Unit2 Using Language(2)
Describe an iconic animal

Step II
Writing.
(1)Ask students to brainstorm a list of four iconic animals in China in groups.
(2)Let students do some research and make notes. For example:
·where they live ·what they eat ·what they look like
·how they are different from other animals ·how they interact with people
·any other unusual or interesting facts about them
(3)Ask students to use their notes to write a description of one of these animals.Remember to tell them to use some rhetorical devices to make their writing vivid and interesting.
Suggested answer:
The Giant Panda
The giant panda, with its fluffy white and black fur, resembles a living teddy bear that has walked straight out of a children's storybook. Its large, round eyes seem to sparkle with intelligence and innocence, while its distinctive black patches on its ears provide an alluring contrast to its snowy white coat. But please folks,do not be fooled by its cute appearance. They may look cute, but encounters with them don't always end well. Despite being a lovable creature, the giant panda has a tough exterior. The long and powerful front limbs and flexible joints enable the giant panda to easily climb trees, roll around and grab bamboo. In fact, pandas are known to eat up to 40 pounds of bamboo per day to satisfy their voracious appetite. Its natural habitat is the bamboo forests, especially in Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu Provinces. With less than 2,000 pandas left in the wild, the species has been fighting for its survival. Yet, thanks to the relentless efforts of conservationists, the panda population has seen a monumental increase in recent years.
In conclusion, the giant panda is not only a beautiful and endearing animal, but also a symbol of endangered wildlife and hope. We should do our best to protect key habitats and ensure a sustainable wild giant panda population.
Step III
1. Have students exchange the draft with a partner and use the checklist to help them review their partner's draft.
Is the draft clear?
✓ Does the writer include all the important points in the draft?
✓Does the writer provide any additional information about the animal?
✓ Does the writer use the proper tense?
✓Does the writer use correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling?
2. Ask students to take their draft back and revise it.
3. Let students share the draft with the rest of the class.
