Anna lived on the side of a valley (山谷). One winter, there was a very big flood, and a lot of houses were washed away. Anna’s house was high enough to escape the flood. So, when the water had disappeared, her house was not damaged.
However, Anna’s house was quite small and there were only two little bedrooms. Her husband died when their four children were very young. But, Anna shared her house with one of the families that had lost everything in the flood until it was possible for them to rebuild their own house.
Anna’s friends were very puzzled (困惑的) when they saw Anna do this. They could not understand why Anna wanted to give herself so much more work and trouble when she had so many children to support. Life would be even harder when another family joined them.
“Well,” Anna explained to her friends, “30 years ago, a woman in the town was very poor, because her husband had been killed in the war, and she had a lot of children, as I have now.”
“The day before Christmas, this woman said to her children, ‘We won’t have much for Christmas this year, so I am going to get only one gift for all of us and I am sure we will all be glad to have it. Now I’ll go and get it.’ She came back with a little girl who was even poorer than they, and who had no parents. ‘Here is our gift,’ she said to her children.”

(23-24八年级上·上海松江·期中)He is always in my heart. I couldn’t believe I lost him. As I think of my father, tears fill my eyes and stream down my face.
My dad always wanted to go to Canada, so he wrote a letter to one of my uncles in Canada for help. My uncle successfully got a visit visa(签证) for my dad. So he flew to Canada, looking for a better life for his kids. That year, I was six.
After a few months, dad wrote us a letter saying he was fine and happy. That letter, and its many fellows(伙伴) down the years, all with the same words, kept coming to our doors for 11 years. Yet, even as he lived here in Canada, his health was failing him―but fearing we would worry he never let on (透露) about his ill health. He spent these years in Canada working hard; finally after 11 years when he got his landed immigrant paper(永久居民证), he wrote us saying all of us could move to Canada.
We were all happy that we would finally be together. It was to be a huge family reunion(重聚). Sadly my father did not live to see his family reunion as he suffered a serious heart attack.
Yes, Canada is a wonderful country. So many times I can’t help thinking it was here that my dad was taken away from us. When I miss him, I want someone to hold me and give me a hug. And when I see how everyone gives his father gifts on Father’s Day, wishing them a long, happy life, I want to do the same. But to whom can I give my Father’s Day gift and card? Where can I get the same warm loving hug again?

(23-24八年级上·上海徐汇·期中)Answer the questions (根据短文内容回答下列问题).
In the1800s, the steam locomotive (蒸汽火车头) was considered by many to be a symbol of the new Industrial Age. It was, in fact, one of the most important inventions of the time. Over the years, there have been many changes to the locomotive. One of the most important has been its source of power.
The first railroads used horses for power, but the development of the steam locomotive made railroads a practical way of transportation. The first steam locomotive was built in 1804 in Britain by Richard Trevithick. It could pull 50,000 pounds, but it was not very successful because it was so heavy that it caused the rails to fall apart. However, it encouraged other engineers to try to build steam locomotives. Two of the most important men to accept the challenge were George Stephenson and his son, Robert. Robert once won a contest to build the best locomotive. The Rocket, as he called it, had an average speed of 20 miles per hour, and the top speed was 29 miles per hour.
In America, developments in steam engines were close behind those of the British. In 1830, Peter Cooper’s tiny locomotive, called Tom Thumb, lost a famous race against a horse-drawn coach. Although Peter Copper failed, it still made railroad officials believe that steam power was more practical than horse power.
Just before the turn of the century, the electric locomotive became widely in use. Its most successful period was the 1940s when U.S. railroads had 2,400 miles of electric routes.
The diesel (柴油) locomotive was invented in the 1890s by Rudolf Diesel, a German engineer. The power of this locomotive came from a diesel fuel engine. The diesel locomotive is still in use today. It costs about twice as much as a steam locomotive to build but it is much cheaper to operate.
1.The steam locomotive was one of the most important inventions in the 1800s, wasn’t it?
2.Who built the first steam locomotive?
3.What does the underlined phrase “fall apart” in paragraph 2. mean?
4.How fast could the Rocket go?
5.Why do you think different people have continued working hard to develop the locomotive?

An experiment carried out at Newcastle University aimed at reducing the number of bike thefts has produced some unusual results. The most efficient way of stopping people from stealing bikes seems almost too simple to be true. If you want to persuade thieves not to act, make them feel they’re being watched!
Posters showing a large pair of eyes were put up near three bike racks at the university, while other bike racks had no posters. The researchers explained that the number of thefts decreased by 62 per cent compared to the previous year at racks with posters. However, at the other racks, thefts actually increased by 63 per cent. Experts claim that clearly visible images of eyes make people feel they’re being watched. They say that we all care what other people think about us and that’s why we behave better when we think someone is looking. Now officials have agreed to carry out similar projects at train stations all over the country.
The “giant eyes” poster isn’t the only unusual method being used to try and fight crime on UK streets. In the East Midlands city of Leicester, police are inviting people to make large woolly balls and hang them up in trees around the area. They hope that these colourful additions to neighbourhoods will help create a safer place to live. The thinking behind the idea is that if you create a pleasant environment, people are more likely to behave better. “We live in a world where our every move is being watched by CCTV cameras”, one of the organisers told us. “The cameras are there to deter (威慑) possible criminals, but they come at a price, and many people don’t like being watched 24 hours a day. We believe there’s another way. We want to encourage people to take more pride in where they live.”
However, not all residents are happy—many refuse to believe it will make any difference. They’re demanding that the police do more to reduce trouble in the area. One local resident told us, I recommend that the police stop wasting their time on mad plans like this and do some real policing. We need to see more policemen walking around our streets, especially at night.
1.What is the most efficient way of persuading thieves not to act?
2.Where were the “giant eyes” posters placed?
3.Why did the number of thefts decrease at racks with posters?
4.What are the disadvantages of CCTV cameras?
5.What does “this” in the last paragraph refer to?
6.Do you believe the second method will work? Why or why not?
(22-23八年级上·上海奉贤·期中)Agatha Christie (阿加莎·克里斯蒂) is one of the most popular writers of all time. About four billion copies of her books have been sold. And they have been translated into 103 languages. She is often called the queen of the “whodunit”. A whodunit is a story that starts with a crime (犯罪), usually murder (凶杀).Then the main character of the story tries to discover who did it (or who-done-it). Readers love Agatha Christie’s stories because there are lots of clues and puzzles for them to think about as they read. Her two most famous characters are the Belgian detective Hercule Poirot and the elderly amateur (业余的) detective Miss Marple. Christie always wrote about places that she knew, like Torquay, the English town where she was born in 1890.
Agatha Christie died in 1976 but her books continue to be popular today. For one week every year, lovers of her stories can go to the Agatha Christie Festival in Torquay. People dress up in clothes from the 1920s and 1930s, like characters in her stories. Jazz bands play at tea parties and there are dinners on old trains and at old country houses. “Murder” is everywhere, and visitors have a lot of fun trying to discover who the “killer” is—or whodunit.

Time Temp Glasses
Are you a person who wants to know the time and temperature during the day? You might like Time Temp Glasses. These special glasses show the time above your right eye and the temperature above your left eye. It is surely easier than wearing a wristwatch, and you never have to guess the temperature.
Alarm Fork
Do you eat too quickly? Do you eat too much? How can the Alarm Fork help you? Aren’t you curious? Well, this special fork has two lights: one green and one red. When the green light is on, it’s OK to take a bite of food. The fork “knows” when you take a bite, and soon the red light goes on. Wait for the green light before you take another bite.
Smell This
How do you know if your breath smells nice, or if it smells bad? It’s difficult to know, because it’s very hard to smell the air that comes out of your own mouth. Smell This is useful for this situation. Smell This covers your nose and your mouth, so it is easy to smell the air that comes out of your mouth. Does your breath smell nice, or do you need a piece of gum?
Banana Suitcase
Had this ever happened to you? You put a banana in your lunch bag in the morning, and when you open the bag at noon, the banana looks like someone drove a car over it. If you put your banana in the Banana Suitcase, this will never happen. It keeps a banana safe, delicious and looking like a banana!
1.How many funny inventions are mentioned in the passage?
2.When you wear Time Temp Glasses, can you see the time or the temperature above your left eye?
3.What should you do when the red light on Alarm Fork goes on?

(21-22八年级上·上海虹口·期中)An old song says that “love makes the world go around”. If you watch Americans on Valentine’s Day, you can believe it. The whole country breaks out with little red hearts. Love-struck people give cards, flowers and candy to their sweethearts. You might call it an annual celebration of love.
The American concept of love and romance begins with dating. Young people date in several ways. At first they might have group dates with several boys and girls together. Later, they start going on single date — just one boy and one girl. Sometimes a boy and a girl will go to see a film. Maybe they will go to a party at a friend’s house. Or they might go out to eat.
A friend might even arrange a blind date for you with someone you don’t know. That doesn’t mean you keep your eyes closed the whole evening! You just don’t know who your partner will be until the time of the date. If someone asks you out on any kind of date, and you don’t want to go, you may politely say, “No, thanks.”
Americans view dating differently from people in other countries. American young people see a date as a time just to have fun. They don’t always have a romantic interest in mind. Someone may go out with one person this week, and another the next. After a while, a boy and a girl may decide they want to go steady. This means they think of each other as boyfriend and girlfriend. It also means they don’t want to date anyone else. Romance begins to bloom.
Romance love is very much a part of American culture. Movies, TV shows and books in America all picture people falling in love. Americans know no romance is perfect, but still they try to find the ideal person. Actually, love is a part of every culture, not just American culture. People all over the world search for happiness in a loving relationship. Maybe love does make the world go around.
Please answer the following questions in COMPLETE sentences.
1.In America, what do people give to their sweethearts on Valentine’s Day?
2.Young people in America date in different ways, don’t they?
3.What does “a blind date” mean?
4.When does romance begin to bloom according to Paragraph 4?
5.What do you think makes the world go around? Why?

Yesterday the police and more than 20 volunteers started to search for the two missing teenagers, Vicky Gray and Tom Hunter, and their guide, Gavin Jones. The police said they had disappeared during an adventure tour of Cape York Peninsula.
This was the second day of the search and it was getting dark. The police were now very worried about the safety of the missing people.
The police said that the search had covered a wide area, but the rainforest was thick and the recent rain made their work harder. Later on, the police officer Roger Fleet said, “The travellers had a radio with them. If they had been in trouble, they would have called us.”
The travellers left Cooktown before daybreak on Saturday morning in a Toyota car. They took a small dirt road that runs down to the Daintree River, a dangerous river full of crocodiles. Roger said the tourists wouldn’t have got into trouble if they had stayed on the main road.
The police found a photo of Vicky and Tom under the “Be Careful about Crocodiles” sign near the river. Why was the photo left behind? This is just one of the unanswered questions. Other questions are: Why was the Toyota parked and locked at the edge (边缘) of the rainforest? The police said that the travellers had left a map of the area behind. What does it mean? If anyone can give information or has seen these young people, contact the local police in Cooktown.
1.How many people disappeared during the adventure tour?
2.What made the search of the missing people even harder?
3.How did the travellers leave Cooktown on Saturday morning?
4.Which didn’t the police find, a touring map, the travellers’ photo or the travellers’ radio?

(23-24八年级上·上海宝山·期中)A couple of years ago, I came to a lady’s house to buy some vitamins. When entering the house, I noticed that there was an electronic keyboard on the shelf, leaning against the wall. Being a piano music lover and player, I asked if the woman could play. She said “Yes” and added that she had been taking lessons—at age 54! I told her that it was very impressive of her to have passion (激情) for playing the piano.
Then she asked me the same question. “I have been playing for 8 years now,” I answered. “Then you must play a song for me before you leave,” she said. I thought she was kidding and I simply smiled. But by the end of the purchase (购买) of the vitamins, she reminded me of our musical “deal”. She showed me an old piano in the living room and asked me to play a song for her. I thought for a moment and decided to play David Lanz’s “Return to the Heart”, since she had so much passion for music, and it’s one of my soul-searching song.
I played the song to the best of my ability, and with as much emotions pouring into it as possible. She loved it. I was about to step out of the door, I heard a weak voice calling out, “Young man!” I turned around. And there was an old lady taking one little step at a time with the help of another woman. “I wanted to come out to thank you for the beautiful song that you played. I have been very sick, and it’s very hard for me to get off my bed, but I really wanted to thank you for the song. It made me feel good…” she said. With that, she turned around and walked slowly back to her room.
I was deeply touched by her thanks and felt a deeper understanding for the song. It served its purpose beautifully, returning to one’s heart for peace and joy.

Once again, my experiment had refused to work. I felt hopeless. A few months earlier, when I started the project, I was confident. I believed I could make it if I worked hard enough. So I spent over 10 hours in the lab every day. When the experiment failed, I simply worked harder. Yet here I was, working harder than ever—but not getting anywhere. I didn’t know what to do.
It was late in the evening. One other person was still in the lab, and he noticed my worried look. He came over and asked how I was doing. I told him about my problems. After we talked through the experiment, he said, “I think it’s time to go home and get some sleep.” “Taking a break is also hard work, you know,” he added with a smile.
Those words opened my eyes. I no longer overworked myself in the lab. I felt less stressed (有压力的) and my research started to progress (进展).
A few years later, my professor and I were discussing an age-old problem at a cafe. As he finished his coffee, he said, “We need to work smarter, not harder.” I felt kind of surprised. I had never heard my professor say anything like this.
Our conversation that day helps me understand that exciting ideas seldom come from a mind under pressure. My best ideas always come after I have allowed my mind to relax—whether that’s cooking a nice dinner or going on long hikes with my brother.
Today, I try to pass this idea on to my own students. _______________________________________.

Even I have something to do. I decorate the desert with these beautiful trails as I pull my tail along. But you can do nothing.”

But just then, a beautiful flower opened from the cactus’ head like a crown.

(21-22八年级上·上海徐汇·期中)Most great inventors often met with much trouble in their work. Before they could succeed, they had to overcome thousands of difficulties which were put in their way. The following is one of such examples.
George Stephenson (1781~1848), a famous British inventor, made the first train in 1825, using a steam engine. When he was experimenting with the engine on the train, he met with troubles from the government, the newspapers and the gentlemen in the country. They said that the noise and the smoke would kill cows, horses and sheep, that the engine would burst or that the hot coals from it would set fire to their houses. People believed what they said. George Stephenson told the people that train could go on small rails, could pull carriages full of goods and passengers and that there was no great danger to them. It was a very difficult matter for him to make them believe. However, after some time, he was able to do it, and the first train that was driven by Stephenson himself proved what he had said. On the train there was a new steam engine. It was invented by him, and was proved a complete success.
The first day when the train ran on the rails, people along the way heard the noise of the train in the distance, and saw it running quickly to them. They thought it was a ghost. They ran quickly back home for fear and closed their doors tightly. They did not dare to come out until it had passed. A week later an old woman still said that her hen had been so frightened that it hadn’t laid any eggs for three days.

Do you have the courage to climb mountains? Do you have a clear head to stay calm in an emergency (危急)? Would you know what to do if somebody broke their leg?
Tamsen Bell, an eighteen-year-old girl from California in America, can answer yes to all those questions. She joined the Marine Search and Rescue Team when she was only 14 years old—the youngest age you can do this. She spent the hardest time in the team. She had to be trained for 60 hours to learn about first aid, climbing, map reading and rescue methods before she began to help others. But she achieved a lot from her teacher and teammates. The training gave her the confidence to do the job. Now she is one of 20 youth volunteers in the rescue team whose motto (座右铭) is “Any time, any place, any weather.” They are often called out in the middle of the night to help people who have got into trouble in the wild countryside of California. So she usually had to stay up and got up early the next morning.
When Tamsen was 16 years old, she helped to rescue an old woman who had fallen 50 feet down a steep cliff (陡峭悬崖). The woman broke her neck and couldn’t move. What’s more, it was snowing heavily that afternoon and she had to cover the old lady with her own clothes. She had to stay with the lady for 8 hours until the rescue team could lift her carefully back up the mountain to safety. The next day she had to lie in bed because of the bad cold.
It’s tough work, but Tamsen thinks it’s worth it. She says “The best part of the job is ______________________________________.”

After a few months, dad wrote us a letter saying he was fine and happy. That letter, and its many fellows(伙伴) down the years, all with the same words, kept coming to our doors for 11 years.
【答案】1.Yes, it was. 2.Richard Trevithick (built the first steam locomotive). 3.To break into pieces. 4.(It could reach up to) 29 miles per hour. 5.Because people want to widely use the locomotive in transporting goods.
【导语】本文是记叙文,介绍了不同时代的人们对于火车头的改造。

(22-23八年级上·上海杨浦·期中)Getting Creative with crime
【答案】1.Making them feel they’re being watched. 2.Near three bike racks at the university. 3.Because clearly visible images of eyes make people feel they’re being watched. 4.The cameras come at a price, and many people don’t like being watched 24 hours a day. 5.It refers to inviting people to make large woolly balls and hang them up in trees around the area. 6.No, I don’t. Because it is useless.
