In 2018, when Hemesh Chadalavada was 12 years old, his grandmother forgot to turn off the gas after she made herself a cup of tea. This experience caused Hemesh to invent the “Alpha Monitor”, a device designed for dementia (痴呆) patients.
He started creating this device with whatever was at home, with the help of the internet. “The first model I built was a huge box. I learnt how to make a wearable device on the internet by learning which components to use and where I could source them in Hyderabad. I started with a hardware device, after which I learnt coding online and moved to machine learning and data science, to help me perfect my device,” he adds.
The Alpha Monitor has two parts, one, a wearable watch-like device, and the second, an alarm which connects to it. “You attach the device to the patient. In case the patient throws it away or doesn’t like wearing it, you can just put it in a bag and fix it in their pocket or sock or wherever you like. Once you plug in the alarm, you will be warned for every tiny change in movement. As soon as the patient gets up or wanders away, it will warn the family members with a huge alarm sound,” says Hemesh.
The wearable device monitors body temperature, pulse, and detects movement, falls and more. It works using a gyroscope sensor to detect even the slightest movement and health sensors for pulse and temperature. It works without Wi-Fi or bluetooth and has a range of 1-2k m, according to Hemesh. It can also be connected to an app for children staying far away to monitor their parents’ movements.
“The happiest I’ve ever been is seeing how the device actually works for patients with Alzheimer’s. It gives me incredible happiness to see the small impact I’ve managed to create in the lives of these families,” smiles the youngster.
24.What can we learn about Hemesh from the first two paragraphs?
A.He received little formal education. B.He had a strong self-learning ability.
C.He invented the device to stop gas leaks. D.He got support from a computer engineer.
25.How does the Alpha Monitor warn people of patients’ movements?
A.By speaking into their phones. B.By producing a loud noise.
C.By making an emergency call. D.By announcing the time automatically.
26.What is a feature of the Alpha Monitor?
A.It can analyze patients’ health data.
B.It can prevent patients from falling down.
C.It can track patients’ movements remotely.
D . It can make a difference to patients’ recovery.
27.Which of the following can best describe Hemesh?
A.Caring and creative. B.Generous and talented.
C.Determined and honest. D.Independent and brave.

Are you an early bird or a night owl? Our activity patterns and sleep cycles could influence our risk of heart disease. New research published in Experimental Physiology found wake/sleep cycles cause metabolic (新陈代谢) differences and change our body’s preference for energy sources.
Researchers from Rutgers University, New Jersey, USA classified participants into two groups(early and late) based on their natural tendency to seek activity and sleep at different times. The participants were monitored for a week to assess their activity patterns across the day. They ate a calorie and nutrition-controlled diet and had to fast overnight to minimize dietary impact on the results. To study fuel preference, they were tested while at rest before completing two 15-minute period of exercise: one moderate and one high intensity session on a running machine. Aerobic fitness levels were tested through an incline challenge where the incline was raised 2.5% every two minutes until the participant reached a point of exhaustion.
The researchers found that those who stay up later have a reduced ability to use fat for energy, meaning fats may build up in the body and increase the risk of heart disease. People who are ‘early birds’ rely more on fat as an energy source and are more active during the day with, higher levels of aerobic fitness than ‘night owls’. On the other hand, ‘night owls’ use less fat for energy at rest and during exercise.
Researchers also found that early birds use more fat for energy at both rest and during exercise than night owls. Professor Steven Malin from Rutgers University said, “We found that early birds are more physically active and have higher fitness levels than night owls. Farther research is needed to examine the link between exercise and metabolic adaptation to identify whether exercising earlier in the day has greater health benefits.”
28.What does the underlined word “fast” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Move quickly. B.Go without food.
C.Exercise regularly. D.Fall sound asleep.
29.How was the research conducted?
A.By making a survey. B.By making contrasts.
C.By providing examples. D.By introducing a concept.
30.What is the characteristic of the “early birds”?
A.Having lower fitness level. B.Using less fat during exercise.
C.Consuming more fat at rest. D.Being more active during the night.
31.What is Malin’s attitude to the result of the research?
A.Tolerant. B.Pessimistic. C.Indifferent. D.Uncertain.

Literature makes us better thinkers. It moves us to see the multi-sidedness of situations and therefore expands the width of our own visions, moving us towards dreams and solutions we might not otherwise have imagined.
-Judith Langer, Envisioning Literature.
When students study Literature, they learn to appreciate words and their power. They travel to other areas and times through the texts they read. They understand about their own culture and others’. They learn to empathize (共情) with characters, to feel their joys and pain. For example, one 15-year-old student shared with me that when studying the short story The Shoes of My Sensei by Goh Sin Tub, he could put himself into the shoes of those who lived through World War II, and understand their suffering, and what it was like during that time.
Importantly, they lean to consider multiple aspects and understand the complexity of human nature. Take, for example, George Orwell’s Animal Farm. Do we feel Napoleon is fully responsible for the miserable lives the animals lead? Aren’t the other animals responsible for their own misfortune too, having allowed Napoleon to bully them? In Literature, as in life, things aren’t always so clear cut, in black and white. And there lies the value of the subject—it prepares one for the ambiguities (模棱两可) of life, to take uncertainties in one’s stride.
Literature develops in students lasting values, such as integrity, sympathy, loyalty and responsibility. For example, in a text like Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, the main character chooses to sacrifice his own life rather than betray his friends and neighbors. When considering this character’s motivations, students discuss the value of integrity. They reflect on what it takes to be a man or woman who commands the respect of the people around them even in difficult situations. The texts students explore give them multiple opportunities to discuss and re-evaluate their own values and beliefs. These act as a compass in life as students grow up.
32.Why is an example of a 15-year-old student mentioned in the first paragraph?
A.To raise people’s awareness of appreciating others’ culture.
B.To appeal to readers to read more Literature on World War II.
C.To remind students that Literature can make the world free of war.
D.To show Literature can make one think from others’ points of view.
33.What does the underlined part probably mean in Paragraph 2?
A.Accept something uncertain without special effort.
B.Allow one to take the ambiguities of life for granted.
C.Have the courage to face the misfortune occurring in life.
D.Take the responsibility to fight against the miserable lives.
34.According to the last paragraph, Literature can help students ________.
A.lead a happy life B.build up right values
C.get on well with friends D.handle difficult situations
35.What might be the best title for the text?
A.Where should students start when they study Literature?
B.What will students gain through the study of Literature?
C.Why will Literature help students in their future success?
D.How can we support students in their study of Literature?

How similar are language and music?
Language is part of our daily lives, no matter where we live in the world. 36 Both language and music play a huge role in our culture and here are some of their similarities.
Both language and music have a writing system.
In English we record language using the alphabet, which is a collection of letters. Similarly, we use notes (音符) to keep a record of music. Musicians read notes and create meaning in the form of music. 37 By writing pieces of text or music, we are able to share experiences through time. We can read the ideas or hear the composition (作品) of someone who lived hundreds of years ago.
38
You can make a good guess at where someone is from by listening to the language he uses. In the same way, we know that styles of music are different around the world, giving us the opportunity to explore many different cultures through their music and providing us with music for every situation.
Both share emotion.
39 Of course you may be able to see it in my face, but you will know for sure through my words. Similarly, music can sound angry, sad or happy. Music can show you exactly how the composer was or is feeling, and allows us to share that emotion. When you feel happy, you might want to sing and dance to a happy song to celebrate your happiness. 40 I think we have all used music to express or process our emotions, often combining it with language in the form of song lyrics (歌词).
A.Both are expressive.
B.Both vary with culture.
C.How do you know that I am angry?
D.We use language to express our thoughts.
E.Similarly, music is part of many people’s lives.
F.So just as you read English, you can read music.
G.In contrast, you probably also listen to sad music when you are feeling down.

The school festival was buzzing with excitement, all because of a new contest called “Innovate Your Way.” This contest was all about making a costume that was as unique and creative as possible, showcasing what one loves the most.
Lily Adams was surrounded by classmates with cool ideas. One classmate said excitedly, “I’m going to be the whole solar system, with planets circling around me!” One boasted (吹嘘), “I’ll redefine innovation. I will become a walking smartphone from the future, showing the digital age with interactive apps and games.”
Meanwhile, another one came up with the idea to dress up as a live weather forecast. He planned to attach LED screens to his outfit, displaying different weather patterns. This costume would not just show the weather but also change with real-time updates, combining technology and creativity in a way the festival had never seen.
Feeling overwhelmed, Lily wasn’t sure what to do. Her friends had such amazing ideas, and she hadn’t even picked a costume yet. She shared her worries with her friend Noah, saying,” I can’t make up my mind. Every idea seems too hard to do or just not exciting enough.”
Noah, always wise, had a great suggestion. “Why don’t you make a costume about gardening? You love it, and it’s something unique to you,” he said. Lily was unsure because the contest was just a few days away. “I don’t know if there’s enough time to make something like that from the beginning,” she worried. But Noah encouraged her, “You have a special talent for making something wonderful out of simple things. Use what’s around you.”
Inspired by Noah’s words, Lily thought over her collection of plants and flowers. Arriving home, she noticed the pile of old gardening magazines and a forgotten green tarp(防水布)in the garage.

A Chinese Painting Exhibition
Last week our city museum witnessed an art exhibition themed Meet the Chinese Paintings to fuel our passion for traditional Chinese art and appreciation of Chinese paintings.
Running from April 17 to April 20, the exhibition showed the charm of Chinese paintings from different dynasties, bringing a feast for the eyes of art lovers and presenting the history of traditional Chinese paintings. The highlight of the exhibition was Qingming Shang He Tu,showing life along the Yellow River during the Qingming Festival, which was thought to be one of the most excellent works worthy to be enjoyed. Through the exhibition, the art lovers had a deep insight into the development of Chinese painting.
The exhibition was highly thought of by all the art lovers. It was well worth a visit.
第二节:读后续写
One possible version:
As Lily looked through the magazines, an idea began to take root. She would create a costume that showcased her love for gardening! She quickly gathered all the materials she needed—leaves, flowers, and even some small plants. With Noah’s advice in mind, she started to work on her costume, carefully arranging the plants and flowers to create a beautiful garden scene. It was hard work, but Lily loved every minute of it. She spent hours perfecting her creation, adding little details here and there until it was just right.
The day of the contest finally arrived. Lily was nervous as she walked onto the stage, but as soon as she saw the look of amazement on the judges’ faces, she knew she had made the right choice. Her costume was unlike anything anyone had ever seen before. It was a living, breathing garden, complete with real plants and flowers. The judges were blown away by her creativity and originality, and Lily won first place in the contest! From that day on, Lily felt more confident in herself and her abilities. She realized that it’s important to follow your passions and do what you love.

Text 1
W: Esther looks calm as she faces the press.
M: After all, she has had many such experiences. The documentary she filmed about a ballet school has become a hit again.
Text 2
M: What did Sarah mean by “thinking outside the box” just now?
W: Well, she suggested we explore different ideas—finding new solutions beyond the usual methods.
M: Got it. I believe it needs a team effort. It would be best if everyone shared the responsibility of bringing fresh perspectives.
Text 3
W: Eric, have you noticed that the ground outside is frozen solid?
M: Really? I didn’t know that.
W: Yeah, it feels like the North Pole out here. I wasn’t expecting it to be this chilly. I need to drink some hot water to warm myself.
Text 4
M: Hey, Chloe! We need some new blood. Could you please draft a job advertisement?
W: Sure, Greg. What details should it include?
M: Just cover the position, qualifications and the application process. And the deadline for hiring is next Friday. Thanks a bunch!
Text 5
W: Have you heard about the soup kitchen in our community?
M: Yeah, I heard they’re providing meals for those in need. Are you planning to volunteer?
W: Sure. It’s a great way to give back to the community. Do you want to join me?
M: You bet!
Text 6
W: Good morning, Nick. This is Lily from the International Student Office. I’m calling to tell you that Mrs. Collins won’t be able to see you until next week.
M: Oh. Is there someone else I can talk to?
W: Mr. Hunter is available at 2:15 p. m. Will that work for you?
M: Hmm···I’d prefer to speak with Miss Brown.

M: No problem. See you at 11:00 a. m.
W: Okay, bye.
Text 7
M: Hey, Nina. It has been a few months since the last time we met. How are you and your family?
W: Never better. Thank you for asking.
M: Nina, I really admire you and Alex. You’re such a perfect couple. How long have you been married?
W: Well. It will be our ten-year anniversary next month.
M: Wow. That’s quite a long time. What is the key to a happy marriage in your opinion?
W: I think it’s giving each other some space.
M: What do you mean exactly?
W: I see a lot of people who move in together, and they give up all the things which make them individuals. My husband and I spend a lot of time together, but we have our own friends, our own hobbies, and so on.
M: You mean, you don’t want to be too dependent on each other?
W: Absolutely!
M: But you know, sometimes conflict happens the most when you raise kids.

M: I will, Bella. I’ll ask Billy, too. What should I bring you?
W: You don’t need to bring anything, actually. But if it makes you more comfortable, just bring a small gift for my little sister.

W: You can come in the early afternoon. We can prepare dinner together.
M: Okay, Bella. Thanks again for inviting me. I’ll call Billy right away.

W: Yeah. I love Taichi best for its graceful movements and health benefits. How about you?
M: It’s hard to pick just one. I love Shaolin kung fu. And I’m into Wing Chun. The focus on close-range combat and efficiency is impressive. Besides, drunken boxing is also attractive. The appeal lies in its uniquely entertaining combination of smooth, unpredictable movements and comedic elements.
W: I see you really like Chinese martial arts. So how do you view the importance of Chinese martial arts?
M: Well, apart from self-defense, they are deeply rooted in Chinese culture, promoting discipline and respect.

Evdokia Karafera is a human guide who partners with Persephone. “It’s helpful, because it speaks many languages,” she said. “There’s just a little delay in the touring.” She added, “Most find it fascinating, especially the children, and find it interesting that it speaks many languages.” Karafera noted, however, that human tour guides must remain part of the operation. “Robots, at some point in the future, will take over many jobs,” she said. “But I believe they cannot replace humans everywhere.”
