Hello, everyone. Today, I’ll talk about how to
improve your pronunciation. Language researchers
say pronunciation and fluency are the biggest barriers,
followed by grammar in effective spoken English.
rHowever, most people don’t regard pronunciation
as a very important part of communication skills.
They are more focused on vocabulary. One reason
is that most people are not even aware of their
mispronunciations, sso it’s important to first find out
the words you mispronounce. You should listen to
experts. By experts, I mean those who are less likely
to make pronunciation mistakes. When listening to
them, pay attention to words that sound strange. Strange
because you pronounce the same words differently.
When you come across such words, check a dictionary
to confirm their exact pronunciations. You can also
search for difficult-to-pronounce words and names and
make a list of them. tThe last suggestion is to read
aloud. Now you’ve got the correct pronunciations
of the words, it’s time to practice reading them
every day.

Text 1
M: Did you go to the football game yesterday?
W: No, I couldn’t make it. I was stuck in the lab.
M: You missed a really good game. Our school team
played very well.
Text 2
W: Did you hear the weather forecast for tomorrow? Is it
going to be windy?
M: No. There will be high clouds in the morning and
heavy showers in the afternoon and evening.
Text 3
M: Hey, let’s go for a picnic somewhere this weekend.
W: Good idea. Can Jack go with us? He’s studied hard
for his exam in the past two weeks.
M: I don’t think so. He’s going on a trip this weekend
with his school.
Text 4
M: Hello, is this Emma? This is Robert Allen from
Johnson’s Electronics.
W: Hello, Robert. What can I do for you?
M: It’s this visit by Mr. Johnson. I’m afraid he’s had
an emergency and won’t be able to make it this
time.
Text 5
M: You’ve been waiting long?
W: No, just two minutes. How was the flight?
M: It was fine, thanks. I slept through the whole flight
actually and I feel much better.
Text 6
M: I’m starving. What are we having for dinner tonight,
Jane?
W: I’m not sure. Something will come to mind once I
start.
M: I feel like eating French Fries, or maybe a ham
sandwich. How about you?
W: gActually, I was thinking of making something
healthy, say... fish and vegetables.
M: gWell, in that case, I’ll have whatever you make.
Text 7
W: hHello, George. I’ve heard that you’re going to
Milan for a business trip next week.
M: hYes, Susan, I’m also planning a trip to Rome for
sightseeing after that.
W: Oh. I’m just back from Rome. The city has made
some new rules.
M: Really? What rules?
83
W: For example, people who dress up as Roman soldiers
in charge for photos won’t be allowed near hot
tourist spots. And street performers can’t sing or play
loud music on public transport. Another rule bans
tourists from eating in public places.
M: That’s good. Eating in public is inappropriate and can
lead to littering.
W: Rome isn’t the only city to do that. iLast year,
Florence made a rule saying that tourists could
face fines of up to 500 euros if caught eating in
the street.
M: jWow, that’s big money, but it’s understandable.
Text 8
W: kHi, Frank. I heard you are going to withdraw
from the speech class. Can you tell me why?
M: Well, Ms. McDaniel, I don’t think I can make it.
Public speaking scares me. I just can’t get in front of
a group and talk.
W: What is it that you fear about speaking in front of a
group?
M: I’m afraid I’ll look silly if I forget a word or say
something stupid, or if I shake, turn red.
W: What would happen if you did one of these things?
M: People would laugh at me.
W: Well, Frank. Your fear is really not based on fact.
lI once asked my students what they would
do if someone in class forgot a word or made
a mistake. They said they would feel bad for
the speaker, for they knew they would be in the
speaker’s shoes some day. Does that make you feel
better?
M: Yeah. I guess.
W: I hope you’ll stay in the class, and try a bit more.
M: Okay. Thanks, Ms. McDaniel.
Text 9
M: nHow many applications did we get, Mary?
W: nWell, overall we’ve got over 200.
M: nWow, that many?
W: Yes, but most of which we can reject right away.
People who don’t have the right experience,
qualifications, that kind of thing.
M: Of course.
W: oAnd so, I drew up a short list of 12 candidates.
M: oAre we going to interview all of them?
W: oI think we should. But certainly, I’ll let you have a
look first.
M: Great. So, who have we got then?
W: Well, I think we’ve got some pretty strong
candidates. Two in particular.
M: They have the right kind of qualification?
W: I certainly say so. A strong educational background,
experience in sales, language skills...
M: Good. Look forward to meeting all of them.
W: pSo, I’d say we’ll do the standard interview for
that.
M: Sure.
W: pA few general questions, then onto specifics. We
could also ask them to give a short presentation.
M: Great. I’m really looking forward to this.

Welcome back, everyone. This is CBA News Radio.
Here comes something interesting. qrYesterday, a
teenage girl named Terra Gallo, from Cumberland,
got some unexpected news when she received a
handwritten letter from a fisherman saying that
her message in a bottle had been found in Spain.
sGallo and her sister put messages into bottles and
threw them into the ocean while visiting their aunt
on Monhegan Island three years ago. The girls had
forgotten about the bottles until they were surprised by
the fisherman’s letter. sGallo, now 14, studied maps
84
and discovered her message traveled about 3,000
miles. tGallo’s message asked that whoever found
her bottle should put their own message inside with
hers and send it back out to sea. The fisherman said
in his letter that he had carried out her wishes.

M: Ryan didn’t go to work yesterday. He was running a
fever and had to go to the hospital.
W: Oh, really? I thought he was watching football with
his friends.
Text 2
W: I’ve sent out the invitations for the dinner party.
M: That’s good. Now what should we do?
W: We’ve got to plan the menu.
M: OK. Do you have anything in mind?
Text 3
W: Excuse me. Could you please take a picture of me
with this camera?
M: No problem. Do I have to focus it?
W: No, all you have to do is point and press the button.
M: All right. Say “Cheese”.
Text 4
M: Oh no! I can’t find my mobile phone.
W: Didn’t you use it at the supermarket to call your
friend?
M: Yes, I did. I must have left it at the cashier’s desk.
W: Don’t worry. Let’s drive back to find it.
Text 5
W: What about going for a bike ride?
M: Is it still raining?
W: No, but it’s still dull. Let’s hang on for half an hour
or so. It may clear up then.
Text 6
M: I thought your flight would arrive two hours ago.
What took so long?
W: Didn’t they announce that our flight was delayed?
M: I didn’t hear anything about a delay. I thought
everything was running on time. What happened?
W: fWe got on the plane on time but then we were
held up for almost two hours due to an unknown
problem.
M: That’s too bad. Have you had anything to eat?
W: I managed to get a sandwich on the plane. How
about you?
M: I’ve had nothing but a cup of coffee. I’m starving.
Let’s get out of here and find a restaurant.
Text 7
M: Lisa, how do you get your news every day?
W: Well, I get most of my news from TV. I also read
newspapers. Radio is my last choice and I seldom go
online. How about you?
M: I hardly listen to the radio either, hbut I do love
reading news on the Internet.
W: You should be careful with the information online.
Much of it cannot be trusted at all. By the way, what
type of news are you interested in?
M: iI mainly focus on sports news. What about you?
W: I enjoy watching quite a number of news programs
on TV. Many of them center on business, art and
international politics.
M: jWell, I have a feeling that the news reporters on
TV usually say similar things based on the same
information. And some of the news is very sad.
W: I know what you mean. But you have to keep up with
what’s happening around the world, even though it
makes you feel bad sometimes.
