A different kind of school in Pakistan is giving poor children, and even their mothers and grandmothers, a new chance to get an education (教育).
The programme is called Street to School. It is a way to keep these children off the streets, while providing them with a basic education and useful life skills. Organizers started it in 2014 to set up a school for children who played on the streets every day while their parents were working. Mohammad Hassan, the founder of the programme, says children who spend all day on the streets are in danger of catching dangerous illnesses and could also be caught up in crime (犯罪).
This programme centers on reading, writing and maths. Students are also taught English as well as the local language, Urdu. Street to School also includes sports activities and provides students with information on how to stay healthy and take care of themselves.
Street to School managed to get children off the streets. And running the school also taught Hassan another great need in the community. “We started this programme for kids, but we found very quickly the kids would bring their homework without parents’ signatures (签字). That meant kids were not getting the needed help at home to do their homework. So we decided to develop a special course for these parents.”
Tahira Bibi is a grandmother who has always worked as a clothes maker and never got the chance to attend school. She cannot read or write. She says watching her grandchildren pushes her to act. “When I watched my grandson and granddaughter studying. I also developed an interest in learning. I believe that learning has no ending.”

We hear a lot about how we should change our lives to help save our planet. Jim Barnes, 15, from Oxford, talks about what his family does every day to save the planet.
A common UK family produces more than one ton of rubbish a year. Some of this waste takes hundreds of years to decay. We also spend lots of money buying new things to replace the things we throw away.
So to help save the planet and save money, our family has decided to recycle everything. We collect used things, such as paper and bottles, and put them into different bins. After they are treated in the recycling place they can be used again. This will help reduce (减少) a lot of waste. We’re also going to grow our own vegetables and we already keep hens. Soon, we can eat our own eggs for breakfast.
In a year, a family like ours uses about 4,800 kWh (4,800度电) for watching television, taking showers, using the dishwasher and the washing machine, and more. This is a lot. To produce this much energy, a lot of pollution is created. This pollution can cause health problems and global warming.
Because of all this, ▲ . We stopped using the dishwasher. We watch less TV and use low energy light bulbs now. Mom also tries to save energy while cooking.
What’s more, we try to use our car less to cut down on air pollution. My dad organizes a car pool (拼车) with our neighbors and they take turns driving to work. And I ride my bicycle to school. How cool is that?!
23.What is the passage mainly about?
A.Jim’s colorful and different life. B.There is much pollution in the city.
C.How to get on well with the neighbors. D.What Jim’s family does to save the planet.

A.we usually use these machines B.we hope to do something to keep warm
C.we decided to do something to save electricity D.we tried our best to reduce rubbish
26.Why does Jim’s father organize a car pool with neighbors?
A.Because they live in the countryside.
B.Because it’s fun to go to work together.
C.Because he wants to cut down on air pollution.
D.Because he thinks it’s a good way to help each other.

Weddings (婚礼) create a lot of leftover flowers. To Eleanor Love, that means more chances to collect after-wedding bouquets (花束) and give them to her lonely hospital patients, many of whom don’t often get visitors, let alone expensive flowers.
The flowers are still in good shape, and the patients are overjoyed to have them.
“I broke down and cried,” recalled patient Connie Melzer, who was recovering (康复) from a heart problem at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Medical Center in Richmond when Love walked into her room with a bouquet in early 2020.
“When you’re in hospital for six to eight weeks, it really means a lot,” said Melzer.
Love worked at the VCU Hospital as a medical student. She wanted to help ease the suffering of patients as well as learning to treat them as a student doctor.
“One of the challenges of being a medical student is that it can be very difficult to help.” said Love. “You are there as a leaner, but you don’t have the same knowledge as doctors. How can I at this stage help patients?”
So in 2019, she started The Simple Sunflower Project in Richmond, and so far has delivered (递送) more than 760 bouquets to patients. She brought her schoolmates into her project. People beyond (在……之外) the VCU community who heard about the project also joined. Now Love has more than 200 volunteers on the email list.
For each wedding, Love would organize a team of eight volunteers to help pick up the flowers when the party was over and then delivered them to patients. “It’s so satisfying to see the patients who receive our bouquets and it reminds me why we do what we do,” she said.

I just tell her what I think of the way she looks. Sometimes it’s ‘great’. And sometimes it’s ‘awful’.”可知,妈妈现在已经习惯和作者商量穿着,所以,此处表达的是:在妈妈穿什么之前,先和作者商量一下对妈妈来说是自然的事情。故选C。

How time flies! I am in Grade Nine now. Since primary school, I’ve changed a lot.
In the past, I had short hair, because my mother didn’t allow me to have long hair. But now I have long hair. And I have grown taller and stronger than before. When I was in primary school, I was shy. Now I am active and outgoing. So I make many new friends in junior high school. I become kind and helpful. I take my study more seriously. In the past, I often played computer games after school. Now after school, I always read books. On weekends, I often go shopping with my best friends. It’s relaxing and we have a good time.
Looking back on everything I have gone through over the years, I am very grateful for the people and things that have helped me become better. I hope I can do better in the future.
