M: Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to
Danny Show. I’m Danny. Let’s meet our first guest.
W: Hi, everyone. My name is Jane Couch. And I’m a
professional boxer.
M: Tell us Jane, how did you take up boxing?
W: Um... nYears ago, I saw a film about women
boxing in America, and I thought “Wow,
amazing! I’m going to have a go.” I didn’t ever
think I’d be any good, but I’ll keep faith in that.
M: Were you always a sporty girl at school?
W: When I was younger, I was very unfit. I never used
to do any sports.
M: What do your family and your friends think of you as
a woman boxer?
W: oWhen I first told everyone I was going to do
boxing, they just thought I was mad. It was like
“you can’t do that, women don’t box.”
M: How do you prepare for a match?
W: What I do: pI come to the training camp to
prepare for a match. So, I come like eight to ten
weeks before each match. Just spend the first few
weeks getting into shape, and then on six weeks
out, we start going into full-time training twice a
day, sometimes three times a day.
M: What’s the best thing about being a professional
boxer?
W: Um... qCertainly, the fitness is the best side of it.
I mean, I’m fit and healthy and feel great in myself.
And I got like a lot of confidence as well. And like I
say, I met some great friends, too.

M: kHi, Nancy! You look worried. What’s wrong?
W: Well, Daniel, khave you ever felt nervous on stage?
M: Sure. Do you remember that play I was in a few
years ago? I knew my lines, but I was terrified to
have to recite them in front of an audience. As soon
as I saw the crowd of people down there, my heart
beat so fast that I was unable to say a single word.
W: mThat’s how I feel just thinking about the spelling
competition next week.
M: I didn’t know you made it to the finals.
W: I’m worried I’ll get nervous and freeze on stage. I
might forget how to spell everything, even my own
name. I don’t know what to do.
M: Nancy, I know that you’re not going to forget how to
spell your name. nI’ll help you get through this. I’ll
go to the school hall with you to practice. Then I’ll
teach you an exercise my baseball coach taught
me. Believe me, it works.
W: I feel much better now. Thanks, Daniel.

W: Hello, ladies and gentlemen! Today, we have
invited Professor Stone to talk about the role of
elderly people in our society. Welcome to our show,
Professor Stone.
M: To begin with, I’d like to tell a story from my own
life. Several years ago, when my grandparents were
well into their 80s, they were no longer able to care
for themselves very well. oMy grandfather was
afraid of leaving the only home they had known
for the past 60 years. The idea of having to sell
their home and move into a retirement home was an
extremely painful experience for them. pIndeed,
old age for them and many older Americans can
mean not only the possible failure of one’s health,

W: I was in Mallorca last week.

doctor. I’m afraid I can’t go to the class. Could you

worry about the class.

M: Marie, if no one takes care of your children while
you’re away, Jennifer and I will be glad to have them
stay with us.
W: That’s very kind of you, but they’ve already left for
their grandma’s. You know, Suzy lives close by.
Text 4
M: Hurry up with your food, Sally. They say there is a
big storm coming. We’d better get home before
that.
W: OK, I’m done. Let’s get back to the car. Could you
carry these shopping bags?
M: Oh, sure.
Text 5
M: We deep-fried fish three days ago in the kitchen

keep them in small bowls, then place the bowls in
the kitchen.

M: Yes. I go to the stadium whenever there is a good
game. fAnd if I can’t get a ticket, I watch the
game on TV. That way, they are less exciting
though.

but the loss of identity and self-worth.
W: Yes, it’s true. What do you have to say about the
problem of old age?
M: Many experts have given talks here that have focused
on the medical care and the development of public
services for senior citizens. qToday, I’d like to

tTalking about personal relationships, well, I’d
naturally think of my relationship with my mother.
Whenever I need help, my mother is always there for
me. rShe often tells me that I can be anyone I want
as long as I’m confident of myself. She sees my talent
and pushes me to do the best I possibly can. As I was
growing up, we were often on the move. sI had to
admit that moving so often made me feel lonely. But
my mother did everything she could to help me feel
happy. In fact, so much traveling was really a good thing
because it made us close. I respect my mother so much
as she never treats me as a child, but as an equal. She
gives me the freedom to make mistakes, and to learn
from them all. tUnlike friendships that can fade or
break, I know I’ll always be connected to my mother
no matter what I face. She is not just a role model, but
someone I love.
