She often talked about how exciting and interesting the experience was. So, even before finishing high school, Downey had decided to follow suit one day. Downey began studying architecture at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania in 2018. Near the end of her second year, she started to feel unhappy with her school and decided it was time to study abroad. US colleges and universities commonly have joint programs with foreign schools that permit student exchanges. These programs usually last half a school year or sometimes a whole school year. The classes students take abroad usually give them credits toward their degree. In a fouryeardegree program, the third year is the most common time for American college students to study abroad. Many students think they need a change before what is usually their final and most difficult year of study. Downey said her school did not want her to go at first. The architecture program at Lehigh was very intense, and her professors were worried she might miss learning important material. However, she was eventually able to get special permission to study internationally for a whole year. During the fall term in 2019, she attended a Danish international school in Copenhagen, Denmark, explaining she did so because Danish architects are well known for their housing design. Young adult as she was, she had to deal with travel documents and many other issues on her own. Overcoming the language barrier is the biggest challenge of studying abroad. However, she had a lot of emotional and financial support from her family. She learned life lessons and made friendships and memories that have lasted to this day. She said, “The more you're out of your comfort zone, the more rewarding the experience is in there.” 1.What does Downey's mother mean to Downey? A.A friend. B.A dreamer. C.An example. D.An expert. C。 2.What made Downey choose the Danish international school? A.The famous learned professors. B.The casual learning environment. C.The impressive academic reputation. D.The favorable geographical location. 根据第四段最后一句中的“she attended a Danish international school ... Danish architects are well known for their housing design”可知,Downey就读于丹麦哥本哈根的一所丹麦国际学校,她解释说她这样做是因为丹麦建筑师以房屋设计而闻名。 C。 3.What can we infer according to the last paragraph? A.It was not easy for Downey to study abroad. B.The comfortable life is likely to ruin the future life. C.Downey was too young to take care of herself. D.Downey's parents could hardly afford her education. 根据最后一段中的“she had to deal with travel documents and many other issues on her own. Overcoming the language barrier is the biggest challenge of studying abroad”可知,Downey不得不独自处理包括旅行证件在内的许多问题,还要克服出国留学的最大挑战——语言障碍。 A。 B A Walk In The Woods is one of the most unique and funny comedy books released (发行) in the last 25 years. The book follows the story of the author, Bill Bryson, recollecting his time spent on the Appalachian Trail with his old friend, Stephen Katz, going through all the struggles hiking a twothousand mile long trail. The book starts off with Bill Bryson randomly (随意地) deciding to go on the Appalachian Trail. He had decided that he wanted to hike the trail so that he would have an experience to write a book about. He invites his old friend Stephen Katz and this is where the story begins. I think that the way that he writes about the problems in a comedic (喜剧的) way makes me somehow care more about the problems. Whether he was talking about acid rain, invasive plants or the hunting of songbirds, he writes about the situations in a way that actually makes you care about them. In this book, he writes about the problem, gives all the reasons why it's a problem and everything that the problem affects, then only sometimes gives you a solution to the problem, which makes you actually think about the situations in the book. It is all a mix of humour and seriousness and it is a very unique way of getting the reader to actually care about problems. The two friends grow a lot throughout the course of the book. They learn that they are not necessarily as weak as they think they are, when they come out of the woods into the tourist trap of a town called Gatlinburg after spending hours hiking in the Smoky Mountains and they see all the tourists who are eating icecream and thinking that a halfmile walk through the center of town is the hardest thing they've ever done. They also learn that they are kind of okay at hiking because people are dropping out of the trail all the time around them, while Bryson and Katz just keep on powering through. In the end, this book completely exceeded (超越) my expectations when I read it. I had heard people say it was a good book, but I had never expected how good of a book it would be. The book is much better than the movie, so if you didn't like the movie, you will probably still like this book. If you liked the movie, you will love this book. Bill Bryson's humour mixed with the fact that this is a true story makes this book one of the best comedy books ever written. A Walk In The Woods(《林中漫步》)。 4.Why did Bill Bryson hike the Appalachian Trail? I found my hands began to sweat; my heart beat hard. I wanted to yell, “No! Why would you suggest that? I thought we were friends!” I hated picnics. My hatred of them began as a child. I always got carsick and it was hot all the way. Air conditioning in vehicles was pretty much unheard of in 1980s Birmingham, and my mother insisted on having all the windows closed because of the unpleasant smell of gas. We would arrive at some faraway destination, usually a car park with a field attached next to a plant, and unpack tasteless sandwiches, nearly cold sausage rolls and disgusting salads. There were never any toilets, so we had to “go” behind a bush; the memory of being discovered by a random dogwalker still embarrasses me from time to time. My mother sat in a relaxed way on a rug (小毯子) while we girls were playing nearby or maybe lying next to her. But for me this was a time when I suffered a lot. It was frightening to be attacked by ants or spot a dead rabbit in the grass. As an adult I'd avoided all picnics, but this time I couldn't. I just said yes, without letting Kathy sense my true feeling about them. She is my best friend and sometimes you must make sacrifices for people you like a lot. “I'll bring the food, and you bring the drink,” she said. My ridiculously enthusiastic family and I arrived at the picnic site. My expectations were low. Kathy and her husband Dave unloaded folding tables, chairs, a table cloth and ... a cool box of delicious food mostly purchased from a local deli (熟食店), which does all manner of preprepared salads and cold cuts. There was fresh bread, olives, even candles to keep away insects, music, and wine. It was completely delightful. There may have been children playing around too, even if one of them did find a dead bird (told you!). I am now a picnic enthusiast and we're planning another. I'm even reading up on picnic recipes for it! 1.What was the author's attitude towards Kathy's suggestion according to the first paragraph? I hated picnics.” B。 2.What can be inferred from the author's childhood picnics? A.The food was delightful. B.She enjoyed the journey. C.She thought the wild unpleasing. D.She could talk with her mother alone. 根据第二段中的“There were never any toilets ... from time to time.”及“But for me this was a time ... in the grass.” C。 3.Why did the author accept Kathy's picnic invitation? A.Because she liked the picnic place. B.Because her family wanted to have the picnic. C.Because she didn't want to hurt Kathy's feelings. D.Because Kathy promised her a good picnic. 根据第三段中的“As an adult ... for people you like a lot.” C。 4.Why did the author write the text? A.To remember an unforgettable trip. B.To record her memories of family picnics. C.To express her thanks to her friend Kathy. D.To describe her changed attitude to picnics. Robert and Henry were good friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day Robert and Henry were going home from school when Robert shouted at Henry and said, “You are a coward (胆小鬼), and I won't play with you.” Without any words, Henry was a little angry and went home alone. The next day Henry went to school as usual, but Robert told all the boys that Henry was a coward and all of them laughed at Henry a great deal. Robert didn't invite Henry to go home with him anymore. Instead, he played with some other boys who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn't go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play. A few days later, Robert was swimming with his new friends in a river, and he struggled in the water and suddenly cried “Help, help”. His new friends didn't help him and ran away as fast as they could. Robert was still struggling in the river. Robert's life was saved. [精彩范文] Robert was still struggling in the river. It was clear that he was in danger. He thought that he would die soon if nobody came to help him. Just at the moment, Henry happened to be passing by. Hearing the cry, Henry ran to the riverside, threw off his clothes and jumped into the water quickly. He swam to Robert as fast as possible and helped Robert out just as he couldn't swim any longer. By his great effort, he saved Robert at last. Robert's life was saved. Robert was deeply moved by Henry's heroic deed and burst into tears. He and his new friends were ashamed at having called Henry a coward. They realized that Henry had true courage and he was a real hero, not a coward. When Robert shook Henry's hands and said sorry to Henry, Henry forgave him with a smile. Robert and Henry were friends again and after school they went home together happily as usual. 【持续背记】 ①I often feel left out in this school, and I don't know how it has come about. ②It's not very healthy to be in denial, because if you don't accept the situation for what it is, you can't take the next steps to move on. ③The blunt comment made Richard laugh in spite of himself. 【持续积累】 denial/dI'naIəl/n. 否认(令人不快、痛苦的事) blunt/blʌnt/adj.
