W:What does it take to be a head chef? Paul Heaton is here to tell us all about it.
M:Thanks! After I left school, I tried a few other things, including the local supermarket, but nothing really interested me until I got a job as a kitchen assistant. It was hard, dirty work and the pay wasn't great either. On the positive side, I was in a really busy kitchen where the top chefs were highly skilled and during my breaks I could watch and learn.
W:Those days are behind you now, aren't they?
M:Yes, these days I'm a head chef, so I'm responsible for organizing the kitchen. This includes preparing the menus, selecting and training staff and keeping the kitchen in good working order. And now I don't have to cook every day, but can choose to do it when I really want to.
W:What advice would you give to anyone thinking of becoming a chef?
M:You must be prepared to deal with stressful situations. And you have to be able to think quickly—if the fish you wanted to use for your main dish doesn't arrive, you've got to invent something different. People think that preparing food in a firstclass restaurant is a complicated and difficult thing to do. This is partly true. But the key to success is to buy the best and the freshest food available and keep things simple.

Text 10
On August 8th this year, I went to France. Having just returned to England yesterday on December 10th, I thought some of the best and worst of life in France.
Of course everybody loves cheese and wine in France, but what I love most of all is the French style of dining. Compared to the people in the UK, people in France have shorter working hours and longer lunch breaks. While people in the UK are rushing out to buy a quick meal at lunchtime, the French are having leisure time in cafes.
The worst thing of all about France for me is the opening hours of shops! Shops in France are only open for a few hours a day because shopkeepers often take a fourhour lunch break! How could I get my shopping done? What's more, for me, as a language learner, one of the most terrible things about France is that so many people speak English!
18.What does the speaker love about France most?
A.Longer holiday.
B.The delicious food.
C.The style of dining.
答案:C
19.What does the speaker think of the life in France?
A.Relaxing. B.Busy.
C.Boring.
答案:A
20.Why did the speaker go to France?
A.She went to France to study.
B.She went to France to work.
C.She went to France to travel.
答案:A

Whether it is for a special festival, to express thanks or to just let someone know that you care about them, giving gifts is a common custom. The purpose of giving gifts may be similar, but the tradition varies from country to country. A gift of respect in one place may be considered rude in another. Take a look at three unique giftgiving traditions.
India
If you're invited to someone's home in India, you should bring a small gift, whether it's a box of chocolates or some flowers. Gifts shouldn't be wrapped in black or white colors, because they are considered unlucky. Instead, use bright colors such as green, red or yellow. When giving money, it should have an odd number (奇数) value, which is believed to bring good luck. Instead of receiving a gift with both hands, Indians generally only use their right hand because left hands are considered unclean.
Japan
For most Japanese, the ritual (礼节) of giving presents is more important than the gifts themselves. The correct way is to present or receive gifts with both hands. Every gift should be wrapped. That's because uncovered gifts are considered disrespectful. To show politeness and thanks, people may turn it down once or twice before finally accepting it. Gifts should be given in pairs, but four should be avoided just like in China. Lucky numbers also include eight, for eight is said to bring prosperity (兴旺).
Native America
While it may be common for guests to prepare gifts for hosts, this is different in Native American communities. From weddings to birthday celebrations, guests are the ones who receive gifts. Gifts are usually homemade arts and crafts—made by hand to show love, respect and appreciation.

“How can you be okay with living in a country so far away and so different?” “The language is so hard. How are you going to be able to find your way around?” These are the most common questions I heard after I told people I was going to study abroad in China, a country that seemed so far away. Why risk dealing with that when Paris or London would be so much more accessible?
But a part of studying abroad is about embracing (欣然接受) the inaccessible. I took Chinese in high school and fell in love with it. Ever since I started college, I was determined to study in China. Three years later, I made it happen.
Of course, it was not easy. At the airport, people spoke English so I didn't worry too much about finding my way around. And then I met other foreign students who would become my best friends for five straight months. But once leaving the airport and downtown areas, we were fully immersed in China. I lived in a more suburblike (类似城郊的) area, more residential than the rest of Shanghai. People always looked at us curiously as we went about our days and few of them spoke English. It was awkward at first. Slowly, as we got more used to the language, people talked with us. Of course, they wanted to know the differences between living in America and living in China.
My roommate studied abroad in Ireland last semester while I was in China. There is nothing wrong with going to Europe, but if you want to broaden your horizons, I would suggest looking elsewhere. Living in a place that is so different from what I am used to gives me valuable experiences I can't get any other way. My Chinese teacher was so amazing and patient with us, and my other Chinese friends helped me through the difficult part of feeling out of place in the unknown. In a strange way, not being able to express everything I want brings me closer to people.

All over the world, mothers and fathers teach their children manners. Other children may have manners that are not like yours. There are all kinds of manners. Years ago, children who had good manners were seen everywhere. They kept quiet if grownups were talking. Today, wellmannered children have more freedom. Sometimes good manners in one place are bad manners in other places.
Suppose you are a visitor in the land of Mongolia. Some friends ask you to eat with them. What kind of manners do they want you to have? They want you to give a loud “burp (打嗝)” after you finish eating. Burping shows that you like your food. In some countries, if you give a loud burp, you are told to say, “Excuse me, please.” In many places people like to eat together. But in some parts of Polynesia it is bad manners to be seen eating together. People show good manners by turning their backs to others while they eat.
What are manners like in an East African town? People try not to see you. They are being polite. You may see a friend. He may not see you at all. If you are polite, you will sit down beside him. You will wait until he finishes what he is doing. Then he will talk to you.
Suppose you visit a friend in Arabia. You should walk behind the other tents until you come to his tent. If you pass in front of the other tents, you will be asked into each one.People will ask you to eat with them. And it is bad manners if you say no.
Manners are different all over the world. But it is good to know that all manners begin in the same way. People need ways to show that they want to be friends.

People from East Asia tend to have more difficulties than those from Europe in distinguishing facial expressions and a new report published online in Current Biology explains why.
Rachael Jack, University of Glasgow researcher, said that rather than scanning evenly (均匀的) across a face as Westerners do, Easterners fix their attention on the eyes.
“We show that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features to read facial expressions,” Jack said. “Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes and overlook the mouth.”
According to Jack and her colleagues, the discovery shows that human communication of emotion is more complex than previously believed. As a result, facial expressions that had been considered universally recognizable cannot be used to reliably convey emotion in crosscultural situations.
The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of expressive faces and put them into categories: happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted, angry, or neutral. They compared how accurately participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye movement strategies.
It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made significantly more errors than Westerners did. “The cultural difference in eye movements that they show is probably a reflection of cultural difference in facial expressions,” Jack said. “Our data suggest that whereas Westerners use the whole face to convey emotion, Easterners use the eyes more and mouth less.”
In short, the data show that facial expressions are not universal signals of human emotion. From here on, examining how cultural factors have diversified these basic social skills will help our understanding of human emotion. Otherwise, when it comes to communicating emotions across cultures, Easterners and Westerners will find themselves lost in translation.

Dear David,
I'm more than delighted to share my opinion, which I hope will be of some help to you. Frankly, I hold the view that it makes good sense to study abroad. The reasons are as follows.
To begin with, exposure to a foreign language setting while we are studying abroad makes learning process interesting and effective. Moreover, bathed in a different culture of a foreign country, we can gain great insights into the world. Finally, studying abroad takes us out of our comfort zone and changes us for the better, which is the most important in my view.
All things considered, I hope you can choose to study abroad and start a new life.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In June, I flew from Chicago to Barcelona, Spain, with 10 classmates, led by our teacher. All the students, including me, were excited at the opportunity to study abroad. On our second day in Barcelona, we, together with our teacher, went to see the sights there. We hadn't had a chance to stop by any banks to take out cash, but we had our bank cards, which, according to our American way of thinking, would naturally be accepted anywhere.
After visiting some sights there, our teacher led the tired group through the subway and to the Sagrada Familia, a wellknown church with a long history. She let each of us decide whether we wanted to visit the church or return to the hotel after our long day traveling around the city. Many of the students headed for the subway and returned to the hotel. Two of my friends and I chose to wander about the plaza (广场), but soon my friends wanted to return to the hotel. I was confident in my abilities and had a subway ticket, so I felt comfortable without them. I got in line to enter the church which I had dreamed of visiting for long.
When I reached the entrance of the church, the staff of the church asked me for the 10euro admission price. I confidently handed over my bank card, but they didn't accept the bank card, asking for cash only. I was shocked and then upset. At that time, I only had three euros on hand. And I couldn't ask my teacher or classmates for help since the entire group had left. What was worse, I couldn't speak Spanish and asking for help from others might not work. I was so discouraged since our group were leaving the next day for Madrid, and I wasn't going to get the opportunity to see the church again. Aimlessly, I went across the street and passed by a small courtyard (庭院) with a food and drink truck, and tables set out.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;

[精彩范文]
Suddenly, I heard English being spoken. I turned around and saw several people sitting around a table and talking happily in English, “Maybe I can ask them for help. But will they believe in me and lend me the money?” I thought nervously. It took me about ten minutes to take my courage. I finally went to the table and explained my dilemma to them. Actually, I just wanted to take a chance and was not sure at all whether they would lend me the money because I was a complete stranger to them.
Surprisingly, one smiling woman at the table handed me a 20euro bill. “Go and buy me a cup of coffee please, and you can keep the change,” she offered. I was overjoyed and did so without delay. After handing her the coffee, I asked for her contact information, hoping to return 7 euros later on. But she declined, telling me the money was only a reward for my service. I was deeply moved. Thanks to her, I could visit the great church. That simple act of kindness is one of the nicest things a stranger has ever done for me.
