have full sun, there are other choices.”
For example, he grows tomatoes near oak trees. Oak trees can produce a lot of shade. But Mr. Hoffmann says his tomato plants grow as long as they get five hours a day of direct (直接的) sunshine, especially the morning sun. Not only does this go against the traditional advice that tomatoes need six, eight, even twelve hours a day of full sun, it also shows how plants and tree roots can share nutrients (营养素) and water.
Mr. Hoffman says only plants with wider leaves do better in shady environments. He also found that his potatoes did better partly in shade than in full sun.
Moving them out of the sun helped control an insect problem. Mr. Hoffmann does not use pesticides. He planted the potatoes in the shade, especially on the east side of the tree. The potatoes get the morning sun, but they are shaded during the hottest part of the day. Some insects dislike shade, and the hottest part of the day is when they do the worst of their damage.
Time of day, brightness of the sun, shadows from trees, walls and buildings-these all influence how much sunlight falls on plants. And people interested in shade planting should also remember something else. The term “shade” can describe different amounts of darkness. It can even mean different things in different parts of the world.
1.Which of the following can best describe Mr. Hoffmann?
A.warm-hearted B.Experienced C.Easy-going D.Funny
2.According to Mr. Hoffmann, how many hours of sunshine is enough to keep tomato plants growing regularly?

B.as a matter of fact, plants don’t need to grow in full sun
C.the more sunshine plants get, the more they will produce
D.it’s not fit for plants with less wide leaves to grow in shade
4.The underlined word “pesticides” means ________.
A.化肥 B.灌溉 C.农药 D.修整
5.The writer probably thinks that ________.
A.shade planting needs no sunshine B.shade is also important in plant growing
C.it is easy for people to learn shade planting D.vegetables made in the shade are of better taste
6.We may read the passage in a magazine of ________.
A.history B.travelling C.agriculture D.sports

In America, history is still a required subject at lower levels and students still choose to study it at higher levels. However, there is an ongoing discussion about whether schools should continue to teach History or whether they should spend the money on other subject. This article will deal with the arguments against and in favour of teaching History in school, concluding that we should teach History.
Many of my classmate suggest that History is one of the less interesting school subjects and that governments should spend the time and money on subjects that are more useful.
In conclusion, although there are clear arguments on both sides, it seems to me that we should teach children about the past because the value of the subject goes beyond the classroom. I would say that the teaching of History helps to create generations of well-educated and knowledgeable individuals.
1.The writer is probably ________.
A.parents B.journalist. C.teacher. D.students.
2.The passage mainly talks about whether ________.
A.we should teach History or not B.we should teach history at higher levels.
C.more money should be spent on History D.students should choose the subjects they study
3.Some people think ________ is good for basic education.
A.focusing on math and English B.teaching History at lower levels.
C.offering more required subjects D.teaching science instead of History
4.The underlined word ‘this’ refers to ‘________’.
A.education B.science C.money D.society
5.Why do students need to learn about culture?
A.It teaches them to think of themselves. B.It helps them to become better students.
C.It helps them to understand the society. D.It teaches them to respect each other.
6.Which of the following would the writer agree with.?
A.Government spending on History education should be reduced.
B.The benefits of History education are useful in further study.
C.Teaching History brings many economic benefits to a country
D.Covering History in the classroom is perhaps a waste of time.

In conclusion, although there are clear arguments on both sides, it seems to me that teachers should teach children about the past because the value of the subject goes beyond the classroom. I would say that the teaching of History helps to create generations of well-educated and knowledgeable individuals.

“Mañana!” Alex repeated.

People around the world have gone crazy for Harry Potter ever since.

(22-23九年级上·上海杨浦·期中)Choose the best answer (根据以下内容,选择最恰当的答案)
In America, history is still a required subject at lower levels and students still choose to study it at higher levels. However, there is an ongoing discussion about whether schools should continue to teach History or whether they should spend the money on other subject. This article will deal with the arguments against and in favour of teaching History in school, concluding that we should teach History.
Many of my classmate suggest that History is one of the less interesting school subjects and that governments should spend the time and money on subjects that are more useful.
In conclusion, although there are clear arguments on both sides, it seems to me that we should teach children about the past because the value of the subject goes beyond the classroom. I would say that the teaching of History helps to create generations of well-educated and knowledgeable individuals.
