Ask students to change the following sentence into the active voice to analyse the function of the passive voice. Ask students to scan the reading text and underline all the verbs in the passive voice.Then have them discuss with a partner why the passive voice is used. (Activity 1) Suggested answers: ①It was going to be lested out by Larry's wife, Claire. ②..., but Larry persuaded her that the robot wouldn't harm her or allow her to be harmed. ③Now she was being looked after by a robot that looked so human, and it was disturbing. ④Claire thought it was ridiculous that she was being offered sympathy by a robot,... ⑤As he was not allowed to accompany her to the shops,... ⑥The saleswoman there was rude to her, so sherang Tony and told him she was being treated badly. ⑦How awful to be discovered by her, Claire thought. ⑧By that time, Tony expected that the house, which was being completely trans formed,would be ready. The passive voice is used to focus on the person or object that experiences an action rather thanthe person or object that performs the action. It is used when we don't know the performer, or the performer is unimportant (and therefore omitted), or the performer is to be highlighted (and therefore placed towards the end). 4. Ask students to complete the sentences with appropriate forms of the verbs in brackets.
