As you know, homework is a big part of going to school. Luckily, here are several suggestions for you to make homework easy.
Make a homework plan
Most middle school students have two or three hours of homework a night. If it is a heavy homework day, you may need to spend even more time. It is a good idea to come up with some kind of homework schedule (进度表) , especially if you are going to do sports or other activities after school.
Watch where you work
A bedroom, study or any room where you can get away from noise is good for you to do your homework. But don’t study on your comfortable bed, or you might fall asleep there.
Take a break
Most people’s attention ( 注意力) don’t last very long, so take some breaks while doing your homework. Sitting for too long without relaxing will make you less productive ( 多 产 的 ) than if you stop to take a break regularly. Taking a 15-minute break every hour is a good way for most people.
Get help when you need it
Sometimes even though you are listening carefully in class, some subjects seem too hard. The first person to ask for help is your teacher. He or she may be able to work with you before or after school and explain things more clearly. Your classmates may also be able to give you a hand. However, this might not give you the results you want. Lots of people understand something well but are not able to explain it.
1.Why can’t we do homework on the comfortable bed?
2.How long can we take a rest after doing an hour of homework?
3.Who can you ask for help if you find some subjects hard to learn?
4.What should you do if you have too much homework but you plan to do sports or other activities after school?
5.How do you make your homework easy? (请自拟一句话回答)

I am a Canadian. I started learning French when I was 10 years old. But my whole experience(经历)with the language was in the classroom. All of that changed, however, during my last summer of high school. As a 17-year-old girl, I flew across the country by myself for the first time! I headed for Quebec to live in the province with a French-speaking host family, who didn’t speak any English. And I would learn French at a local school.
On the first day of school the local school gave us students a test to determine(测定)our language level. We were required to speak only French all summer.
I made every effort to communicate(交流)in a second language by making new friends, seeing movies and even ordering food from restaurants in French. Though I couldn’t understand most of it at the very beginning, the whole experience was exciting and refreshing.
On weekends, my classmates and I took trips to different places around the province. On one trip, we went whale watching on the St. Lawrence River. Even though it was raining, we could see huge whales swimming around our boat. The most forgettable(令人难忘的)part of our trip was a visit to historic Quebec City. I walked along the stone street, took pictures of the European-style(欧式的)buildings, and learned some stories there.
Finally my efforts paid off! At the end of the summer, I was able to communicate pretty well. I couldn’t wait to go back to school and talk with my French teacher. Being lost in a French-speaking environment was a valuable learning experience. And it could be the main reason for my improvement(提高)in French.
1.When did the writer fly alone for the first time?
2.How did the local school determine the students’ language level?
3.Where did the writer take trips on weekends?
4.What did the writer think of the visit to historic Quebec City?
5.What do you think is the best way to learn a foreign language?(请自拟一句话作答)

I got off the train and ran to him. He was happy when he saw me. I looked him up and down. He was old but strong. His village was about three kilometers from the station. We walked there. People often think doing nothing is quite easy, but sometimes it can be very hard. Many of us want to help wildlife when they appear to be in trouble, but in some cases, we need to redirect these instincts (直觉) .
Generally, the best thing to do is leave the animal alone. This protects both you and the animal.
Young wildlife usually are not orphaned, even if (即便) a parent can’t be seen. For example, baby birds often leave the nest before they can fly, hopping around on the ground for days with the parents sometimes elsewhere getting food.
By trying to help wildlife, you might really be hurting them. A man in Georgia saw a manatee out of the water. Worried it was stuck (被困住) , the man pushed the manatee back into the water. Scientists said the manatee was very likely just sunbathing on a warm December day.
manatee
Your “help” could also end up hurting you. The man in Georgia was fine, but even people trained in manatee rescues (救援) sometimes get injured (受伤的) . Manatees may look slow and too large to cause injury, but a lot of strength and energy is hidden within their thick hide (皮) .
Finally, wild animals are hardier than we think. A recent car advertisement describes a couple “rescuing” a bird from cold weather and driving it south. This type of activity is illegal (违法的) and can be dangerous for the humans and the animals.
Sometimes, though, wildlife certainly needs our help. You’ll know a wild animal needs help if it has a broken limb, is bleeding (流血) , has a dead parent nearby, or is hopelessly caught in some man-made object.
If that’s the case, get in touch with a licensed (有执照的) wildlife rehabilitator. They are trained to care for wildlife. They can tell you what steps can be taken until help arrives. Not only that, but if they are truly in need, many animals need expert attention right away.
Wildlife rehabilitator is the answer for an injured animal. But, in general, the best bet for your safety, and that of the animal involved, is to leave wildlife alone, whenever possible, keeping them truly wild.
1.Is it quite easy for people to do nothing, according to the writer?
2.What does the writer want to tell us by showing the examples of manatees?
3.How can we help an injured animal correctly, according to the writer?
4.The writer thinks we should keep wildlife truly wild. Do you agree? Why or why not? List at least two reasons.

David is an American boy. He is fourteen years old. He is now a middle school student. He is interested in different countries and cultures and he likes traveling during his holidays.
Last year, David became interested in Chinese culture because he got to know a pen fiend—Liu Yang, a Chinese boy. Liu Yang is thirteen years old and he is also a middle school student. He lives in Beijing.
David and Liu Yang communicated a lot by email. They wrote in English. David got to know many things about China from Liu Yang. Every three weeks he received a postcard from Liu Yang. David made a lot of preparation for this dream. He took part in a Chinese course (课程). There he learned about Chinese language and culture (文化). At first he found it difficult to learn Chinese. But he worked hard. Now his Chinese is much better and he wants to write to Liu Yang in Chinese next time.
David wants to go to China next winter holiday. He will meet Liu Yang in Beijing and they will go to many great places. He is looking forward to it.

Like most people, you probably have a to-do list to help you finish a task. However, I would also suggest you make a not-to-do list. This list works well with the to-do list and it might be even more important. Let me explain.
This is Mike. He loves video games and plays them every day. But he also has an important exam coming up. So Mike puts studying on his to-do list. That day, Mike picked up the books and studied for half an hour. Then he took a short break and played some games. However, he got so into the game that he played for three hours.
The next day, Mike took on the challenge of studying in a different way. He decided to make a not-to-do list as well. And what he wrote down was: “No video games until 7:00 pm.” Mike went to study, did it for half an hour, and then took a break. However, he didn’t get on his computer like the day before because he didn’t allow himself to play at that time. Instead, he drank a glass of water. Then he returned to studying for three hours more on that day.
Mike realized that having no restrictions was the problem. He was always choosing between work and free time. Because enjoying himself was an easier choice, hardly any work got done as a result. So Mike made a not-to-do list.
Sometimes what you choose not to do matters more than what you decide to do. We shouldn’t just limit our “bad” behaviors but our “good” behaviors as well. For example, practicing the piano could be considered a good habit. But when you have other more important things in the moment, the piano becomes nothing more than a distraction. However, there’s one thing that should never end up on your not-to-do list. That is to learn something new every day.
1.Did a to-do list help Mike prepare for his exam well?
2.What did Mike write on his not-to-do list?
3.How long did Mike study the next day?
4.According to Paragraph 4, what problem has Mike realized?
5.What do you want to write on it if you have a not-to-do list?

Everyone knows that bees are busy. There is even a saying in English that one can be “as busy as a bee”. However, little is known about how bees play. Scientists have found one way that bees could relax after a busy day—they play with balls.
The scientists are from a university of London. They did different tests on bees “playing” with different things. They found bees liked playing with small, wooden (木质的) balls best.
The scientists said the way bees played was a little like how humans play. Younger bees played more balls than older bees, older males (雄性) spent longer playing with balls than older females.
The scientists took 45 bees to a test place. In this place, the bees had two ways to choose. The first was to fly or walk directly (直接) to get sugar. The second was to get the sugar by going around different coloured balls. The scientists found that most of the bees decided to play with the balls first and then get their sugar.
A scientist said the study showed that bees are cleverer than people believed. She said: “Bees are hundreds of miles far from the mindless, they are not traditionally believed to be.” She added that: “This study shows a strong point that insect (昆虫) minds are far smarter than we think.”

2.How do bees relax after a busy day?
3.What do bees and humans have in common when they play?

Do you like to travel alone? Or do you think it’s better to travel with friends? If you’re still deciding, please read on. I will explain the advantages of both ways.
One of the great things about traveling alone is that you can decide where you go and what you eat. You’ll be surprised at what you discover about yourself without any influence.
Traveling alone really shows you what you’re made of and helps you to discover inner strength you didn’t know you had. Besides, it also gives you time to think, learn and grow. When your eyes are wide open, you’ll get a whole new outlook on the world.
It’s easy to think that traveling alone is lonely. Although that may sometimes be true, you’re hardly ever alone. When you travel in a one-person team, this can provide a chance for you to enjoy the most interesting part of travel—communicating with the local people.
In fact, traveling to know more about the world is not easy. There’s research to be done, flights to be booked and choices to be made. One of the main advantages of traveling with friends is being able to share these things and support each other through the process, even if it’s just someone who will wait with your bag when you go to the bathroom.
Just as your mother always says, it’s true that traveling with others can give you a sense of safety, especially if you’re new to travel. You know that if you get lost or have your wallet stolen, there’s someone to hold your hand when you try to explain your situation in a foreign police station. There’s no right or wrong way to travel. Whether you travel alone or team up with friends, it is up to you.
1.What can you decide when you travel alone?
2.According to the writer, what is the most interesting part of travelling in a one-person team?
3.Why isn’t it easy to know more about the world by traveling?
4.Do you prefer to travel alone or travel with friends? Why? (List at least two reasons.)

(22-23八年级上·吉林长春·期中)Once a king got two nice falcons (猎鹰) for his son. He had never seen such beautiful falcons before. He loved them so much and he ordered the best falconer to train them to fly.
After several months, the king came to see how the training was going. He found that one falcon had already been able to fly high in the sky, while the other was staying on the branch (树枝) of a tree quietly, just keeping still.
The king called all his falconers together and ordered them to try every way they could to make the other falcon fly. But none of them succeeded. One day, while the king was taking a walk in the forest, an idea came to his mind. Maybe someone who knew the natural environment well could solve this problem. He asked a farmer who lived in the forest into his palace to train it at once.
The next morning, the king saw the other falcon flying above in the sky freely. “It is unbelievable!” shouted the king. “How could you make it happen?”
The farmer replied, “It’s very easy. I just cut off the branch where the falcon rested.”
It is always the same to human beings. We all have “two flying wings” in our hearts as well, but we often seem not to notice them and stay where we are just for safety and comfort. We won't realize we can fly so high and freely until the “branch” we are resting on breaks.

What season is it in October? If you ask people from UK, they will tell you it’s “autumn”. But if you go to US, you will find that people use “autumn” or “fall”.
According toDictionary.com, both words have been around for a long time, but neither of them was first to describe this season. During this season, crops would become ripe(成熟)and farmers would have a big harvest. So in Old English, this season was simply called “harvest”.
Then, in the 1600s, more people left their farms and moved to cities. With fewer people farming, the word “harvest” became less useful. English speakers needed a different name for the season. They knew leaves fell from trees during the season, so people started calling it “the fall of the leaf”, or “fall” for short.
But at the end of the 1600s, autumn, from the French word “autompne” and the Latin “autumnus”, came to English. “Fall” as the word for this season disappeared slowly.
At the same time, people in UK were making their first trip to North America. They brought the words “fall” and “autumn” with them. That’s why today Americans have two names for one season.
1.What do people call the season in October in UK?
2.Why did people call this season “harvest” in Old English?
3.When did “harvest” become less useful?
4.What word replaced “harvest”?
5.What’s the passage mainly about?

Watch where you work
A bedroom, study or any room where you can get away from noise is good for you to do your homework. But don’t study on your comfortable bed, or you might fall asleep there.
Take a break

【答案】1.No, it isn’t. 2.By trying to help wildlife, we might really be hurting them and the “help” could also end up hurting us. /Helping wildlife might end up hurting both the animals and us. 3.By getting in touch with a (licensed) wildlife rehabilitator. 4.I agree that we should keep wildlife truly wild because we might hurt them when we try to help them (because we don’t know much about them). Also, we might hurt ourselves when we are trying to help. Animals are hardier than we think.

2.根据“By trying to help wildlife, you might really be hurting them.”和“Your ‘help’ could also end up hurting you.”可知,通过展示海牛的例子,作者想告诉我们,我们试图帮助野生动物的行为可能实际上会伤害它们和我们自己。故填By trying to help wildlife, we might really be hurting them and the “help” could also end up hurting us. /Helping wildlife might end up hurting both the animals and us.
3.根据“If that’s the case, get in touch with a licensed (有执照的) wildlife rehabilitator.”可知,作者建议我们应该联系有执照的野生动物康复人员来正确地帮助受伤的动物,因为他们受过专业训练,知道如何处理这些情况。故填By getting in touch with a (licensed) wildlife rehabilitator.
4.开放性试题,言之有理即可,参考答案为:I agree that we should keep wildlife truly wild because we might hurt them when we try to help them (because we don’t know much about them). Also, we might hurt ourselves when we are trying to help. Animals are hardier than we think.

(22-23八年级上·山东青岛·期末)To Have A Not-to-do List
【答案】1.No, it didn’t. 2.No video games until 7:00 pm. 3.Three and a half hours. 4.Having no restrictions was the problem. 5.No video games until 8:00 pm.
【导语】本文是一篇记叙文,通过讲述迈克准备考试的经历,告诉我们列一个“不能做的事情”清单的重要性。
1.推理判断题。根据第二段“So Mike puts studyina on his to-do list.”(所以迈克把学习列入了他的待办事项清单。)及“However, he got so into the game that he played for three hours.”(然而,他如此投入游戏,以至于打了三个小时。),可知迈克把学习任务加到任务清单中,但是他并没有好好学习,反而玩了很长时间游戏,由此可推知任务清单没有帮助迈克好好准备考试。故填No, it didn’t.
2.细节理解题。根据“He decided to make a not-to-do list as well. And what he wrote down was: ‘No video games until 7:00 pm.’ ”,可知迈克在清单中写到:晚上7点之前不许玩电子游戏。故填No video games until 7:00 pm.
3.推理判断题。根据第三段“Mike went to study, did it for half an hour, and then took a break.”,可知他学了半个小时;根据“Then he returned to studying for three hours more on that day.”,可知他又继续学习了三个小时,故可推出迈克第二天共学习了三个半小时。故填Three and a half hours.
4.细节理解题。根据第四段“Mike realized that having no restrictions was the problem.”,可知迈克意识到没有限制就是问题所在。故填Having no restrictions was the problem.
5.主观题,言之有理即可。故填No video games until 8:00 pm.

To Have a Not-to-do List
Like most people, you probably have a to-do list to help you finish a task. However, I would also suggest you make a not-to-do list. This list works well with the to-do list and it might be even more important. Let me explain.
This is Mike. He loves video games and plays them every day. But he also has an important exam coming up. So Mike puts studying on his to-do list. That day, Mike picked up the books and studied for half an hour. Then he took a short break and played some games. However, he got so into the game that he played for three hours.
The next day, Mike took on the challenge of studying in a different way. He decided to make a not-to-do list as well. And what he wrote down was, “No video games until 7:00 pm.” Mike went to study, did it for half an hour, and then took a break. However, he didn’t get on his computer like the day before because he didn’t allow himself to play at that time. Instead, he drank a glass of water. Then he returned to studying for three hours more on that day.
Mike realized that having no restrictions (限制) was the problem.
But when you have other more important things in the moment, the piano becomes nothing more than a distraction (注意力分散). However, there’s one thing that should never end up on your not-to-do list. That is to learn something new every day.
1.What did Mike write on his not-to-do list?
2.How long did Mike study the next day?
3.According to Paragraph 4, what problem did Mike realize?
4.Would you like to make a “not-to-do list”? Why or why not? (At least two reasons.)
【答案】1.No video games until 7:00 pm. 2.Three and a half hours. 3.Having no restrictions was the problem. 4.Yes, I would. Because it not only helps me focus on my most important task but also helps me develop my self-descipline.(言之有理即可)

(22-23八年级上·北京·期中)“Fall” and “Autumn”
【答案】1.Autumn. 2.Because during this season, crops would become ripe and farmers would have a big harvest. 3.In the 1600s. 4.Fall. 5.It is mainly about the history of the names of the season in October.

1.根据“What season is it in October? If you ask people from UK, they will tell you it’s ‘autumn’.”可知,在英国,人们在十月叫做“autumn”。故填Autumn.
2.根据“During this season, crops would become ripe(成熟) and farmers would have a big harvest.”可知,在这个季节,庄稼将会成熟,农民将会有一个大丰收,所以在古英语,这个季节只是被叫做harvest。故填Because during this season, crops would become ripe and farmers would have a big harvest.
3.根据“Then, in the 1600s, more people left their farms ... became less useful.”可知,在17世纪,越来越多人不种庄稼,搬到城市,harvest变得不是很有用了。故填In the 1600s.
4.根据“English speakers needed a different name for the season ... started calling it ‘the fall of the leaf’, or ‘fall’ for short.”可知,人们需要给这个季节一个不同的名字,他们知道在这个季节树叶会从树上落下来,所以人们开始叫这个季节为fall。故填Fall.
5.根据“That’s why today Americans have two names for one season.”可知,短文主要讲的是十月季节名字的来源。故填It is mainly about the history of the names of the season in October.
