Zondo a lawyer and human rights activist, was accompanied by her family as she discussed the process behind writing her memoir — Dearest MaRiky: A Mother’s Journey through Grief, Trauma and Healing. In her book, Zondo tells her story, the tragedy of losing her son, musician and rapper Rikhado “Riky Rick” Makhado.
Speaking on the experience of launching her book, Zondo said she has found the process energising and fulfilling. “ I found myself energised by sitting like this, feeling a sense of community with people, sharing openly with people and feeling that I’m not alone in a warm way. Of course, there are times when I get home and I just curl up, but overall I’ve been energised,” Zondo said.
Parts of Zondo’s memoir are formatted as letters to Riky Rick and according to her, the writing process has been a healing process and closure following the death of her son. Zondo said the letters in the memoir came from the fact that she had promised her son that she was going to write some letters to him and tell him about some parts of her life. According to the self-reflective mother, the details on life were matters Riky Rick was asking about in times that he was feeling troubled. He felt confused by the experience of having a mother who came home and then went straight to her room and locked it. “He felt that he was not wanted.” Zondo said.
Zondo said the feedback she has received on the letters is that the writing has been a much needed thing. “ I got a lot of feedback from people who said thank you so much for writing …It made me feel like I could help somebody who is in a similar situation of being engulfed by deep sadness and grief and loss and pain and all of that,” Zondo said.
The book is available at most bookshops around the country for R240.
4. What is the original purpose for Zondo to write her book?
A. to keep her word to her son B. to help her community
C. to share her story with people D. to give her energy and courage
5. What can we infer from paragragh 3?
A. Zondo wrote the letters to Riky Rick before he died.
B. Zondo explained in the letters why Ricy Rick died .
C. Zondo felt guilty because she ignored Ricy Rick’s feelings.
D. Zondo locked herself in the room after Ricy Rick’s death.
6. What does the underlined word “engulfed” in paragragh 2 from the bottom mean?
A. moved B. overcome C. confused D. attracted
7. What is the purpose of this passage?
A. to introduce a celebrity B. to discuss a problem
C. to educate the public D. to promote a book

You’ve just finished a cup of coffee at your favorite cafe. Now you’re facing a trash bin, a recycling bin and a compost bin. What’s the most planet-friendly thing to do with your cup?
Many of us would choose the recycling bin — but that’s often the wrong choice. In order to hold liquids, most paper coffee cups are made with a thin plastic lining, which makes separating these materials and recycling them difficult. In fact, the most sustainable option isn’t available at the trash bin. It happens earlier, before you’re handed a disposable (一次性的) cup in the first place.
In two nationwide surveys in the U.S. that we conducted in October 2019 and March 2022, we found that people ignore waste reduction and reuse in favor of recycling. We call this tendency recycling preference and reduction ignoring. Our results show that a decades-long effort to educate the U.S. public about recycling has succeeded in some ways but failed in others. These efforts have made recycling an option that consumers see as important — but to the detriment (损害) of more sustainable options.
Producing and disposing (处理) of goods is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions and a public health threat, especially for communities that receive large quantities of waste. New research suggests that even when plastic does get recycled, it produces enormous amounts of microplastic pollution.
Experts and advocates widely agree that humans are generating waste worldwide at levels that are unmanageable and unsustainable. They have long recommended tackling the waste problem by prioritizing source reduction strategies that prevent the creation of waste in the first place, rather than seeking to manage and decrease its impact later. Creating items that can be recycled is better from a sustainability angle than burning them in an incinerator or burying them in a landfill, but it still consumes energy and resources. In contrast, reducing waste generation conserves natural resources and avoids other negative environmental impacts throughout a product’s life.
8 What is the main idea of Paragraph 2?
A. The paper coffee cup should be reused.
B. The recycling bin doesn’t live up to its name.
C. The paper coffee cup can’t be recycled.
D The recycling bin should be improved.
9. Why do people prefer recycling when tackling waste?
A. They have no other choice about waste disposal.
B. It is the most environmentally friendly way.
C. The previous education misled them to.
D. It is the easiest and most sustainable option.
10. Why is a recyclable product not the best choice?
A. It will end up in a landfill.
B. It will give off greenhouse gas.
C. Energy and resources are needed to produce it.
D. It produces a large amount of microplastic pollution.
11. What is the best strategy to deal with your waste?
A. reduce B. reuse C. recycle D. reproduce
D
Global education company, Cengage, has launched a subscription service that will give students access to thousands of digital products, including eTextbooks, online learning platforms and study tools covering over 600 courses.
Vice President and General Manager of International Higher Education at Cengage, Andrew Robinson, said that Cengage Unlimited is designed to address one of the major challenges facing higher education and one worsened by the crisis over the last two years, namely fair and equal access to learning materials. “Affordable and accessible course materials can make the difference between a student dropping out or completing their degree.” Robinson said.
He explained that Cengage Unlimited for Institutions is not just another online learning offering — it is the only comprehensive service that includes access to everything a student needs to learn — eTextbooks, learning platforms, study tools, online homework and skill-building resources to develop employability skills. Subjects covered include accounting, science, maths, psychology and engineering, among many others.
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at University of Cape Town is using Cengage’s WebAssign, one of the platforms included in Cengage Unlimited for Institutions, to provide content, online study functionality, and efficient homework assigning and grading to a large Calculus course of 800 students. The platform is specifically designed for STEM subjects and provides course content, homework, tests and practice problems with instant assessment and has been shown to improve student grades.
The Psychology Department at North-West University (NWU) used another of Cengage’s platforms, MindTap — also included in Cengage Unlimited, for their Introductory Psychology module to help a large group of students with their self-study and comprehension of key introductory concepts. MindTap is a fully customisable online teaching and assessment tool that includes videos, test banks, interactive study tools and access to eTextbooks.
“The economic crisis over the last two years had major impacts for students and institutions alike. During this time, Cengage worked closely with its customers to support the transition to remote learning. Throughout the process, Cengage developed a deeper insight into the ways e-Learning can be supported,” Robinson said.
12. What is Cengage Unlimited aimed at?
A. Helping the poor students complete the university education.
B. Providing students with the same chance to get learning materials.
C. Aiding the students dropping out to complete their degree.
D. Addressing the major challenges worsened by the economic crisis.
13. How does Cengage Unlimited for Institutions differ from other platforms?

Robert and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day, Robert and Henry were going home from school, when, on turning a corner, Robert cried out, “A fight! Let's go and see!”
“No,” said Henry. “Let us go quietly home and not meddle with (插手) this quarrel. We have nothing to do with it and may get into trouble. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don't want them to worry about me.”
“You are a coward (懦夫), and afraid to go,” said Robert, and he ran. Henry went straight home and in the afternoon went to school as usual.
But Robert had told all the boys that Henry was a coward, and they laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and didn’t want to play with him together. Henry was sad but he wasn't angry with Robert for his rude behavior, because he learned that true courage is shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored (忽视) the other boys' laughter and continued to go to school and study as well. However, Robert didn't invite Henry to go home with him anymore. Instead, he had some other boys who also thought Henry was a coward. Everyday after school, they didn't go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had a lot of fun.
A few days later, Robert was bathing with his new friends in a river, and got out of his depth. He struggled, and screamed for help, but all in vain. The boys who had called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could, but they did not even try to help him.

Zondo, a lawyer and human rights activist, was accompanied by her family as she discussed the process behind writing her memoir — Dearest MaRiky: A Mother’s Journey through Grief, Trauma and Healing.

8. What is the main idea of Paragraph 2?
A. The paper coffee cup should be reused.
B. The recycling bin doesn’t live up to its name.
C. The paper coffee cup can’t be recycled.
D. The recycling bin should be improved.
A. reduce B. reuse C. recycle D. reproduce
B 9. C 10. C 11. A

根据时间状语“As early as a thousand years ago”可知,句子使用一般过去时,主语“a group of people”表示复数意义,be动词使用were,故填were。
方式”,使常用介词in和way搭配,故填in。
结合“by simplicity and peace”可知,主语Bian embroidery和动词characterize之间是被动关系,且句子是描述一个事实,使用一般现在时的被动语态,主要表示单数意义,be动词使用is,故填is characterized。

注意:
1)所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1:
Robert was fast sinking.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Thus, Robert’s life was saved.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Robert was fast sinking. It seemed as if Robert would be drowned only with his hands sticking out of the water. Just at the moment, Henry happened to be passing by. Hearing the screams, Henry ran quickly to the riverside, threw off his clothes and jumped into the water without hesitation. He reached Robert just as he was sinking at the last moment. By great effort, and with too much danger to himself, he brought Robert back to the shore.
Thus, Robert’s life was saved. Robert and his new friends were ashamed at having called Henry a coward. They realized that Robert had true courage. And it was Henry who was the true friend worth making. They said sorry to Henry for their rude behavior and asked for his forgiveness. Henry forgave them happily. He and Robert were friends again and they went home together as usual. From this, Robert learned what true courage was: never be afraid to do good, but always fear to do evil.
