Fiona McIntyre is a taxi driver in London. She tells us about her work and some of her experiences.
Q: When did you start?
I’ve been a taxi driver for about five years. Before that I was a bus driver in London, and I enjoyed it, but I wanted more freedom so I changed and started driving my taxi.
Q: Have you ever had any famous passengers?
Oh yes, I’ve had lots of famous people. About a year ago, a really famous actor got in my taxi. I took him to the airport. There was a lot of traffic jams, so he missed his plane and failed to meet his fans. It wasn’t my fault but when he got out of the taxi, he shouted at me angrily! I said to him, “Next time, take a bus!”
Q: Have passengers ever left anything in your taxi?
Oh, yes! People have left all kinds of things—umbrellas, hats, mobile phones, of course, even a dog once. Years ago, a woman left a pair of shoes on the seat.
And people have asked me to do some strange jobs. Once a doctor stopped me outside a hospital and asked me to take a skeleton(尸骨) to another hospital. Professors usually use skeletons to teach medical students, you know. And I did. But I asked him to pay first—the skeleton couldn’t pay, after all!
Q: What do you think is the worst part of your job?
Good question. I’ve always enjoyed being a taxi driver and I don’t want to change. But of course, sometimes, it’s not great. I don’t like driving around without a passenger, but it’s better than just waiting at the airport or at a railway station. I think that’s the worst part—waiting.
29.Fiona McIntyre thinks being a taxi driver is _______ than being a bus driver.
A.happier B.freer C.easier D.busier
30.Why did the famous actor miss his plane?
A.Because Fiona didn’t drive well. B.Because Fiona wasn’t very polite.
C.Because there were too many fans. D.Because there was too much traffic.
31.Passengers left the following things except _______ on Fiona’s taxi.
A.notebooks B.mobile phones C.hats D.umbrellas
32.What does the underlined word “him” in Fiona’s answer to the third question refer to?
A.The professor. B.The skeleton. C.The doctor. D.The student.
Overthinking is natural but can cause problems
Imagine you are going to give a speech the next day. The night before, you spend a lot of time thinking about the possible mistakes you might make and whether you’re prepared enough. Or maybe everyone will laugh at you if you lose. Well, you might be overthinking.
Overthinking means thinking about the same thing again and again, leading you to see things in the worst possible way. This is because our brains are always looking for dangers so that they can make plans to deal with those dangers and keep us safe. Those dangers in mind may come from past experiences or the “what ifs” we imagine could happen in the future.
Some people believe that overthinking may be helpful because it helps us look at a problem from every possible direction and get ready for what might happen. However, research suggests that overthinking can make us stressed, worried and unhappy.
What’s more, overthinking might create problems with how you get along with others. As you think the worst, make incorrect guesses, or worry about every little thing others do and say, you might misunderstand what they mean.
So, instead of sitting and thinking about a problem again and again, you can pay attention to something else instead of the problem itself. Your brain might find better ways to solve the problem while you’re doing something fun, like gardening, watching a comedy or even sleeping.
Also, when you find yourself overthinking, challenge these thoughts. Ask yourself if they will be sure to happen and think about other possibilities. It can be hard at first, but the following ways can help you know whether you are overthinking.
33.Overthinking can make us have the following feelings EXCEPT (除了) being ________.
A.stressed B.worried C.unhappy D.excited
34.If you are a person who is always overthinking, what might you think if you lose a basketball game?
A.My teachers will not like me and the classmates will laugh at me.
B.I believe I will do better next time if I practice harder.
C.Although I lost the game, I will treat myself to something delicious.
D.I will talk with my coach (教练) to find out why I lost the game.
35.How does the writer support his idea in Paragraph 5?
A.By listing numbers. B.By giving examples.
C.By raising questions. D.By showing pictures.
36.If there is another paragraph after the passage, it may be about ________.
A.what problems overthinking may cause B.what good things overthinking may bring
C.how you can know you are overthinking D.why people are always overthinking

B.I believe I will do better next time if I practice harder.
C.Although I lost the game, I will treat myself to something delicious.
D.I will talk with my coach (教练) to find out why I lost the game.
35.How does the writer support his idea in Paragraph 5?
A.By listing numbers. B.By giving examples.
C.By raising questions. D.By showing pictures.

Years ago, I interviewed a successful advertising man. He told me that he dreamed of being a writer in fact. I never believed he could succeed. However, about ten years later, holding up his new book. He has published more than 100 best sellers.
His ability to see himself as a writer shows a concept (理念) known as “possible selves”. It describes how people’s future life will be: what they may become, or want to become, or even fear to become.
A possible self can bring you far more than daydreams. Your dream can come true if you build a bridge from your “now” self to your possible self. But how do we build that bridge? Here are a few steps you can try.
First of all, just take action. If your dream is to succeed in getting a certain job, attend a course and start by taking up that type of work as a hobby or a side job. You should tell yourself that these are the steps you can take to achieve that goal.
Secondly, when you have a goal, share it. A study found that the adults who sent weekly progress to a friend completed their goals more easily than those who didn’t share their goals. If more friends know about your goal, it is more possible for you to achieve it. That finding was true for all goals.
Finally, get advice from the people who you haven’t spoken to in years. A lot of research has found that when you’re asking for valuable advice, people in your wider network are more likely (可能) to offer it than those closest to you. So, reach out to your weak connections for it when needed.

How is everything going? I’m glad to introduce the class meeting to you.
