I consider myself technologically capable,or at least
I used to!However, shopping with my husband the other
day clearly showed Im being left behind by the times.
Finishing picking lots of goods in Carrefour
Supermarket,we walked toward the checkout counters,
noticing few people there. In fact, despite all the lights
above the counters on,showing open, there was no
cashier(收银员). Walking to a deserted counter,like an
ATM machine,I saw it was brandnew. On the other side of
it was a long moving belt leading down to a kind of island.
When I placed my shopping cart near the machine,it
monitored my presence and spoke to me in a soft woman
voice,“Please slide your card on the front glass.”
“OK,”I thought.“I can do this.”But my husband
thought we should find somebody to walk us through this
new process.
“Are you kidding?”I said.“Relax!Ill have us out
of here within seconds.”
“Please slide your card on the front glass,”she
asked again, except that this time she sounded a little
impatient. Were they programmed to annoy customers?
I swiped (刷)my card down the cardslider on the
side of the machine and it asked me to do it on the front
glass. I thought I must have slid my card upside down so I
turned and swiped it again down that slider. Then the
notsoniceanymorecomputermachine lady told me I
needed help. Honest to God,that was what she said;she
said I needed somebodys help.
A store assistant noticed this, coming over and I told
him there was something wrong with the machine for its
not taking my card. He took my card and slid it on the
glass beside the slider I had been using. Then the
machinelady asked me to scan my goods. The assistant
asked if I needed any more help.“No!”I suggested they
should program the machine more precisely. He smiled
and walked away.
It worked well,so I decided to show my husband I
could scan the rest faster. I was doing well when the belt
suddenly stopped and began to move backward. The
machinelady told me to rescan because of an overload on
the belt.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
What was worse,a wine bottle fell and broke,
making me so annoyed.
After the assistant helped us out,I turned to my
husband.

“We set out for Dover and Calais in ten minutes,”
Fogg announced. A puzzled grin appeared on
Passepartouts round face:clearly he had not understood.
“Monsieur is going to leave home?”“Yes,”replied
Phileas Fogg. “We are going around the world.”
Passepartouts eyes widened. He raised his eyebrows,
held up his hands and seemed about to collapse.“Round
the world!”he murmured. “In eighty days,”responded
Mr. Fogg.“So we dont have a moment to lose,”“But the
cases?”gasped Passepartout.“We wont have any cases,”
Fogg replied.“Only a bag with two shirts and three pairs
of stockings for me in it,and the same for you. Well buy
our clothes on the way. Bring down my raincoat and
traveling cloak, and some strong shoes, although we will
do little walking. Hurry up!”
Passepartout tried to reply, but he could not. He
mechanically began to make preparations for departure.
Around the world in eighty days! Was his master a fool?
No. Was this a joke,then?They were going to Dover;
good!To Calais;good again!After all,Passepartout,
who had been away from France for five years, wouldnt
be sorry to set foot in his own country again. Perhaps they
would go as far as Paris, and it would do his eyes good to
see Paris once again.
By eight oclock Passepartout had packed the bag.
Then, still feeling troubled,he went down to see Mr.
Fogg. Mr. Fogg was completely ready. Under his arm was
a book containing timetables showing the arrival and
departure of steamboats and trains. He took the bag,
opened it,and slipped a roll of notes into it.“You havent
forgotten anything?”Fogg asked. “Nothing,Monsieur.”
“My raincoat and cloak?”“Here they are.”“Good!”
“Take this bag,”Fogg said, handing it to
Passepartout. “Take good care of it because there are
twenty thousand pounds in it.”Passepartout nearly
dropped the bag,as if the twenty thousand pounds were
in gold, and weighed him down. Passepartout and his
master then left the house and at the end of Saville Row
they took a taxi and drove rapidly to Charing Cross.
(Adapted from Around the World in Eighty Days,by
Jules Verne)

Bob Shahmardi was 4 years old when he developed a
severe disease. Success rates of the disease were relatively
low at that time, but his family was lucky to live in a
community that was helpful when they didnt have many
resources and it was at that time that MakeAWish
stepped in. Through that organization, the Shahmardi
family got to enjoy a trip to Walt Disney World Resort in
Florida. Then the 4yearold hugged a character actor as
part of a wish granted to him and his family by the
organization.“It wasnt just going on a trip. It was more
about how we got through that hard time. It was fun for
me,but it was a lifeline for my parents,”said Bob.
Thirty years later,Bob and his wife,Jill Welch,
decided to turn their wedding into a fundraiser for the
MakeAWish Foundation. Their wedding guests financed
two wishes for local children, more being planned. Many
donated generously to the cause, spending more,
perhaps, than they might have if they had bought the
couple a wedding gift like fine china or a kitchen
appliance. Bob said their donation to the MakeAWish
Foundation isnt going to be “one and done”. The two
plan on continuing to contribute more.
Gloria Jetter Crockett, president and chief executive
officer of the organization, said she felt it amazing to have
someone who benefited come back to pay it forward to
other kids looking for wishes.
Contrary to the popular belief,Gloria stressed that
wishes arent given to critically ill children as a “last
wish”,but are given as a part of the treatment process.
The organization granted at least 165 wishes last year.
This year Gloria hopes to grant somewhere between 199
and 299 wishes,depending on funding.
8. Which of the following helped Bob realize his wish? B
A. The hospital. B. MakeAWish.
C. The community. D. Disney World.
9. What made Bobs wedding special? A
A. Collecting money for local kids.
B. Receiving expensive gifts.
C. The attendance of officials.
D. The number of the guests.
10. What does the underlined part “one and done”in
Paragraph 2 mean? A
A. Oneoff. B. Nonstop.
C. Sizable. D. Personal.
11. What did Gloria think of the wish given to Bob? C
A. It was a fun experience.
B. It was a lifeline.
C. It was a certain treatment.
D. It was a last wish.
My heart went out to the drama teacher I read about in a recent news item. Each parent from her class insisted
that she cast their own child as Snow White. This reminded me of my seventh grade musical—“The Adventures of
Tom Sawyer”. I desperately wanted to play the role of Becky, the female lead who was Toms girlfriend. 1. B
For starters,Becky had to sing numerous solos, and I couldnt carry a tune. I also didnt have long blonde curls
like pretty Linda Wright who won the part.
I was assigned the nonsinging role of Miss Watson, the maid. I had to wear an ugly dress. And I had only one
line to learn,“Thats what I say.”2. F Miss Watson was onstage in quite a few scenes, and got to repeat “Thats
what I say”throughout the play.
—105—
At last, our production was put onstage. Imagine my surprise when Miss Watson made the audience laugh out
loud each time I piped with “Thats what I say”. I hadnt known that she—or I—could be funny,or that her character
was important in moving the plot along. 3. D
That night,I began to understand that being the star may not be any more fun than being a standout in a
supporting role. Each person, onstage and backstage,is essential in theater. Without everyone doing their part, the
play would be dull as dishwater. 4. A If everyone is a star, then nothing gets done. Its all noise and chaos.
And so I believe all children should get the opportunity to play Miss Watson,to become someone they didnt
know they wanted to be. 5. G
A. So it is in life.
B. It was not to be.
C. It was anything but a great part.
D. My Miss Watson turned out to be a hit.
E. It took the entire cast to make a good show.
F. There was an advantage,in my opinion,though.
G. I would hope all children could be a hit in life.

“He was hungry and poor, but he was truly an honest man,”her
husband said with a trembling voice, embarrassment written in his red
face. On hearing the words, the woman sat there ashamed, feeling her
face burning. How could she be angry with such a kind and responsible
man?She rose from her chair,and hesitated for a moment,wondering
how to hide her inner embarrassment. Then, she dropped her eyes and
stared at her feet, hoping no one would notice how embarrassed she
was. Like a child who had made a mistake, she even had no courage to
look into her husbands eyes.

故选A。
故填to send。
3. was displayed
model of the rocket和动词display是被动关系,所以谓语动词用
was displayed。
故填its。
故填with。
句子结构和意思可知,此处new rocket for manned mission是特
故填the。
capsule and a lunar lander”指物,关系词在定语从句中作主语,用
故填which。
