“Mrs. Kelly says I am very gifted,” Anna always told her parents proudly, “She says maybe I will be the best dancer in our ballet (芭蕾) team.” But Mrs. Kelly encouraged all her dancers; she wanted them to enjoy dancing more than anything.
One day, Mrs. Kelly told to the small group of girls around Anna. “Girls! Girls! I’d like you to meet our new student, Sally. She loves dancing as you do. I hope you all take time to say ‘hi’ to her nicely.”
Sally was short and didn’t look like a good dancer, so Anna felt relaxed and was sure this girl would not dance well. However, as the weeks passed, Anna saw how amazing Sally really was at dancing. She danced in beautiful ways that was impossible for such a short girl. What’s more, Sally often helped girls with difficult dance moves. She was active and smart, and everyone liked her. It seemed that Sally was taking everything away from Anna.
Anna was sad and mad. The school ballet team would pick out the best dancer in only two weeks. She worried that Sally would win the competition and become the best dancer. Finally, she came up with a plan: she decided to put sand in Sally’s shoes secretly.
But when Anna saw how Sally kept dancing, even with sand in her shoes, she felt really sorry for her. After Sally had to stop dancing because of the pain, Anna felt so bad that she told Sally what she did and decided to drop out of the competition.
To her surprise, Sally smiled and said, “Dancing is not about being the best dancer at all. It’s about friendship.” Anna was touched by Sally’s words, and she went back on stage (舞台) to dance with her, learning that friendship and enjoying what you do is more important than winning.

Did you know lots of food that could be eaten gets thrown away? Even though we try to save food, about two billion (十亿) tons of it end up in the trash every year. This is really surprising, especially when we think that nearly one billion people around the world don’t have enough to eat. What’s even more surprising is that the extra food thrown away in places like the United States and Europe could feed all those hungry people!
Why do we waste so much food? Sometimes, bugs (虫子) damage the food before it can be picked, or it doesn’t look nice so stores don’t want to sell it. Foods can also go bad in stores or at our homes if we buy too much or forget to eat it. Sometimes, we cook more food than we can eat and end up throwing it away.
To fix the food waste problem, we need to make some changes. In places where people are still developing better ways to farm, improving how food is picked, stored, and moved can save a lot of food. In places like the United States, we need to make people more aware of (意识到) how much food they’re wasting. Some restaurants have started serving smaller meals and reminding people to take their leftovers home.
With not enough land, water, and energy for everyone, it’s important to think more about how we use food. As more people live on Earth, we need to stop wasting food and take action to use it better.

If someone said they’d pay you $1,800 to stay off social media for 6 years, could you do it? Could you? An American mom challenged her son to do just that, and he succeeded.
Sivert Klefsaas is the youngest of Lorna Gold-strand Klefsaas’ four children, and his three older sisters all used social media growing up. It was influencing their feelings, as well as their friendships. So, Lorna thought, “If I could, I’d be willing to do whatever to keep Sivert off social media as long as I could, whatever that looks like.” And that’s where the idea for this challenge came from.
It all started when Lorna heard about a similar “16 for 16 challenge” on the radio, where a mother called Amanda Green gave her daughter Teresa $1,600 when she turned 16 if she stayed off social media. So, Lorna decided to create her own “18 for 18 challenge”. Not only did Sivert finally complete this challenge, but he would do it again, too.
“It wasn’t too difficult to live without social media, and I didn’t think about it much during the 6 years,” Sivert said. “As time went on, it was more of a proud thing.”
He had his friends keep him up to update on the latest information. Sivert added, “I got to avoid all the unnecessary things that were on there. It also meant I had more time to focus on my grades and sports instead.”
Now that he’s done with the challenge, Sivert joined Instagram (照片墙), but has no plans to let social media define (定义) him.
“Social media is great. We certainly need to use it,” Sivert said. “But also make sure you spend time in other areas of your life, especially those personal relationships.”
Still, Lorna is proud of her son’s success. “We are certainly not against social media, but it’s the healthy using of it,” Lorna told CNN.

Everyone may feel angry at any time. It’s a common feeling. Some people cry when they feel angry and some may shout. Unluckily, many of us have been used to hiding anger. A study suggests that this can have long-term bad influences on our health.
Is it better to cry or break things whenever something makes us angry? The study points out that when we show our anger in this way, we can't probably get on well with our friends or our family. The more time we keep being angry, the worse result we’ll get. So how can we deal with our feeling of anger in a right way?
First, know what anger is. Anger is often caused by feelings of being too afraid, disappointment (失望) and so on.
Also, care more about those everyday things that will make us angry. For example, we may get angry in a long line at the store. Take a step back and think that it isn’t personal. Everyone in the line has dinner to make, just like us. Then we’ll feel better. Another way of dealing with anger is to talk about it. The study has shown that if we name our feelings, we can slowly calm ourselves down.
Besides, take a deep breath or find some helpful exercise to do. Exercise helps deal with anger.
Remember that how we act when we are angry can make things better or worse. If we learn to deal with anger, we will be happier and healthier.

“Without music, life would be a mistake,” famous German philosopher (哲学家) Friendrich Nietzsche said over a century ago. Music is a big part of our lives. But in recent years, some US schools have cut music classes to control budgets (预算).
For example, Chicago public schools hurt arts education when it fired (解雇) over 1,000 teachers. Among them, 10 percent of the teachers taught art or music, according to The Washington Times. In fact, this is not just a problem in the US. In other countries, such as China and the UK, music classes are not thought to be as important as the ones like science, math and history. That’s partly because music is not seen as a very important life skill, and it isn’t tested. Many students are busy with schoolwork, so parents and students choose to focus on subjects that are tested more often.
However, learning music is beneficial (有益的) in many ways. When playing music, you need different abilities to work together. It is not as simple as it looks, according to Kenneth Guilmartin of Music Together, an early childhood music development program. For example, when playing the piano, people see music notes and decode (解码) them in their brains. They also use their fingers to make sounds. You need to deal with all these things at the same time.
Music has a special connection with science as well. You can see that many scientists are good at playing music: Einstein played the violin, and German physicist Max Planck was talented in playing the piano.

Space tourism is not all about rockets—space balloons can do it too! The Spanish company HALO Space had the first unmanned test flight of its balloon in December 2022. It will compete with several other companies in the space-traveling business.
The test lasted 4 hours. The balloon reached 37 kilometers above Earth. People would see Earth from the blackness of space, said the Daily Mail. By 2029, the company plans to carry 3,000 passengers on 400 trips a year. The ticket for each trip will cost between 100,000 and 20,000 US dollars (about 696,000 to 1,392,000 yuan).
The test balloon is 773 kilograms, with a diameter (直径) between 110 and 130 meters (the length of a soccer field). It is filled with hydrogen (氢气), which is much lighter than air. When it flies, it lifts the capsule (舱) connected to it. The capsule can carry eight passengers and a pilot. Passengers can enjoy the360-degree view through the big windows. To ensure people’s safety, the capsule is also equipped with parachutes (降落伞). Another company, the US-based Space Perspective, said that such trips are about relaxation. Their balloon rises slowly at about 300 meters per minute, and takes about two hours to fly to 30 kilometers. Space Perspective is planning to fly their balloons from ships on the sea. As you read this passage, you probably have in front of you some paper, a pen and at least one pencil. Have you ever wondered how they were first made and where they come from?
The word “paper” comes from the name “papyrus”, a plant. The ancient Egyptians took the soft centre of this plant and added water to make a wet mixture which was then pressed together and hung up to dry. The resulting paper was strong yet flexible and was used as writing material in Greek and Roman times. However, it was the Chinese who invented what we now know as paper. The method, in use over 2,000 years ago, also included pressing and drying wet material to form paper. Many materials were used. It was not until the 19th century that paper became easy to make and cheap to buy.
The earliest pens were hollow reeds (空心芦苇) that were put into ink to produce a form of writing. By the 6th century BC, feathers had replaced the reeds and feathers continued to be used until the appearance of the metal nib (笔尖). The ballpoint pen was developed in the second half of the 20th century by the Hungarian Biro brothers.
From the time of the Romans, a metal stick, made of lead (铅), was used to write on papyrus. The lead left only a light mark and was later replaced by another soft metal, called graphite (石墨). Unlike lead, graphite produced a much harder and heavier line. The graphite sticks, however, broke very easily. So an Italian couple invented something a little like our modern pencil.
1.What does the underlined word “fiexible” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.柔韧的 B.复杂的 C.舒适的 D.坚硬的
2.When did the paper become easily made and affordable?
A.In the 6th century. B.In the 12th century. C.In the 19th century. D.In the 20th century.
3.Which of the following is the correct order of pens’ development?
A.Feathers→hollow reeds→metal nib→ballpoint pen.
B.Hollow reeds→feathers→metal nib→ballpoint pen.
C.Metal nib→hollow reeds→feathers→ballpoint pen.
D.Hollow reeds→metal nib→feathers→ballpoint pen.
4.Why did pencil makers change the pencil sticks from lead to graphite?
A.Because lead is harmful to people. B.Because lead breaks more easily.
C.Because graphite makes darker lines. D.Because graphite can’t be found easily.
5.What’s the purpose of this passage?
A.To teach us how to make paper.
B.To encourage us to learn the creative spirit of ancient people.
C.To make us realize the importance of Chinese inventions.
D.To help us learn the development of paper, pens and pencils.
We humans can express feelings by telling others how we feel, but what about arqimals? How can we tell whether they experience sadness or happiness? Over the past 20 years, researchers have made great progress in this field.
It’s very hard for us to understand the feelings of animals, because they cannot tell us how they feel. However, we can know how they feel by some of their representations (表现) . The easiest reaction(反应) that an animal can feel about something is to change its behavior(s). Humans often change looks and actions depending on whether they experience a happy thing or not. Animals show these special looks as well. For example, changes in the ear place or the amount (量) of the white part of the eyes can show different levels of pain or fear of animals. It is important to remember that the looks of animals are usually different from those of humans. Their joy might not be shown by a smile, and sadness may not be followed by tears.
Another example of animal actions that is connected to feelings is vocalizations (发声) , which can show stress of many different animals. We know this is true for humans, too. Imagine you are singing a song in front of many people, and your voice might shake if you are nervous. Researchers have found that the vocalizations of pigs, sheep and cows also change and get less smooth when these animals are nervous, for example, when they are separated from the group.
It seems that animals react to their environments as much as humans do. So, we can guess that animals have rich feelings. This might encourage us to rethink the environments where we raise the animals, such as farms, zoos or our houses. If we can better understand how animals react to their environments, we can improve these environments as well as human-animal relationships.
1.The animals’ different levels of pain can be shown from ________.
A.their special faces B.their different voice C.changes of eye colors D.different ear places
2.Why does your voice might shake when you sing in front of many people?
A.Because you are very nervous. B.Because you don’t have enough sleep.
C.Because you want to win an honor. D.Because you are afraid of singing.
3.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A.The places of raising animals.
B.The ways of how to raise animals well.
C.The suggestions of how to protect the environment.
D.The uses of understanding how animals express feelings.
4.What is the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
5.What’s the best title for the text?
A.Do Animals Like People? B.Do Animals Feel as We Do?
C.Do Animals Show Sadness? D.Do Animals Need Feelings?

At Hangzhou Dinglan Experimental Middle School in Zhejiang, an exciting event took place earlier this year. The students weighed a pig! Since 2017, the school has built a small farm for pigs. Every year, teachers and students work together to brainstorm and use scientific knowledge to weigh the pigs. They have used methods like Levers and Archimedes’ principle. This time, students chose to use Magdeburg hemispheres.
First, the students used a pump (泵) to get the air out of the hemispheres, and then connected them to a cage where the pig was. When they turned on electricity to let air in, the pressure inside the hemispheres increased. With a loud “bang”, the hemispheres pulled apart, showing a pressure difference.
Then, they calculated (计算) the pig’s weight with a special formula (公式), using the pressure difference. Getting the pig to the test site was quite challenging. The pig was much larger than it was last year, making it harder for the students to deal with. “As the pig was about to enter the cage, it suddenly lay down and didn’t move at all,” 13-year-old Liu Nian told Teens. In the end, they managed to push it into the cage.
After doing it a few times and averaging the results, the students found that the black pig weighed 165. 3 kilograms, very close to its known weight of 154. 5kg.
The task not only brought students great fun, it also deepened their understanding of science through the
activity. This helps them know scientific knowledge better and makes science even more engaging.

People now keep flat-faced dogs such as French bulldogs (法国斗牛犬) as pets because they are cute. Some people call these dogs “lazy” because they get sleepier more easily than other dogs during the day. However, these cute dogs are having a hard time, according to a recent study.
Scientists at Eotvos Lorand University in Hungary watched 92 family dogs of different types while they were sleeping. During the study, the dogs spent about three hours with their owners in the sleep lab. With nothing special to do, the dogs soon fell asleep. At that time, the scientists recorded the dogs’ brain activities by an electroencephalogram (EEG, 脑电图) , which doesn’t hurt the dogs.
The study found that the flat-faced dogs slept more than the other kinds. This may be because they don’t get enough sleep at night. The scientists explained that this is because of sleep apnea (睡眠呼吸暂停症), which only happens in French bulldogs. During their sleep, they can’t get enough air and may find it difficult to breathe, which makes them wake up from time to time. Some French bulldogs may sleep while holding a toy ball in their mouths. Owners may think this is funny. But they’re actually doing it to keep their airways open so they can breathe more easily.
This, however, is only one of the health problems dogs have because of breeding. According to the website Pet Helpful, a lot of pet dogs are bred based on what people like, such as shorter legs, heavier bodies, and larger ears. Bulldogs are one of the victims.
Lots of pet lovers are calling for people to respect dogs as they are. Breeders must take the health of their dogs seriously instead of just for cuteness, Australian vet Karen Hedberg told ABC News.

One day, Mrs. Kelly told to the small group of girls around Anna. “Girls! Girls! I’d like you to meet our new student, Sally. She loves dancing as you do. I hope you all take time to say ‘hi’ to her nicely.”

4.What’s the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A.Different abilities are needed to work together while we are playing music.
B.Playing the piano needs people to use fingers to make sounds.
C.Decoding music notes is needed while we are playing music.
D.Playing the piano needs people to see music notes.
5.What’s the writer’s opinion according to this passage?

A. B. C. D.

3.Why does some French bulldogs hold a toy ball in their mouths during sleep?
A.To keep them partly awake. B.To express their love for the toy.
C.To please their owners. D.To help them breathe better.
