Advice on Writing from Famous Writers
Hilary Mantel-a little pride can be a great help
The most helpful quality a writer can develop is self-confidence, if you can manage it.
”
You write to impress yourself on the world, and you have to believe in your own ability
when the world shows no sign of agreeing with you
Leo Tolstoy-pick the hours that work best for you
Tolstoy believed in starting first thing:"I always write in the morning. I was pleased
to hear lately that Rousseau, too, after he got up in the morning, went for a short walk
2斑
and sat down to work. In the morning one's head is particularly fresh. The best thoughts
most often come in the morning after waking while you are still in bed or during the walk."
·William Faulkner-read to write
由
Read, read, read evervthing-rubbish, classics, good and bad, and see how they dc
it. Just like a carpenter (木匠) who works as a beginner and studies under the master.
Read! You'll take it in. Then write. If it is good, you'll find out. If it's not, throw it out of
the window.
105
Katherine Mansfield-writing anything is better than nothing
Looking back, I imagine I was always writing. Even it was rubbish. But it's far better
to write rubbish or anything than nothing at all.
1. What should you have in writing according to Hilary Mantel?

B. Rich knowledge.

2. What did Leo Tolstoy and Rousseau have in common?

B. They chose to write in the morning
C. They started to work while in bed.
D. They got up at the best time

Vegetable gardening is the relaxing(放松)art and science of turning a love for growing
plants into a worthwhile activity.
Vegetable gardeners agree that many home-grown vegetables picked at their best are
better than those vegetables bought from markets. From spring through late fall, a well
planned and well-kept garden can provide a supply of fresh vegetables, thus increasing the
nutrition of the family diet. Freezers make it possible to keep some of the vegetables to be
enjoyed at a later date. Other vegetables can be stored for a few months in a cool area.
Having vegetables in the backyard makes home gardening attractive to many people.
Besides, vegetable gardening provides exercise and fun for families.
Though the money spent for a garden may be little, one can't escape the fact that
gardening needs hard work and time. Many of the gardening tasks must be performed at
times that are most inconvenient. Not doing jobs that should be done regularly may result in
failure and a negative(消极的)feeling
One should not plant a garden that is too large for him to care for. A small well-kept
garden is more enjoyable and profitable(有益的)than a large one. Vegetables do well in full
sunlight and need at least five or six hours of sun during the middle of the day. Too much
shading results in poor plants and few vegetables. If possible, the garden should be near the
house so the gardener can work in it at irregular moments.
Usually the home owner has little choice in the soil type he can choose. Fortunately.
many vegetables can be grown on poor soils if the soils are properly prepared.

4. Home-grown vegetables
A. have to be eaten as soon as they are picked
B. sell well in market because of their good quality(质量)
C. picked at the right moment are more nutritious than those bought from the market

5. The underlined word "performed"(Paragraph 4) can be replaced by
A. worked out
B. acted out
C. operated out
D. carried out
6. The writer suggests that an ideal(理想的)vegetable garden should
A. be sunny
B. be beyond walking distance
C. be large-sized
D. be made up of full soil
7. From the passage we can conclude that
A. vegetables need little care while growing
B. vegetables can be grown in almost any kind of soil
C. vegetable gardening is necessary for people
D. vegetable gardening is a good pastime for the old
C
As prices and building costs keep rising, the“do-it-yourself”(DIY)trend(趋势)in the
U. S. continues to grow.
“We needed furniture for our living room," says John Ross,"and we just didn't have
enough money to buy it. So we decided to try making a few tables and chairs."John got
married six months ago, and like many young people these days, they are struggling to
make a home at a time when the cost of living is very high. The Rosses took a 2-week
course(课程) for $ 28o at a night school. Now they build all their furniture and make
repairs around the house.
Jim Hatfield has three bovs and his wife died. He has a full-time job at home as well as in a
shoemaking factory. Last month, he received a car repair bill for $42o. "I was deeply upset
about it. Now I've finished a car repair course, I should be able to fix the car by myself."
John and Jim are not unusual people. Most families in the country are doing everything
they can to save money, so they can fight the high cost of living. If you want to become a
"do-it-yourselfer", you can go to DIY classes. And for those who don't have time to take a
course, there are books that tell you how you can do things yourself.
